4662 | IAWS. Demand and transparency | The experience of The Spanish White Pork sector in animal welfare has allowed it to anticipate the demands of administrations and consumers, and hence through the IAWS certification, it guarantees high standards in animal welfare and biosecurity, in order to satisfy consumers through maximum transparency. |
One of the best ways to demonstrate the constant demand to which The Spanish White Pork Sector self-submits and transmit it in a transparent way is through the “WELFARE COMMITMENT CERTIFIED” seal, where certified operators not only guarantee animal welfare, but also food safety, animal handling, animal health and biosecurity, being the first seal in animal welfare which performs a more global and holistic approach interrelating all these matters with each other.
The Animal Welfare and Biosafety Technical Regulation INTERPORC ANIMAL WELFARE SPAIN (IAWS) is the regulation that establishes the requirements to be met by companies. Evaluated and validated by The Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare, not only determines compliance with European regulations but also establishes more demanding requirements, increasing its demand and establishing itself as a certification with the highest standards in animal welfare.
In order to further protect and provide a higher level of demand for animal welfare, the IAWS Technical Regulation considers that some of the requirements described in order to obtain the certification are more critical or significant in relation to physical condition and animal health. Therefore, it establishes that the non-compliance or the unsatisfactory result of those requirements leads to the suspension of the certification process, regardless of the possible compliance with the rest of the requirements, or the need to implement a corrective action plan.
All the requirements established must be met. Consequently, it is necessary for companies to show a corrective action plan subsequently evaluated by independent certification bodies, which are the ones that decide the effectiveness and implementation of these actions to determine or not the award of the certificate.
Transparency is also an important factor. For this reason, on our website, the certified operators of the different groups (farms, slaughterhouses and industry) can be found beside our IAWS Technical Regulation so that anyone can see this information updated.
In short, the experience of The Spanish White Pork sector in animal welfare has allowed it to anticipate the demands of administrations and consumers, and hence through the IAWS certification, it guarantees high standards in animal welfare and biosecurity, in order to satisfy consumers through maximum transparency.
For further information, please check our website: https://www.bienestaranimalcertificado.com/animal-welfare-certified/
| 1 | Industry | 2021-05-04 12:42:03 | 2025-07-28 19:59:44 | Details Edit Delete | ||
606 | New sales strategy for WH Group: No more cheap products! | The company is ready to give up the high-temperature sterilized meat products |
One of the biggest meat processors in the world, WH Group China, is taking a new approach to the market by dumping the high-temperature sterilized meat products, informs Asian Nikkei Review.

This type of products, especially sausages, was promoted in China for the long shelf life, despite the fact that the nutritional value was low. Sales reported in the last three years and a half demonstrated that ready to eat sausages made by WH Group were a drag on the company revenue falling three consecutive years from 2014 to 2016, and making a new plunge of 0.37 %, that equals 1.04 billion dollars, in the first semester of 2017.

It is no surprise that Wan Long, the chairman of WH Group, decided to turn to the slaughtering business, a long key profit generator for the Chinese company along with the selling of fresh meat. WH Group chairman stated the last November that, in the long term, the company wants to reach a number 100 million pigs slaughtered annually, a seven-time fold increase reported to the current level. At that level, WH Group would be producing roughly 10% of the world's hogs.

That could be a real kick for the company as the Beijing new agricultural policy has already shut down 6,929 small private slaughterhouses since the end of 2013. "It is a historic opportunity for us to grow our slaughtering business", explained Wan Long

According to data collected by the Organization of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD), China is the world's largest market for pork, consuming half of the world's supply with per capita consumption of 30.8kg in 2016. Pork represents 60% of the meat consumed in China. A decline in the prices of pork in 2017 accelerated the sales of fresh meat for WH Group which were up 26% in the second quarter of 2017 and 38% in the third quarter.

Still, the profit margin for the company's fresh pork business was 2.3% in the first three quarters of last year, compared with a 21.2% profit margin for packaged meats which prompted WH Group to invest heavily in new product development of packaged meats with a focus on frozen products and snack foods and to open 7 new research and development centers across China.

The interest in this sector made the company buy, in September, two packaged-meat producers in Romania for an undisclosed sum, a month after it bought three companies from Poland's Pini Group. Also, WH Group is the owner of Smithfield, U.S.'s biggest pork producer.

| 1 | Industry | 2018-01-15 10:59:03 | 2025-07-29 03:22:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||

847 | Online sales will influence the livestock production | By 2025, 20% of the meat delivered in America's houses will be sold online and will include niche products. |
One of the latest reports of Rabobank talks about a new revolution in the food industry, one that is shaped by the e-commerce and it will influence the livestock production.
"Changes in where consumers buy groceries when they buy, and what they buy will inevitably force changes all the way through the supply chain. Nowhere will these changes be more dramatic than in perishables such as meat", considers RaboResearch Food & Agribusiness Senior Protein Analyst Don Close.
There is a constant competition between IT giants to gain a bigger market share on online grocery sales and it seems to have started a few years ago with Amazon buying Whole Foods for $13.1 billion dollars.
Don Close predicts that 20% of food for in-home consumption will be purchased online by 2025. That includes traditional groceries and complete meals packaged in the meal kit category. In those categories will enter also niche products as prime, natural, NHTC, organic, grass-fed or antibiotic-free. "These niche desires will result in additional demands on cattle quality and production specifications, which will lead to a wider price spread across all classes of cattle, as well as a more detailed premium and discount schedule,” Close says. “These changes are indicative of a permanent change in the way food reaches the average American consumer—and if the beef industry is to ward off any further decline in beef consumption, it must embrace these changes and make beef an integral part of the consumption experience, regardless of where it is purchased", explained Close in the report called "Food Fight! Online and Brick & Mortar Battle for Business. How Can Beef Ensure a Seat at the Table?".
| 1 | Retail | 2018-02-26 07:00:22 | 2025-07-29 08:27:00 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4679 | Saudi Arabia bans poultry imports from Brazil | 11 plants are targeted in a unilateral move that will be applied from May 23. |
One of the long-time importers of Brazilian poultry products, Saudi Arabia, has decided to ban poultry imports from 11 plants located in the South American country. The decision is to be applied on May 23. A joint statement from Brazil's Agriculture and Foreign ministries last week confirmed that there were no warnings or explanations for this decision. "The Brazilian government was surprised and dismayed by Saudi Arabia's decision to suspend 11 poultry exporting units. There was no prior contact from the Saudi authorities, nor did they give any motivation or justification to support the suspensions", said the joint statement.JBS, the world's largest meat company, confirmed that it was affected by the ban but declined to disclose how many plants had been targeted by the decision, according to Reuters. The Saudi Food and Drug Authority said imports from seven JBS plants will be suspended as of May 23. BRF, la largest chicken meat processor in Brazil, declared that none of its units were affected by the ban.
The Brazilian government said it has initiated talks with Saudi Arabia regarding the bans. The Brazilian government said it learned of the suspensions through the publication of a new list of Brazilian plants permitted to export to Saudi Arabia.
| 1 | Market | 2021-05-12 12:48:28 | 2025-07-30 07:49:59 | Details Edit Delete | ||
6411 | The role of the Spanish white pork sector with zero hunger | Worldwide, the Spanish white pork sector provides an affordable protein with high nutritional value, especially important in developing countries, where it is a source of wealth that allows the economic survival of many families, especially the most vulnerable, and contributes to compliance with SDG 2, zero hunger, and fights against malnutrition. |
One of the main challenges that humanity must face in the 21st century is to respond in an effective, sustainable and healthy way to the increasing demand for food by a growing population. It is currently estimated that the world population is about seven billion people, and it is expected that by 2050, we will be almost ten billion people.

In this sense, Spanish pork companies produce 5.07 million tons of meat, of which 2.93 million tons are sold to more than 111 international markets, to which must be added the European Union countries. In addition, more than 4 billion consumers around the world have white pork products from Spain at their disposal, being a source of pride for the sector.

Also, the Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC) contributes to raising awareness about food loss and waste and has made meat and meat products donations to soup kitchens. In fact, fresh and frozen pork barely accounts for 0.65% of the share of food waste in Spanish homes. This makes it the line of products with the lowest proportion of waste in the Spanish food system, based on data from the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food prepared by INTERPORC.

Thanks to the incorporation of innovations and continuous improvements in the activity of all the stakeholders of the sectoral food chain, as well as the low waste produced by their products, the Spanish white pork sector plays a fundamental role for the whole of the world food system producing healthy, quality food at an affordable price, and doing so while protecting the planet and caring for our animals.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-11 00:30:24 | 2025-07-30 01:27:42 | Details Edit Delete | |
3148 | The shortage of skilled personnel is blocking the expansion plans for many Romanian food producers. |
One of the major problems faced by the meat industry in Romania, as most of the industries from us, is the acute lack of skilled personnel due to the abolition of vocational schools. A solution to this crisis can be offered by the educational system if the authorities are thinking of reopening vocational schools, believes Eugen Capr?, general manager of CARNEXPO, industry’s largest trade fair in Southeast Europe.

Agriculture and food are two industries that, although similar, are quite different, especially from the labor force perspective. Agriculture needs staff, largely unqualified, while the food industry needs personnel with certain skills. The abolition, 10 years ago, of vocational schools, has led to a dramatic decrease in the number of skilled personnel in the market.

The modification of the education law, in 2011, which meant the re-establishment of these forms of education, failed to restore many of these schools in the food industry. Also, the migration of the workforce to the West European markets has created a shortage of personnel in many sectors.

“There is a huge need for specialists in this industry. For the past 30 years, no farmers have been trained, for example. We are simply disadvantaged because we have no education in the field. The vocational schools must be re-established urgently if we are to save anything. It is important that young people also want to specialize in this field, and here we have to work to change an outdated mentality. On the other hand, the economic agents must also show openness, be willing to accept students for internships. We already have some examples of processors that do this, which has given less advance to the labor market in this area ”, declared Eugen Capr?, general manager, CARNEXPO.

Many producers complain that they cannot expand because they cannot find people to hire. Official data shows that 9.7 million Romanians are working or living abroad.

“Wages in the industry have increased. I have talked with producers who are willing to give 1,000 euros to skilled butchers, but even so, they don’t find specialized people. Many employees qualify for the job, and then leave the West for a salary of 2,000 euros, even if half of it is spent on rent and transportation. What our employers need to do is improve the way we communicate with people. Talk to them about the advantages and disadvantages of working away from home, so that everyone can make an informed decision. Our appeal is also addressed to the authorities, to whom we ask them to find solutions to motivate the Romanians to return to the country. We have the Polish model, which aims to reduce the income taxes for young people returning to work in the country. Another solution to cover the shortage of qualified personnel is technology. This automation is a normal trend after all. It may seem expensive in the first phase, but the investment will quickly prove profitable,” added Mr. Capr?.
| 1 | Events | 2019-08-01 06:35:50 | 2025-07-30 08:55:14 | Details Edit Delete | |||

1081 | Rhug Estate farm moves from organic lamb to exotic meat | Post-Brexit uncertainties forced a Welsh lamb producer to look for an unusual alternative. |
One of Wales's largest farms is moving its production from lamb to another product, quite unusual for the region: venison of Japanese sika deer.

The Rhug Estate is one of the UK's bigger producer of organic lamb but the uncertainty raised by the Brexit process is forcing the owner, Lord Newborough, to look for other alternatives.
A difficult access to the EU market could be disastrous for the Welsh producer, so the solution adopted was to import sika deer from Japan to ensure export markets like Hong Kong or Macau for this exotic meat. Also, the sika deer meat is delivered to some high-end restaurants in London, as BBC mentions.
"Is a highly saleable product that top chefs are calling for and a way to ensure the farms future after the Brexit", explained Lord Newborough. The venison is higher in vitamins and minerals such as omega 3 and significantly lower in fat than other meats.
The area where the farm is located has about 5,000 breeding ewes, producing approximately 7,500 lambs each year. Official figures showed that 93% of Welsh lamb exports were destined for the EU.
"A large percentage of the lambs we produce go to the continent but we don't know what the future will be exporting to the EU. We're very accustomed to sending it across the channel where it's readily received, but getting access to new markets is going to be difficult.
We are competing with the southern hemisphere where they produce a much bigger lamb and dominate markets like Singapore and the Middle East.", said the owner of Rhug Estate farm.
Gareth Jones, manager of the Rhug Estate, is also worried about the lack of perspective after Brexit. "The problem at the moment is that we don't know where we'll be going with Brexit and that's the biggest issue for the agricultural sector, not just in Wales but throughout the UK", he explained.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-12 10:08:57 | 2025-07-29 23:57:27 | Details Edit Delete | ||

3414 | UK retailer drops lamb from New Zealand | Waitrose announced that is going to sell only British lamb starting 2021. |
One UK retailer announced that is going to phase out lamb from New Zealand and sell only indigenous lamb. Waitrose intends to stop buying New Zealand lamb in the winter months from 2021 and focus only on British lamb, according to The Telegraph newspaper. By now, Waitrose has replaced all of the imports in its own-brand fresh chicken, pork, beef, eggs and liquid milk with products sourced exclusively from the UK.
"Waitrose & Partners has a long history of supporting and sourcing from local producers. The decision to commit to 100% British lamb all year is a continuation of that commitment and means that we can extend opportunity to our existing British lamb farmers while also potentially bringing new local producers into our supply chain as we continue to invest in British agriculture," explained Tor Harris, the Head of CSR, Health and Agriculture Department of the company.
A recent IGD/AHDB survey shows that 70% of the consumers in the UK would like to see more British food on supermarket shelves. 4000 | Egg consumption in Brazil to increase by 8% | Unemployment and low family income are forcing consumers to switch from meat to cheaper protein. |
Ongoing COVID-19 crisis has led to an unemployment rate of 12.4% in Brazil and lower household incomes and consumers are currently switching fast from meat to cheaper protein, such as eggs. According to data from the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), Brazilians should consume, on average, a record 250 eggs per person in 2020, equivalent to an increase of 8.5%, when compared to last year, and above the overall average of 235 eggs.
Since March, there was a constant increased demand for eggs, reaching in some Brazilian states at 30%. For some of the egg producers it was easy to redirect orders from restaurants, now closed, to the retail, while others had to stop exports.
"Increasing the production of eggs does not happen overnight. But as we had a retraction in the consumption of restaurants, we managed to adjust our production in order to meet this increase in demand. For that, it was necessary to quickly adapt the production lines to contain the direct impacts on logistics and packaging. We also stopped exports so that we could prioritize the increase in domestic consumption of eggs," explained Leandro Pinto, president of Mantiqueira group.
| 1 | Market | 2020-07-31 09:04:47 | 2025-07-29 22:01:21 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2113 | 9% increase in the Australian beef exports | The drought has raised the number of slaughterings but the carcase weights are down. |
Ongoing drought and a poor rainfall outlook made that the forecast for 2018 Australian beef production to be 6% up on 2017 at 2.3 million tonnes carcase weight (cwt), according to Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) Cattle Industry Projections October update.
Elevated levels of adult cattle slaughter throughout winter and early spring has driven the increase, with Australia’s national adult cattle slaughter for 2018 forecast to reach 7.8 million head, 9% higher than 2017.
"Despite poor prospects for pastures entering into 2019, slaughter numbers will begin to be constrained by a shrinking pool of available cattle. The female slaughter rate has risen to levels not seen since the last drought in 2015, though notably, this time off a lower base herd, which will have repercussions for cattle supply and production in coming years.
Typically, the Australian cattle herd contracts when the proportion of female slaughter exceeds 47% of total slaughter – a threshold first surpassed in May and the female contribution to the kill has increased since. The high percentage of females contributing to slaughter continues to put pressure on national average carcase weights. Projected national carcase weights have now been revised downwards, to 290kg/head for 2018.", explained Scott Tolmie, MLA’s Market Intelligence Manager.
Driven by high demand in Asian markets and a soft Aussie dollar exports are expected to increase by 9% in 2018, said the analysis. "Increased beef production, a softer Australian dollar and robust demand fundamentals, particularly in established Asian markets, has underpinned a 9% increase in forecast beef exports in 2018, to 1.1 million tonnes shipped weight (swt). Despite increasing global competition, beef exports for the calendar year-to-September grew 12% year-on-year, to 840,500 tonnes swt. On the back of record grain-fed cattle turnoff, exports to Japan and Korea have recorded increases of 7% and 15%, respectively. Exports to China in the first nine months of 2018 surged 55% year-on-year, while shipments to the United States were slightly down, heavily impacted by increasing domestic production.", added Mr Tolmie.

| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-29 07:12:54 | 2025-07-28 16:53:06 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4977 | Online shopping changes the outlook for the packaging industry | 43% of consumers feel guilty about ordering items online which arrive with too much packaging or what they feel is unsustainable packaging. |
Online shopping has become an important trend among European consumers and new habits in selecting not only the items desired but also the packaging raise concerns for the food industry and for the packaging sector as well.
85% of people want to buy products which use as little packaging as possible, because of the impact unsustainable packaging has on our planet. Shopping online and being mindful of sustainability were around before the pandemic, but these trends have been accelerated over the past year and a half, with new behaviours relating to eCommerce are continually evolving. 64% of Europeans shopped more online during the Covid-19 pandemic, and 89% say they intend to shop as much or more online after restrictions have ended.
Sustainability is likely to continue to influence consumer buying decisions, but cost may limit choice substantially. Ideally, such barriers should be removed to enable all consumers to make sustainable packaging choices. In a recent survey, 61% of consumers expressed that they had felt overwhelmed by the amount of packaging items they received when shopping online. 43% of adults in Europe think that keeping packaging to a minimum is important, whereas 41% think that the sector should prioritise recyclable packaging.
"43% of consumers feel guilty about ordering items online which arrive with too much packaging or what they feel is unsustainable packaging. 'Packaging guilt’ has meant that 64% of shoppers are prepared to change where they shop in favour of using less packaging.

In the long-term, this means that brands and retailers who do not act sustainably risk losing both their reputation and their customers. Brands and retailers may also be affected by high-profile anti-packaging campaigns which directly impact their reputation with negative PR. But brands do have a choice – either they resist, which is likely to cost them customers and revenue, or they embrace sustainability as a competitive advantage in a rapidly-evolving market," said Summer Bramall in a post for Sealpac UK and partners.
New trends that emerged in the European packaging market are as follow:

- Sustainability and recyclability of packaging continues to be important to consumers, especially for eCommerce purchases, where consumers have little choice in packaging options
- Consumers are passionate about reduced packaging and are prepared to change their shopping habits to support reduced packaging alternatives, so brands should be looking to produce packaging that is easy to break down and dispose of/recycle
- Recycling and sustainability information is best advertised on product packaging for consumer convenience
- Brand packaging needs to stand out to be effective in retail environments as consumers are spending less time instore.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-09-28 07:43:03 | 2025-07-30 07:45:35 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3687 | Coronavirus impact in China is changing consumer habits |
Online shopping is developing fast in China, as the recent lockdown in several cities across the country and the disruption in China's food supply chain have forced people to look for new ways to cover their basic needs. Ongoing social media analysis by B+LNZ suggests that consumers are “experimenting” with new recipes and looking to try cooking beef and lamb dishes in their homes.
They are also looking more closely at the health/nutrition benefits of food. However, New Zealand's exposure on the Chinese red meat market had a severe impact on the export figures in the first quarter of the year, as disruption to the supply chain due to labour shortages in China made it more challenging to get products from the ports into further processing establishments and retail and port clearance times have also been slower than usual.
At the same time, there have also been some issues with the availability of cold storage in China. Cold stores were already fairly full with Chinese New Year stock, prior to the outbreak and are now are at full capacity in key ports, such as Shanghai and Tianjin. However, there are indications some ports such as Dalian, Qingdao, Liaoning, Xiamen, Guangzhou and Shenzhen still have some space for refrigerated containers.
Still, shipments of meat to China are running low as logistics and transportation capacities are only 80% functional at this time and the Chinese authorities are sending in the market meat from the state reserves to keep the prices under control.
"Unfortunately, the supply chain disruption impacting China ports/logistics is beginning to have downstream impacts on key transit ports in Asia that are essential to get products to other markets such as the Middle East and the European Union.

Some shipping lines are not confident they will be able to unload containers in China and are choosing to by-pass the country in favour of other Asian ports," said B+LNZ in a press release.
The impact was reflected in the prices and the industry is currently redirecting some of the products to other markets in a bid to cover the losses reported in the first two months of the year. "Product is also being diverted to other markets where possible and there has been an increase in trade to markets such as the United Kingdom, the EU, the United States and Saudi Arabia for sheepmeat and the US, Canada, Taiwan and Indonesia for beef," added B+LNZ.
Nevertheless, the ongoing coronavirus outbreaks in regions such as Europe and North America are expected to create another shock-wave for the producers.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-03-13 07:42:52 | 2025-07-29 10:52:36 | Details Edit Delete | |||

Thanks to this new habits, meat consumption has dropped to 64 kilos a year from 69 in 2010.

Meat has been replaced by fruit and vegetarian food, according to the study. The shift in diet is seen as a reflection of changing lifestyles and influence from abroad.

Big companies have been forced to rethink the way they sell food by newcomers to the market, many of them family-run small and mid-sized enterprises. At the same time, the vegan movement is slowly gaining momentum among the locals, vegetarians and vegans being represented now by 10% of the Germans, twice as many than reported in 2006.

At this moment, 1 in 10 new products released in Germany is labeled as vegan.

(Photo source: Pinterest/Bing Bang News)

| 1 | Retail | 2018-01-29 07:00:00 | 2025-07-30 06:02:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
