3496 Brazilian pork exports are up by 16.2% in 2018 Besides Asian countries, South American neighbors are an important destination for Brazilian pork.
The African swine fever (ASF) crisis in Asia has supported the Brazilian pork industry, generating a rise in exports of 16.2%, according to data presented by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).
More than 750,000 tons of pork were shipped over the last 12 months, up by 16.2% in volume. In terms of value, Brazilian pork exports in 2019 were worth $1.6 billion, 35.1% higher than the result of 2018, informs ABPA.
China was the main market, followed by Vietnam due to the serious crisis registered in both countries after ASF outbreaks. "The biosecurity crisis in Asia has reconfigured international trade in animal protein. China, which was the worst affected, expanded its Brazilian pork import capacity by enabling new plants in November 2019. This is one of the factors that should favor the increase in Brazilian sales in 2020, as the indicators of institutions like Rabobank demonstrate that this situation should last at least throughout the year, ”says Ricardo Santin, ABPA's executive director.
In South America, Uruguay was the main destination, with 40,480 tons imported, 12.8% higher compared to the 2018 balance. Chile also stood out, with imports of 44,540 tons (+28,9%). In Eastern Europe, Russia imported 35.280 tons. "We have grown our sales not only in Asia but in other importing regions such as South America. Our efforts will now be focused on strengthening these partnerships and finding new markets", completed Francisco Turra, ABPA's president.
    Industry 2020-01-07 06:26:56 2025-08-02 13:00:09 Details Edit Delete
3497 100,000 farm animals lost in Australian bushfires However, the total impact will be known only after a few months as more hurt animals may be euthanised to put ad end to their suffering.
First estimates on the impact of Australian wildfires show that almost 100,000 farm animals have been killed in the blaze, according to ABC News. The Federal Agriculture Minister fears stock losses from the recent Australian bushfires will exceed 100,000, as farmers around the country begin to assess the fires' impacts on their properties and livestock. With active fires still burning, delivering fodder and disposing of the deceased animals had been prioritised and the Government has also made 100 veterinarians available to assist in assessing the livestock left standing.
However, agriculture market analyst company Mecardo found about 8.6 million head of sheep and 2.3 million cattle live in areas impacted by the bushfires across Victoria and New South Wales, making up about 12% of the sheep flock and 9% of the national cattle herd.
Because of the size of the area impacted, it could be months before the exact figures on stock losses were known. "It's a far bigger area than what was impacted by the Queensland floods, and that took about 3 months before we knew about the number of cattle impacted," explained senior market analyst Matt Dalgleish.
    Industry 2020-01-07 07:04:48 2025-08-03 00:33:49 Details Edit Delete
3498 Avian flu resurfaces in Poland 7 outbreaks have been reported since late December in turkey, quail and chicken farms.
Avian flu keeps spreading to Poland, with 7 cases reported in the last two weeks in poultry farms in different regions of the country. So far, almost 100,000 birds were affected in turkey, quail and chicken farms. "Three Polish regions are affected – Lubartowski, Ostrowski and Krasnostawski. Highly pathogenic bird flu (H5N8 subtype) has been found in seven domestic bird enclosures: three large turkey enclosures (49 189 turkeys in total), one hen enclosure (36 069 laying hens in total), one quail enclosure (12 960 quails in total), and two home farms with 79 birds of different species – laying hens, ducks, geese and pigeons", informs the Polish Veterinary Service. Birds in the affected enclosures have been put down and burned. Poland is the largest poultry producer in the EU and the world's third-largest poultry exporter. The last case of avian flu in Poland was reported two years ago.
By now, neighboring Belarus has established a ban for poultry imports from the regions impacted by the virus and the Latvian veterinary authority has urged poultry farmers in the Baltic country to take biosafety measures to protect their birds after reports of an avian flu outbreak in Poland.

The Latvian Food and Veterinary Service informed that neither domestic nor decorative birds have been imported from Poland in the past month and that turkeys from the flu-affected farms in Poland have not reached the food chain. Latvia has so far remained free of avian flu.
    Industry 2020-01-07 09:23:13 2025-08-02 20:19:55 Details Edit Delete
3499 Belgium meat consumption has dropped by 10 kilos In the last 10 years, beef was less and less consumed in the country, followed by poultry, mutton and goat.
Belgium meat consumption has declined by 8.9% between 2010 and 2019, according to data issued by Statbel. In 2010, per capita consumption of meat stood at 82.4 kilograms, while now it is 70.2 kilos. Beef has fallen by 19.5% over this time, followed by poultry (-13.6%), mutton and goat (-11.8%). Pork consumption has decreased only by 2.4% since 2010.
At the same time, the consumption of edible offal has increased by 6.5% over the same period. The factors that influenced this change in consumption are as follows: impact on the environment, the consideration of animal welfare as well as various ethical and social considerations.
The trend is reversed from the rest of the EU, where meat consumption has increased by 4.7 kilos between 2013 and 2019. However, despite the drop in consumption, Belgian meat production has not decreased as farmers are taking advantage of the international markets to compensate for the drop in domestic consumption. According to DeStandaard newspaper, 50% of Belgian meat is exported.
    Market 2020-01-07 11:08:45 2025-08-02 20:55:14 Details Edit Delete

3501 Poland launches innovative pig breeding project The "Silesian Fattening" project intends to breed pigs with high nutritional value of meat and a taste known from home products from many years ago.
Almost a dozen of Polish pig farms have entered the "Silesian Fattening" project, who aims to produce pig meat with high nutritional value and a taste known from home products from many years ago by adding a special herb composition to the feed, according to Portal Spozywczy magazine.
The "Silesian Fattening Meat" program is developed for pig breeders in the Opole province (Middle Silesia) and it consists in the appropriate selection of crosses for fattening pigs and a special diet, which uses herbs and spices affecting the nutritional value of meat.
The method was already tested by Rafal Dus, founder of the cooperative "Opolskie Fermy Trzody", who began to add various types of herbs to food for his animals to restore meat with taste qualities similar to those of many years ago.
It turned out that meat produced with the participation of herbs not only has a completely different taste but also behaves differently in a frying pan. First of all, there is less water in it, which is replaced by intramuscular fat - the carrier of flavour also responsible for the tenderness of the meat. It took a little time to determine the right mix to add to the feed, but the effect was achieved. We have a ham that tastes like the one known to the older generation from its childhood," explained Dus.
Today, growers operating within the cooperative already use a special herbal mixture, which includes garlic, rosemary and sage. After obtaining reproducible breeding results, they decided to subject the meat produced according to their method for the evaluation of scientists. "The meat is tender, has a very high protein content, optimal fat content, has a smell and flavor of herbs. When I looked at the chemical composition and fat profile, I was surprised because the results were similar to beef and lamb. It also has a lot of phospholipids, so you can talk about healthy properties," declared professor Wladys?aw Migdal from the Department of Animal Product Processing at the University of Agriculture in Krakow.
    Industry 2020-01-08 06:30:27 2025-08-02 20:04:14 Details Edit Delete
3502 Chinese meat prices remain high Pork has doubled the value over the last 6 months, whilst beef and lamb are climbing continuously.
The picture of the Chinese meat market remains promising for meat exporters, believe Rebecca Oborne, Analyst - Red Meat, AHDB. Although the Asian giant is taking more meat from all over the world, prices are at levels never seen in this market.
"A rise in import has not been enough to stop wholesale meat prices from rising. Pork prices have more than doubled over the past six months. Beef and lamb prices recorded some significant rises during 2018 and have been on a gentle climb over the past 12 months," she commented.

However, pork prices slowed their ascent in the last couple of months partially due to the Chinese government releasing pork from a national reserve onto the market and the trend may continue as Beijing officials are ready to cut duties on US pork.
However, poultry did not perform so well in 2019, as believed by analysts, potentially to increased supply coming both from imports and domestic production.
    Market 2020-01-08 07:01:06 2025-08-02 07:56:04 Details Edit Delete

3507 Second year with downward turnover for Paraguayan beef The value of beef exports has declined by 5.9% due to fewer volumes of exported beef, but also by a decrease in the price obtained.
Paraguay ended 2019 with a turnover of $1,023 million for the beef exported, a decline of 5.9% compared to the year before. This is the second consecutive year with a downward turnover for the beef industry in Paraguay, according to data issued by the National Animal Quality Service (Senacsa).
The situation was created by a drop in both volumes exported and the value of the Paraguayan beef in the international market.

In 2019, 247,168 tonnes were exported for a total of $1,023 million ($4,138.5 per ton). 3508 Is China fed up with beef? A historical drop of $1,500 per ton is reported in the world's largest market.
The state intervention in the meat market in China (the opening of Hong Kong for the entry of meat through the gray channel, not granting more credits to state companies so that private companies buy the product and dump pork and beef from public reserves) had a dramatic impact in the first week of the year.
The Uruguayan meat broker based in China and director of the Casti Trading company, Daniel Castiglioni, told Rurales El País that “there is an abrupt fall in beef prices, up to $ 1,500 per ton, from a month ago to the date. It's something historical, there was never a drop of that level. There are importing companies that have lost a lot of money. Today they ask us to help them with the contracts that are bought expensive, that is the main concern of Asian buyers, they want to get the best possible stop".
The new scenario created a wave of bankruptcies among beef importers, even for the ones with years of experience. Castiglioni estimated that "after the Chinese new year, prices could stabilize. However, business began to take place at very low values,", he added.

The new prices in the Chinese beef market are sending waves of panic across the ocean in three major exporting markets: Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Trading platform "Beef to China" is reporting that "Brazilian cattle price has fallen sharply, as the purchasing enthusiasm, especially from China weakened. Seeing from the trends of cattle price in early 2020, the previous industry's prediction that it would not fall below 200 BRL ($49.20)/15kg no longer holds water. From local time on December 27, 2019, to later one and a half months, the average carcass price of live cattle in Sao Paulo, Brazil, for the first time fell below 200 BRL /15kg, and since that, it keeps stable and below this level.

Uruguay's cattle price is generally in line with Brazil's, that is, since mid-November 2019, it began to decline and then remained stable over the New Year.

Compared with Brazil and Uruguay, live cattle prices in Argentina appeared differently. The average carcass price of live steers didn’t stop rising all the way up until the end of 2019 when it slowed down slightly and then fell back in early 2020; while overall, the average carcass price of live cows began to fall in late November 2019 and kept going down till the beginning of 2020". However, a decrease in prices for Argentinian beef is also directly related to the devaluation of Argentinian peso. At the end of August, the President of the Argentinian Chamber of Meat Industry and Commerce (CICCRA), Miguel Schiariti, warned that the industry dependence on one single export market is too high. "What happens if the Chinese market is getting cold? It would cause us deep damage. We are too focused on one country", he said, adding that opening new markets in Southeast Asia such as Korea, Taiwan or Vietnam would be recommended.
    Market 2020-01-09 08:06:06 2025-08-02 17:38:41 Details Edit Delete
3509 World food prices rose for the third consecutive month in December However, it is not the meat that drove the FAO Food Price Index to its highest level in five years.
In the last month of 2019, FAO Food Price Index has climbed to its highest level in five years but, despite the African swine fever (ASF) crisis in Asia and East Europe, it is not the meat prices that reside behind this situation. The FAO Meat Price Index averaged 191.6 points in December, almost unchanged from its revised November value. The sub-index ended the year 18 percent higher than in December 2018, driven by pig meat quotations both by solid import demand from Asia and pre-festivity internal demand in the European Union and Brazil, according to a press release from FAO.
Instead, it was a strong rally in vegetable oil prices that drove the FAO Food Price Index to its highest level in five years. The FAO Food Price Index averaged 181.7 points during the month, a 2.5 percent increase from November and the highest level since December 2014.

For 2019 as a whole, the index - which tracks monthly changes in the international prices of commonly-traded food commodities - averaged 171.5 points, some 1.8 percent higher than in 2018 but still 25 percent below its peak in 2011.

The FAO Vegetable Oil Price Index rose 9.4 percent from November, increasing for the sixth consecutive month. The latest upturn was once again driven by palm oil prices, buoyed by both solid demand, especially from the biodiesel sector, and concerns about tightening supplies. Despite the December increase - which also concerned soy, sunflower and rapeseed oils - the vegetable oil sub-index had over the course of 2019 reached its lowest annual average since 2007.

The FAO Sugar Price Index rose 4.8 percent from November. The rally was in part prompted by rising crude oil prices, which encouraged Brazil's sugar mills to use more sugarcane supplies to produce ethanol, leading to reduced sugar availability in the global market.

The FAO Dairy Price Index increased by 3.3 percent during the month, led by cheese prices, which rose by almost 8 percent amid tighter export availabilities from the European Union and Oceania.

The FAO Cereal Price Index rose 1.4 percent, driven mainly by wheat prices amid accelerating import demand from China and logistical problems in France due to continued protests in the country. However, maize and rice price quotations remained broadly stable.
    Market 2020-01-09 10:05:40 2025-08-01 17:39:50 Details Edit Delete
3510 2019 was the Year of the Pig in France
Increased demand for pork in China has made prices in France to hike constantly since mid-March 2019, climbing o an average of 1.496 € per kg carcass, which is the highest level reached since 1992. In the latest Genesus market report, Philippe Malletroit, company's Director for France, makes a short description of how the Chinese Year of the Pork was felt in French pig breeders pockets.
"Compared with 2018, the annual market price average increased by 30 cents per kg, which means a 25% increase or a difference of around 28 € (31 US $) per market hog.
Clearly, the price increase began in mid-March and reached its highest level at 1.702 € per kg (1.899 US $) in December (see chart bellow).

Since mid-December hog price lost 6.9 euro cents per kg and got to 1.633 € per kg carcass by the end of the year (market of December 30th). Slaughtering activity in Europe declined during this period due to lower demand on domestic and export markets, but also due to end-of-year holidays," explaind Mr. Malletroit.
The price impact was reflected also in the piglet market, where prices for weaners and 25 kg piglets have jumped quickly. "December 27th, the price for the 8kg weaned piglet was 35.47 € (39.58 US $) per head in Brittany (main pig producing area in France), whereas one year earlier (December 21st, 2018), the price was 19.23 € (21.46 US $) - an increase of more than 84% in one year. We observe the same pattern for the 25 kg piglet, priced at 2.20 € per kg live weight (2.45 US $) this year on December 27th, compared with 1.15 € per kg live weight in the same period of 2018 - a 26€ increase for the 25 kg piglet,", commented Genesus' Director for France (charts bellow).

The outlook for 2020 looks promising for the industry but the biosecurity threat planning over Germany can impact the whole pork sector in Europe. "We expect hog prices to retain record levels due to the strong demand caused by African Swine Fever (ASF) in China. ASF severely affects Chinese domestic production which leaves a huge demand for pork meat and meat protein in general.

We need to pay special attention to ASF development in Europe, especially in Germany. If Germany would to get ASF disease, China will probably continue to buy pork from Germany but at a considerably lower price. This event would produce a ripple effect on Europe's pig market as a whole," added Mr. Malletroit.
    Industry 2020-01-09 10:55:05 2025-08-02 09:48:26 Details Edit Delete

3514 Danish Crown reports reduced CO2 emissions for pig meat Danish Crown's suppliers of pigs have reduced CO2 emissions by almost 7% on average since 2016, and their goal is to cut another 4% by the end of 2022.
Carbon footprint in for Danish pig meat continues to decline, according to a Danish Crown press release. The company's suppliers of pigs have reduced CO2 emissions by almost 7% on average since 2016, and their goal is to cut another 4% by the end of 2022. "This corresponds to the total carbon footprint from 12,000 Danish households," informs the press release.
Over the past year, Danish Crowns has climate-certified a share of the company’s owners, the Danish Farmers, corresponding to approximately 90% of the pigs delivered to the Group's Danish abattoirs. Data has been collected on everything from feed to power consumption to slurry handling by the company's owners and on average they already now have reduced the CO2 load by 6.7% since 2016.
"Our owners and Baltic Control have done a fantastic job of forming an overview of the environmental impact of each farmer. At the same time, I am really pleased that our owners have a total goal of reducing their climate footprint by an additional 4.1 percentage points before being re-visited by Baltic Control in 2022," says Nicolaj Nørgaard, Vice President, Danish Crown Owner Services.
If the owners reach the goals, they have set for the next three years, it equates to a reduction of 26.5 kg. CO2 per pig compared to the norm from 2016. When increased with Danish Crown's current slaughter figures, it gives a total saving for primary production of 110,250 tonnes of CO2 over the next three years or 100 tonnes of CO2 every single day.
If the farmers' own targets for 2022 are met, the total CO2 reduction of Danish Crown's owners will be very close to 30 per cent compared to 2005. Also, the reduction of CO2 emissions achieved at Danish Crown's abattoirs will be added, but those are yet to be calculated, said the company.
    Industry 2020-01-13 08:02:43 2025-08-01 14:53:24 Details Edit Delete
