Thailand receives the green light for poultry exports to Saudi Arabia
Poultry exports from Thailand to Saudi Arabi will be resumed starting next month, according to the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. 11 processing plants have passed the inspection tests and are allowed to ship chilled, frozen and processed chicken in the Saudi market. Five of those units are owned by Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) Thailand and executives of the company expressed their hopes to increase export figures in the following months. "Saudi Arabia is a high potential market with a population of more than 35.6 million. It is also a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, for which food makes up 52.7% of imports", mentioned Prasit Boondoungprasert, director and member of the CpF executive committee, in a statement for Pattaya Mail newspaper. According to him, the Saudi population consumes about 1.5 million tonnes of chicken a year, of which 590,000 tonnes is imported from different parts of the world.
