4376 | 5 consecutive months of growth for China's pig inventory | Pork prices in the Chinese market have hit the lowest level for 2020. |
China has increased its national swine herd for the fifth consecutive month this year and pork prices are declining bit by bit. At the beginning of the week, the country's Ministry of Agriculture announced an increase of 29.8% in November compared to the same period last year while breeding stock rose 31.2% in the year. Pork prices dropped to 45.8 yuan ($ 6.99) per kilo, the lowest level seen so far in 2020, thanks to an increase in the supply of meat on the market, the ministry added.
That may not be good news for the main suppliers of pork in the Chinese market such as the US, Brazil, Spain or Canada. In fact, several analysts have already signalled that new markets must be found soon to avoid turbulent conditions in the global meat market. Earlier this year, Beijing officials have announced that China is looking to achieve 95% self-sufficiency in pork over the next two years.
| 1 | Market | 2020-12-22 12:59:17 | 2025-08-06 10:02:37 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4102 | 5 new cases of ASF confirmed in Germany | The disease has spread among feral pigs and wild boar population in the Oder-Spree district. |
Five new cases of African swine fever have been confirmed in Germany, according to the Ministry for Consumer Protection in Potsdam. The announcement was made after the State Laboratory Berlin-Brandenburg has tested the samples collected from the carcasses found in the woods in the Oder-Spree district, an area already designated as endangered due to the first case of ASF confirmed last week.
Four feral pigs and one wild boar were found dead in the last few days. The animals were discovered only about 20 km away from the site of the first swine fever case. The ASF outbreak in Germany tends to reshape the European pork market due to the impact created by bans on German pork exports in the Asia-Pacific markets and beyond. This week, pig meat prices in Germany have dropped by 13%. A dive in pork prices is expected to happen soon in the EU as Germany will flood the market with volumes that can not be shipped to third countries. Luckily, the demand for pork in Poland, Romania and Bulgaria is still high as those countries are already affected by ongoing ASF outbreaks.
On the other hand, Belgium is expected to regain access in third-markets after the country has managed to contain the disease from spreading to domestic pigs and industrial farms and no new cases of ASF have been reported in wild boars since last October.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-09-17 10:59:26 | 2025-08-06 08:48:23 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4409 | 5 new trends to reshape grocery retail in Asia | Accessibility, online sales, health, digitisation and omnichannel evolution of stores are offering a new perspective for the sector, according to the latest report from IGD Asia. |
Consumers have adopted new ways of purchasing their grocery during 2020 due to restrictive measures imposed in front of the pandemic wave in Asia and these trends are to reshape further the grocery retail industry, says the latest report from IGD Asia.

Accessible retailing

The global pandemic has made businesses come up with new solutions to make their operations, products and services more accessible. These new solutions have provided new growth opportunities for retailers and therefore we expect this trend to continue, with an acceleration post-pandemic.

A great example of this is retailers teaming up with third-party delivery providers. Over the past year, there were loads of retailers partner with foodservice delivery businesses to make their offers more accessible and offer a new solution for 'impulse ecommerce'. Foodpanda has recently added 2,500 7-Eleven stores to its app across Singapore, Malaysia, Taiwan and the Philippines. An average of 1,000 SKUs will be shoppable with delivery times averaging 20 minutes. The agreement follows a six-month trial which saw orders via the Foodpanda app grow 50% month-on-month.

Fast-tracking online grocery

"We saw a surge in demand for online grocery retailing in 2020 across Asia, with more people than ever both shopping online and the channel growing in importance. Retailers with existing operations have rapidly developed their services, while many retailers who were previously not online have launched services in the space of just a few months.

We expect online grocery retailing to remain elevated post-pandemic, with retailers expanding their services, strengthening their capabilities, and boosting capacity. For example, FairPrice in Singapore has upskilled its in-store pickers, plus is offering two-hour delivery, via its Shop Fast, Shop Fresh service. Delivery is free on orders over SGD79 and prices are exactly the same as you would get in-store," explained Nick Miles, Head of Insight - Asia Pacific.

Elevation of health wellness and hygiene

Health and wellness has been a growing trend for a number of years, however, the importance of a healthy diet, personal well-being and hygiene, have become even more important in 2020. This provides a great opportunity for retailers and suppliers to differentiate themselves and supercharge relevancy of their offers. The most advanced businesses will elevate their attention on this going forward, providing affordable choice, new solutions and advice for shoppers.

Digitisation of the path to purchase

The perfect storm of mobile first internet access, a young tech-savvy population, highly advanced social platforms, plus high social media penetration means Asia is world-leading in the digitisation of the path to purchase. Smartphones are playing an increasing role in the shopping experience with digital communication and solutions that deliver new levels of personalisation.

Retailers and suppliers will continue to enhance their capabilities and using new techniques to influence purchasing behaviours both in-store and online. Dairy Farm in Hong Kong has brought its 10 brands and 2,000+ shops together under its new digital first rewards club. With daily content, personalised offers and lots of other features, it was the most downloaded free app in Hong Kong in 2020, 2.8m downloads in just four months.

Omnichannel evolution of stores

Even with the growth of ecommerce over the coming years, stores will remain vitally important, but they will need to evolve to survive. Stores have a vital role to play in supporting the growth of ecommerce, while ecommerce can also help support store operations. Shoppers will increasingly not differentiate between the two channels and therefore the challenge for retailers and suppliers is to provide a seamless experience across both. China is leading the way, while across Asia we expect more retailers to adapt and flex stores to achieve seamless 020 operations.
| 1 | Retail | 2021-01-12 09:53:28 | 2025-08-06 12:48:34 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4509 | 5.1% increase in Spanish meat production in 2020 | The slaughtering figures have dropped for most of the species except for pigs. |
Spain reports a 5.1% increase in meat output for last year, despite the fact that slaughtering figures have dropped for almost all species with one exception: pigs. Increased demand for pork in China, the main market for Spanish pig meat, has raised the slaughtering figures by 6.57%, to 56,461,218 head, according to official data released by the Ministry of Agriculture (MAPA). Also, the weight was higher than usual favoring a rise of 8.24% in pig meat production (5,023,534 tonnes).
Overall, Spanish meat production during 2020 totaled 7,603,932 tons due to a rise in pig meat and poultry output (0.74%). Nevertheless, the number of birds slaughtered has dropped by 2.04% to 800,615, 356. For the rest of the species the were slight decreases in both slaughtering figures and meat output:
- cattle 2,444,480 head (-2.64%) , with a total production of 677,295 tonnes (-2.57%).
- goat 1,202,083 head (-7.77%), totaling 10,160 tonnes (-2.50%).
- sheep 9,456,150 head (- 6.00%), totaling 114,305 tonnes (- 5.30%).
- rabbit 40,743,739 head (-0.64%), with a total production of 51,229 tonnes (-1.75%).
The difference is represented by the horse meat production, 9,530 tonnes (-1.05%) from 36,949 animals. Basically, the numbers are closed to the figures reported in 2018, when Spain had an increase in meat production of 5.51%.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-03-02 08:43:04 | 2025-08-06 17:34:55 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5255 | 5% decline in China's pork imports for 2022 | "Government support measures for Chinese pork producers are expected to increase the number of livestock and reduce imports this year" - IndexBox report. |
China, the world’s largest pork market, imported 2.8M tonnes of pig meat worth $8B from January to August 2021, a recent report from IndexBox states. Compared to the same period a year earlier, the volume of imports remained nearly unchanged, while in value terms purchases grew by 3%. However, data offered by the General Administration of Customs show a downward trend for meat imports in the second half of 2021.
Pork supplies from the US dropped by 36% to 340K tonnes, while Spain and Brazil sharply boosted their exports to China. Against the same period of 2020, purchases from Spain increased by 70% to 900K tonnes or by 76% to $2.6B in value terms. Supplies from Brazil rose by 25% to 360K tonnes or 21% to $1.2B in monetary terms.
In 2022, China’s pork imports are projected to drop by 5% due to rising domestic pork production. The Chinese government is expected to support large pig farming companies to keep expanding their herds.

China’s Pork Imports Statistics - 2020

Pork imports into China soared from 2.0M tonnes in 2019 to 4.3M tonnes in 2020. In value terms, purchases skyrocketed from $4.5B to $11.9B. Spain (934K tonnes), the US (696K tonnes), and Brazil (481K tonnes) were the leading suppliers of pork to China, with a combined 49% share of total imports. In value terms, the largest pork suppliers to China were Spain ($2.7B), the US ($1.6B) and Brazil ($1.6B), with a combined 49% share of total supplies.
In 2020, the US recorded the highest shipment growth rate among the leading suppliers. Pork imports from America rose threefold in value terms. The average pork import price amounted to $2,761 per tonne in 2020, jumping by 22% against the previous year. Average prices varied somewhat amongst the major supplying countries. In 2020, the highest prices were recorded for prices from Brazil ($3,254 per tonne) and Denmark ($3,009 per tonne), while the costs for the US ($2,351 per tonne) and Canada ($2,369 per tonne) were amongst the lowest.

100% in self-sufficiency predicted

However, according to Jacek Strzelecki, a Polish market analyst, in 2022 China may reach 100% in pig meat self-sufficiency. "Pork production in China:
- 2021 96% self-sufficiency; 2022 100% self-sufficiency; 2023 102% self-sufficiency. Pig herd in China - forecast:
- 2022 - 504 million units;
- 2023 - 554 million units," said Mr. Strzelecki in a tweet. The effect will be felt by major players such as Brazil, Spain, the US and Canada.
| 1 | Market | 2022-01-27 10:12:03 | 2025-08-06 17:35:25 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4370 | 5% drop in turnover for the Italian packaging machinery industry |
The seemingly unstoppable growth of the Italian packaging machinery industry has suffered a temporary setback. According to the preliminary figures compiled by MECS-Ucima (Italian Packaging Machinery Manufacturers’ Association) Research Department, the sector will register an overall turnover of €7,639 million in 2020, 5% down on the result recorded in 2019.
This figure is hardly a surprise given the severe difficulties faced by the industry this year amid a combination of the Covid-19 pandemic and a global economic slowdown. Although several key client sectors posted strong performances (including Food & Beverage, Pharma and Home & Personal Care), these only mitigated the industry-wide year-end losses.

Specifically, the Italian packaging machinery manufacturers’ domestic sales fell by 6.8% to €1,574 million, while exports, which have always been the main source of sales for the sector, experienced a 4.5% year-on-year loss to €6,065 million.
“We were expecting this slowdown, but our sector remains robust and is looking to the future with confidence,” commented Ucima’s chairman Matteo Gentili. “We were well prepared for the Covid emergency and have demonstrated our strength in the face of adversity. Our Industry 4.0 technologies allowing for remote plant control, testing and service have enabled us to keep in close touch with our customers around the world. We are cautiously optimistic about a return to growth in 2021, while being aware of the strength of our competitors and the uncertainty that the pandemic is continuing to cause in many markets.”

The launch of the National Industry 4.0 Plan involving an investment of around €24 billion by the Italian government will play an important role in promoting investment in new technologies. Ucima welcomes this measure, which will boost and speed up tax relief for companies.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-12-21 05:13:28 | 2025-08-06 14:52:10 | Details Edit Delete | |||
4073 | 50% less wood consumption with CleanSmoke | CleanSmoke meets the UN goal of sustainably managed forests and requires to be labelled as resource-friendly technology. |
According to a new study from the Thünen Institute for Forest Ecosystems, the proportion of trees with healthy crowns in Germany has never been so low since 1984. So far, 180,000 hectares of forest have already died. It is not without reason that the United Nations, in its " Sustainability Development Goals", therefore also calls for the protection of terrestrial ecosystems and the sustainable management of forests. "Smokehouses are increasingly viewed critically in terms of wood consumption, probably also favored by climate change," says Uwe Vogel, Chairman of the CleanSmoke Coalition, a joint initiative of primary smoke product manufacturers, food producers and retailers. "With CleanSmoke, smoking enterprises as well as trade and consumers can easily show more responsibility for the forests and clearly lower the wood consumption".
The coalition looks to have a new approach on technology used to smoke food products in order to preserve the environment.
Compared to conventional smoking processes (friction or smoulder smoke), the innovative CleanSmoke smoking process can save a lot of wood - namely around 50%. CleanSmoke uses so-called pre-cleaned primary smoke condensates, which are produced exclusively from untreated residual wood. These are sawdust and wood chips from sawmills and the furniture industry or thinning, crown and branch wood from forestry.
According to calculations of the German Institute of Food Technologies (DIL), the potential for wood savings through the application of CleanSmoke amounts to approximately 3,400 tonnes per year. This, for example, could be used to build more than 100 wooden houses. The classic smoking process uses approx. 3.75 kg of wood per ton of smoked meat. The primary smoke condensate for the required amount of CleanSmoke can be produced from 1.9 kg of wood.

According to the DIL, the consumption of wood for conventional smoking is almost twice as high as for CleanSmoke. The use of about 6.8 million tons of wood for smoulder and friction smoking is compared to only about 3.4 million tons of residual wood for the production of primary smoke condensates. CleanSmoke can therefore also be understood as active protection of the native forests. Not least for this reason, the CleanSmoke Coalition (CSC) demands that products smoked with CleanSmoke should be labeled as resource-friendly.
| 1 | Technology | 2020-09-03 12:09:04 | 2025-08-06 13:14:40 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3610 | 54% increase in meat prices in Denmark | China's demand for pork has severe consequences in the Danish market. |
Danish pork producers may enjoy the role of the suppliers of meat in the Chinese market but the consumer in the domestic market is actually carrying the burden of the ASF crisis in Asia. Meat prices in Denmark, especially for products containing pork, have increased by 54% in 12 months and that may have drastic consequences for the Danish consumption of pork, according to Lars Aarup, director of sales analysis for the Danish retail business Coop.
"I can’t remember a time where we had a price increase at such a rapid pace before. That means the customers will eat more chicken than pork until the prices go down," Aarup declared for the local newspaper BT. According to the source, pig prices at the farm gate have increased by 60% since February 2019, which means that the costs have been passed almost entirely to the consumer.
In February 2019, 500 grams of combined pork and calf meat cost in Denmark around DKK23,95 ($3.53). In October 2019 the same product cost DKK29,95 ($ 4.41) – and in February 2020, it costs DKK36,95 ($ 5.44).
A program to help the farmers expand their breeding capacities has been launched by Danish Crown and may increase the country's pig output by 1.2 million head. however, analysts are foreseeing another spike in pork prices this year as the Chinese pig inventory is expected to decline further. "The swine fever hasn’t passed, so nothing indicates there’s going to be a price reduction. I think the price increases will continue,", commented Henning Otte Hansen, senior consultant at the University of Copenhagen.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-02-17 07:49:02 | 2025-08-05 12:09:06 | Details Edit Delete | ||
889 | 6.7 tonnes of ground beef and pork recalled from the stores |
Approximately 6.7 tonnes of ground beef and pork products produced by Interstate Meat Distributors, Inc., a Clackamas, Oregon establishment have been recalled from the market due to the suspicion that the meat could be infested with E. coli O157:H7 announced USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service at the end of the week.
The products were shipped to retail locations in Oregon, Utah, and Washington state and they are labelled as “ALL NATURAL EXTRA LEAN GROUND BEEF”; “ALL NATURAL GROUND BEEF CHUCK”; “GROUND BEEF AND PORK BLEND”; and “BROTHERS CHOICE 85% LEAN ANGUS GROUND BEEF PATTIES”.
The problem was discovered when the firm notified FSIS Inspection Program Personnel (IPP) that the firm’s sample of beef trim was positive for E. coli O157:H7 based on results by their third-party lab. There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products but the problem is treated as a high health risk.
The raw ground beef and pork items were produced and packaged on February 10, 2018, and February 12, 2018.

E. coli O157:H7 is a potentially deadly bacterium that can cause dehydration, bloody diarrhoea and abdominal cramps 2–8 days (3–4 days, on average) after exposure to the organism. While most people recover within a week, some develop a type of kidney failure called hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS). This condition can occur among persons of any age but is most common in children under 5-years old and older adults. It is marked by easy bruising, pallor, and decreased urine output. Persons who experience these symptoms should seek emergency medical care immediately.

Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase.
| 1 | Retail | 2018-03-04 12:30:04 | 2025-08-06 04:24:53 | Details Edit Delete | |||
2156 | 6.7 tons of pork products taken off the market due to metal contamination | Ganaderos Borges, Inc., a Naguabo, P.R. establishment, is recalling approximately 14,760 pounds (6.7 tons) of pork patty products that may be contaminated with extraneous materials, specifically metal. |
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said the raw pork patty items were produced on October 26, 2018.

The problem was discovered, and FSIS was notified, on Nov. 2, 2018 when the firm received a consumer complaint from a school that received the product. While the product was distributed to schools, it resulted from a commercial sale and was not part of food provided by the USDA for the National School Lunch Program.

The products recalled are 10-lb cardboard boxes containing 54-3 oz pieces of “PORK PATTIES FOR INSTITUTIONAL USE ONLY” bearing the Ganaderos Borges, Inc logo and stamped with a production date of “26 OCT 2018” and an expiration date of “16/11/18.”
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-07 16:00:03 | 2025-08-06 02:20:39 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3977 | 6% decrease in pork consumption in Spain, 2% in Italy | The crisis in hospitality will not severely damage the pork industries in both countries, according to Rabobank. |
The lockdown impact and a slow recovery in tourism will have just a small impact in pork consumption in Spain and Italy, according to the latest Rabobank report. The number of visitors from June to September will decrease by 38%-39%, which will have implications for both retail traffic and foodservice, leading to a reduction in pork consumption. Specifically, it is believed that the loss in foodservice traffic will be 8% in Spain and 5% in Italy. In retail, the loss amounts to 4% and 2% in Spain and Italy, respectively. The impact on foodservice and retail trade translates into a decrease in consumption of 6% (63,000 tonnes) in Spain and 2% (22,000 tonnes) in Italy, considering the total volume of sales in 2019. For the Spanish pork industry, the drop in sales is not the largest recorded in the last 15 years. In 2009, during the financial crisis, pork consumption in Spain dropped by 222,000 tonnes. Last year, volumes put in the domestic market were 228,000 tonnes due to increased demand in the export markets. For Italy, a reduction of 22,000 tonnes in pork consumption is also considered limited.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-07-21 09:25:50 | 2025-08-06 17:34:33 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4930 | 60,000 pigs culled in the Dominican Republic | The ASF outbreak threatens the American region. |
60,000 pigs were culled in the last month in the Dominican Republic due to an African swine fever outbreak. The situation worries big producing countries such as the US, Canada, Mexico, Brazil or Argentina. The first case of ASF in North America was detected 50 years ago in Cuba. It was followed by the Dominican Republic in 1978, Haiti in 1979 and Brazil in 1980. Currently, the disease is located 381 kilometers away from Puerto Rico, which is US territory.
During the 2021 Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, the biosecurity threat was exposed by officials present at the meeting. 100 farms have been hit by the disease, so far although, Haiti, a country that shares a land border with the Dominican Republic didn't report any outbreak.
To date, the Dominican Republic has already slaughtered 60,000 pigs throughout the country and of the 32 provinces that the country has, ASF is already present in the 25 provinces with the highest pig production.

During the Conference of Ministers of Agriculture of the Americas, held last week, international organizations and the Ministers of Agriculture approved a resolution that highlights the "importance of implementing national, regional and hemispheric actions to prevent and fight against African swine fever,".

| 1 | Industry | 2021-09-07 09:39:18 | 2025-08-06 17:34:26 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4401 | 600,000 ducks to be culled in France | Avian flu influenza registered in duck farms in the southwestern Landes region is forcing authorities to apply severe measures. |
After a huge number of avian flu outbreaks, France is forced to cull a record number of birds in duck farms across the region of Landes. 600,000 ducks are to be culled in an effort to prevent the spread of avian influenza infecting duck flocks in part of the country, health officials said this week. As of January 1, France had confirmed 61 bird flu outbreaks. 48 of them were in the southwestern Landes region, according to government officials. The culling includes the preventive killing of birds in areas surrounding the outbreak to limit the transition to farm flocks. Duck breeding in the Landes is used to supply the foie gras industry. Since November 2020 several European countries such as Germany, Hungary, Ireland, the Netherlands, France and the UK have reported avian flu (H5N8) outbreaks. Exports to other countries, especially to Asia, have been banned. The virus is also present in Rusia, Kazakhstan and Japan.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-01-08 11:18:50 | 2025-08-06 19:19:00 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3187 | 61 tonnes of poultry recalled in the US due to possible listeria contamination | The problem was discovered by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after 4 samples tested positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. |
Tip Top Poultry, a US poultry producer, is recalling 61.6 tonnes of fully cooked poultry products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes, informs the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The items were produced on January 21, 2019, and shipped to hotels, restaurants, and institutions nationwide. Nevertheless, some of the products arrived on the Canadian market and may be the source of an outbreak of Listeria. The contamination was confirmed by the Canadian Food Inspection Agency after testing four samples of the product.
"The problem was discovered on August 17, 2019, when the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) notified FSIS that a sample of product produced by Tip Top Poultry, Inc. confirmed positive for the presence of Listeria monocytogenes.

Canadian public health and food safety partners, including the Public Health Agency of Canada and the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, have been investigating an outbreak of Listeria monocytogenes. 2716 | 61% of the UK red meat consumers are willing to pay extra for better quality | Butcher shops have the opportunity to thrive due to the new trends that are taking over meat eaters in Great Britain. |
Over the last 25 years, the number of butchers in the UK has decreased by 60%, according to data from the Office for National Statistics but new trends among shoppers are reviving this segment, according to Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board.
Fresh red meat shoppers are more prepared than average to invest time shopping for their meat, wanting to become more informed about the product.
Quality is the main criteria but is also combined with factors such as ethical production and origin. 61% of the shoppers say they would be willing to pay extra for better quality meat, and 30% say they try to buy local produce to reduce their food miles. While many independent butchers are able to deliver on these factors, they remain in competition with supermarket chains, which continue to offer convenience as a key selling point. As well as offering a full range of pre-packed cuts of meat, many large supermarkets also have butchery counters that compete directly with High Street butchers. The convenience of including meat in the ‘main shop' has resulted in a significant shift in the way consumers make their purchases.
There are different trends observed in the British market and sometimes it refers to the type of meat, as for example pork, for which butcher sales were down by almost 13% last year, and who is outperformed by pre-packed products.
Contrary to the overall trend, loose beef and lamb outperformed pre-packed, again driven principally by butcher performance. While beef and lamb sales from the top 5 multiples declined by 2% and 10%, respectively in the last year, sales of beef from butchers increased by 3% and lamb sales from butchers only declined by 4%. Data from Kantar Worldpanel shows that total declines in loose red meat sales are mainly driven by existing meat purchasers simply buying less red meat, rather than purchasing pre-packed instead.
Environmental issues are also important as 91% of those who purchase fresh meat from the meat/butcher counter would be willing to switch to butcher meat wrapped in paper to cut down on plastic packaging, according to a survey initiated last year by AHDB/YouGov.
"With scratch cooking firmly back in fashion, butchers have the opportunity to encourage consumers to cook with unusual or less popular cuts of meat, while multiple retailers tend to stock only the most popular cuts. Butchers can use their expertise to advise on the best cooking approaches and recipe recommendations to allow shoppers to make informed choices. The challenge now for butchers is to offer something different to draw people in. As we see more movement towards ‘kitchen-ready’ meals that can be cooked easily within a certain time frame to fit around work, family and social activities, butchers could capitalise on this with pre-prepared meats.

Furthermore, with shoppers becoming more concerned about the environmental impact of their actions, sourcing locally could help alleviate some of their concerns. However, to follow the trend, butchers may need to think about introducing online shopping or click and collect options for convenience", recommended Amye Brassington, Trainee Analyst for AHDB.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-03-18 11:42:53 | 2025-08-06 17:34:05 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5248 | 63,350 tonnes of lamb sold last year in the UK retail |
British consumers are willing to spend more on lamb, according to data collected in 2021 in the UK market. The product ended the year with strong support from consumers, according to the latest sales data from Kantar. Lamb leg roasting joints performed well at retail when compared to Christmas 2020, with the volume of meat sold up +1.2%, and 6% higher than Christmas 2019.
While the overall volume of lamb sold at GB retailers in 2021 was 3% down on the bumper year of 2020 at 63,350 tonnes, the meat’s popularity among shoppers remains well above pre-pandemic levels, with the volume of lamb bought in 2021 exceeding that of 2019 by 2.4%.
In financial terms, the value of the lamb retail sector continues to rise. British consumers spent £662.5 million on lamb in 2021, 1.5% more than the previous year and a whopping 12.6% more than 2019.

The strong lamb sales at the end of the year were part of a robust Christmas period for the grocery sector, despite price inflation becoming more acute. Groceries as a whole were 3.5% more expensive overall in December 2021 compared to the previous festive period, whilst the average price of lamb was up 4.6% year-on-year.
According to Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), the retail data shows lamb in a strong position heading into the New Year.
"The popularity of lamb among British shoppers is substantially higher now than it was two years ago before the Covid pandemic. Although sales are slightly below the 2020 peak in terms of volume, spending on lamb has continued to grow across most types of cuts and products.
“Given the tight supply and high farmgate prices during much of 2021, it’s not surprising that there has been some upward movement in the retail price in the short term, and this may be part of the reason for the increased popularity of more economic products such as mince, where sales are up more than 20% as against 2019. Overall, retail consumers have come back to lamb over the past two years, with over 50% of the British population buying lamb at some point over that period", confirmed HCC Data Analyst Glesni Phillips.
| 1 | Retail | 2022-01-25 11:38:23 | 2025-08-06 16:45:32 | Details Edit Delete | |||
4881 | 7 years of moderate growth in the natural casings market | Between 2021 and 2028, experts are expecting a CAGR of 2.0% to add $350 million in market value. |
The Natural Sausage Casings Market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.0% from 2021 to 2028 to reach USD 2.79 billion by 2028 from USD 2.44 billion in 2021. In terms of volume, the global natural sausage casings market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 1.4% from 2021 to 2028 to reach 36,213.3 million meters by 2028 from 32,867.5 million meters in 2021, according to Meticulous Research.

Increasing urbanization, meat production, & meat consumption; consumer preference for natural casings over artificial casings; and the rising number of fast-food restaurant chains are the key factors driving the natural sausage casings market's growth. Moreover, growing demand from emerging economies—Asia-Pacific, Latin America, and the Middle East and Africa are expected to create lucrative opportunities for players operating in this market. However, casings manufacturers’ shift from natural casings to artificial casings due to operational challenges and increasing consumers' interest in vegan products are expected to hinder the growth of this market.

COVID-19 impact

The natural sausage casings industry has been harshly affected by the COVID-19 pandemic in the developed regions, such as North America and Europe. According to Rabobank, as of April 2020, US meat production declined by 20% compared to the previous year. This decline in meat production is expected to increase meat product prices, thereby increasing natural sausage casing prices. The outbreaks also have impelled the closure of 17 meat processing facilities in the US Furthermore, the COVID-19 outbreak and negative associations with animal-based food have also hampered the demand for natural sausage casings in Europe. Numerous countries in the European region have witnessed the worst outcomes of COVID-19, especially in 2020. As a result, there is an increasing trend of veganism in Europe, which is expected to weaken the demand for natural sausage casings in Europe.

The COVID-19 pandemic has caused severe disruptions throughout the entire meat industry in developing regions, including Asia-Pacific, the Middle East and Africa, and Latin America. Processed meat products face significantly reduced consumption, disrupted supply chains, and stringent trade regulations in these regions. As of July 2020, China’s National Health Commission issued coronavirus control guidelines for meat companies, including imported livestock and poultry products, that need to be virus-free before processing in Chinese plants. Also, the Chinese government aims to reduce both emissions and obesity levels by 2030. Customers in Asia and the Middle East tend to avoid short shelf life and non-essential products; there has been an increased emphasis on fresh produce like vegetables. These processed meat markets disrupt the demand for natural sausage casings in developing countries, thereby negatively impacting the global natural casings market.

Growth based on Fast Food industry

Globalization and urbanization have impacted eating habits, changing the trend towards increasing processed ready-to-eat products. The consumption pattern changes due to busy lifestyles, increasing per capita income, and preference for convenience food products are leading to a growing trend of fast-food consumption.

As demand for fast food increases, fast-food restaurant chains, and small eateries are also growing steadily across the globe. According to the International Franchise Association, globally, fast food generates revenue of over $570 billion. The United States has a major contribution to global fast-food revenue. Around 50 million people in the US depend upon fast food. The fast-food industry in the United States is worth ~$198.9 billion. By 2020, this figure is forecasted to exceed $223 billion. Thus, the growing fast-food industry and a rise in the number of fast-food restaurants & eateries that sell processed meat products, including sausages and hot dogs, drive the market for natural casings.

Mixed picture

Natural casings manufacturing involves several challenges, such as the difficulties in sourcing animal intestines, the volatility of raw material prices, and the long production time of natural casings. The cleansing requirement for animal intestines, the necessity of a cold storage environment, and high labor costs increase the overall operational cost.

In contrast, collagen casings are more suited to automated production and cheaper to manufacture than natural casings. They also meet food hygiene and traceability requirements more easily and can be more readily produced to technical specifications ensuring consistency, reliability, and versatility. This is expected to shift the focus of casing manufacturers from natural to artificial casings.

Smoked sausages to dominate the market

Based on source, the natural sausage casings market is segmented into hog, beef, sheep, and other sources. The hog casings segment is estimated to account for the largest share of the overall natural sausage casings market in 2021. Hog casings are mostly made from the main intestine of the pig, measuring approx. 20 yards in length. This segment's leading position is mainly attributed to its competency to offer wider caliber, high resistance capacity than other natural sausages casing sources, and molding ability into a wide variety of shapes. These casings are mostly used in pork or beef sausages, butcher’s thick sausages, Cumberland sausage, boerewors, frankfurters, smoked sausage, liver sausage, pepperoni, and bratwurst. However, the sheep segment is expected to grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period due to its unique properties such as the highest quality, small diameter, thinner wall, and tenderness.
Based on application, the natural sausage casings market is segmented into fresh, pre-cooked, smoked, and cured sausages. The smoked sausages segment is expected to grow at the fastest CAGR during the forecast period due to increasing demand for ready-to-go premium meat products, a greater variety of smoked products available in modern groceries, and increasing preference by craft food producers for smoking technology.
At the regional level, Europe is estimated to account for the largest share of the overall natural sausage casings market in 2021. The prominent position of Europe in the natural sausage casings market is primarily attributed to the presence of a large number of sausage manufacturers, changing food consumption patterns in favor of convenience food, and a surge in meat and sausage consumption. However, Asia-Pacific possesses lucrative growth potential for the natural casings market during the forecast period. This is mainly attributed to the rising number of fast-food restaurant chains, rising expenditure on sausage casings, growing westernization, growing population & urbanization. Most of the natural casings in this region will be driven by developing countries, including Indonesia, Thailand, and India, due to the increasing livestock production and processing and growing focus on processed meat products. The need for convenience is the major driver behind this region’s growing processed meat markets.

| 1 | Market | 2021-08-13 10:17:28 | 2025-08-06 17:15:27 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2765 | 7,000 Welsh farms are part of BVD eradication programme | It is estimated that a persistent BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhoea) infection could cost the average Welsh beef herd GBP 4500 a year. |
7,000 Welsh farms have applied for the Gwaredu BVD (BVD eradication) programme that is to continue until 2020, informs Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC). The three-year programme is available to all beef and dairy farms in Wales and is financially supported by GBP 10 million.
BVD (Bovine Viral Diarrhoea) suppresses the immune system of cattle, leading to other health problems and reduced fertility. As well as impacting on animal health, it is estimated that a persistent BVD infection could cost the average Welsh beef herd £4500 a year.
Dr Neil Paton, of the Royal Veterinary College, said; "This is an important opportunity for the industry to cooperate and remove a disease for the good of the industry as a whole. Farmers and vets should take this opportunity at all levels of the supply chain to ensure that their farms are BVD free through this project."
The programme is managed by Coleg Sir Gâr in partnership with the Royal Veterinary College, with HCC and other industry bodies represented on the project planning board.
HCC’s Flock and Herd Health Executive, Dr Rebekah Stuart, said, "It was good to hear that the Gwaredu BVD project is progressing well, with over 7,000 farms now involved in the programme. The main mode of transmission of BVD on farms is through persistently infected livestock. Dealing with persistent diseases such as BVD is one of the most effective steps we can take to improve the profitability and sustainability of Welsh livestock production."
Free tests will be performed on herds in order to discover sick animals. The first 88 farms have now been recruited onto HCC’s health planning project, which is part of its Red Meat Development Programme and is supported by the Welsh Government Rural Communities – Rural Development Programme 2014 – 2020, which is funded by the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Development and the Welsh Government.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-03-28 14:00:30 | 2025-08-06 14:56:45 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4173 | 70 cases of ASF confirmed in Germany | 15 new cases have appeared in one week and dozens of carcasses on an island remained not taken in statistics. |
15 new cases of ASF in wild boars reported last week increased the number of the outbreaks reported by Germany at 70, according to official data released at the beginning of the week. Still, a number of carcasses detected on a river island between Germany and Poland have not been tested due to WWII ammunition on the site. So far, the local government decided to put an electric fence on the entire island to keep the remaining wild boars on the site.
Until now, all the sites where the new carcasses were found are in the previous core areas. The district Oder-Spree has a total of 54 ASF-infected wild boars, Spree-Neisse 13 and the district Märkisch-Oderland three. In these areas, there are 300 pig farms and about 85,000 animals, according to the Federal Ministry of Agriculture. Some of those pigs have already slaughtered and put in consumption. Ministers of Agriculture from the Czech Republic and Poland have been invited by their German counterpart Julia Klockner to discuss the project of a wild boar-free "white zone" in the border area. Minister Klockner announced that has obtained financial support from the European Commission to build a solid fence at the border to Poland.

Human factor increases the risk

"The greatest risk for the spread of ASF is still the human factor," stressed Saxony-Anhalt's Minister of Agriculture, Prof. Claudia Dalbert, referring to the possibility of contamination through improperly disposed of pork products containing the virus as the source of the outbreak. Restrictions for the farmers in the area are in order to prevent any contamination and the spreading of the virus to other zones. Since the beginning of the epidemic, on September 12, Germany has lost access to several export markets in Asia, South America and North America. More than 300,000 tonnes of pork that were supposed to be exported in the Chinese market this year is expected to be delivered in the EU market. The average pork price in Germany has lost €0.20 in the last 30 days.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-10-21 10:48:37 | 2025-08-06 12:17:06 | Details Edit Delete | ||
8086 | 70 percent of Seara farms already use solar energy | Company promotes the adoption of clean and renewable electricity Sandro Fontanella's farm, an integrated producer in Forquilhinha (SC), meets between 80% and 83% of its energy demand with clean and renewable energy sources. |
JBS's Seara ended 2024 with an impressive milestone: 70% of its integrated chicken producers in the country use solar energy on their farms. Five years earlier, this number was approximately 5.61%; since then, there has been an exponential increase of 1,149%. In a single year, solar energy production on Seara's integrated farms across the country totaled 205,182,885.60 kWh, enough to supply a city with approximately 90,000 inhabitants for 12 months.

Farms powered by solar energy are distributed across eight states and the Federal District. In São Paulo, just over 77% of units have adopted photovoltaic panels, while in Santa Catarina, the rate reached 73%.

With the implementation of greater automation in poultry houses and controlled indoor environments, electricity has come to play a relevant role in the cost formation of producers. On the other hand, photovoltaic panels, with an increasingly greater dominance in the production of electricity from solar panels, reaffirm themselves as a competitive opportunity in this scenario.

In addition to guiding and supporting the implementation of the panels, Seara has encouraged the installation of photovoltaic panels on farms through a checklist that seeks to recognize good production practices through sustainable actions.

Seara has a checklist that guides the bonus policy for integrated poultry and swine partners. In addition to structural and procedural adequacy criteria, sustainability items are also included. Among the ESG criteria, in addition to the installation of renewable energy sources on farms, such as photovoltaic panels, there is also the implementation of a program for the identification, separation and correct disposal of solid waste and the adaptation of farms to animal welfare standards. Farms that engage in all three fronts are entitled to the bonus.

For Sandro Fontanella, an integrated producer in Forquilhinha, Santa Catarina, investing in renewable energy systems goes beyond the environmental benefits. "It's like investing in a new activity, which becomes an additional source of income for us producers," he says. "Before, we spent a considerable amount on purchasing energy from concessionaires. Today, the amount saved or generated by the photovoltaic panel system is used to pay off its financing, which has a term of six years," he highlights.

Currently, the Fontanella farm meets between 80% and 83% of its energy demand with clean and renewable energy, which corresponds to approximately 220,000 kWh to 240,000 kWh per year. "We are developing an expansion project to reach 100% of our demand, something that is feasible thanks to Seara's incentive policies, which make the business even more accessible", he says.

"The initiative has the potential to pay for itself in the medium term, transforming what was previously a simple cost into a new source of margin for the producer. Thus, solar energy, in addition to representing a more sustainable solution, also proves to be an economically advantageous alternative for the integrated producers' businesses", highlights Vamiré Luiz Sens Júnior, executive manager of Agricultural Sustainability at Seara.
| 1 | Technology | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-01-14 00:05:48 | 2025-08-06 16:23:35 | Details Edit Delete |
