5957 | Stable year for SPF-Denmark despite turmoil in the market | A minor decline in turnover and small progress on the bottom line signal a year without major fluctuations, but the story behind SPF-Danmark's accounts is completely different. | <p><span lang="DE">The financial year 2021/22 was characterized by large fluctuations in the prices of piglets, turnover difficulties, great variation in transported fattening pigs throughout the year and significant price increases in relation to the operation of 135 pig trucks for national transport tasks.</span></p> <p><span lang="EN-GB">"</span><span lang="DE">We have had a year in which there has really been a need for an effort beyond the usual on the part of our employees. In the first half of the year, we had quite a lot of fattening pigs to transport, which drew big changes. Corona effects in daily operations and large quantities of slaughter placed extraordinary demands on efficient planning of the transports. The piglet turnover has been characterized by a very volatile market with large shifts in the balance between supply and demand. In other words, every corner of the company has gone to great lengths to service our customers, so I am actually very satisfied with our result," says Jens Kongensholm, CEO of SPF-Denmark.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">SPF-Danmark came out of the financial year 2021/22 with a turnover of DKK 862.7 million ( 1 DKK = 0,13 EUR) compared to DKK 872.2 million in the previous year. A drop of just over one percent. The profit after tax, on the other hand, increases from DKK 7.1 million to DKK 7.4 million, which is an increase of just over four percent.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Towards the end of the financial year, SPF Danmark expanded its activities when the company, together with VikingDanmark, bought the Kolding Export Center, which for many years has functioned as a collection center for SPF-Danmark's export of piglets.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"We have a strong, well-invested and flexible setup, so we are well prepared to face the major changes that are currently taking place in pig production across Europe. 2117 | Stable sales for Atria in the first 9 months | <p>The company's EBIT was down to €21.5 million in the mentioned period from €27.5 million in 2017, which was attributed to the poor profits reported in Sweden and Russia due to currency fluctuations.</p> <p>Atria saw good results in the markets from Finland, Denmark and Estonia, but its business suffered in Sweden and Russia because of a weak krona and rouble and the increase in prices for raw materials.</p> <p>"“The moderately good economy has had a positive impact on consumer demand, and market development has remained favorable in all the countries in our business areas. The poultry and convenience food product groups showed the largest growth. Eating out continues to increase its popularity, yielding interesting opportunities for increasing Food Service sales. On the other hand, the increased demand has raised the costs of several materials, supplies and services. Price competition has continued strong," said Juha Gröhn, CEO Atria.</p> <p>"In Sweden, the growth and profitability targets were not reached. 454 | SSA: NARMS should include seafood in its drug resistance monitoring program | The Southern Shrimp Alliance (SSA) urged the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to add fish and seafood on the list of products that is surveilled through the National Antimicrobial Resistance Monitoring System (NARMS). | <p> </p> <p>As currently organized, NARMS allows the public to access data regarding incidents of detection of antimicrobial resistant pathogens for seven different bacterium (including salmonella, e.coli, and campylobacter) related to cattle, swine, chicken, and turkey products. No seafood products are currently covered by the monitoring system, according to SSA.</p> <p>The group that represents shrimp fishermen and processors in the southern US says that seafood products should be also monitored after a research showed the presence of resistant Salmonella in imported shrimp.</p> <p>A Science Board review of NARMS, completed in June, observed that there was “interest in expanding monitoring to fish and other seafood, such as tilapia, salmon and shrimp.” The Science Board recommended sampling seafood along with other meat products.</p> <p>The members of the Southern Shrimp Alliance are increasingly concerned by the prevalent use of antimicrobials in shrimp aquaculture outside of the United States. As the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) appropriately recognizes, the presence of certain antimicrobial residues in food products creates health risks for consumers. This, in turn, adversely impacts<br />consumer confidence in shrimp products available for consumption in the US market.</p> <p>SSA says that because the US regulatory system for country-of-origin labeling is weak – with no such requirements in place for food purchased and consumed in restaurants – any reduction in consumer confidence has<br />a direct negative effect on the market for US wild-caught and farm-raised shrimp.</p> <p>Furthermore, SSA says that a coalition group called "Keep Antibiotics Working" also supports the expansion of the monitoring program to “incorporate sampling of imported foods, including imported animal feed, feed ingredients, and seafood, into NARMS.”</p> <p>Keep Antibiotics Working is composed of the Center for Food Safety; John Hopkins Center for a Livable Future; the Antibiotic Resistance Action Center, the George Washington University; the Center for Foodborne Illness Research & Prevention; Food Animal Concerns Trust (FACT); the U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG); The Humane Society of the United States; the Humane Society Legislative Fund; and Natural Resources Defense Council.</p> <p>Keep Antibiotics Working observed that “there is ample evidence that there are different antibiotic resistance risks between countries with some countries having much higher level of clinically important resistance in bacteria from meat and seafood.” Accordingly, the coalition “recommends sampling seafood” while emphasizing “examining imported food for seafood [as] this means most seafood marketed in the U.S. since most is imported.”</p> | 1 | Industry | 2017-11-28 10:00:02 | 2025-07-22 01:31:14 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5382 | Spray system replaces film interleaves for sliced products | Greater efficiency, lower costs, less plastic and still the same taste and convenience: When MULTIVAC exhibits at the two leading trade fairs, Anuga FoodTec 2022 (Hall 8.1, Stand C010) and IFFA 2022 (Hall 11.1, Stand B11), it will be showing a future-proof solution for packing thinly sliced or very sticky sliced products as part of a slicer line. Thanks to MULTIVAC's innovative Sustainable Liquid Interleaving spray system, there is no requirement for the conventional interleaving film between the individual product slices, and the consumption of plastics during packing can therefore be reduced to the bare minimum. | <p>This process has long been standard with bakery products and sweets. Now MULTIVAC is presenting a versatile spray system, which has been specially developed for packing sliced sausage, ham and cheese or vegan alternatives. The solution can even be used with wafer-thin cut portions (e.g. shaved meat), for which the classic interleaver is not suitable. The space-saving spray system can be easily integrated into new or existing slicer lines. The individual slices are presented very attractively in the pack. Above all however, the slices do not stick to each other, and they can be removed cleanly by the consumer.</p> <p><strong>The functioning principle is simple - and perfectly designed for the product</strong></p> <p>The precision nozzles on the new spray system atomise a liquid interleaving medium, which is both odourless and tasteless and can be tailored to the particular properties, e.g. fat content, of the sliced product. The interleaving medium is applied evenly to the underside of the slices. The taste, quality and shelf life of the product are not impaired.</p> <p>The solution also however offers further benefits - particularly in terms of cost-effectiveness. “During our reference calculations, in which we simulated the slicing and packing of cheese, the typical film interleaves made of polystyrene generated total costs of around 3,800 euros per day. The daily costs for the interleaving liquid on the other hand amounted to only 425 euros - this equates to a saving of 85 percent,” explains Manfred Achenbach Senior Vice President of the Slicing Business Unit. The total time involved in refilling the interleaving liquid is up to 95 percent less than that for replenishing and threading the interleaver rolls. Other benefits of the spray system include: less storage space required, longer service life of slicer blades, and also less use of materials.</p> <p><strong>Trade fair exhibit</strong></p> <p>MULTIVAC will be showing the spray system at both trade fairs on a high-performance line featuring a slicer and thermoforming packaging machine. The modules for the automatic slicing, infeeding, packaging and labelling of the sliced product are integrated completely into one line, and they can all be operated efficiently and reliably from the HMI of the packaging machine or slicer thanks to the centralised MULTIVAC Line Control.</p> <p>As part of the demo operation of the line, the product logs are sliced in multi-track format by the slicer, which also sprays each slice with the interleaving liquid. The individual portions are subsequently inspected on a checkweigher. Portions with the incorrect weight are ejected by means of a rocker for later weight correction by hand, while portions with the correct weight are conveyed onwards on a transport conveyor, before being grouped according to the format layout of the thermoforming packaging machine. The portions slide into the pack cavities during the advance, and the optimum loading results are achieved thanks to the flat loading angle. After the products have been packed under modified atmosphere, the MAP packs arrive at the cross web labellers, which apply the required labels to the top and base of the packs.</p> <p><strong>More added value</strong></p> <p>The technology has already been proven many times in practice. 6612 | SPF-Danmark is moving into the former Skare head office | At the beginning of November, SPF-Danmark will move into parts of the administration buildings at the now former head office of the Skare Group, which Danish Crown bought back in the spring. | <p>On 1 April this year, Danish Crown took over the Skare group's 120,000 square meter plot in Vejen with approximately 14,000 square meter buildings.</p> <p>At the beginning of November, there will be activity again on the register, because the transport company SPF-Danmark expects to move in there. SPF-Danmark, which is part of Danish Crown, will move in the newest part of the administration buildings.</p> <p>"Overall, it makes good sense for us in SPF to move in to utilize approximately half of the administration part. With the move, Danish Crown is satisfied with having one address in Vejen instead of two, while there is still plenty of space for other activities in the remaining buildings", says Jens Kongensholm, CEO of SPF-Danmark. He goes on to say that, with the move, SPF-Danmark is looking forward to getting closer to the value chain for food production, which the work with pig transport is ultimately about. </p> <p>"It is very important to me that we move our culture and identity into the new framework. We cannot avoid that for many of us it will be a bit sad to walk out the door for the last time at Drejervej 7. 6212 | Specialization is a major asset for Schils young animal feeds | Schils BV of Sittard in Limburg has been one of the largest internationally successful manufacturers of young animal feed for years. The company — a subsidiary of the VanDrie Group — specialises in the development, production and sale of milk replacement products for young animals, such as calves, piglets, lambs and kids. Schils stands out because the company is more than just a manufacturer. The company also has the right specialists in-house for the best young animal products. Paul Steeghs, technical specialist in piglet rearing, is an obvious example of this. | <p>He ran his own pig farm for 22 years, and knows the industry inside out; in 2017 he joined <strong>Schils</strong> where he is able to put his practical knowledge to good use. "Piglet feed has become increasingly specialised in recent years, so Schils was looking for a professional. That was when I came into the picture," explains Steeghs, who works with a business development manager and a nutrition specialist on the Schils piglet team.</p> <p>At Schils, practical knowledge and specialisation have helped develop a wide range of animal feeds for piglets in recent years. They also produce semi-finished products. Steeghs: "We are very confident of the quality of the animal feeds we can supply to our customers. One of Schils’ strengths is that, with our practical knowledge, our customers can always find what they need within our existing range.” Even so, a tailored approach is always an option. “We can supply exactly what the customer needs," says Steeghs.</p> <p>The Schils range for piglets ensures healthy, optimum growth. Schils distinguishes itself with its specialists’ willingness to experience how their products are received by the animals on location. Steeghs supports his Dutch customers in the areas of piglet feed and management for up to two weeks after weaning. "The knowledge we gain in this country is also valuable to our sales and support abroad,” says Steeghs. “When we have a new customer, I visit them several times a week at the start. Does the product do what we expect it to? Can any minor adjustments be made? Could the customer do something different themselves?" Steeghs’ practical experience is often of great benefit in such cases. He illustrates this with an example of a customer for whom the initial feeds were an immediate success, while the follow-on milk wasn’t. "I noticed that the feed system required adjustment, which resolved the problem with the follow-on milk. Thanks to my experience as a pig farmer, and frequent visits to customers, we at Schils keep on learning and are able to provide optimum support. This is a major advantage and it works both ways."</p> <p>Every day, the Schils team collaborates with international partners in the market. This is a partnership the company is proud of. The team in Limburg is in contact with sales staff in domestic and foreign markets. The lines are short, and if a request for a solution comes in from abroad, the specialists can resolve this anywhere in the world.</p> <p>Schils is active in no fewer than 75 countries; from Europe, Central and South America to Africa, Asia and Oceania. "We are everywhere, and we’re also developing new markets," says Steeghs. Brazil is a great example of a growth market. "There are a lot of sows, and the challenge is to provide the piglets with optimum supplementary nutrition and boost productivity." In that regard, Schils carried out some interesting research in the Netherlands: manually supplementing Schils milk products in powder form. When Steeghs later travelled to Brazil - where there are far fewer automatic feed systems - he tested these feeds with the international partner. "That was a success, because in contrast to the Netherlands, it is often impossible to mix water and powder in Brazil. Supplementing by hand worked out very well. In this way, we use the knowledge gained in our own country to provide our Brazilian customers with better support."</p> <p>In order to further optimise piglet rearing, Steeghs has introduced various automatic and flexible feed systems at Schils. The best-known example is the self-designed ALFF system, which gets the very best out of the Schils products. ALFF provides fresh piglet milk 24 hours a day, fully automated, and the system can be relocated quickly and easily. Hundreds have been sold around the world. In Spain alone - a piglet market with a lot of competition - Schils has sold a hundred of these ALFF systems. "The system has undergone trials and proven its worth in practice. Our customers are very enthusiastic."</p> <p>Since then, Steeghs has also developed a successor to this system: the ALFFcup. Schils presented the new ALFF system during EuroTier 2022 in November, and two of these systems are now operational in the Netherlands. The ALFFcup system is an automatic feed system for piglet milk and liquid pre-starters. What is unique about the ALFFcup system is that the cups are not fitted as standard in every farrowing pen. Within this modular system, the cups are placed where and when required. The system can be scaled up quickly and easily, with one main aim: to reduce the number of foster sows per group to zero! 4220 | SPAR is strengthening the Hungarian meat market with another plant | <p>“The most important goal of SPAR is to deliver quality products from controlled raw materials - as many local as possible - to the customers' tables. This is no different in the fresh meat and meat products segment, where we can continuously adapt the production of our products to the changes of consumer needs through our own Regnum Meat Factory in Bicske. Due to increased demand in the recent period, we have decided to expand our production capacity. The SPAR Group has been expanded with a high-capacity, high-quality unit, which further strengthens our position in the domestic meat market, ”said Gabriella Heiszler, Managing Director of SPAR Magyarország Kereskedelmi Kft.</p> <p>The Perbál plant will be called Regnum Meat Factory Perbál in the future. The products manufactured here will be available in SPAR's own network and in all franchise stores, and the production processes of the Perbal plant will be coordinated with the activities of the Bicske meat factory. Several major improvements will be made to the new plant in the near future, including the modernization of cooling technology. From a quality management point of view, as in the existing plant, the processes in Perbál will be operated according to the ISO 22 000 system: the planned date for obtaining the certification is the next two years.</p> <p>“The Perbal plant will continue to operate in SPAR’s food production business from 2 November. Our product range is constantly expanding and by the end of the year, the first SPAR products will arrive from Perbál to the entire SPAR network. The approximately 200 employees working here will be able to continue working, now within the SPAR Group. Together with them, the SPAR team in the food production business will be strengthened by about 600 professionals. With the expansion, our own branded product range will become larger and the Hungarian product range will be strengthened. Today, products derived from pork contain less salt, less fat and incorporate beneficial substances for our organism. | <p>Easily digestible in general, white pork meat has a high biological and nutritional value, as it provides quality protein and contains all the essential amino acids that are essential for the optimal development of muscle mass, along with minerals such as iron, phosphorus or zinc, which are essential for the maintenance of bones and teeth. 6628 | Spanish white pork sector: working to protect the environment | The Spanish white pork sector embodies “modern livestock handling”: professionalized, innovative, respectful of the sensitivity and needs of the animals, and focused on caring for the environment and reducing environmental impact. | <p>To this end, few sectors have made as many efforts as the white pork sector, having reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) per each kilo of meat by 57% and nitrogen emissions by 50% per animal in the last 30 years.</p> <p>It should be noted that, despite occupying a significant percentage of the territory and generating an activity with many production centers (66,000 farms) and 415,000 jobs, our weight over the national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a whole it is barely 2.43%.</p> <p><img style="display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;" src="/files/pictures/article/Captura_1.jpg?1690789037487" alt="Captura_1" width="400" /></p> <p>All these data show (during a period of great growth in sectoral production) that thanks to the optimization of livestock feeding, genetic and management systems and the application of the best available livestock management practices, the sector has increased enormously its productive efficiency. 5493 | Spanish white pork sector: proactivity and leadership at the service of consumers | As an initiative of the white pork sector itself, INTERPORC has developed the 'Welfare Commitment Certified' seal, which endorses the good practices carried out not only in animal welfare, but also in food safety, handling, animal health and biosecurity. | <p>In this sense, the INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain (IAWS) certification is defined and distinguished by a series of elements:</p> <ul> <li>The IAWS Technical Regulation is a document endorsed by an animal welfare scientific committee of experts that provides the necessary component of science and evaluates and decides on any modification to be applied in the Technical Regulation, updated and in continuous evolution when there is new animal welfare research and consumers concern increase.</li> <li>The IAWS Technical Regulation is a public document, so there is nothing to hide and shows an exercise of total transparency.</li> <li>The IAWS Technical Regulation will be accredited in the future by the National Accreditation Body (ENAC) and therefore can be an internationally recognized certification.</li> <li>In order to audit the IAWS Technical Regulation, auditors must be qualified and have specific training, as being from the animal health and production field (veterinarians, agronomists, etc.). In addition, the training offered on the self-control system is completely free.</li> <li>As an interprofessional, INTERPORC cannot receive, and does not receive, any financial benefit from the IAWS certification. In other words, that existing farms can manage manure in a more efficient way and adopt treatment systems and value these natural fertilizers without increasing the number of animals that are raised in these areas.<br />In Catalonia, there are approximately 8 million pigs, 700,000 cattle and 38 million birds that each year generate about 17 million tons of slurry and 4.4 million tons of manure and chicken manure, according to Carnica magazine.<br />105 farms have their own treatment systems which means the management of 34% of the surplus slurry. Besides, 50% of the surpluses are treated by companies specialized in waste.
