Automatic pig carcass scanner gets homologated in Spain and Poland

GM Steel Fabricators, an Ireland-based company specialized in producing equipment and services for abattoirs and processing plants of all sizes, announced that its Automatic pig carcass scanner was homologated by the competent bodies in two European countries.
In June, PIGSCAN system successfully carried out the trials required by the regulators in Spain and Poland, reports Feedstuffs magazine.
"PIGSCAN has been developed in collaboration with Lenz Instruments from Barcelona and with financial assistance from the EU 7th Framework Programme for Research & Development in the Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, and Biotechnology Industries.
PIGSCAN technology will give a simple result for lean meat vs fat yields in pigs, which with knowledge of the carcass weight will produce a volume of lean meat yield from the carcass.
With additional funding from the Horizon 2020 Programme, we hope to commercialise the technology, which is intended for small and medium-sized meat processors", informs the company.
The automatic scanner has been designed for the classification of pig carcasses in a vertical position, which facilitates the integration of the system in the slaughter line and significantly reduces its integration costs. "The grading of the four prime cuts still in the whole carcass will allow the slaughterhouse to optimize their subsequent production processes (cutting, further processing, labelling, and packing) and to ensure that the best raw material/the-right cuts are destined for the right process or commercial product', mentioned the producer.
The system is designed to be used without an operator and will require minimum modification of the processing line. PIGSCAN employs a contact-less inspection method that preserves the integrity and physical characteristics of the meat and avoids the risk of cross-contamination. Besides Lenz Instruments Barcelona, the project has attracted partners like Vion Food, Danish Technological Institute and Institut de Recerca i Tecnologies Agroalimentaries (IRTA) from Spain.
