NZ lamb exports expected to surpass $3 billion for the first time

The average lamb export value is expected to reach $9,800 per ton, with an increase of 14% compared to last season, while the export volume is expected to rise by 0.7%, remaining steady.

Analysts at Beef + Lamb NZ expect an increase of 661 cents per kilogram for the average farm-gate price for lambs, which will reach $122 per head (up by 15% compared to the average price reported last season). The rise in prices is based on the higher proportion processed earlier in the season at good prices. The forecast at the start of the season was 555 cents per kilogram.

Mutton sales are forecast to also increase by 11% to $602 million. The average value per mutton ton should rise by 24% to $6,500 "more than offsets the forecast 7.3 per cent drop in mutton export volume."

According to Beef + Lamb NZ these factors have supported strong farm gate prices for mutton, which are estimated to be up by 37% to average 394 cents per kilogram for the 2017 18 season.
