7374  Spanish Pork, ready to show its potential at SIAL China  The Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC) is ready to play a major role at SIAL Shangai, which will be held in Shanghai from 28 to 30 May. This event is an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate the leadership of the Spanish pork sector in the international market, especially in China, a strategic market for Spanish pork where it has established itself as the leading supplier.  <p>In 2023, Spain accounted for 20.95% of all Chinese purchases of pork products, surpassing other exporting countries. Fresh meat is the main product, with 294,885 tonnes exported for a value of 682.1 million euros, followed by offals and ham.</p> <p>In order to consolidate this leading position, INTERPORC will gather in a 810 sqm pavilion 20 of the most important Spanish pork companies, which in total have a production capacity of more than three million tonnes per year, an export value of more than 3.8 billion euros and a total turnover of more than 11.5 billion euros.</p> <p>In addition, the Spanish Interprofessional will organise several commercial and institutional meetings. Among these, the most notable will be the visit to the stand of the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, for what it implies in terms of support for the sector from the authorities. This will be followed the same evening by an institutional dinner attended by the entire ministerial delegation.</p> <p>Visitors to the fair will also be able to enjoy cooking demonstrations by chef Marcos Ramos, who will prepare various recipes using white pork. There will also be ham tastings led by master ham carver Raquel Acosta, who will demonstrate the quality and versatility of Spanish pork products.</p> <p>These activities will allow INTERPORC to 2704  Spanish pork sector is focusing on Mexico and Japan  In the last 10 years, pork exports to these markets have grown considerably, according to Interporc.  <p>Interporc, the Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork, intends to benefit from the new Trade Agreements signed between the EU and Mexico and Japan. Pork exports to these countries have grown considerably in the last decade and Spain wants to consolidate its presence in these markets.<br />Last year, Spanish pork exports to Japan have reached 117,627 tonnes and a 9.6% market share. The value exceeded 440 million euros, 9.2% of the total value of Japanese imports, which places Spain as the fourth supplier of pork to the Japanese market. Since 2008, the growth in Spanish pork exports to Japan is of almost 600%, from 17,323 tonnes to 117,617 tonnes, according to data collected by Interporc.<br />Also, Mexico is another market where Spanish pork exports have increased by 400% in volume in the last years. Mexico pork industry covers only 60% of the domestic consumption, annual imports reaching 1.1 million tonnes of pork. Spanish exports of pork to Mexico exceeded 2,500 tons last year and 22.4 million euros, positioning the European country as the fourth largest supplier, after the United States, Canada and Chile. In 2008, Spain pork exports to Mexico stood at 610 tonnes.<br />Spain is taken as an example by the British pork industry who is trying to create a similar strategy for its exports. In 2018, Spain exported 1.7 million tonnes of pig meat (product weight), 1.5% more than a year earlier. "Pigmeat exports to the EU fell by 2%, to 1.1 million tonnes in 2018. Exports to non-EU destinations grew by 7.5% to 600,000 tonnes. Spanish exporters have been very successful in growing their extra EU export volumes in recent years, underpinning the expansion in national production. Non-EU exports accounted for 20% of total export volumes five years ago, but in 2018 they contributed over a third. 1015  Spanish pork products are compliant with food safety system in the US  An audit conducted by FSIS declared the Spanish pork inspection equivalent to the one existing on the American market.  <p>The most recent onsite audit Spain&rsquo;s inspection system for raw and processed pork product made by USDA found that the European country is following the same rules on the food safety field like those established in the US.<br />"The purpose of the audit was to determine whether Spain&rsquo;s food safety system governing slaughtered and processed meat remains equivalent to that of the United States, with the ability to export products that are safe, wholesome, unadulterated, and correctly labeled and packaged", said the report released by USDA&rsquo;s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).<br />The American authorities have conducted different controls on the Spanish pork products imported between 2014 and 2017 and visits to five meat processing plants, two meat slaughter facilities and a public health laboratory located in Spain. Still, some adjustments have to be made by the Spanish authorities to respond the requirements of the US counterpart. "Spain did not adequately verify that establishments met government sanitation requirements that ensure ventilation is sufficient to control condensation to protect the product and prevent the creation of unsanitary conditions,&rdquo; said the FSIS report, quoted by <a href="https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2018/03/new-audit-finds-spains-pork-inspections-equivalent-to-u-s/#.Wrt9TX9DO00">Food Safety News</a>.<br />At this time, Spain, who is also the largest pork producer in the EU, exports raw and further processed pork products to the United States. The non-EU countries that have most increased their demand for pork and processed pork products from Spain are South Korea (+ 67.3%), Japan (+ 7.5%) and China (+ 4.2%).<br />Spain is also the cuntry that is curently increasing its pig population, hoping to set a stronger foothold in this markets and to open new ones in the near future. 735  Spanish pork exports reach record sum in 2017  Spain's pork exports exceeded for the first time a value of 5,000 million euros in 2017, while the country's pig sector reached a turnover worth 15,000 million euros, an increase which was correlated with a direct increase in wealth and employment in many of Spain's rural areas, according to the director of the Interprofessional of Porcino de Capa Blanca (INTERPORC), Alberto Herranz.  <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>Last week, during a press conference, Mr. Herranz presented fresh data regarding the evolution of the Spanish pig sector in 2017. Growth was only 4% in Q1. For the first half of the year overall, volumes were therefore 8% higher at 1.08 million tonnes. The value of Spanish exports in the first half of the year totaled &euro;2.64 billion, up 12% from a year earlier.</p> <p>Expansion in the Spanish pig herd has boosted production by 2% (+48,500 tonnes). As such, more pork has been available for export in the first half of this year. When converted to carcass weight equivalent, exports are around 40,000 tonnes higher. The figure is double compared with the one reported last April (28) and helps consolidate Spain's position as the main supplier of pork in the Chinese market. 8 new Spanish plants have been approved for pork exports to China in the first week of April and others are expected to gain access in this market until the end of the year.<br />Since last year, Spain is the world's leading exporter of meat and pork products to China, ahead of Germany, Brazil, the United States or Denmark.<br />The main products exported are pork meat and offal, which have accounted for 55.3% of total agricultural exports from Spain to China in 2019 (in 2018 they represented 35.5% of the total). The weight gain is driven by a changing trend of production, with race Pietrain being dropped in favour of Duroc breed, characterized by a for a better meat quality in terms of marbling and colour.</p> <p>17% of the slaughtered pig in the Spanish market was Duroc blood, according to SIP data, cited by Mercedes Vega.
