4991 Irish breeding sheep flock on the rise Breeding inventory is up 1.4% from a year ago, while sheep for slaughter figures are down 1.4%
The latest results from the Irish June Livestock Survey show that the total number of sheep in Ireland rose by 1.4% year-on-year to 5.6 million. This growth was driven by expansion in the breeding flock, specifically ewes aged two years and over. The numbers of younger ewes also increased but to a lesser extent.
On the other hand, the number of sheep for slaughter fell by 1.4% (37,000 head) to 2.7 million.
"All other things being equal we would have expected for there to be a rise in the number of lambs, reflecting the increase in ewes. While this may raise some questions over the accuracy of the survey, the England June survey results record a similar trend. Industry reports also suggest competition for store lambs is hot due to demand out stripping supply," commented Hannah Clarke, Livestock Analyst at AHDB.
    Industry 2021-10-07 10:33:02 2025-07-13 09:45:23 Details Edit Delete
4545 Vietnam to increase pig production by 12% Breeding animal imports and stricter biosecurity measures adopted in large-scale farms should lead to the recovery of the sector.
Large pig imports, mainly from Thailand, may lead to the recovery of the Vietnamese pig herd in 2021, according to a Rabobank report. According to the bank, pig production in the country is expected to increase from 8% to 12% this year, even though the country has recorded outbreaks of African swine fever in some provinces in the winter.
Analysts believe the impact of the disease is less in the face of previous outbreaks, although it still threatens small family farms. In large-scale properties, the risks of the disease are already seen as minor, due to biosecurity measures adopted in the last two years.
Vietnam's sow herd has steadily increased but it is estimated that a large number of animals are still crossbred females, which have lower productivity than F1 females. This situation is expected to continue in 2021, as it will take some time to increase the F1 sow herd. In 2020, Vietnam imported GGP breeders and breeding stock, the latter mainly coming from Thailand. In total, imports of breeding herds reached 242,000 heads in 2020, compared to 3,000 heads in 2019. Imports represent less than 10% of the total sow herd. The bank expects imports of breeding herds to continue in 2021.
    Industry 2021-03-18 07:16:24 2025-07-12 07:49:27 Details Edit Delete

8312 President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrives in Japan to open new markets for Brazilian beef Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva arrived in Tokyo this week to begin a three-day official visit, during which he will be received by the emperors and the prime minister, as part of a trip aimed at expanding markets for Brazil.
During his official visit between Monday and Wednesday, Lula will seek an agreement that would allow Brazilian beef to enter the Japanese market and explore the possibility of opening negotiations for a free trade agreement with Mercosur.

Specifically, the Brazilian government will attempt to convince Japan to send a technical mission of health authorities to Brazil to inspect the country's beef production conditions and lift the current restrictions on Latin American products in the world's third-largest meat buyer.

Japan was Brazil's third-largest trading partner in Asia last year, with trade totaling some $11 billion and a Brazilian surplus of $148 million.

The official visit comes at a time when Brazil is beginning to look for markets to direct products that may be restricted in the United States due to President Donald Trump's tariff policy.

This also comes at a time when the Latin American giant is seeking alternatives to reduce its dependence on China, the largest destination for its exports, amid the uncertainty generated by the current trade war.

On Tuesday, Lula will meet with Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako.

That same day, the emperors will host a dinner at the Imperial Palace to honor the Brazilian progressive leader and some of his entourage, which includes eleven ministers and the presidents of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre, and the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta.

On Wednesday, the Brazilian president will participate in the Brazil-Japan Business Forum with business leaders from both countries and will meet with Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba, who will also host him at a dinner at Akasaka Palace.

Ishiba and Lula are expected to agree on an "action plan" aimed at strengthening various areas of bilateral cooperation, including security and investment, according to diplomatic sources.

After his visit to Japan, Lula will travel to Hanoi on Thursday for an official visit starting Friday. He will meet with Vietnamese Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh, who visited Brazil last year to begin talks aimed at establishing a strategic partnership between the two countries.

Also on Friday, the progressive leader will meet with Vietnamese President Luong Cuong.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-03-25 00:35:05 2025-07-13 01:31:29 Details Edit Delete
245 Brazil regains market share in global poultry trade Brazilian poultry exports reported a 9% drop in the second quarter of 2017 because of the meat scandal that broke in March. Still, the latest monthly export figures are matching last year's record levels, which indicates that the poultry industry has started to recover, Brazil regaining market share in global trade, according to Rabobank's latest Poultry Quarterly report.

The Brazilian meat scandal 'carne fraca' has had a major impact on the poultry exports in the first half of 2017. However, after the wave of temporary import bans, the investigation showed that just 0.5% of Brazil's total processing capacity had been involved in the fraud. Negative impacts on the poultry exports began to fade at the start of the second half of this year, thanks to the considerable effort invested by the Brazilian authorities in providing transparent information to importers.

Brazilian poultry exports in July were around 5% above July 2016, by volume. But during the first seven months of 2017, exports declined by 5% year-over-year.

Analysts at Rabobank expect that the poultry exports will recover during the second half of this year, finishing 2017 slightly above the levels from the previous year. Moreover, "preliminary numbers for the first three weeks of August already indicate a small increase, compared to last year."

But Brazil is not out of the woods yet. According to Rabobank, China announced an anti-dumping investigation into imports of poultry from Brazil. And although the full investigation is expected to take as long as a year, the Chinese authorities could apply a provisional anti-dumping tax after the preliminary analysis in the next two to four months.

Overall, the Rabobank analysts expect the poultry production from Brazil to report a slight increase this year, taking into account that currently there are ongoing low corn and soybean prices which will continue to provide low feed costs and this aspect will support the industry in sustaining positive margins.
    Market 2017-09-27 10:36:13 2025-07-13 12:24:09 Details Edit Delete
99 Brazilian poultry exports to rise by 5% in 2018 Brazilian poultry exports are expected to grow by 5% in 2018 due to an increase in demand for chicken meat. Also, many countries have been affected by Avian Influenza outbreaks, which led to bans on poultry and poultry products imports worldwide, according to USDA's 2017 Poultry and Products Annual Report.

Although, Brazil's poultry exports suffered a lot from the meat scandal that broke in March 2017, "poultry exporters are cautiously optimistic that Brazil has recovered its reputation due to MAPA’s changes in their export system," the report shows.

During the first semester of 2017, the bans related to poultry and poultry products that Brazil received from other countries had an enormous impact on exports, especially on the exports destined for the markets in the Middle East and Asia. However, the report says, while exports decreased in terms of volume for CY 2017, "the value increased by 7% reflecting high world prices."

USDA analysts forecast broiler production is set to rise in Brazil by 2.6% to 13.8 million tons in 2018 from 13.44 million tons in 2017, and are expected to grow by 6.45% compared to last year's 12.91 tons.

In addition, USDA expects record corn and soya crops, which will result in better profit margins during 2018 and lower feed costs, "albeit an adverse exchange rate," and taking into account that corn and soyabean crops account for nearly 70% of the cost of producing broilers.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2017-08-22 17:18:36 2025-07-12 22:34:05 Details Edit Delete

Still, in value, this was 13.8% lower compared with the figures reported in July 2017, when Brazilian pork exports totaled $122.7 million.

Exports between January and July totaled 293.7 thousand tons, 14.2% less than the 342.4 thousand tons shipped in the first seven months of last year. The revenue from sales reached $619.3 million, a result 28.2% lower than the $863 million obtained in 2017.

ABPA says that the situation regarding pork exports was the same as that of the chicken meat exports. Strong Chinese product purchases continue, reducing the impact of the Russian embargo on the Brazilian sector.

"Despite this, if we consider the average of the last two months combined, we see shipment volumes of 43.4 thousand tons, a level close to the average recorded in 2017, " Ricardo Santin, executive director of ABPA, explained.
    Industry 2018-08-04 11:39:51 2025-07-12 19:11:25 Details Edit Delete
