Livestock and swine industries support Mexican government measures to protect national production

This decision reflects the coordinated work between the Ministries of Agriculture, Economy, and Finance and Public Credit.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (AGRICULTURA) welcomed the position of the livestock production sectors, who expressed their recognition of the recent updates to the Decree and Agreement published in the Official Gazette of the Federation, regarding the Package Against Inflation and High Prices (PACIC).

These measures, promoted by the Government of President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo, establish a tariff for the import of beef and pork from countries with which Mexico does not have a Free Trade Agreement, but also establish maximum tariff-free import quotas, defined at 70,000 tons for beef and 51,000 tons for pork.

This decision reflects the coordinated work between the Ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development, Economy, and Finance and Public Credit to guarantee market stability.

The National Confederation of Livestock Organizations (CNOG) described this decision as momentous, noting that it protects the national production plant and directly benefits 750,000 small and medium-sized cattle producers.

The organization also highlighted that this scheme allows for supplementing national consumption without inhibiting domestic production, guaranteeing the supply of healthy and safe food for 130 million Mexicans.

On the other hand, the Mexican Pork Producers Organization (Opormex) celebrated the establishment of the quota system, which sends a signal of stability and prevents unfair practices that could structurally affect national production. The organization emphasized that this measure represents a responsible balance between the objective of containing inflation and the need to strengthen food sovereignty, with the goal of the national industry supplying 70 percent of the domestic market by 2030.

The Government of Mexico reaffirms that the supply of beef and pork is guaranteed and that these actions are aligned with the Mexico Plan, prioritizing the well-being of producer families, the generation of rural employment and the food security of the population.

The Ministry of Agriculture will continue to promote co-responsibility and close monitoring of the implementation of these decrees to ensure that the agri-food sector operates with certainty and a long-term vision.
