5209 | Cambodia increases border control for pig imports from Thailand | Farmers in border provinces worry about the outbreak reported in the neighboring country. |
African swine fever outbreaks in Thailand make pig farmers in Cambodia nervous. Although Cambodia has recorded multiple ASF cases in pig farms for the last two years, farmers and officials worry about a new wave of infections that may destroy all the progress reported in the last 18 months.
Battambang province’s agriculture officials are already on the ground checking the small-scale pig farms to make sure none of the animals are infected with ASF, reports the Khmer Times newspaper.

Its veterinary department director Pal Seth said yesterday that he visited pig farms in two provinces after having heard of the ASF outbreak in Thailand.
“I had to explain to the breeders on ASF, its symptoms and how to prevent the pigs from getting infected with the disease,” he said, adding it’s important to educate breeders on the ASF, although due to Covid, many of the pig farms had closed their businesses and only a handful was operating.
The Thai government has already swung into action to inspect pig farms nationwide to prevent a major outbreak of the ASF after reports that the nation detected its first case in a pet hog.
However, the disease may be present in Thailand for at list nine months now. In March 2021, Vietnam decided to suspend live pig imports from Thailand due to traces of African swine fever found in some of the pigs imported. Pig breeders in Thailand have also expressed worry over the outbreak, especially with there being no vaccine to protect animals against the ASF.

Meantime, officials in Bangkok decide to curb live pigs exports for 3 months in order to shore up domestic supplies. Pork prices in Thailand rose by 30% this January compared with the same month a year ago and the Thai government hopes to keep inflation under control.

| 1 | Industry | 2022-01-11 11:04:44 | 2025-08-06 03:16:39 | Details Edit Delete | ||
7277 | USMEF conducts first-ever US red meat trade seminar in Okinawa | As tourism rebounds in Japan, USMEF targets the foodservice sector of popular destination Okinawa as an untapped market for U.S. beef and pork. |
With the support of USMEF member suppliers and the local consul general, USMEF provided a comprehensive overview of the U.S. red meat industry to more than 140 members of the regional meat trade in Naha, the capital city of Japan’s Okinawa Prefecture on Okinawa island. Okinawa is a popular destination for inbound tourists and domestic travelers, especially as the weakened yen makes international travel expensive.

With a long-standing U.S. military presence on the island, Okinawans are familiar with American food culture but primarily consume beef from Australia and New Zealand and pork from the European Union. As tourism rebounds on the island, USMEF determined the time was right to begin differentiating U.S. beef and pork in this market.

"The number of visitors is increasing, including foreign visitors but especially Japanese tourists. It’s more affordable because of the weaker yen", says USMEF Japan Director Satoshi Kato. "We see this an opportunity to jump-start U.S. red meat trade in this region".

Naha Consul General Matthew Dolbrow welcomed the group and thanked them for attending while six USMEF member suppliers were on hand to introduce their products to the trade. Following presentations about U.S. red meat production and grain feeding, which contributes to the superior flavor and tenderness of U.S. beef and pork, USMEF shared marketing strategies for 2024 and described how USMEF can support promotional programs.

USMEF also provided a tasting session with a variety of dishes, including roast beef (cow rib-eye roll), beef soup (short-cut clod), steak cooked at low temperatures (outside flat), thick-cut pork steak (loin, backs), Cuban sandwiches (Boston butt) and a fusion dish with Okinawan and American pulled pork.

Kato reports that regional distributors have already begun receiving orders for American beef and pork items. USMEF will follow up with targeted accounts on the island for additional workshops and plans for public relations and social media support.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-04-05 00:15:29 | 2025-08-06 03:16:52 | Details Edit Delete | |
3609 | German poultry imports banned in the Philippines | Officials in Manilla decided to place a temporary ban on poultry and poultry products from Germany due to the bird flu outbreak. |
The Philippines placed a temporary ban on poultry and poultry products from Germany due to the bird flu outbreak reported by the European country earlier this week. The import ban on Germany covers the domestic and wild birds, and their products, including poultry meat, day-old chicks, eggs and semen.
Earlier, Manila ordered the slapping of the ban on poultry products from the Czech Republic, Ukraine, Hungary, Slovakia, Poland and China, countries that reported bird flu outbreaks in the last couple of months.
Last month, Filipino officials renewed the country's system accreditation for poultry meat imports from Germany asking that the source of meat shall be from animals born and raised in Germany and must not contain residues of antibiotics, pesticides, hormones, heavy metals, radioactivity and similar substances that may pose public health and environmental hazards.

On February 10, Germany confirmed a bird flu outbreak on a family farm in Bretzfeld, Hohenlohekreis, Baden-Wurrtemberg, with 69 birds affected by the H5N8 virus.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-02-14 09:12:24 | 2025-08-06 03:17:01 | Details Edit Delete | ||
7712 | USMEF seminars seek to ease red meat trade obstacles in Colombia | USMEF partnered with USDA and the U.S. Embassy on seminars about technical trade barriers with Colombian import officials in Bogota and Cartagena. |
A need for in-person discussions between U.S. and Colombian officials about longstanding technical trade issues was the genesis for USMEF seminars in Bogota and Cartagena this summer. With the support of USDA’s Foreign Agricultural Service and U.S. Embassies in both cities, USMEF conducted educational seminars about the U.S. red meat production and inspection chain for Colombian regulatory officials and inspectors working at ports, airports and border crossings throughout Colombia.

The 50 Colombian participants learned about U.S. pork and beef production, transportation, logistics, the U.S. federal inspection system and the extensive safeguards that ensure food safety in the U.S., including mandatory Hazard Analysis & Critical Control Point (HACCP) requirements.

Planning took several months but the seminars’ timing was fortuitous due to Colombia’s decision in April to ban imports of U.S. beef from states where highly pathogenic avian infuenza (HPAI) has been detected in dairy cows. This ban remains in place.

"A primary objective of these seminars is to create an environment that fosters discussions with Colombian import officials about how our federal inspection system works", said Courtney Heller, USMEF director of export services. The seminars also allowed import officials to address U.S. questions about Colombia’s import and inspection programs.

"Very few plants in Colombia are federally inspected and their import regulations are based on that experience. The result is a trade-restrictive import regime", said Heller.

The seminars helped assure Colombian officials of the U.S. commitment to food safety, Heller added, and there was strong interest on both sides for meetings on an annual basis to discuss outstanding trade issues.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-09-06 00:05:43 | 2025-08-06 03:17:12 | Details Edit Delete | |

1383 | Tysons Foods strengthens its position in the organic chicken market with new acquisition | The US meat processing and packaged food group Tyson Foods recently announced the acquisition of the organic chicken brand Tecumseh Poultry LLC. The company has not offered any details regarding the transaction. |
Tecumseh Poultry's operations include two plants located in Tecumseh and Waverly, Nebraska, as well as live operations. Tyson Foods currently plans to operate Tecumseh Poultry as a separate, wholly owned subsidiary and expects to retain its approximately 600 team members, including operations staff, sales teams and management.

The acquisition also includes the air-chilled Smart Chicken brand.

Tecumseh Poultry was founded in 1998 and produces air-chilled, fresh chicken, as well as deli-style chicken and a variety of chicken sausages. The air-chilling process involves using cold air to cool chicken during processing, while the most common method used by the U.S. chicken industry is water-chilling. Both methods are monitored by USDA inspectors and are considered safe.

“Consumers want choices. More and more consumers want options for fresh, organic food that fits their lifestyles,” said Eric Schwartz, chief marketing officer of Poultry for Tyson Foods. “The Smart Chicken brand is a leader in this key organic category, and the category’s growth makes this acquisition a strategic fit for Tyson Foods.”

The organic fresh chicken market grew its sales volume by 8.6% between 2016 and 2017, more than four times the rate of conventional poultry, according to Nielsen’s Perishables data.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-06-06 15:34:40 | 2025-08-06 03:17:52 | Details Edit Delete | ||
8334 | US: NCBA outlines trade priorities in ways and means hearing | Today, National Cattlemen’s Beef Association (NCBA) member and chairman of the Texas Cattle Feeders Association (TCFA) Robby Kirkland testified before the House Ways and Means Committee. |
In the hearing titled, American Trade Negotiation Priorities, Kirkland highlighted the benefits of past trade agreements for U.S. cattle producers and the need for greater access to foreign markets. This is also the time for the U.S. government to hold our trading partners accountable for unfair practices and non-equivalent food safety standards.

"U.S. cattle producers produce the highest quality beef in the world and benefit greatly from market-based, science-based, and rules-based trade policies. Unfortunately, in recent years our government stepped back from market access negotiations while our competitors negotiated robust trade agreements and gained a critical advantage in key markets where U.S. agricultural products face higher tariffs and a brick wall of non-tariff barriers", said TCFA Chairman and Texas cattle producer Robby Kirkland. "It is long past time for the U.S. to re-engage in trade talks to secure preferential access with our allies like the United Kingdom and in key markets in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the Middle East".

The U.S. cattle and beef industry has greatly benefitted from robust trade agreements that leveled the playing field for U.S. farmers and ranchers and improved many rural economies across our country. However, not all trade partners have lived up to their commitments and must be held accountable.

"We must ensure that any country that is granted access to the U.S. does not put U.S. consumers or the U.S. cattle herd at risk. This is a major concern with Brazil, Paraguay, and other countries who have a history of Foot-and-Mouth Disease and highly questionable records on food safety and animal health. We need Congress and President Trump to hold these trade partners accountable and ensure the safety of American consumers and our cattle herd. At the same time, we need to begin enforcing our trade agreement with Australia that was granted access to the U.S. market through our free trade agreement. For 20 years, Australia has exported nearly $29 billion of beef to the U.S. market, but we have been prohibited from selling $1 worth of U.S. beef in Australia. The 20-year delay in the approval of U.S. beef is completely unjustified because we are internationally recognized as having the highest food safety and animal health standards in the world. For years, we have been told by the Australian government that we are in the final stages of approval, yet we continue to see delays. U.S. cattle and beef do not pose a threat to Australian consumers and Australian livestock, and this is not how allies and trade partners should behave. All we are seeking is fair trade". added Kirkland.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-03-30 00:34:25 | 2025-08-06 03:17:54 | Details Edit Delete | |
6669 | US: Value, taste and health outweigh price for chicken purchases | Chicken is positioned to satisfy Gen X and Millennials as they assume the grocery buying power. |
Ninety-five percent of the U.S. consumers said that price per pound and overall price are more important or as important compared to a year ago when purchasing fresh chicken, according to research presented at the 2023 Chicken Marketing Summit. Fresh chicken is the protein of choice because it delivers value, taste and contributes to a healthful lifestyle, even as consumers react to inflationary pressures.

The National Chicken Council (NCC) and WATT Global Media presented the results of a study that focused on current and anticipated U.S. consumer behavior, specifically, consumption of fresh chicken. Circana provided supporting data from its retail databases. The results suggested several opportunities for chicken to maintain market share.

The study was commissioned by NCC and conducted online by Circana June 22 – 27, 2023, among 520 U.S. adults. Funding was provided by Elanco Animal Health, Evonik Animal Nutrition, NCC and WATT Global Media.

Generations differ

Younger consumers have different drivers for choosing chicken. Organic and antibiotic-free claims are more important to younger consumers compared to a year ago, while Boomers place less importance on these.

"More than three-quarters of Millennials reported that chicken is their favorite protein in a home-cooked meal", reported Joyce Neth, Watt Global Media.

In addition, organic and antibiotic-free claims are more important purchase drivers for Millennials, even as they face rising prices with other purchases. "Millennials and Gen Z are organic natives,” said Neth, "they have grown up with organics’ halo of ‘better for me and better for the planet’ and are willing to make tradeoffs in other purchases to buy organic chicken".

According to data provided by Erkin Peksoz, Circana, this commitment to organic chicken is reflected in increased dollar sales and decreased volume. Peksoz said, "organic share has been declining since first quarter 2022 but is still above 2020 levels".

Peksoz presented data that shows that Millennials over-index for chicken and under-index for pork, beef and turkey compared to Boomers. "Chicken is well-positioned with the generations that will soon have more income to spend", he added.

Eating at home

In the survey, 95% of those surveyed say they will eat at home more or the same amount in the next six months compared to previous six months. Further, 78% say they will continue or increase eating at the homes of friends and family and 50% will host dinner parties at their home.

Chances are high that these meal occasions will include fresh chicken. Weekday dinner is the most popular meal occasion including fresh chicken. 84% have prepared a weekday dinner with fresh chicken, followed by 62% preparing weekend dinner with fresh chicken. Top reasons cited for cooking fresh chicken are easy, delicious and healthy.

Expanding the definition of health

In this year’s findings, health was among the top reasons selected, yet nutritious and leaner were selected by fewer respondents.

"While we typically associate those characteristics with health, it’s clear that consumers are seeing more than those aspects as part of 'healthy'", said Neth. “Other research has shown that today’s consumers view health as overall well-being, including mental health, minimizing stress and occasionally indulging cravings. Many recipes for 'comfort food' include chicken".

Telling the sustainability story

Among a list of attributes, just four of ten respondents said they associated "more environmentally friendly and sustainable than other types of protein" with chicken. However, twice as many, or eight in ten, associated that attribute with plant-based meat alternatives.

"Chicken has a great sustainability story that must be told so that consumers, particularly those organic natives, can see this is another way that chicken aligns with their values", said Tom Super, National Chicken Council.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-08-16 00:15:03 | 2025-08-06 03:18:14 | Details Edit Delete | |
4966 | ASF outbreak in Haiti | The disease has spread from the Dominican Republic to the other nation on the same islands. |
Pig producers in the Americas are in a state of alert after an ASF outbreak was reported this week in Haiti, a country that shares the same island with the Dominican Republic. Apparently, the disease has crossed the border to the neighboring nation, infecting pigs in small farms.
As major players in the global market, Brazil, the US, Canada and Mexico have intensified their measures to prevent ASF from entering their borders. USDA has placed stricter rules for the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico, territories under the American flag, while the other countries have increased border controls for products of animal origin and launched communication campaigns for pig farmers and the general public.
"The Ministry of Agriculture went ahead of the agenda and intensified inspections at the country's main ports of entry, preventing the entry of meat products. Going further, the Ministry of Agriculture established legislation even more restrictive to the entry of these products, signed an intercountry emergency agreement for the prevention of PSA and installed a national campaign that raised awareness, in an effort that included the ABPA, the auditors tax authorities and other entities in the sector," said Sulivan Alves, Technical Director with the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
21 associations from 18 American countries are working together to prevent the virus from spreading across Americas.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-09-22 11:28:23 | 2025-08-06 03:18:17 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2867 | Statistic data shows improvement in Welsh lamb carcase classification | More and more farmers are producing meat to the highest market specification, according to the data presented by Welsh processors for 2018. |
Statistic data released recently by Welsh processors for last year shows improvement in Welsh lamb carcase classification, with more and more farmers producing meat to the highest market specification. During processing, lambs are graded according to the EUROP classification grid, which denotes whether animals meet the correct conformation and fat coverage.
The statistics released by Welsh processors for 2018 show a positive performance by the industry. This includes significant reductions in the numbers of animals which were over-fat and continued increases in the numbers which hit the highest desired conformation.
68.1% of all lambs from Welsh abattoirs hit the sought-after 2 or 3L fat grades, up from 64.5% the previous year. In terms of conformation, 40.2% fell into the highest ‘E’ or ‘U’ classes (up from 37.9% in 2017) with only 11.2% classified in the lower ‘O’ or ‘P’ ranges.

"The prevalence of carcases with less fat coverage could be partly due to producers presenting their lambs earlier following the dry summer weather conditions of 2018 and limited availability of forage. However, the figures on both fat and conformation also show that Welsh farmers are focusing on what the modern consumer requires and adapting their practices accordingly. Different outlets, such as supermarkets, export and catering, may require different types of lambs. In order to achieve the highest return, farmers will ensure that the lambs sold are the correct type for those markets", explained Glesni Phillips, Data Analyst at Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).
In the last couple of years, the trend was to achieve higher grades and that reflects the increased use of rams and ewes with superior genetics for conformation traits, she added. Also, farmers have benefited from HCC’s Livestock Selection courses which increase understanding of the needs of the modern consumer.

| 1 | Industry | 2019-05-09 07:38:02 | 2025-08-06 03:18:36 | Details Edit Delete | ||

7785 | Italian buyers savour the true taste of Welsh Lamb | A delegation of Italian meat specialists from one of the nation’s largest wholesalers have visited Wales to learn more about the high-quality production of PGI Welsh Lamb. |
20 meat specialists from Gesco- Amadori, a leading Italian meat distributor, joined Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) on an inward mission to Wales. The group spent two days in Wales, visiting a processing plant, as well as seeing firsthand how PGI Welsh Lamb is reared on farm. The group was also able to enjoy Welsh Lamb as part of a cooking demonstration and Welsh Lamb masterclass.

HCC’s Consumer Executive Elwen Roberts provided a Welsh Lamb masterclass, demonstrating several dishes which were created especially for the Italian market, including: mustard and herb crumbed rack of Welsh Lamb served with roasted mediterranean vegetables and a red wine jus; Welsh Lamb cannon and pesto canapes and a pulled Welsh Lamb shoulder served with mozzarella, flatbreads and fresh leaves.

The delegation was able to see the high production standards employed by Welsh farmers when they joined Dai Charles Evans on his farm in Silian, near Lampeter in mid Wales. Mr Evans runs a flock of 500 breeding ewes as well as a herd of stabilizer cattle. The 5th generation beef and sheep farmer, who farms in partnership with his wife and son, gave a tour of the farm where he talked the Italian guests through his production systems, including their outdoor grass-based system and his successful breeding programme.

HCC’s Market Development Lead, Jason Craig, explained: “Italy is a key export market for Welsh Lamb and we were very pleased to facilitate this inward mission for these important customers. The delegation was impressed with the green and natural landscape in which Welsh Lamb is reared and particularly enjoyed the demonstrations and tasters provided by Elwen.

"Showing buyers first-hand the dedication and craft which goes into producing high-quality Welsh Lamb has been a key element of HCC’s export strategy and allows our customers to connect with how special our product really is. I would especially like to thank Dai Charles Evans for being a fantastic host to our Italian guests and helping us bring the story of Welsh Lamb to life".
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-10-08 00:05:47 | 2025-08-06 03:19:02 | Details Edit Delete | |
2698 | UK farming unions: Secure a negotiated Brexit deal! | An extension of the Article 50 deadline will be necessary in order to avoid a catastrophe for British farming and food production. |
Leaders of the four farming unions in the UK, NFU President Minete Batters, NFU Cymru President John Davies, NFU Scotland President Andrew McCornick and Ulster Farmers’ Union President Ivor Ferguson have issued a joint statement following the Prime Minister’s defeat on her Brexit deal in the House of Commons.
"The outcome of the vote means there is no realistic possibility of achieving an orderly departure from the EU on March 29. A no deal exit from the EU would be a catastrophe for British farming and food production. Therefore some sort of extension of the Article 50 deadline will be necessary. It is critical that the Government and MPs identify a clear strategy to secure Parliament’s support for a negotiated Brexit deal between the UK and the EU and use any extension of Article 50 constructively. We cannot simply delay the prospect of no deal", says the statement.
On March 12, Theresa May’s plan to exit the European Union was rejected by Brtish Parliament with a 391 to 242 vote. There are 16 days until the deadline for leaving the European Union and the uncertainty regarding the way Britain is going to exit the EU has already consequences on farming businesses. "It is time for MPs to consider the concessions they will need to accommodate to support a deal that finally brings to an end the enormous and damaging uncertainty that is already undermining our food and farming sectors", the four presidents said. The Parliament is going to decide today if the UK is to leave the EU under no-deal scenario.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-03-13 10:07:23 | 2025-08-06 03:19:17 | Details Edit Delete | ||
6327 | UK: Meat dishes remain a firm favourite in the out-of-home market | Spend on meat free meals in the out of home market totalled £3.7bn in the year ending 22 January 2023, according to an analysis made by AHDB with data from Kantar. However, meat free meals still account for a relatively small proportion of spend in the out of home market, at 15.1%, highlighting how important meat, fish and poultry (MFP) is for driving value out of home. |
The £3.7bn spent on meat free represents an increase of 23.1% year-on-year, slightly ahead of spend growth for MFP, at 17.3%. Penetration (the proportion of individuals consuming these meals) had previously been the key driver of growth for meat free, however this has now seen a plateau, with price driving growth, predominantly linked to inflation.

The proportion of households buying into meat free in the past year was 70.6% (52 w/e 22 Jan 2023). It’s key to remember that these meat-free meals incorporate dishes that just don’t include meat, but are still everyday meals (such as cheese sandwiches). Despite this, the penetration for MFP is still much higher, at 90.6%.

When it comes to the top dishes consumed, most are still MFP-driven, with 97% of burgers being meat/poultry based. Nearly nine in ten Asian-cuisine meals include MFP, while 80% of Indian-cuisine meals had MFP. In addition, repeat rates for meat-free are much lower, at 40%, than the 96% seen for MFP. This highlights how consumers find MFP to be a reliable option when out of home.

Amidst the cost-of-living backdrop, consumers will inevitably look for ways to save money. Vegetarian meals are competitively priced, but plant-based dishes do come at a premium to pork, beef and chicken.

Therefore, the main area of risk for the meat category, in the out of home market, isn’t meat alternatives, but rather dishes that are vegetarian by nature, such as cheese sandwiches and meat-free pizzas.

Health continues to be a key driver of Veganuary participation, and meat reduction overall. However, there isn’t a January increase in meat free meals, instead there are signs people choose to focus their Veganuary efforts in-home.

Once of the key differences between MFP and meat free meals in the out of home market is where they are consumed or bought. MFP meals are more likely to be bought in quick service restaurants, while coffee shops are an area where meat free takes a bigger share, linked to the role of vegetarian sandwiches.

As a consequence, within meat free, coffee shops and cafes have gained at the lunch occasion. However, people are still more likely to consume MFP for their main meal, which is typically a more expensive, bigger occasion. For MFP to maintain its importance in the OOH market, opportunities lie in further menu innovation.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-04-09 00:10:19 | 2025-08-06 03:19:36 | Details Edit Delete | |
8402 | Germany is once again completely free of foot-and-mouth disease | All of Germany is officially free of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD). In mid-March, the World Organization for Animal Health (WOAH) had already reinstated the foot-and-mouth disease (FMD)-free status without vaccination for the vast majority of Germany. |
As the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) announced on April 14, 2025, in a letter to associations, the WOAH has now also approved Germany's application for recognition of the regained FMD-free status for the containment zone in Brandenburg and Berlin. This means that all trade restrictions are lifted for this containment zone, which was established around the outbreak farm, and the free movement of animals and goods can resume without restrictions. At the same time, the WOAH status of FMD-free without vaccination has been reinstated for all of Germany since April 14, 2025.

Brandenburg's Minister of Agriculture, Hanka Mittelstädt, described the WOAH recognition as positive news for all livestock farmers in Brandenburg and throughout Germany in a press release. This success is the result of proven crisis management and consistent animal disease control. Despite this extremely positive development, Mittelstädt warned of the ongoing risk of a renewed infiltration of the animal disease - particularly through travel, food or animal transport. This risk has increased particularly due to the outbreaks in Slovakia and Hungary. The minister therefore appealed to livestock farmers to strictly adhere to biosecurity measures. Furthermore, farmers who employ staff from regions affected by FMD should ensure that they do not bring any food of animal origin with them.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-04-17 00:10:26 | 2025-08-06 03:19:48 | Details Edit Delete | |

That was 4.0% or 280,200 tons less than in the previous year. This means that domestic meat production has fallen for the seventh year in a row since its peak in 2016 (8.25 million tonnes). |
After comparatively slight declines from 2017, meat production fell by 8.1% in 2022 compared to the previous year, and now meat production fell again significantly in 2023. A total of 47.9 million pigs, cattle, sheep, goats and horses as well as 702.2 million chickens, turkeys and ducks were slaughtered in slaughterhouses in 2023.

Pork: slaughter volume decreased by 6.8%

With 43.8 million animals slaughtered in 2023, the number of pigs slaughtered fell by 7.0% or 3.3 million compared to the previous year. The number of pigs of domestic origin slaughtered fell by 7.7% to almost 42.3 million animals. The number of imported pigs slaughtered in German slaughterhouses, however, rose by 19.5% to 1.5 million animals.

In total, slaughterhouses produced around 4.2 million tons of pork in 2023. That was 6.8% or 306,500 tons less than in 2022.

Compared to the record year of 2016, around 1.4 million tonnes less pork were produced in 2023, which corresponds to a decline of over a quarter (-25.1%).

Beef: Slaughter volume at previous year's level

The number of cattle slaughtered commercially in 2023 fell by 0.3% to 3.0 million animals compared to 2022. However, as the average slaughter weights increased in all cattle categories, the slaughter volume increased slightly by +0.6% to 992,900 tonnes of beef.

Poultry meat: slaughter quantity increased by 1.4%

The amount of poultry meat produced increased by 1.4% to 1.6 million tons in 2023 compared to 2022. The main reason for the increase is the 1.1% increase in production of young broiler meat to 1.1 million tons. Turkey meat production increased by 2.7% to 417,000 tons.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-02-13 00:25:36 | 2025-08-06 03:19:49 | Details Edit Delete |
