2828 EU pork exports in China to rise, driving prices up This year, the Chinese market is going to demand more pork from the European producers, foresee the European Commission.
EU pork exports are seen reaching 2.92 million tonnes in 2019, up 9% from 2.68 million last year, according to the latest agricultural market report released by the European Commission.
Last year, pork exports have increased only by 4% due to low imports from China in the first 10 months of 2018. China is the main export market for EU pork and has grown in importance since a Russian embargo on EU supplies was imposed in 2014.
Nevertheless, this year, due to the ASF situation, China will import 10 million tonnes of pork, according to a Rabobank analysis and that will make the prices jump in the global market.
"In 2019, pigmeat exports should grow significantly as Chinese demand rises. Prices are rising as supply tightens and export prospects improve", says the Commision report.
Pork prices in China are expected to grow by 70% until the end of the year, as the Asian country reported a 10% decrease in its national pig inventory in the first quarter, according to an official source quoted by Reuters.
    Market 2019-04-18 07:02:12 2025-07-31 19:05:34 Details Edit Delete
2840 US pork producers expect to sell half carcasses to China Wholesale pork in the Chinese market is now at $3/kg and is driving up prices in supplier's markets as well.
Despite the high tariff rate for American pork in the Chinese market, US producers are hoping to increase their sales to China. In his latest market report, Jim Long, President and CEO of Genesus Inc, mentioned the possibility that part of the US packing industry is gearing up to send half carcasses to China.
"The big boost in prices are in the Pork exporting countries to China of USA., Canada, Spain, and of course China itself which is seeing pork supplies drop from ASF related production declines.
We expect to see strong prices for all countries that can export to China for a long time. There is strong indication part of U.S. packing industry is gearing up to send half carcasses to China,", said Mr Long.
Wholesale pork in China is currently averaging 3.03/kg and the prices are predicted to hike by 70% until the end of this year.
    Market 2019-04-23 12:21:06 2025-08-01 20:23:06 Details Edit Delete
2851 Expert: Real movement in China's pig prices to start at the end of summer It is also anticipated that domestic pig prices in China may reach extreme upper limits surpassing all-time highs perhaps starting in January 2020.
China's crisis on pork started to influence the global market since March but the real effects will become visible at the end of this summer, predicts Lylel Jones, Genesus Director of Sales China.
In April, pig prices in China have stabilized to $2.24/ live kg. "We believe this is an indication that heavy flow of pigs going to the slaughterhouses due to ASF continues. Reports are some slaughterhouses are running double shifts to accommodate the numbers of animals being marketed at this time. While the overall inventories of the breeding herds and commercial production farms is steadily declining, there is a surplus of pigs going to slaughter resulting in these relatively flat pig prices", explained Mr Jones.
The prices are going to increase but the speed is depending on how much cold storage there is available when flows to the slaughterhouses begin to shrink. "Back to the question of when the impact of all this will affect domestic pig prices in China? No one really knows for sure but there has been a lot of speculation upon this topic because it shall also continue to impact Global markets.
In talking with an analyst recently, indications are we may begin seeing real movement in pig prices toward the end of this summer. It is also anticipated that domestic pig prices in China may reach extreme upper limits surpassing all-time highs perhaps starting in January 2020", says Lylel Jones.
Meantime, biosecurity measures adopted in the North and Central China are paying results, with fewer reports of ongoing outbreaks in these provinces.
"In the south, it seems the spread has been picking up in provinces like Guangdong, Guangxi, and Fujian. Everyone’s focus is upon protecting their farms and learning and adopting biosecurity procedures.
Biosecurity is the most important daily task- nothing else matters. Even some farms not yet affected by the disease have paused breeding to focus upon perfecting these procedures.
We hear of very elaborate biosecurity systems being developed with not only physical barriers but special surveillance cameras with uplinks to satellites. These systems feature custom software to provide verification that these procedures are being fully implemented.

As a result of these intensive efforts to adopt and master biosecurity, there are reports that other diseases are declining and overall herd health improving. Thus, we are seeing some positive results that will provide benefits for the future from the battle against this unfortunate disease", added the expert.
    Market 2019-05-03 07:07:56 2025-08-02 00:26:01 Details Edit Delete
2862 VIDEO: Barutkin, USMEF: "We are interested in small beef markets in the EU"

Last month, USDA, USMEF and US Embassy in Bucharest have offered a culinary show in Bucharest for Romanian importers and hospitality sector, in which chef Nicolae Lic? prepared different dishes of American beef.
Even if Romania is not a big market for US beef, Yuri Barutkin, USMEF representative for Europe, Russia an CIS, believes that the future holds much potential of growth in countries such as Poland, Bulgaria or Romania, where beef consumption is still low at this time.

"We think that is more probable to see a growth in beef consumption in these countries in the following years that to expect an increase in markets such as Germany, where the average per capita consumption of beef is already at 13 kg per year", explained Barutkin in an interview for Euromeatnews.
    Market 2019-05-08 11:08:47 2025-08-02 00:12:30 Details Edit Delete
2863 Record volumes of lamb exported by Australia and New Zealand Despite the fact that both countries have flooded the global market with lamb, prices are still holding, according to MLA analysts.
Australia and New Zealand have exported a higher volume of lamb in the first quarter of 2019 but that didn't influence the prices, according to an MLA analysis.
First quarter New Zealand lamb exports lifted 11% year-on-year and were 5% above the five-year average. Typically, New Zealand lamb exports peak in March but, depending on seasonal conditions, can remain elevated through to the end of May. Given the lift in exports in March, New Zealand lamb supply may have already peaked for the season.

Meanwhile, lamb-producing regions in Australia have continued to grapple with deteriorating feed conditions and water shortages, pushing increased lamb and sheep numbers through to slaughter. First quarter Australian lamb exports were up 19% year-on-year and were 27% above the five-year average.
The most significant transformation in export dynamics has come from China, purchasing record volumes of imported product in 2018. For New Zealand, China now represents half of the total sheepmeat exports; for Australia, it is closer to a quarter. While both countries have greatly benefitted from China, the market remains sensitive to fluctuations in its domestic flock and ongoing trade tensions.
However, Beef + Lamb NZ estimated the 2018-19 lamb crop to decline slightly, to 23.7 million head, so high export levels may reflect dryer-than-normal conditions in New Zealand and fewer lambs being held back as replacements. Looking ahead, lamb supplies in New Zealand will continue to dry up until the new season commences in the last quarter of 2019. In Australia, much hinges on a decent autumn break in key sheep-producing regions.
    Market 2019-05-08 10:32:44 2025-07-31 18:35:05 Details Edit Delete
2875 A new marketing campaign for lamb is to be launched by AHDB as the industry seeks to further support the sheep sector.
AHDB will invest £1.4 million in a new marketing campaign with the goal to bring back the lamb in the menu for the British consumers. The promotional push, which has the backing of the NFU, will see targeted promotional activity in two bursts, the first starting in summer and the second in September, to coincide with peak supply of British lamb.

By focusing on lamb’s unique flavour and its versatility, the work aims to stem the steady decline in lamb sales and boost consumer attitudes towards the meat across a number of different target audiences.
AHDB will be liaising closely with retailers, foodservice outlets and industry stakeholders to ensure a coordinated approach to support promotion of the sheep sector in the coming months.
Will Jackson, AHDB Beef & Lamb Sector Strategy Director, said: “AHDB has been working for some months to see how best we can support the sheep sector in the face of uncertainty. Though outcomes are still unclear, we’re focusing our marketing efforts on sheep for the forthcoming seasons to ensure lamb is at the forefront of consumers’ minds – coinciding with the availability of autumn lamb for shoppers. This will mean efforts being concentrated on delivering a lamb advertising and promotional campaign in summer and September 2019. We have discussed this lamb focus with the NFU and it is fully supportive of the board’s move".
The work forms part of a much wider, rolling programme of promotion of red meat, covering consumer, trade, work with retailers, health, nutrition and the environment. In 2018/19, AHDB Beef & Lamb invested in £9.762m of its income on promotion and PR support for beef and lamb at home and abroad, roughly 61% of its income.
    Market 2019-05-10 07:17:41 2025-08-01 22:15:57 Details Edit Delete

2887 Belarus complains about meat trade with Russia In Q1, just 69,000 tonnes of meat products were shipped to Russia. "If the dynamics stay in place, the annual target will be missed", say official sources.
The Russian Agriculture Ministry is invited on May 15 in Minsk to discuss trade issues with its Belarusian counterpart. "In January-March we shipped 69,000 tonnes of meat products. If the dynamics stay in place, the annual target will be missed as well. Restrictions of the Federal Service for Veterinary and Phytosanitary Surveillance of Russia (Rosselkhoznadzor) on our food export are having a negative effect on the ability to hit the specified figures", declared Aleksei Bogdanov, Head of the Central Office for Foreign Economic Activities of the Belarusian Agriculture and Food Ministry, for Belta agency.
He also stressed that there are no expectations for the restriction to be lifted immediately due to the absence of Rosselkhoznadzor head from the meeting.
Another discussion is regarding the draft concept of the program on forming a competitive base of genetic resources as part of the Belarusian pedigree livestock farming system. The program provides for the development of crossbreeding and selection centers in Belarus and Russia. Some facilities will be located in Belarus while some will be located in Russia. The program is supposed to reduce dependence on pedigree genetic material imported from third countries.
    Market 2019-05-14 07:02:20 2025-08-01 13:16:22 Details Edit Delete
2888 South Korean pork imports remain stable in Q1 Spain is increasing its presence in this market, while Germany and the Netherlands are preserving their position.
South Korean pork imports were relatively stable during the first three months of 2019, with only a small variation of -0.5%. The volume of pork imports reached 146,200 tonnes in the first quarter of the year, with EU countries covering 50% of it (73,500 tonnes). Nevertheless, Imports from the EU-28 are down 3% from last year, according to an AHDB analysis.
Spain is increasing its presence in this market, while Germany and the Netherlands are preserving their position.

US pork imports also show a decrease but the gap seems to be filled by Canada, who has overcome the milestone of 10 thousand tonnes/quarter. "South Korean pork imports have been growing for the last five years, along with domestic production. Exports, although small in comparison, have dropped off significantly over the same time, together indicating that domestic demand is growing for pork", explained Hannah Clarke, Analyst at AHDB.
    Market 2019-05-14 09:38:14 2025-08-01 19:17:26 Details Edit Delete
2906 UK pork imports are rising Pork imports in March are up by 7%, with Ireland, Denmark, and Germany as main suppliers in the British market.
Imports of pig meat, excluding offal, have increased during March by 7% compared to figures from the same month last year. Imports from Denmark, Germany, and Ireland have all increased significantly year-on-year. Total pig meat imports in the year to March increased to 237,000 tonnes. At the same time, increased demand from China and the Netherlands has offset declines to other markets, which resulted in a 0.5% decrease in exports, according to AHDB analyst Tom Forshaw.
The domestic production is characterized by higher carcass weights, which supported an increased production of 1% in April. "Clean pig slaughter in April was up by 1%, to 888,700 head, according to Defra data released on May 16. This keeps pig slaughter for the year roughly in line with the same period of 2018. Higher carcass weights remain a theme, resulting in an increase in production for the year to April of 1% to, 311,000 tonnes. This increase is despite boar and sow slaughterings dropping sharply in April", commented Forshaw.
    Market 2019-05-17 10:14:13 2025-08-01 16:27:04 Details Edit Delete
2911 Japan lifts all restrictions on US beef Exports may increase 7 to 10%, or by $150 million to $200 million per year, according to USMEF.
At the end of last week, US Secretary of Agriculture Sonny Perdue announced that all the restrictions of US beef exports to Japan were lifted immediately. This will pave the way for expanded beef sales to Japan by up to $200 million annually, according to the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
"While most of the US beef shipped to Japan will continue to be from fed cattle under 30 months of age, the opportunities for over-30-month beef cuts and beef variety meat are significant. Japanese buyers from the pre-BSE era are very familiar with these opportunities, and USMEF has been educating many others who entered the industry over the past 15 to 20 years.

USMEF estimates that removal of the cattle age restriction will increase exports to Japan 7 to 10%, or by $150 million to $200 million per year. Beef muscle cuts from over-30-month cattle that are most likely to achieve success with Japanese buyers include short plate, chuckeye rolls, short ribs, middle meats, clods and briskets. Beef variety meat items most likely to be in demand include outside skirts, hanging tenders, mountain chain tripe, tongues, abomasum and intestines. The ability to use beef from over-30-month cattle will also lower costs for companies exporting processed beef products to Japan", said USMEF President, Dan Halstrom in a statement.
Last month, the US exported 74,000 tonnes of beef to Japan, the largest market overall, according to official data and another major step it will consist in getting a Free Trade Agreement between the two countries. "US beef needs to be on a level playing field in Japan. So USMEF is also anxious to see progress in the US-Japan trade negotiations", added Mr Halstrom.
    Market 2019-05-20 03:31:48 2025-08-01 21:33:29 Details Edit Delete
2918 Argentinian beef sets strong foothold in China At SIAL China 2019, most of the Argentine companies negotiated all the meat they had available and many are just offering containers for August or September of this year.
Due to the ASF crisis and trade barriers existing between China and the US, the volatility in the Chinese animal protein market is expected to grow in the following months. High prices are already present in the market, as the Argentinian beef producers have found for themselves.

“It is a fair with a movement never seen and of very good prices. Operations are being carried out with values that exceed 1,000 to 1,500 dollars what was paid last year”, declared Jorge Torelli, Vice President of Institute for Promotion of Argentinian Beef, for De Frente Al Campo magazine. Most of the Argentine companies negotiated all the meat they had available and many are just offering containers for August or September of this year. The values per ton are ranging between $5,200 and $7,000, but the risk of a bubble in prices appearing in the market is also high.
    Market 2019-05-21 08:37:23 2025-08-01 11:37:22 Details Edit Delete
2922 Expert: "The real big drop in hog numbers will start in August" The ASF situation in China is more severe than anticipated and it may take the pork industry about 5 years to recover.
China's loss of hogs still stands at 10% but the real disaster is in the sow herd, where the losses are estimated to be of 40-60%, according to Jim Long's conclusion after visiting China. The President-CEO of Genesus talked to representatives of the industry and anticipates a spike in prices after July.
"From what we can figure from talking to large hog operations, drug companies, veterinarians and other industry people the loss of sows is at 10% either way from 50%. That is 40-60% sow loss, with farms still breaking with African Swine Fever (ASF). Have to say that the degree of loss is greater than we expected.
It appears that the big loss of sows was in the January- Feb time period. From what we can discern other pigs in nursery-finishers have been to the most extent spared. The expectation is the real big drop in hog numbers will start in August, in line with the huge sow herd liquidation first of this year. Official China hog marketing’s in April were 43.66 million. A 10% decrease from a year ago. In context the decline is equal to about half all U.S. marketing’s in April", commented Mr Long.
Starting July, all stored pork will be checked for ASF. Next step will be China government veterinarians testing hogs at slaughter plants. Positive pork will be burnt. The emptying of pork inventories will coincide with the next level of hog market decline in August and also comes at a time of seasonal pork consumption increasing. "This triple whammy will be a trigger for a price jump", believes Jim Long.
Repopulating farms is a difficult task right now and also an expensive one, with pigs weaned at 28 days selling for 800-900 RMB ($120-135) each. "The Chinese Government is aggressively supporting the rebuilding and revitalization of the industry. China has lost many new nucleus farms due to ASF. At some point when the dust settles there will be significant importation of swine breeding stock to rejuvenate the swine genetic base", observed the company's CEO. Still, the move may come too soon as the ASF outbreak is far from being contained.
"Discussion about when farms can be successfully restocked after ASF is a major discussion if not confusion. In Russia it has been one year of empty barn before restocking allowed", added Mr Long.
As the largest exporter of swine breeding stock to China over the last 3 years, Genesus accounts for the last import of swine genetics from anywhere, in October.
    Market 2019-05-22 01:56:18 2025-08-01 06:45:14 Details Edit Delete

2942 China official admits that meat imports will continue to rise During Q1, China's meat imports have reached 1.11 million tonnes, up by 11.6% compared to the same period last year.
Meat imports in China are on the rise, as Gao Feng, spokesperson for the Chinese Ministry of Commerce, admitted at the end of last week. At this point, China has already imported 1.11 million tonnes of meat in the first three months of the year to cover a gap created by the ASF virus in its swine sector.
The volume is up by 11.6% from what the Asian country used to import in the first quarter of 2018 when the disease was absent from the country.
The need for pork in the Chinese market is so high that importers are willing to pay up to 65% in duties for the US pig meat. Even so, some pig meat imports from the US did not enter China, due to "quarantine standards", as the official mentioned.
China recently canceled import order for up to 1,000 tonnes of US pork but Gao Feng said that "Chinese companies make their own decisions as to whether to import pork from the US or not".

Germany, Spain, the US, Canada, Denmark, Brazil, Netherland, and France are among the major sources of China's pork imports, according to data from Chinese customs.
Recently, the Brazilian minister of Agriculture informed that 6 more meat plats from its country have received clearance to export to China. 24 other plants are to be evaluated further by the Chinese inspectors. Brazil currently has 16 beef plants, nine hog plants and between 37 and 39 chicken plants authorized to export into China. 2944 Positive outlook for Danish Crown, as China starts importing meat
The last weeks of fiscal year 2018/2019 have changed the outlook for Danish Crown operations, as China's meat imports are growing significantly. In just a few months, the company has gone from a weak market and a partial stop for exports to China to a total profit from continuing operations before special items of almost 1.1 billion DKK (€147.3 million).
"All in all, it is an acceptable result, but it has been a challenging six months. The first quarter was weak, and we, therefore, presented a comprehensive cost-cutting plan which will reduce costs by 385 million DKK (€51.5million) across the group. We are now beginning to see the results of this, and following the recovery of the market, things are finally moving in the right direction", says Jais Valeur, Group CEO of Danish Crown.
Despite lower raw material prices for both pork and beef, Danish Crown’s revenue increased by 1.5 per cent from 30.1 to 30.6 billion DKK (€403 million to €409 million). This is explained by a number of acquisitions, the largest of which are in Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland, and which all, as expected, are making positive contributions to earnings.
Our UK business Tulip Ltd still presents the biggest challenge. Following capacity adjustments and an extreme cost focus, the business is now moving in the right direction.

"We still have a long hard journey ahead of us to get the UK business back on track, but the plan we devised over the summer and autumn of 2018 has the desired effect. Our focus is now on staying on course and winning new business to ensure that Tulip Ltd can once again start contributing positively to earnings in Danish Crown", said Jais Valeur.
Since the end of the first half-year, the pig price has increased by 25%, and Danish Crown expects the payment per kg paid to farmers to increase further over the summer.
A spike in pork prices is good for the producers but is going to increase the competition in the retail, especially in the mid-range segment, where the discount chains are going to be act aggressively.
The cattle price peaked in summer 2018, after which prices saw a declining trend in the first half-year 2018/19. Compared to the prior-year period, cattle are being traded at an average price of almost 2 DKK less per kg, which corresponds to a decrease of 8%.

The strategic decision to pool procurement across the group is contributing as planned despite external price increases for energy and transport, among other things. Based on our experience, there is money to be saved from implementing such initiatives across the group. Therefore, the Executive Board now includes a Chief Operating Officer (COO) who will focus on continuing this work as well as on realising Danish Crown’s sustainability strategy towards 2030.

"Unfortunately, we are falling some way short of our strategic target of delivering a settlement price to our owners that is 0.60 DKK (€0.08) better than the EU index. However, this does not change the fact that we have set a clear course for Danish Crown", added Valeur. Nonetheless, operating profit for the full year is expected to be above last year’s result.
    Market 2019-05-28 00:59:09 2025-08-02 05:24:11 Details Edit Delete
2945 Taste is the key driver in the American food market The impact of taste on purchasing decisions is up significantly from 2018, reveals IFIC Foundation's Food&Health survey.
Americans are interested in taste and the price they pay for their food, reveals the latest Food and Health survey from IFIC Foundation.
"Every Survey has seen “taste” reign supreme and in 2019 the trend continues. Deemed important by 86% of consumers, the impact of taste on purchasing decisions is up significantly from 81% in 2018. Other factors such as “price” (68%), “healthfulness” (62%) and “convenience” (57%) held steady. “Sustainability” as a purchase driver registered in the mid- to high-30 percentages through the years, but the 2019 refinement to “environmental sustainability” resulted in a drop to 27%, indicating that consumers may think of more than the environment when it comes to sustainability", says the report.
Regardless of the impact on purchasing decisions, over half of the consumers (54%) say it’s at least somewhat important that the products they buy to be produced in an environmentally sustainable way. Among those 54%, many look for specific labels or attributes to assess whether they believe a product is environmentally sustainable: 51% perceive products that are locally produced as environmentally sustainable, followed by products literally labeled as sustainably produced (47%), labeled as non-GMO/not bioengineered (47%), labeled as organic (44%), having recyclable packaging (41%) and having minimal packaging (35%).

Sustainability isn’t the only term that means different things to different people. Even a seemingly straightforward term like “plant-based” is subject to interpretation. About three-quarters (73%) of people say they have heard of plant-based diets, and about half (51%) are interested in learning more about them. Consumers who have tried any diet in the past year are far more likely to have heard of plant-based diets than those who have not tried a diet in the past year (82% vs. 68%).

But consumers are split on what they believe a plant-based diet means. About one-third (32%) say it is a vegan diet that avoids all animal products, including eggs and dairy. A similar percentage (30%) define it as a diet that emphasizes minimally processed foods that come from plants, with limited consumption of animal meat, eggs, and dairy. Another one in five (20%) believe it to be a vegetarian diet that avoids animal meat, while 8% say it is a diet in which you try to get as many fruits and vegetables as possible, with no limit on consuming animal meat, eggs, and dairy.

Animal products are a more popular source of protein than plants, with 52% of Survey takers saying they eat animal protein at least once per day versus 34% who say they eat plant-based protein—but the tide may be turning. "The value of beef exports to China nearly doubled in the year to April 2019 compared with the previous year.", he added.
According to New Zealand Statistical Bureau, beef exports to China are up $420 million and lamb up $340 million.
At the same time, China pork imports were higher by 24% in April compared with the same month last year, Spain, Germany, the US, Canada and Brazil being the main suppliers of pig meat for this market.
    Market 2019-05-29 05:48:06 2025-07-31 17:59:13 Details Edit Delete
