4363  Spanish white pork sector: Animal Welfare and Food Safety at the service of the consumer    <p>Every day, consumers show more concern and demand more information about the food they consume, taking for granted that the products at their disposal have quality and do not represent a risk to their own health.<br />Through the improvement of animal welfare, the Spanish white pork sector has performed many advances in terms of biosecurity, animal health, handling, feeding, among others. All these values are supported and pursued by the &ldquo;Welfare Commitment Certified&rdquo; seal, which are ultimately translated into providing, guaranteeing and certifying to consumers a higher food safety.</p> <p><img src="/files/pictures/article/iaws-logo-eng-traz.jpg?1608196873596" alt="iaws-logo-eng-traz" height="100%" /></p> <p><br />This seal represents the compliance of the operators with the Animal Welfare and Biosecurity Technical Regulation INTERPORC ANIMAL WELFARE SPAIN (IAWS), developed by professionals of the sector from production and industry, endorsed and validated by a Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare, audited by certification bodies authorized and independent, and recognized by animal rights organizations.<br />Numerous scientific studies positively relate greater care and protection of animals, meeting their nutritional necessities, better sanitary conditions on farms, satisfying the natural behavior of the species and optimal housing and environmental conditions with higher product quality. All of them are the basic pillars on which the IAWS animal welfare certification is based.<br />Each and every one of the operators with farms and embraced on the certification, must be adhered to the antibiotics reduction program of the National Plan against Antibiotic Resistance (PRAN). The aim is to raise awareness about the responsible use, reduction and resistance of antibiotics on farms as well as promoting good hygiene practices and other measures which allow to prevent infectious diseases on farms and, consequently, reduce antibiotic use. This way, we ensure to consumers that certified operators carry out a responsible antibiotic use and the product is safe without the presence of antibiotic residues. <br />In addition,slaughterhouses and food industries that wish to achieve the certificate,it is mandatoryas a prerequisiteto obtain one of the most recognized international certifications in food safety (IFS, BRC or FSSC22000). 1056  Spanish Thenaisie Provote was purchased by Scandia Food  With this move, the Romanian canning group enters new markets in Europe and Americas.  <p>Romania based Scandia Food has acquired the Spanish company Thenaisie Provote, specialized in canned fish and seafood, for an undisclosed sum.<br />The negotiations have started since the late 2016 and Scandia Food had to contract a credit bank of EUR11.2 million in order to restore the patrimonial balance of Thenaisie Provote with a capital increase of EUR2.85 million and meet the payment plan agreed between both sides.<br />In November 2017, Scandia Food has established a Spanish subsidiary, Scandia Food Spain, in order to complete the deal, but, as both companies have indicated in a press release, Thenaisie Provote will keep its identity, established brands and current organization, informs the Spanish magazine Alimarket.<br />In 2017, Thenaisie Provote reported a turnover of EUR 29.8 million, up by 19.6% from the previous year. The total production stood at around 5.500 tons from wich more than 15% was exported to countries such as Portugal, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, Norway, Croatia, Luxembourg, Venezuela, Colombia, the United States, Costa Rica and Puerto Rico.<br />With the latest acquisition, Scandia Food has ensured an entry into this markets and it could expand the business beyond.<br />Thenaisie Provote has a portfolio of brands recognized internationally such as Grandes Hoteles, Pombinas, Tapas and Fisterra. 2799    Family owned supermarket chain Mercadona is to change its image in the next five years with massive investment and enter the Portuguese market.  <p>After pouring &euro;1.5 billion in its transformation process last year, Spanish supermarket chain Mercadona is announcing a total investment of &euro;10 billion in the next five years. The budget is meant to cover the renovation of its stores, the start-up of new services such as Ready to Eat or Mercadona Online, the commitment to Frescos Global, the automation of the logistics blocks, the digital transformation of the company, and the expansion in Portugal.<br />In a statement, the company explained that its "Total Quality Model"&nbsp; contemplates diverse strategies and objectives to satisfy and create shared value for the five components of the company: "the boss" (client), the worker, the supplier, the society and the capital.<br />In 2018, Mercadona made purchases in Spain worth &euro;18.6 billion, a figure that represents more than 85% of the total purchases made. 7987  Spanish Serrano ham continues to grow in the German market  Spanish Serrano ham is an iconic product that has crossed borders, earning a prominent place in international gastronomy. In the German market, this product has established itself as one of the most valued, demonstrating an increasing relevance at a cultural, social and economic level.  <p style="font-weight: 400;">During the first half of 2024, German consumers' preference for the quality of Spanish Serrano ham has maintained a solid demand, strengthening its position in the country's food supply and consolidating itself as a highly appreciated product with a representative flavour of Spanish cuisine.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">In 2024, the German market established itself as the second largest export destination for Spanish cured ham, representing 19.15% in volume and 17.46% in value. This highlights Germany as a country where the culture of Serrano ham has taken hold, being one of the favourites of local consumers.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Over the years, the German consumer has come to appreciate the unique tradition and flavour of Serrano ham, which has led Spanish export companies to fine-tune their offering to meet the German market's expectations of quality and authenticity.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">As &Aacute;lvaro D&iacute;az de Lia&ntilde;o, Marketing and Promotion Director of the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE), points out&nbsp;, "the German consumer's confidence in Serrano ham is a reflection of our commitment to quality and tradition, which motivates us to continue offering the best of our cuisine in a highly demanding market".</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Although the German market has remained strong in terms of value, 2024 has been a year of adjustments in terms of volume. Exports to Germany recorded a 7.52% drop in the volume of Serrano ham sold, a decrease that contrasts with an increase in the average price of the product of 18.36%.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">This means that, even though fewer tons of Serrano ham were exported, German consumers were willing to pay a higher price, resulting in an increase in the total export value of 9.46%. In fact, the CJSE has joined forces with&nbsp;Spanischer Schinken&nbsp;to collaborate in the promotion of Spanish Serrano ham in Germany, with a website where you can buy Spanish Serrano ham, lomo, chorizo, salchich&oacute;n, tapas, cheeses, etc.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Within the German market, the bone-in ham format suffered a notable decrease in volume, falling by 38.94% compared to the same period last year. However, this trend was partly offset by a 33.98% increase in bone-in shoulder exports, which shows that the market is still looking for variety and adaptability in Serrano ham products.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The boneless format, on the other hand, remains the preferred format, both in Germany and in other markets. Although it registered a slight fall of 4.93% in volume, the increase of 12.8% in value reflects that German consumers are willing to invest in products that combine convenience and quality. This format, being easier to handle and consume, represents an ideal option for the modern lifestyle, where convenience and authenticity are key factors in the purchasing decision.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">As the German market continues to value quality products, Spanish Serrano ham has a promising future in Germany. 5501  Spanish retail triggers salmonella alert  Salmonella was found in minced poultry meat products marketed by Lidl.  <p>The Autonomous Community of Aragon, through the Coordinated System for the Rapid Exchange of Information (SCIRI), has informed AESAN of the presence of salmonellosis in minced poultry marketed in Lidl supermarkets, for which reason the withdrawal of affected products from marketing channels.<br />The product in question, sold in a 500-g plastic tray in the refrigerated area, is labeled Burguer Meat de Pollo-Turkey and its batch number is 3369, with an expiration date of 06/03/22. 4830  Spanish region to limit animal farms number for 4 more years  A better, efficent way in managing manure is requested from the current establishments.  <p>Local authorities in Catalonia have issued a Decree Law by which it will limit for four more years the possibility of expanding and installing new animal farms in the 68 municipalities which already have a large number of units and where the water is contaminated by nitrates from slurry.<br />Initially, the law was passed in July 2019 and was planned for two years. However, poor result obtained in the last couple of years have convince the authorities to extend the limitation for 4 more years.<br />The measure is the result of a process of dialogue with the livestock sector, which is committed to reversing the current situation. The Department of Climate Action, Food and Rural Agenda pursues the objective of avoiding the surplus of slurry. In other words, that existing farms can manage manure in a more efficient way and adopt treatment systems and value these natural fertilizers without increasing the number of animals that are raised in these areas.<br />In Catalonia, there are approximately 8 million pigs, 700,000 cattle and 38 million birds that each year generate about 17 million tons of slurry and 4.4 million tons of manure and chicken manure, according to Carnica magazine.<br />105 farms have their own treatment systems which means the management of 34% of the surplus slurry. Besides, 50% of the surpluses are treated by companies specialized in waste. 3523  Spanish processor enters alliance with British producer  Costa Food Group signs agreement Cranswick to distribute pork and sausage products in the United Kingdom.  <p>Costa Food Group seeks to increase its market share in the UK by signing a partnership with British food producer Caswick to distribute Spanish pork and sausages in Britain. Uk's meat market generates about &euro;333 million per year for the EU companies, of which Spanish charcuterie products account for about 30%, according to <a href="https://carnica.cdecomunicacion.es/noticias/35925/costa-food-group-se-alia-con-cranswick-y-se-lanza-a-por-el-mercado-del-reino-unido?utm_source=newsletter&amp;utm_medium=email&amp;utm_campaign=20200108-carnica">CDeComunicacion</a> magazine.<br />Cranswick invoices more than GBP 1 billion per year (&euro;1,169 million) which makes it one of the main companies in the UK meat industry. It has recently opened modern meat processing facilities in Bury. It is a company that practices a transparency policy in the supply chain, looking for integrated solutions from the farm to the table with total traceability.</p> <p>Costa Food Group invoices 900 million euros annually and in recent years has carried out major acquisitions such as Casademont, La Nuncia and Villar. 4385  Spanish poultry sector show signs of consolidation    <p>Grupo Uvesa has offered nearly 7.8 million euros for the production unit of the Cooperativa Av&iacute;cola de Burgos located in Monte de la Abadesa (Burgos). 4123  Spanish poultry producer hit by COVID-19 infections  50 new cases have been confirmed at the Avicola de Galicia (Avigal) production plant in Cambados.  <p>Production operations in the Avicola de Galicia production plant in Cambados have been reduced at 40% to ensure distancing measures among workers, after 50 new cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed as positive. This pushes the total number of infected employees to 96, most of them been reported as being asymptomatic or present very mild cases.<br />The company highlights that the health of professionals has always been prioritized over commercial operations, and the drastic reduction in production shows this. Another shutdown was in mid-summer when the plant was closed for a couple of weeks, until August 17, for disinfection. Another plant owned by the company in Campano is 100% operational, with no signs of infection so far. 5400  Spanish poultry prices up 12%, breeders not content with it  The association that defends farmers is accusing large integrated companies to increase their margins without transferring some of the profit to broiler breeders.  <p>Chicken meat prices have increased by 12% in Spain in the last month, reaching &euro;3.19 at the end of March. However, the increase supported by Spanish consumers is not transferred from retailers and processors down/chain to poultry farmers, according to the Consortium of Farmers and Ranchers Organizations (COAG). According to executives from COAG, the increase in poultry prices does not bring any benefits for farmers. "The situation of poultry producers is critical given the brutal increase in production costs, triggered by the vertiginous increase in the prices of diesel (+96%), energy (electricity and gas +150%), plastics (+50% ), water (+30%), fertilizers (+150%), during the last year. The value chain of the poultry sector cannot be based on a loss-making production for farmers who already had narrow profit margins in which small and medium-sized farms normally moved," warns Jaume Bernis, head of the poultry sector of the COAG, quoted by Carnica. 7175  Spanish Pork: Much more than meat  Far from being a sector stuck in the past, the Spanish pig sector is a modern, technologically advanced and highly digitalized sector. A world leader and an international example of good practices and excellence in production.  <p><span lang="DE">A status that it has achieved by working firmly with very solid principles such as its respect for the environment, its determined commitment to animal welfare, the constant search to improve the nutritional quality of its products and the opportunities it provides to social groups such as women or young people who undertake family livestock projects.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">One of the most positive aspects of these results is that they have come after the pork sector's commitment to becoming a modern sector that makes large investments to quickly implement any technological innovation, mainly those that contribute to improving environmental variables.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Thanks to these investments, although between 1990 and 2021 the pig census grew by 192% and meat production by 160%, the sector's GHG emissions only grew by 9.5%.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">This is possible because emissions have gone from 409 kilos of Co2 per head to only 233.34.&nbsp;Almost half.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The enormous effort deployed to minimize its environmental impact is also evident if we take into account that its emissions are 25.5% of the total emissions from livestock farming, while the specific weight of pig production represents 40.7% of the Final Livestock Production of Spain.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">This result is the sum of significant decreases in all variables, such as ammonia emissions (-35% in the last 30 years), water consumption for each kilo of meat produced (-30% in the last 30 years), use of antibiotics (-47% between 2020 and 2022), energy footprint, fertilizers...</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">However, the challenge set is to achieve 'Net Zero Emissions' in the 2030/2050 horizon.&nbsp;An increasingly closer goal.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">On the other hand, we cannot forget a hallmark of swine professionals, animal welfare.&nbsp;Pig farmers have always taken care of their animals.&nbsp;Not only because they live with them, but because their own future and that of their families depends on their well-being.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In recent years, the best proof of this desire to protect and guarantee animal welfare has been the creation in 2019 of the INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain (IAWS) certification and Technical Regulations.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">This certification is translated to the consumer into the voluntary seal 'B+ Animal Welfare Commitment', which endorses good practices in animal welfare, food safety, animal management, health and biosafety, and not only includes Spanish and European regulations, but also It's even more demanding.&nbsp;This has placed Spain at the global forefront in animal welfare in pigs.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Consumers now have animal welfare certified meat within their reach since large retailers have supported and accepted the seal, and 163 operators and more than 7,700 farms have been certified, exceeding the audits carried out by specialized companies external to the sector.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Pork products are the main source of meat protein for Spanish consumers (more than 42%).&nbsp;A fact that is especially relevant given the high quality of this meat, which provides proteins of high biological value, essential amino acids, minerals (phosphorus, zinc, selenium and iron), or vitamins as important as those of group B. 7374  Spanish Pork, ready to show its potential at SIAL China  The Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC) is ready to play a major role at SIAL Shangai, which will be held in Shanghai from 28 to 30 May. This event is an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate the leadership of the Spanish pork sector in the international market, especially in China, a strategic market for Spanish pork where it has established itself as the leading supplier.  <p>In 2023, Spain accounted for 20.95% of all Chinese purchases of pork products, surpassing other exporting countries. Fresh meat is the main product, with 294,885 tonnes exported for a value of 682.1 million euros, followed by offals and ham.</p> <p>In order to consolidate this leading position, INTERPORC will gather in a 810 sqm pavilion 20 of the most important Spanish pork companies, which in total have a production capacity of more than three million tonnes per year, an export value of more than 3.8 billion euros and a total turnover of more than 11.5 billion euros.</p> <p>In addition, the Spanish Interprofessional will organise several commercial and institutional meetings. Among these, the most notable will be the visit to the stand of the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, for what it implies in terms of support for the sector from the authorities. The quality of the visits received, together with the consolidation of the commercial relationships reaffirms Spain as a leader in that market and one of the great international powers in the sector.  <p><span lang="DE">A good endorsement of this strength has been the support obtained with the visit to the Interprofessional of the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food. 2704  Spanish pork sector is focusing on Mexico and Japan  In the last 10 years, pork exports to these markets have grown considerably, according to Interporc.  <p>Interporc, the Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork, intends to benefit from the new Trade Agreements signed between the EU and Mexico and Japan. Pork exports to these countries have grown considerably in the last decade and Spain wants to consolidate its presence in these markets.<br />Last year, Spanish pork exports to Japan have reached 117,627 tonnes and a 9.6% market share. The value exceeded 440 million euros, 9.2% of the total value of Japanese imports, which places Spain as the fourth supplier of pork to the Japanese market. Since 2008, the growth in Spanish pork exports to Japan is of almost 600%, from 17,323 tonnes to 117,617 tonnes, according to data collected by Interporc.<br />Also, Mexico is another market where Spanish pork exports have increased by 400% in volume in the last years. Mexico pork industry covers only 60% of the domestic consumption, annual imports reaching 1.1 million tonnes of pork. Spanish exports of pork to Mexico exceeded 2,500 tons last year and 22.4 million euros, positioning the European country as the fourth largest supplier, after the United States, Canada and Chile. In 2008, Spain pork exports to Mexico stood at 610 tonnes.<br />Spain is taken as an example by the British pork industry who is trying to create a similar strategy for its exports. In 2018, Spain exported 1.7 million tonnes of pig meat (product weight), 1.5% more than a year earlier. "Pigmeat exports to the EU fell by 2%, to 1.1 million tonnes in 2018. Exports to non-EU destinations grew by 7.5% to 600,000 tonnes. Spanish exporters have been very successful in growing their extra EU export volumes in recent years, underpinning the expansion in national production. Non-EU exports accounted for 20% of total export volumes five years ago, but in 2018 they contributed over a third. 1015  Spanish pork products are compliant with food safety system in the US  An audit conducted by FSIS declared the Spanish pork inspection equivalent to the one existing on the American market.  <p>The most recent onsite audit Spain&rsquo;s inspection system for raw and processed pork product made by USDA found that the European country is following the same rules on the food safety field like those established in the US.<br />"The purpose of the audit was to determine whether Spain&rsquo;s food safety system governing slaughtered and processed meat remains equivalent to that of the United States, with the ability to export products that are safe, wholesome, unadulterated, and correctly labeled and packaged", said the report released by USDA&rsquo;s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).<br />The American authorities have conducted different controls on the Spanish pork products imported between 2014 and 2017 and visits to five meat processing plants, two meat slaughter facilities and a public health laboratory located in Spain. Still, some adjustments have to be made by the Spanish authorities to respond the requirements of the US counterpart. "Spain did not adequately verify that establishments met government sanitation requirements that ensure ventilation is sufficient to control condensation to protect the product and prevent the creation of unsanitary conditions,&rdquo; said the FSIS report, quoted by <a href="https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2018/03/new-audit-finds-spains-pork-inspections-equivalent-to-u-s/#.Wrt9TX9DO00">Food Safety News</a>.<br />At this time, Spain, who is also the largest pork producer in the EU, exports raw and further processed pork products to the United States.
