5345 | Brazil to remain the world's top poultry producer | Over the next decade, poultry exports are projected to rise to 5.2 million tonnes. |
The poultry sector in Brazil will continue to dominate the global market over the next 10 years, according to a projection released by USDA. Global chicken consumption will grow by 16.7% through 2031. Projected demand growth for all meats is highest among developing regions such as Southeast Asia, Latin America, Africa, and the Middle East.
The report shows that poultry meat has the highest growth in production and consumption compared to beef and pork. This is because poultry production has shown stronger growth in low and middle-income countries (20.8%) than in richer countries (8.5%). Annual poultry meat imports might increase 2.6 million tonnes (20.3%), reaching 15.8 million tonnes in 2031. Larger growth will be concentrated at emerging markets in Asia, Latin America, Sub-Saharan Africa, and the Middle East. Russia, Ukraine, the European Union, Taiwan and Canada are projected to show a much slower pace of growth. Poultry imports in Africa and the Middle East regions are expected to grow by 22.3% and 16.8%, respectively.
According to the report, Brazil may account for 32.5% of global export growth over the next decade, with shipments rising 19.6% to 5.2 million tonnes by 2031. During the same time, US chicken exports could increase 13.9% to 4.3 million tonnes next decade. The EU is expected to grow poultry foreign trade by 15.9% to almost 2.9 million tonnes, while Thailand, favoured by its geographical location, should up by 31.7% to 1.4 million tons.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-08 10:13:24 | 2025-07-26 16:39:56 | Details Edit Delete | ||

The movement is to meet the rising demand for high animal welfare standards and antibiotic-free products.
Mr. Somkid Wannalukkhee, senior vice president for egg business in Thailand at CP Foods, said the company commits to being a business operation based on humane treatment to animals by raising layer chicken in a cage-free housing system. The effort is along with its global Animal Welfare Policy and to achieve its new sustainability strategy “CPF 2030 Sustainability in Action”.

This year, the company targets to increase the production of cage-free eggs to 20 million, an increase of 4 million from the previous year. The company is always ready to raise capacity in line with market demand and plans to export overseas. Hong Kong is the first destination.
“The cage-free farming is one of the animal welfare movement’s biggest successes to strengthen food safety standards in egg products for consumers and also promote sustainable consumption,” said Somkid.
At present, CP Foods’ Cage-Free eggs are from Wang Somboon Farm in Saraburi Province, the first layer cage-free farm in Thailand that is certified by Thailand’s Department of Livestock Development for Cage-Free farming.
The laying hens are naturally raised in closed-system houses recognized ‘Five freedoms’ principles: consisting of freedom from hunger and thirst, freedom from discomfort, freedom from pain, injury and disease, freedom from fear and distress, and freedom to express animal instincts and behavior. As a result, the hens are happy, healthy, and antibiotic-free throughout their lives.
The farm is managed in accordance with internationally-recognized animal welfare principles, including a 15 cm per hen for linear perch space, multiple enrichments that allow hens to express their natural behaviors. All system digitally controls the environment throughout the farm.
The special breed laying hens are fed 100% grains to keep chickens in good health and reaching their full genetic potential. The quality of CP Foods cage-free eggs is identical to premium export eggs that are odor-free and can be eaten raw.
CP Foods’ cage-free eggs are fresher, have bright orange egg yolks, and also antibiotic-free. All products have to go through a “Freshness Test” tool to ensure that they are all of the same quality, informed the company.
In addition to the quality of product, CP Foods has introduced a digital product traceability system, printing a safe color on the eggshell to identify the farm that it came from. CP Foods’ cage-free eggs come with sustainable packages, choosing egg trays made from 100% recycled paper.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-09 08:03:20 | 2025-07-27 03:13:55 | Details Edit Delete | ||

5350 | 930 bird flu outbreaks reported in one month and a half | US poultry industry triggers alarm as the virus "imported" from Northern Europe has spread across 13 states. |
According to the latest FAO report, 930 bird flu outbreaks have been reported in the last 45 days across the globe. The US is the latest country to be confronted with multiple bans in various markets (the Philippines, Mexico etc) as the virus is now spread across 13 states in both poultry farms and wild birds. Outbreaks were found in domesticated flocks in Maryland, Missouri, Indiana, Connecticut and Iowa last week, as the virus continued to spread across North America, according to the United States Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS).
A preprint study by scientists from the USDA which has not yet been peer-reviewed found evidence that the latest outbreak of bird flu in North America was transmitted from Northern Europe over the Atlantic Ocean, the first documented introduction of a Eurasian HPAI via the Atlantic Flyway to the US.

The study also found that while HPAI in wild birds was usually tied to spillover from domestic birds, it seems that such viruses are now being maintained in wild bird populations as well, with researchers adding that this highlights the importance of monitoring wild birds.

The CDC noted that while the H5N1 viruses detected in late 2021 and 2022 are different from earlier H5N1 viruses, they still lack changes seen in the past that have been associated with viruses spreading more easily among poultry, infecting people more easily and causing severe illness in people.
A large number of bird flu outbreaks have been reported throughout Europe, Africa and Asia in recent weeks and months, mostly due to the H5N1 subtype, which comes from the H5 lineage, according to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). The organization warned that a further increase in outbreaks is expected in the coming months.

| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-11 08:09:48 | 2025-07-26 15:31:31 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5351 | Aussie goatmeat exports to South Korea are growing | US remains the largest market for Australian goatmeat but exporters are also targeting the British market. |
South Korea is emerging as one of Australia’s fastest growing goatmeat export markets by value and volume, almost doubling its Australian goatmeat imports in 2021. It is now the second largest export market for Australian goatmeat, claiming the position from Taiwan which had held the title since 2000. In the January to September 2021 period, the value of Australian goatmeat exports to South Korea increased 107% compared to the same period in 2020. The value of exports to South Korea is expected to further increase under the Korea–Australia Free Trade Agreement (KAFTA), which will see import tariffs drop to 2.2% this year and 0% in 2023, announced Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA).
In terms of volume and value, the US remains the largest market for Aussie goatmeat, accounting for around 66% of exports, with a 47% year-on-year increase in volume. In the 2021 calendar year, goatmeat exports to the US were valued at $167 million, up from just under $100 million in 2020.
Meantime, growing consumer demand in the United Kingdom combined with the Australia-United Kingdom Free Trade Agreement (A-UK FTA) could open up further export potential for the Australian goatmeat industry.
The UK has significant and growing populations that enjoy goatmeat, with imports trending up over the past 25 years and averaging around 550 tonnes per year over the past five years.
In the 12 months to November 2021, the UK imported around 830 tonnes shipped weight (swt) of goatmeat valued at just under A$5 million. The main supplier of goatmeat to the UK is Spain with 83% volume share in 2021, followed by Greece (10%), Ireland (3%) and Australia (2%).
In 2021, the production volume and value of Australian goatmeat started to increase for the first time since 2017.

The downward trend had been largely due to unfavourable seasonal conditions and COVID-19 disruptions to foodservice channels globally, which is a main selling channel for Australian goatmeat exports. Australian goatmeat export values generally continue to rise, with the average unit value in 2021 of A$12.55/kg swt. The goat over the hook (OTH) indicator is now just under 900c/kg carcase weight. According to FAO data, Australia remains the top global goatmeat exporter in volume and value, followed by Ethiopia, Kenya and Spain.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-14 08:31:15 | 2025-07-27 07:42:55 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5352 | New record set in Filipino meat imports | The Southeast Asian country imported 1.16 million tonnes of meat last year. |
The Philippines’s meat imports in 2021 reached a new record-high of 1.165 million tonnes, driven by higher pork purchases abroad as the country plugged the shortfall in domestic supply due to African swine fever.
Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) data showed that total meat imports last year was 30.29% higher than the 894,698.528 tonnes recorded in 2020, the previous highest import volume by the country.
The country’s pork imports in 2021 more than doubled to 554,697.998 tonnes from 256,017.459 tonnes in 2020 as a result of the government’s twin measures to boost domestic pork supply.
The government lowered pork tariffs last year and expanded its minimum access volume (MAV) by 200,000 MT to limit the increazse in prices by securing a larger supply of meat in the domestic market. The country has been reeling from the impact of ASF on the local pig production, which was down by 20% last year. Imports of pork bellies and pork cuts, which benefited from lower tariffs and expanded MAV, accounted for half of the total pork volume imported last year. Volume of imported pork bellies and pork cuts reached 272,634.023 tonnes, nearly triple the 92,442 tonnes imported in 2020, based on BAI data. Spain was the largest pig meat supplier in the Filipino market last year ( 139,211.662 tonnes), followed by Canada (105,863.273 tonnes) and the United States (66,224.315 tonnes).

The country’s chicken meat imports last year grew slightly to 404,711.559 tonnes from 402,700.069 tonnes, as mechanically deboned meat (MDM) imports were down by 13% year-on-year due to constrained supplies.
The country’s imports of chicken leg quarters last year grew by 41.94% to 113,403.576 tonnes from 79,894.371 tonnes, while imports of chicken cuts increased by 3% year-on-year to 39,599.832 tonnes, based on BAI data.
Chicken MDM imports, which account for more than half of the annual chicken meat purchases abroad, fell to 236,742.040 tonnes from 273,814.91 tonnes. The lower chicken MDM imports was attributed to fewer sources abroad, as the Philippines banned most European suppliers due to bird flu concerns. The country’s top supplier of chicken meat last year was Brazil at 148,558.158 tonnes followed by the United States at 142,699.584 tonnes, BAI data reveals.
The same report mentioned that buffalo meat imports last year rose by 31.42% year-on-year to 45,479.574 tonnes from 34,606.228 tonnes, while beef imports declined by 20% year-on-year to 158,716.790 tonnes. Lamb imports plunged by 73% to 515.987 tonnes from 1,912.058 tonnes, while duck imports declined 41.8% to 56.691 tonnes from 97.421 tonnes, based on BAI data. Meanwhile, turkey imports last year rose by more than half to 1,505.345 tonnes from 979.968 tonnes in 2020.
| 1 | Market | 2022-03-14 09:04:04 | 2025-07-27 10:47:50 | Details Edit Delete | ||

5354 | US beef exports show strength | Beef exports totaled 119,066 metric tonnes, up 13% from a year ago, while value soared 57% to $1.03 billion. |
US beef industry started the year on a high note, with volume reaching 119,066 metric tonnes, up 13% from a year ago, while value soared 57% to $1.03 billion, according to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF). This was the third-highest value total on record – trailing only August and November of last year – and export value per head of fed slaughter set a new record, topping $500 for the first time.

“This is a truly remarkable run for US beef exports, and the momentum is not limited to our large Asian markets,” said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. “Regions such as Central America and the Caribbean contributed significantly to January export growth, and export value made strong gains in the Middle East.”

Beef exports to South Korea reached a record $2.38 billion in 2021, and demand didn’t miss a beat in January. Exports to Korea climbed 39% from a year ago to 29,578 tonnes, while export value nearly doubled to a record $316.5 million (up 99%). While US beef’s pandemic-era growth in Korea has been largely driven by soaring retail demand, the foodservice outlook is also brightening as health officials recently loosened social distancing requirements and allowed longer operating hours for restaurants. Korea’s tariff rate on US beef, which was 40% before the Korea-US Free Trade Agreement entered into force, dropped to 10.7% this year and will reach zero at the end of 2026.
Demand for US beef in China/Hong Kong remained strong in January, climbing 69% from a year ago to 19,772 tonnes, while export value more than doubled ($194.2 million, up 115%). USMEF projects continued growth for US beef in the region this year, though at a more moderate rate than in 2021 when export volume increased 87% year-over-year to more than 240,000 tonnes. Meaningful access to China – which was first achieved in early 2020 through the Phase One Economic and Trade Agreement – is also a supportive factor in the prices US beef cuts command in other Asian markets.
January beef exports to Japan were up 4% from a year ago at 22,936 tonnes, while value jumped an impressive 32% to $181.7 million. Exports were bolstered by a strong performance for beef variety meat – mainly tongues and skirts – which increased 20% in volume (4,367 mt) and 69% in value ($41.8 million).
Exports to Taiwan, the Middle East, Vietnam, Central America and the Caribbean have also contributed to the increase reported by USMEF for the first month of the year.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-15 12:02:27 | 2025-07-27 07:26:37 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5355 | Brazil gets access to the Canadian pork market | The opening is valid, at this first moment, for establishments under federal inspection located in the State of Santa Catarina. |
Brazilian pork gains access to the Canadian market, as both parties have agreed to allow pig meat and pork products produced in establishments located in the State Santa Catarina to be shipped to Canada. "At the time of the initial request, the state was the only one recognized as free of foot-and-mouth disease without vaccination, which is a criterion established by the Canadian authorities. Negotiations will continue for the inclusion, in the future, of new areas already recognized with the same status by the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE)," informs the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
Also, pork exports from Santa Catarina represent just over 50% of the sector's shipments, according to statistical data. Brazilian pork exports for the first two months of the year totaled 146,000 tonnes, a volume that is 1.3% higher than the one reported in the same period last year.

| 1 | Market | 2022-03-15 11:35:29 | 2025-07-27 04:02:52 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5356 | Japan is expected to increase pork imports | A drop in domestic production will favor exporters. |
This year, Japan's pig crop and pork production may be lower than expected, according to the latest USDA forecast. Greater pork production and slower rebuilding of the hog population in 2021 lowered sow beginning stocks in 2022, says the report. As a result, Japan's pork imports may increase this year to cover domestic consumption.
Stable household demand for pork pushed 2021 carcass prices above pre-COVID-19 levels in 2019. Despite the market risk caused by the pandemic, hog operators responded to strong prices by expanding hog slaughter and pork production by just over 1%. (16,836,873 head and 1,318,125 tonnes cwt of pork in 2021).
The strong market for pork production persists despite problems with classical swine fever (CSF). Even with the CSF vaccination program, some 100,000 head needed to be culled in 2021. Programs to rebuild the hog population with imported breeding sows have been underway since 2018, but 2021 global freight congestion has delayed implementation, and Japan’s imports of breeding swine in 2021 trended slower than 2020. As a result, the pace of slaughter exceeded the pace of stock rebuilding.

Recovering demand for pork in the foodservice industries plus continued steady retail demand suggests a strong market for pork consumption. High prices for beef may also drive greater demand for pork, which leads USDA to increase projections for Japan’s pork consumption in 2022. Though almost flat in 2021 from 2020, greater in-home cooking pushed pork consumption higher than before the 2019 COVID-19 outbreak, by about 8% for fresh or frozen pork, and 4% for processed products.
Japan’s pork imports are expected to be slightly higher to balance expected lower domestic pork production in 2022. However, growth in demand may exceed supplies owing to global supply chain disruptions. As a result, USDA anticipates that ending stocks of Japanese importers in 2022 will end lower.

Japan’s 2021 imports of chilled pork slightly exceeded 2019 levels, but frozen pork imports declined by a greater volume, making imports in 2021 still lower than 2019. In the end, Japan’s domestic ending stocks in 2021 were drawn lower on strong demand and slower imports. USDA expects that situation will continue for at least the first half of 2022.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-15 12:37:18 | 2025-07-26 12:37:14 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5357 | More profit potential with meat preparation | Poultry processors tend to harvest every gram of meat from their raw material to achieve optimal carcass balance. If they don't want to rely on third parties, meat preparation can be a profitable business for them with great potential. Properly prepared, the meat mass can result in an infinite number of tasty end products such as nuggets, meatballs and burgers. |
By offering the ideal mix of equipment and software, Marel has configured several specialized poultry meat preparation lines. They are the perfect link between the end of the secondary process and the beginning of processes for the manufacture of convenience food items.

Marel's specialized full-line nugget preparation system provides ideal conditions for the production of uniform and tasty nuggets of the highest quality. High-end mixing and grinding machines work together to prepare the meat in the best possible way. An infeed conveyor or a ColumnLoader supplies the raw meat material. After the pre-grinding process in a CombiGrind machine, ground meat is conveyed with a GirafConveyor to the vacuum Mixer, which gently mixes the product. If needed, nitrogen or CO2 can be added to obtain the correct temperature for the forming process. Once mixed, a Marel RevoPortioner forms the meat into uniform nuggets. This process particularly benefits from meat, suitably prepared in the meat preparation line. That is because it is essential that the meat has the proper structure and a consistent temperature after the forming process to guarantee uniform nuggets.

To prepare meat mass for poultry burgers, Marel's dedicated line produces batches of meat with the specific fat content demanded by the recipe. A ColumnLoader conveys fresh meat or a frozen block of meat to the CombiGrind machine. A FATscan analyzer makes it simple to measure, adjust and deliver the desired fat percentage for each batch. Connected to the main recipe control system, FATscan makes sure that the system is fed with a proper mix of incoming broiler carcass components. In this way, food producers can label their products consistently with the correct fat percentage.
Via a GirafConveyor, the meat mass is transported to the Mixer. The unique square intermeshing mixer ensures minimal and efficient mixing times. CO2 or nitrogen can be added for temperature purposes. With the preparation process done, it is possible to produce finished frozen burgers packed, and ready for dispatch.

When preparing poultry for meatball production, Marel's fully automated Meat Preparation Line is able to mix a meat mass uniformly to a required recipe, ideal for the best possible shaped meatballs. It is vital that each batch of meat has the right temperature and precisely the right fat content. Integrated online fat analysis simplifies measuring and ensures the best possible shape for optimal cooking with maximum yield. The square intermeshing mixers ensure uniformity of the finished product. This technique makes for faster, easier absorption of seasoning and other additives. The reduced mixing time minimizes the risk of smearing. CO2 can be added.

Marel's poultry meatball production lines give optimum control of the finished product and full traceability through each individual part of the process.

A central recipe management system is available for all preparation lines. This ensures consistent, uniform meat mass quality to meet precise specifications.

Marel's online recipe monitoring software ensures that the correct raw material is added to the batch at the right time to obtain a uniform product with a perfect texture. The system can create, edit and store recipes centrally. If required, a recipe can be adjusted from batch to batch via the control panel. Even routings can be specified for individual batches, leading possibly to small adjustments to the line configuration to align end products to the market.

Recipe management makes the system reliable and no longer dependent on human input. It provides integrated traceability as well as a batch reporting system. The system gives a complete overview of individual machine status as well as operation of the full line. This includes fault and alarm handling.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-03-17 09:30:13 | 2025-07-27 07:22:00 | Details Edit Delete | |
5358 | MULTIVAC presents a new full wrap labeller for random weight products | With its new L 312 model, MULTIVAC is launching onto the market a conveyor belt labeller, which now enables attractive full wrap labelling to be used for random weight products as well. The flexible and highly efficient solution will be shown to the public for the first time at Anuga FoodTec 2022 (Hall 8.1, Stand C010) and IFFA 2022 (Hall 11.1, Stand B11). |
Retail packs of high-quality meat and fish products in particular are often sold based on their weight. The products must first be weighed, the price calculated, and the information then printed onto the label. The new L 312 performs this task precisely and reliably. This full wrap labeller is augmented with an optional weigh price marking facility.

This has been achieved by equipping the high-performance and robust full wrap model with a weighing system, which can be calibrated and is already approved by most European countries - with plans for approval in other regions of the world. The weighing system determines the weight of the pack very precisely and transfers the calculated product price to the labeller. An integrated thermal transfer printer is then used to print all the relevant information onto the label, such as for example weight, price, best-before date and even barcode, and the print layout can be designed to the customer's particular requirements. The label is then dispensed onto the top of the pack, before being wrapped accurately around the pack like a banderole.

This robust model, which is constructed in a hygiene design, makes the automatic C and D labelling of packs possible at speeds of up to 120 per minute. If required, further label dispensers can be incorporated, so that additional top or bottom labels, as well as the full wrap label, can be applied to the pack.

The L 312 can be integrated into lines or used as a stand-alone solution with manual product infeed. It can also be integrated into MULTIVAC Line Control, which provides the maximum operating convenience. Thanks to the automated labelling process, producers and packers also benefit from a high level of precision, process reliability, and above all throughput. Since the setting parameters for the labeller, printer and weighing system are stored in the particular recipe, this also makes batch changes very fast, enabling downtime to be reduced to a minimum.

The benefits of full wrap labelling are now also available for random weight packs: attractive product presentation, high level of flexibility in the choice of label shape, material and adhesive, as well as maximum labelling accuracy, a large area for information, and an automatic labelling process. To provide additional security, the L 312 can also be equipped with optional label and print inspection.

And last but not least, this solution meets the increasing demands of the market in terms of not only efficiency and performance but also sustainability. Full wrap labelling scores heavily, when compared with cardboard sleeves, thanks to its high level of material efficiency: depending on the label material used, savings of up to 70 percent can be achieved on material costs.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-03-17 09:32:58 | 2025-07-26 02:32:35 | Details Edit Delete | |
5359 | INTERPORC: "Animal welfare and sustainable production are in our DNA” | The Spanish pig sector "is a success story that has been built on solid pillars, among which a sustainable production model and concern for animal welfare can be highlighted, principles that all agents of the value chain have internalized to form part of our DNA”. |
This was stated in Córdoba by the director of INTERPORC, Alberto Herranz, during his speech at the XII Forum of the National Association of Swine Veterinarians, where he outlined "the seven key pillars that have allowed the Spanish pig sector to become one of the great powers producers and exporters in the world and an international benchmark in sustainable production”.

Likewise, together with respect for the environment and animal welfare, Herranz listed the other five elements that, in his opinion, make up the DNA of the pig sector: innovation, professionalisation, contribution to the structuring of Spain and rural development, international vision of business and food safety.

From INTERPORC, he pointed out "we work with the companies to develop all these points, which has allowed the sector to consolidate itself in the world vanguard".

The next step, he added, “is to communicate it well so that Spanish society sees, beyond interested information and fake news, that the white-coated pig is a powerful and leading sector, as well as sustainable, job-generating and respectful of the environment. animal welfare.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-03-17 09:48:36 | 2025-07-26 13:36:45 | Details Edit Delete | |
5360 | Argentina sets new rules for beef exporters | Those who do not deliver meat at reduced prices in the domestic market will be banned from export. |
Argentina's Agriculture and Livestock Minister Julián Domínguez has warned beef exporters that those who fail to supply the local market in accordance with the Government's plan will be banned from selling their products abroad.

“I informed them that those who do not comply with the commitments assumed with the Argentine people will not be able to continue exporting beef,” said Domínguez on Twitter.
The official mentioned that the decision was made in the context of the Ukraine war that drove global increases in food prices. Minister Dominguez added that the country has a deficit of 1.5 million head of cattle necessary to keep control of the prices in the domestic market. The news was not well received by exporters, such as Consorcio ABC. They warned Secretary of Domestic Trade Roberto Feletti and Domínguez himself earlier this week that they were not going to continue with the Cared-for Cuts supply program, which allocates 12,000 tonnes per month to the local market, with 6,000 tonnes stemming from supermarket chains and the other 6,000 tons from exporters. In January 52,000 tonnes of beef were exported and in February it amounted to 62,000 tonnes. The sources said 82% stemmed from ABC, 2.4% from the Federacion de Industrias Frigoríficas Regionales (Fifra), and 4.5% from the Union de la Industria Carnica Argentina (Unica), while 11% came from operators without a plant. So far, 27,500 tonnes have already been approved for export in March.
An agreement between the beef industry and the government was signed a few months ago in order to deliver in the domestic 6,000 tonnes of beef/month at reduced prices. According to officials from the government, meat processing units have failed to respect the deal in February, covering only 2500 tonnes. A ban on Argentine beef exports has been placed since May last year but it was significantly changed in November. Meat prices, especially for beef, have been skyrocketing since the beginning of 2021 and officials have made these decisions to limit the impact on consumption.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-17 10:08:04 | 2025-07-27 06:28:46 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5361 | The war in Ukraine triggers alert among Scottish farmers | Within the Scottish red meat sector, pig producers are most exposed to rising global grain markets, QMS economist Iain Macdonald warns. |
After two years of market volatility caused by the global coronavirus pandemic, some may have hoped for a quieter 2022, characterised by greater certainty. However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine in late February has led to renewed market turbulence across the red meat supply chain, with the potential for even greater disruption than the pandemic, predicts Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) economist, Iain Macdonald in his latest market commentary.
“The current crisis has once again demonstrated the complexity of global supply chains and that a sustainable and secure food supply must remain a key consideration along the path to net zero.”
With the Black Sea region being one of the world’s key arable crop exporting regions, the most obvious potential impact is on an already tight grain and oilseed market balance. The closure of Ukraine’s ports and sanctions on Russia have the potential to further reduce the supply of crops into the world market towards the end of the current marketing year and into the next, while the difficulty in planting and fertilising spring crops in Ukraine will constrain supply in the next marketing year.

“Unsurprisingly, futures markets have seen prices surge beyond already high levels. In London, May delivery contracts have risen by a third since the start of the final week in February, while November 2022 and May 2023 contracts have seen increases of around 20%. In some markets where overall supply is not constrained, things will eventually settle down as businesses adjust supply chains and switch suppliers and logistics. As we witnessed at various stages of the pandemic, this can lead to short-term volatility in pricing and availability.”

Within the Scottish red meat sector, pig producers are most exposed to rising global grain markets. Feed costs had already climbed to 70% of production costs in late-2021, with Defra’s compound feed price report for Q4 2021 indicating a record high, up 12% on the year.

Cattle finishers are also highly exposed to rising feed costs. For example, based on QMS Enterprise Profitability data, to offset a 50% rise in feed costs, cereal-based finishers would need a 42p/kg lift in the price paid for a 382kg dwt -U3 grade young bull; and that is before considering other input cost increases.
“Meanwhile, higher fuel and energy prices will be pushing up the operating costs of processing sites, along with the cost of transport and distribution. There is also a general economic impact to consider as the further spike in oil, gas and food prices filters through into higher prices for goods and services across the economy.”

According to the ONS, energy costs were nearly 25% more expensive than a year earlier in January, while food prices had risen by 4.5%, with limited pass through of increased wheat prices so far.
Meanwhile, in Q4 2021, average weekly earnings growth reported by the ONS had slowed to 4.3% and the Bank of England had already been projecting a squeeze on household purchasing power this year.
“Unsurprisingly, consumer confidence has weakened, with pessimism spreading from concern over the general economic environment to household finances. Data from the ONS and Kantar has already shown that significant price inflation for beef and lamb has been testing the loyalty of consumers and it may lead to some trading down towards cheaper cuts, with implications for carcase balance.”

Looking further field, data from the EU Commission shows that the EU is a significant net exporter of pigmeat to Ukraine and importer of poultry. Due to the war, Mr Macdonald anticipates that it is highly likely that this trade will have ground to a halt, or at least been significantly reduced. However, at the same time, the EU population has risen by 0.4% in two weeks, with increases of 2.2% in Slovakia, 3% in Slovakia and 3.7% in Poland.
“This will have undoubtedly had some impact on overall meat supply and demand, and the types of product required, in these countries.”
It is possible that this has influenced the EU pork market, with week ahead farmgate price quotes rising 30-35p/kg in Germany over the past fortnight, suggesting that the EU pig price could have jumped well above the GB price, having spent the early weeks of the year 20% below it. However, EU December 2021 livestock survey results reported year-on-year reductions of 5-6% in the fattening pig categories and this tightening of supply is likely to have contributed to the rebalancing of market prices.

Unrelated to the crisis, the EU beef market firmed through the second half of 2021 and this has continued into 2022. For example, Irish steer prices rose by 4% in February, while in Germany, R3 young bull prices passed 440p/kg and O3 cows reached 325p/kg in Poland.
Mr Macdonald observes that rising cattle and pig prices in the EU suggest that there will be few cheap alternatives from the EU for traders to take into price negotiations, helping to support prices in the domestic supply chain. This may have already underpinned cow prices at Scottish abattoirs, while farmgate pig prices have edged above their low despite a backlog remaining on farm.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-17 11:22:00 | 2025-07-27 09:26:50 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5362 | Thailand receives the green light for poultry exports to Saudi Arabia | 11 plants are allowed to ship chilled, frozen and processed chicken in the Saudi market. |
Poultry exports from Thailand to Saudi Arabi will be resumed starting next month, according to the Saudi Food and Drug Authority. 11 processing plants have passed the inspection tests and are allowed to ship chilled, frozen and processed chicken in the Saudi market. Five of those units are owned by Charoen Pokphand Foods (CPF) Thailand and executives of the company expressed their hopes to increase export figures in the following months. "Saudi Arabia is a high potential market with a population of more than 35.6 million. It is also a member of the Gulf Cooperation Council, for which food makes up 52.7% of imports", mentioned Prasit Boondoungprasert, director and member of the CpF executive committee, in a statement for Pattaya Mail newspaper. 5363 | CARNEXPO Grill - The first barbecue concept that reunites the Romanian business elite | The third edition of the event will take place on May 5-6 in a new location, Phenicia Blue View in Olimp and adds new culinary shows, announced Eugen Capra, general manager, CARNEXPO Grill. |
CARNEXPO Grill, now in its third edition in 2022, is a unique concept in Romania that will take place on May 5-6 in a new location, Phenicia Blue View in Olimp and will attract the most important specialists in the food industry. beverages, HoReCa and retail, both from Romania and abroad.
More than 3,000 experts are expected to attend the beachfront, in a luxurious location that allows the event to be extended to a much larger area of up to 15,000 square meters.
It is by far the most important gastronomic event in Romania that brings together most professionals in the food industry, HoReCa and retail, in order to develop business and discover new products and market trends. As every year, delegates of foreign experts from the Republic of Moldova, Serbia, Hungary, Belgium and Germany, Italy, Spain, France will attend this event.
Eugen Capra, general manager of CARNEXPO Grill, spoke about the evolution of this project and about the novelties of this year's edition.

How did the CARNEXPO Grill project come to life and how did it perform during the first two editions?

The project was born from the need of producers to promote their range of grilled meat products, and because we have been the organizers of the CARNEXPO exhibition for many years, we kept the line and chose to develop a new barbecue concept for the Romanian market.
I thought of it as a premium outdoor event that combines the business side with the relaxation, so necessary in an industry where a lot of work is done and which constantly needs the development of new concepts and products. Indeed, it is much different from a classic exhibition, where the emphasis is on networking and business matchmaking. We started promoting the event in 2020, through a series of video episodes, in which together with famous Chefs in Romania, such as Chef Orlando Zaharia and Chef Iulian Olaru, we promoted local products from several regions of the country. Through this action, we managed to create a favorable image for Romanian producers, promoting gastronomy and beautiful tourist locations of Romania.

During the first edition, in 2020, we focused on offering our guests from HoReCa and retail interactive culinary shows, in which Chefs showed different techniques for preparing several categories of meat products: pork, poultry, beef, sheep. Chef Orlando Zaharia, Chef Iulian Olaru, Chef Antonio Passarelli, Chef Michael Passarelli, Chef Paul Siserman, Chef Dragos Bercea delighted the over 200 experts and enthusiasts from the basic sectors of the food industry, HoReCa and retail. Also, butcher shows made by Moldovan's specialists revealed the mastery of Romanian butchers and the quality of local products.

In 2021, the project confirmed that it is the most successful gastronomic event in Romania, managing to attract over 1,500 specialists from the meat industry, HoReCa, retail, equipment suppliers and food ingredients. This is practically the moment when we understood that we managed to lay the foundations for the implementation of this barbecue concept around which the Romanian business elite gathers to do business.
The feedback received in 2021 from the participants from HoReCa and retail determined us to expand the event area to this year's edition, especially as the HoReCa operators on the coast, but also from the rest of the country are interested in identifying new suppliers of meat, but also of cheeses, drinks or bakery products. We promote the concept of barbecue, in which meat is the star, but around it we build a complete experience for our specialist guests.

How is this year's event structured, what's new?

This year's edition proposes a much more complex experience, in terms of the new structure of the event, which involves the largest space so far - 15,000 square meters. Remaining true to its main mission, that of promoting local products and Romanian services, CARNEXPO Grill takes place in 2022 in a different area of the country, by the sea, in a 4-star location - Phenicia Blue View Resort in Olympus.
Basically, together with the most important meat producers, we will make the official opening of the 2022 grill season in Romania. At the same time, with the partners from HoReCa and tourism, we will make the official opening of the 2022 summer season, through which we want to encourage tourists from Romania and abroad to come and visit us and taste the new Romanian gastronomy.
At the same time, we present the new event format dedicated to consumers - GrillFest Experience, through which we aim to bring a new grill experience to consumers and to support the food education of Romanians. We will bring with us well-known nutritionists to provide quality information on proper and tasty food, but also on the benefits of sports for maintaining health.
People need to eat simpler and healthier food without feeling pressured to give up certain foods. And the meat industry doesn't have to be put in a bad light. We see that many manufacturers are investing heavily in developing safe and healthy products. Consumers need to find out which combinations work best for them in order to have a balanced diet.
The GrillFest concept involves an area with grill stands, where visitors can learn all this information directly from experts in the field and experience new food combinations.

What shows and contests are scheduled to liven up this year's event?

For the first time in Romania, we organize Top Chef MACELAR, the first competition that aims to select the best master butchers, bringing together teams of professionals who proudly represent the butchers' sector. The competitors will go through several tests, judged by a panel of specialists, in the fight for the great trophy of Chef Butcher of Romania.
In this field, innovation is very important, the category of semi-prepared, ready-to-cook, ready-to-eat must be developed, but also the styles of cuts of meat on different categories, such as pork, chicken, beef or sheep. Equally important is the positioning and presentation of these products. Romanians like already established products (small, sausages, burgers), but research is needed to create new products, in line with popular taste trends globally.
Top Chef MACELAR is a project very dear to our soul, which promotes the essence of this industry, which we have been serving for over 15 years and we want it to become a traditional competition in Romania.
Without such a competition or without the School of Butchers - another important project that we will launch, there is a risk that this profession will not have a future in Romania. We have young people who are really passionate about this profession, who do not have the opportunity to develop in our country, which is why the Butchery School that we will launch together with the Agrofood Association and Pallazzo Italia needs the full support of the Romanian meat industry.

What are the values of this new competition?

Much more than a simple competition, Top Chef MACELAR is about the art of learning, sharing and innovating through new meat processing techniques designed to contribute to the specialized development of the meat industry. The concept of Top Chef MACELAR is intended to create an environment in which Romanian butchers try to overcome the current practice of the industry in its various stages of production: general preparation, meat cutting, exhibition and creative use of beef, pork, sheep and poultry products. . Through this competition, we want to build a professional community that will generate business opportunities and supports trade to benefit from an infusion of creativity and innovation.
In this way, we invite all partners and specialists in the meat industry to join this bold project that brings clear solutions for the very existence of the butcher business in Romania.
The organization of the competition is only the first step we take in collaboration with the Agrofood Association and Pallazzo Italia, a partnership that aims to establish the first National Butchery Team of Romania and the Professional School of Butchers, social-educational projects for training and education of future masters butcher. We have already started the research stages with specialists from Italy, in order to develop new types of cuts and different products, which will bring benefits to the meat industry.
The participation of the Romanian butchers' team in all international competitions will be done through the specialized magazine EuroMeatNews.com, another project of ours that grows from year to year and which at this moment is the most important publication on the meat sector. globally.

What will the gastronomy area look like this year?

For us, the gastronomy area is very important, and through the partnerships, we have with ANBCT, HORA, RESTO Constanta, Escoffier Romania, Associazione Cuochi Italieni, we will organize competitions and culinary demonstrations with the most important Chefs in Romania, in order to refine and modernize the Romanian gastronomy. The national teams of Romanian chefs will be with us, internationally recognized pastry chefs and bakers will set the trend in Romanian cuisine.
Mainly, we aim for Romanian products to be taken over by these culinary masters and later, through the partners from HoReCa and retail, to reach the tables of consumers in the country and abroad.

Will CARNEXPO Grill reach the borders of the country again?

We are living through difficult times for all mankind, and our thoughts are certainly on understanding and peace. CARNEXPO Grill was very well received last year by the authorities and specialists of the Republic of Moldova and we have high hopes that we will organize it again in 2022. We also presented the concept of several European associations in the meat industry and we plan a special edition at Brussels, in the autumn, which will include the lobby we want to make at the European level.

What is the message you send to the producers? Why should I attend CARNEXPO Grill?

Our message is one of unity, of developing partnerships between specialists and implicitly of growing the Romanian economy. The motto of this year's edition is the Great Unification (of Romania) and we expect all the industries involved in this gastronomic show to find the best collaboration solutions to be able to provide consumers with quality products at competitive prices.
We are a team specialized in marketing and event organization, with over 15 years of experience, which has confirmed over time, through all the projects it carries out, that it wants to contribute to the development of the agri-food sector in Romania.
Therefore, the companies from the Romanian industry are invited to support as much as possible this project, which is an excellent business platform in the development of local businesses. Only through such projects can we create a favorable picture for the Romanian industry.
The meat industry suffers from a lack of communication and promotion of meat products. That's why, at CARNEXPO Grill, we have integrated a nutrition and sports area, and together with the partners from HoReCa, we aim to educate consumers, to eat as healthy as possible and to do sports. Only with the involvement of food industry operators will we be able to raise the level of performance of the sector, in order to continue to provide safe and quality food.

About this year's event

15,000 sqm will host 8 dedicated areas:

MEAT EXPO The main exhibition area / area of the event in which the participants have the opportunity to exhibit their meat products and preparations and to personalize their stand according to the promotional campaigns they have in progress

- TECH Area / technology, equipment, consumables and software services, all in the same place, an area dedicated exclusively to this segment essential for the modern production of meat and meat products, but also for the technological needs of retail and HoReCa

- WINE & CHEESE Area / area dedicated to producers of wines, beer and other alcoholic beverages and traditional partners in the cheese area

- HORECA Area / HoReCa segment receives at this edition, its own area where participants can promote their products and services for the HoReCa segment

- SWEETS & SNACKS Area / from bakery, pastry and confectionery, to ice cream or sandwiches, the sweets & snacks area comes naturally in addition to the grill experience

- BUSINESS Lounge / area dedicated to business meetings and networking, where participants can rent booths that they can optimize and customize according to preferences

- GASTRO Area / a tradition of the event already, is also hosted in an area specially dedicated to culinary shows, which this year will host the first national butcher contest: TOP CHEF BUTCHER, simultaneously with a traditional gastronomy contest

- BEACH LOUNGE / relaxation area, a journey dedicated to culinary art, fine drinks, music and entertainment concepts and events

| 1 | Events | 2022-03-18 09:09:08 | 2025-07-27 05:59:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5364 | Live pig prices are jumping in Germany | In just one week, the price has increased by €0.25/kg and stands now at €1.75. |
Inside the EU, large increases in the prices of pigs are visible, with Germany reaching a record of €0.25/kg added in just one week, according to VEZG quotations. In the last few weeks, €0.55 has been added to the quotation of fattening pigs. Rising livestock prices are the result of the lifting of restrictions after the Covid-19 pandemic, seasonal preparations for the barbecue season and a weaker supply of livestock resulting from the reduction in the number of pigs and production after many months of losses by farmers. Unfortunately, increases in livestock prices go hand in hand with increases in feed, energy and fuel prices and uncertainty about the further impact of the war in Ukraine on the European economy.
Not at a similar pace but going upwards, increases in prices of pigs compared to last week were reported in Belgium (€0.21), the Netherlands and Austria (€0.18), Spain (€0.08), France (€0.06) and Denmark (€0.03). Discussions about a limit in pork exports inside the EU have started in Germany, Spain and Belgium as the governments are taking into consideration the food security for the following months.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-03-18 12:42:37 | 2025-07-27 06:48:13 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5365 | Italy counts 66 cases of ASF | All have been reported in the wild boar population in the regions of Piedmont and Liguria. |
After two months since its first ASF outbreak, Italy has now 66 cases reported in two regions: Piedmont (38 cases) and Liguria (28 cases). So far, the disease has been found only in the wild boar population but new measures are prepared by the local authorities to stop the virus from spreading.
The President of the Piedmont Region, Alberto Cirio, approved this week an order with new urgent and specific measures to depopulate wild boar populations, monitor the presence of ASF and guarantee biosecurity in the infected zone, the active surveillance zone, the proximal free zone and the distal free zone.

As an exception to the legislation, wild boar selection hunting can also be carried out at night, provided that night vision equipment is used to facilitate the selection of identified animals.
The measure is valid throughout the region and expires on June 30. In the infected zone and in the active surveillance zone, the application of the measures is a priority and urgent and the depopulation measures must be carried out immediately and with the greatest possible intensity in the three months following the entry into force of the order.
Similar measures have been adopted in the past by Poland, Romania and Germany and the main result was a migration of wild boars to regions where the herds felt safe. Italy and North Macedonia were the latest European countries to report ASF outbreaks but the disease is also present in Poland, Romania, Serbia, Bulgaria, Greece, Hungary, Slovakia, Germany, the Baltic states, Ukraine, Belarus and Russia (see map below). 5366 | UK secures market access to Chile for pork sector | The UK pig industry will be able to export products to Chile for the first time in a new deal worth an estimated £20 million over the first five years, according to AHDB. |
Authorities in the South American country have today (17 March 2022) given the green light to 27 pork processing sites from across all four devolved nations to start commercial exports.

The UK has an association agreement with Chile, which largely maintains prior preferential trading arrangements and rules of origin. This means that UK pork exporters can benefit from the import tariff under the Most Favoured Nation tariff of 6%, subject to certain conditions.

Today’s announcement comes in a year of successful export wins, with Mexico opening its doors to British pork last September, in a deal estimated to be worth £50 million over the first five years of trade and sheep meat to the US, worth around £37 million.

AHDB International Market Development Director Dr Phil Hadley said: “This announcement is the latest in a run of successful market access wins for the red meat sector and is another example of the high regard and reputation our products command overseas. Opening the market for UK pork to Chile, following gaining access to Mexico, will provide our pig farmers and processors with another valuable market to sell their products, providing a much-needed boost for the sector.”

Farming Minister Victoria Prentis said: “The pig sector is facing a range of challenges and we must make use of all levers available to us. That includes new export markets, and it is great to see the Chilean market open its doors to our pig producers. This will be worth £20m over the next five years and will build on other measures we have introduced to bolster the industry.”

Pork production in Chile remained stagnant last year, with imports rising year after year for the last decade due to increased demand. As the second most consumed meat in Chile, consumption is expected to increase steadily, reaching an estimated 26.8 kg per capita by 2029.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-03-18 13:20:22 | 2025-07-27 05:08:19 | Details Edit Delete |
