7199  Hong Kong foodservice sector celebrates British dairy and red meat  Dishes featuring high-quality British dairy and red meat are being cooked up by three of Hong Kong’s most talented chefs as part of a month-long campaign.  <p><span lang="DE">The campaign, launched by AHDB on 1 March, will run throughout the month with chefs Saito Chau of Chineseology, Tiff Lo of Jean May and Adam Catterall of Roganic creating beef, pork and cheese dishes that will be offered to diners at each of their restaurants until 31 March.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">All three have created original dishes that showcase the quality, variety and versatility of British red meat and dairy products, including Tossed Ox Tongue Spicy Sichuan Sauce, Scotch Egg Piccalilli and Tunworth Cheese, Alpine Plum, Buckwheat Crumb and Lemon Thyme.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Lucy Randolph, AHDB Head of International Trade Development (Dairy), said:</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Hong Kong is an important dairy importer and the market presents opportunities for premium dairy products from the UK in the foodservice sector and with high-end retailers.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Our campaign is aimed at raising the profile of our high-quality produce with consumers in Hong Kong, and we are delighted that three of its most renowned chefs have created dishes to showcase what the UK has to offer".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Jonathan Eckley, AHDB Head of International Trade Development, said:</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"AHDB analysis has shown pork and beef consumption in Hong Kong to be among the highest in Asia. 7198  USMEF: Rapid start for 2024 pork exports  U.S. pork exports raced to a great start in 2024, according to January data released by USDA and compiled by USMEF.  <p style="font-weight: 400;">Although January pork exports were led by another powerful performance in leading market Mexico, U.S. pork continued to make gains in a wide range of Western Hemisphere and Asia-Pacific destinations. Pork exports totaled 251,424 metric tons (mt) in January, up 6% from a year ago, while export value also increased 6% to $682.1 million.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"Mexico&rsquo;s demand for U.S. pork is so spectacular that it tends to overshadow other great success stories", said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. "It is especially gratifying to see other markets following the trail blazed by Mexico, as purchases expand beyond raw material for further processing to include center-of-the-plate cuts, including loins, which are gaining popularity at retail and foodservice".</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">January pork exports to Mexico reached 102,181 mt, up 6% from a year ago and the second largest on record, trailing only December 2023. Export value increased 8% to $207.2 million, the seventh largest on record.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">After a very strong finish in 2023, January pork exports to Korea soared 53% from a year ago to 20,727 mt. Export value was up 51% to $67.6 million. This follows a remarkable performance in December, when shipments reached nearly 24,000 mt, the highest since 2019. Despite a rising presence of Canadian, Mexican and Brazilian pork in Korea, U.S. pork continues to make gains as the U.S. industry retakes market share from the European Union.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Despite lower shipments to leading market Honduras, January pork exports to Central America jumped 22% from a year ago to 11,846 mt, while value increased 29% to $35.7 million. Exports climbed significantly year-over-year to Guatemala, El Salvador, Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua.&nbsp;</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Other January results for U.S. pork exports include:</p> <ul style="font-weight: 400;"> <li>Led by outstanding growth in Colombia, January pork exports to South America climbed 53% from a year ago to 11,464 mt, valued at $32.1 million (up 62%). Exports to Colombia have rebounded strongly since October 2023 and have held above 10,000 mt for each of the last four months. January shipments to Colombia increased 57% to 10,448 mt, while value soared 70% to $28.1 million. Exports to Chile increased 22% to 692 mt, valued at $2.7 million (up 26%), while shipments to Peru were up 49% in volume (122 mt) and 19% in value ($215,000).</li> <li>Exports of U.S. pork variety meat, which were record-large in 2023, continued to perform well in January. Despite trending lower to leading destination China, variety meat shipments increased 7% from a year ago to 50,353 mt, valued at $109.3 million (down 1%). Exports increased to Mexico, the Philippines, Canada, Central and South America and Korea.</li> <li>&nbsp;Pork exports to Australia, which rebounded dramatically in 2023, continued to build momentum in January. Exports more than quadrupled from last January&rsquo;s low volume, jumping 374% to 9,059 mt. Export value increased 363% to $32.8 million. U.S. pork has also retaken share from the EU in the Australian market.</li> <li>&nbsp;Exports to Malaysia, which were record-large in 2023, continued to show strength in January. Shipments were nearly 1000% larger than a year ago at 503 mt, while value increased 850% to $1.5 million.</li> <li>&nbsp;January pork shipments to Japan were the largest since August, but were down slightly year-over-year in both volume (28,216, down 1%) and value ($114.8 million, down 1%). U.S. pork faces intense competition from Canadian and Mexican chilled pork and from defrosted Spanish pork being sold at retail. The weak Japanese yen continues to cause customers to seek out the most affordable options, including Brazilian pork.</li> <li>Pork export value equated to $60.00 per head slaughtered in January, up 4% from a year ago. Exports accounted for 28.3% of total January pork production and 24.3% for muscle cuts. 7197  The IAWS Animal Walfare certification establishes a transparent communication channel with the consumer  The INTERPORC 'IAWS' Animal Welfare certification is a “tool for empowerment of the pig sector because it allows us to establish a transparent and direct communication channel with the consumer.” This was highlighted by Alberto Herranz, general director of INTERPORC at the Porciforum event held in Lérida.  <p><span lang="DE">During his speech, entitled 'Reputational Communication and Animal Welfare &ndash; Keys to empowering the pig sector', Herranz referred to the proactivity in terms of animal welfare of the Spanish pig sector, as well as its capacity for constant evolution and adaptation to changing conditions and increasing consumer demands.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"People have the right to know how food is produced, its nutritional content and the food safety measures that are followed.&nbsp;That is the challenge that the pork sector faces daily.&nbsp;And, given that we comply, even above the required regulations, I consider that we also have the obligation to disseminate it on behalf of the professionals who, with their good work and professionalism, make it possible", he stated.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In this direction, Herranz has explained the approach to communication carried out by the Interprofessional to promote the 'B+ Animal Welfare Commitment' seal and its IAWS Technical Regulation, accreditable by ENAC.&nbsp;"Our goal is to show the consumer that European legislation is the most demanding in the world, and based on it we have voluntarily obtained an even stricter certification in animal welfare".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Measures that have led the Spanish pig sector to work with a holistic vision of well-being that includes aspects such as health, biosecurity, animal management, food safety and traceability.&nbsp;All this through a regulation that is periodically reviewed and adapted thanks to a Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"In this way, we constantly stay ahead of both future regulations and consumer demands.&nbsp;That is a reality that allows us to affirm with total pride that we have the most respectful production system in the world with regard to animal welfare", concluded the director of INTERPORC.</span></p>    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-03-11 00:05:21  2025-08-05 03:57:40  Details Edit Delete
7196  Pork exports accumulate an increase of 17.6 percent this year  The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) reports that Brazilian pork exports (considering all products, including fresh and processed) totaled 97.8 thousand tons in February, a number that exceeds the total shipped in the country by 24.4%. same period in 2023, with 78.6 thousand tons.  <p><span lang="DE">In terms of revenue, pork sales totaled US$ 205.7 million in the second month of this year, a result 11.3% higher than the US$ 184.9 million recorded in the same comparative period last year.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In the two months, the accumulated increase is 17.6% in volumes, reaching 197.5 thousand tons this year, against 167.9 thousand tons recorded between January and February 2023. 7195  China: Pork production in 2023 totalled 57.94 million tonnes  In 2023 Chinese pork production was up year on year following increased slaughter and culling rates, according to a recentlty AHDB analysis.  <p><span lang="DE">According to the National Bureau of Statistics China,&nbsp;<a name="m_-7862959591618821206__Hlk160870420"></a>pork production in 2023 totalled 57.94 million tonnes. This is a year-on-year increase of 5%, driven by increased slaughter with reported oversupply on the domestic market and reduced producer margins leading to increased culling rates.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">To stabilise pig production and supply, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs (MARA) recently revised the "Implementation Plan for Pig Production Capacity Regulation" by adjusting down the national target number of reproductive sows from 41 million head to 39 million head. It has been reported that the sow herd has already been in decline through 2023 and into 2024, with sow numbers down between 5-7% year on year.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The USDA forecast that the total Chinese pig population will decline 6% in 2024. This is likely to tighten China&rsquo;s domestic pig meat supplies in the short term. However, longer term, some gradual production gains are expected as on farm efficiency and sow productivity improve, following new genetics and controlling disease spread.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The Chinese government are firmly standing by their pork self-sufficiency goal of 95%, as set out in 2020, actively encouraging the move away from small scale to large scale production. The Chinese government also continue to monitor market behaviour and will intervene when production, pig numbers or prices move above or below certain thresholds. These thresholds have recently been updated in the revised "Implementation Plan for Pig Production Capacity Regulation&rdquo;.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Chinese pig prices remained low throughout 2023, averaging 15.41 yuan/kg. This was a decline of nearly 4 yuan/kg compared to the 2022 average price.&nbsp; It is reported that the cost of production for producers is around the 16 yuan/kg mark resulting in financial losses and increased culling. In turn this has led to an increase of available product to the market, pressuring prices even lower.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">So far in 2024, pig prices have averaged 14.95 yuan/kg. Although there was a small uplift in late January/early February to meet the demand of the Chinese New Year holiday, peaking at 15.61 yuan/kg at 07 Feb, prices have since eased back again to 15.02 yuan/kg at 21 Feb. It is likely that pig prices will remain pressured in 2024 whilst domestic supply rebalances, consumer demand may provide some seasonal support through the year.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">There were two sides to the story of Chinese pig meat imports for 2023. When looking at total pig meat excluding offal, import volumes fell 12% year on year to 1.54 million tonnes, the lowest annual import volume since the ASF outbreak in 2018. However, offal volumes grew 6% year on year to 1.10 million tonnes.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">When looking at the key trading partners, the competitiveness of product on the market has been highlighted. Although the EU27 block remains the largest exporter of total pig meat (excluding offal) to China, Spain has been knocked off the top of the individual country list and overtaken by volumes from Brazil as well as losing market share to Canada and the USA. These changes have been driven by the lower product prices in Brazil and the USA compared to higher pricing in Europe.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">For the offal category, it is a similar story, with EU27 retaining the largest volume share as a whole, but Spain and Denmark losing market share to the USA and Canada.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Shipments from the UK to China have declined in volume terms year on year due to lower production. However, UK product has not lost out on market share, maintaining 4% of total pig meat excluding offal and 5% of offal imports to China. This at least holds some positive undertones for UK producers in terms of carcase balance alongside keeping tension in the domestic marketplace, with all pig meat produced able to find a home on the market.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Demand has picked up amongst Chinese consumers for more affordable cuts following a slow economic recovery post covid and global inflationary pressures increasing the cost of living. Consumers are eating out more, but they are spending less. Price has become the dominant decision maker for consumers, which is hurting the food service sector.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The economic situation is not expected to see significant changes in the coming year and so we expect consumption trends from 2023 to carry through 2024. 7194  Australian red meat exports surge amid global demands  Australian red meat production continues its upward trajectory, leading to a surge in export volumes to unprecedented levels, informs Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).   <p><span lang="DE">With robust demand in key export markets and a global shift in supply, Australian exporters are well positioned to capitalise on increased production and address shortages from other suppliers.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In February, combined lamb and mutton exports reached 52,351 shipped weight tonnes (swt), marking the highest export volume for any month on record. Lamb exports have been very high over the past few years, but what makes this figure remarkable is that February is usually a month with relatively smaller export volumes. Beyond being the shortest month, export volumes usually peak in the last three months of the year, as the spring flush yields increased production.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In 2024, high slaughter volumes at the start of the year translated into very strong export volumes. The United States remained Australia&rsquo;s largest lamb market, with exports rising 36% year-on-year (YoY) to 7,543 swt. Meanwhile, exports to China lifted 15% YoY to 5,215 swt. Mutton exports overall lifted 37% YoY to 21,299 swt. China remained the largest market for mutton exports, amounting to 6,639 swt, while exports to Saudi Arabia experience the most significant growth among major markets, growing by 161% YoY to 1,796 swt.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Beef exports lifted 33% YoY to 93,834 swt, nearing the levels exported in February 2019 and marking the fourth-largest February export total on record. Exports to Japan lifted 43% YoY to 23,794 swt, becoming the largest market for the first time since February 2023, while exports to the USA rose 83% YoY to 21,341 swt and exports to China lifted 26% YoY to 15,757 swt.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The lift in exports to Japan is promising, coinciding with the clearance of the meat backlog in cold storage. Compared to 2023, beef in cold storage in Japan has fallen by 14%, while in the United States cold stores have fallen by 12%, due to demand amid declining production. As such, the rise in exports to Japan is a promising signal that demand for Australian beef is robust in global markets, and that the increase in supply forecast in the recent cattle projections will be in high demand around the world.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The United States emerged as the largest export market for goat in February, with exports lifting 143% YoY to 2,149 swt, 55% of total exported volume. Export volumes lifted in all major export markets except China. 7193  Mexico and the United States agree on electronic certification of meat merchandise  Digital tools protect the integrity, efficiency and authenticity of export certificates, and the progressive reduction of paper use is promoted.  <p style="font-weight: 400;">This agreement represents the sum of efforts to protect agricultural health and the health of consumers.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">With the purpose of carrying out the electronic certification of meat merchandise that is marketed between Mexico and the United States and thereby facilitating and providing greater security to the import and export processes, the governments of both countries signed a letter of intent to form a plan of collaborative work.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The signed document establishes the interest in promoting the progressive reduction of the use of paper and the adoption of digital tools to improve the integrity, efficiency and authenticity of export certificates for poultry, beef, pork, sheep and goat meat.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">This agreement represents the sum of efforts to protect agricultural health and the health of consumers.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Mexico and the United States went from being competitors in food production to complementary partners.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Since the imposition of tariffs is no longer the predominant factor for trade, countries must streamline and facilitate their processes, which is why electronic certification is an effective method to achieve this, since it provides certainty to the marketing process and reduces costs of transaction.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The United States is a strategic trade partner for our country, since it concentrates more than 80 percent of the total volume of Mexican food exports.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The Undersecretary of the United States Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) indicated that it works under the guidelines of innovation, science and transparency, in order to guarantee that its consumers and those in other parts of the world have healthy foods and safe within their reach at affordable prices.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">This vision is extended with our North American trade partners to strengthen and position the region as one of the most important generators of safe food for the world, he noted.</p>    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-03-09 00:05:35  2025-08-05 20:42:38  Details Edit Delete
7192  USMEF: Successful Gulfood show underscores opportunities and challenges in the region  More than 150,000 attendees from 190 countries were in Dubai, UAE, for Gulfood, the world’s largest annual food and beverage show. USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom reports it was the busiest Gulfood show he’s ever attended with exceptionally large contingents from the Middle East, Africa, China and North Asia.  <p style="font-weight: 400;">Beef supply was of great interest for the trade with buyers showing strong interest in exploring a variety of cuts.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"There was an appreciation for the variety of high-quality beef cuts that are available from the U.S.&nbsp; For those who know our middle meats they were interested in looking at end-cut options", says Halstrom. "And those familiar with our end cuts were interested in our variety meat choices. That&rsquo;s a major benefit of this show, getting our members together with the trade to talk specifically about the options we have available".</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">A variety of U.S. beef middle meats and end cuts were prepared for attendees at the USA Pavilion .</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">USMEF Africa Representative Matt Copeland (pictured right) meets with regional buyers.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The turnout from Africa was the largest that Halstrom had seen at Gulfood, which contributed to numerous meetings about market development plans and strategies for the U.S. red meat industry.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"We had a great many discussions at the show about Africa amongst USMEF staff, the Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS), importers and U.S. suppliers who are active or interested in the region", said Halstrom. "There&rsquo;s tremendous enthusiasm for the potential that Africa holds for our industry".</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Red Sea shipping issues were also a common point of discussion during Gulfood. Exporters have adapted to the shipping challenges in the short term but expressed serious concerns about continued disruptions, added risk, increased transit time around the cape of Africa and soaring transportation costs.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"The real issue for us is that the Middle East is a high-value region for U.S. beef on a per pound basis. 7191  JBS expands its operations at its largest beef unit in Australia  JBS began operating the second production shift at the Dinmore beef unit, in the Queensland region, Australia. 7190  AHDB and Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales – will participate at the Annual Meat Conference in Tennessee  Later this month, red meat businesses from the UK will be heading to the Annual Meat Conference in the USA as part of a key visit to help grow British pork, beef and lamb exports.  <p><span lang="DE">Four beef and lamb exporters from across the UK will join AHDB and Hybu Cig Cymru &ndash; Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) &ndash; at the&nbsp;Annual Meat Conference (AMC)&nbsp;in Tennessee, to showcase the high quality and sustainability of red meat products from the UK.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Three of the export businesses are listed to export pig meat to California, further to the state&rsquo;s introduction of new legislation Proposition 12 on 1 January this year. Proposition 12 has established stricter production standards, including the provision of greater freedom of movement for pigs. 7189  Big annual increases boost for Welsh sheep exports  Exports of Welsh Lamb and other sheep meat again increased year-on-year with both volumes and value seeing double digit percentage rises in 2023, new official statistics reveal.  <p><span lang="DE">New HMRC data shows the total volume of sheep meat exported from Wales is estimated to have reached almost 30,500 tonnes, 12 % up on the year, while total value hit &pound;190.9 million - up 10 %.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"It&rsquo;s great news and really pleasing to see that, post-Brexit, increased shipments to the EU drove this very welcome lift in volumes and value", said Laura Pickup, Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales&rsquo; (HCC) Head of Strategic Marketing and Connections.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"It&rsquo;s a credit to our export team that volumes of fresh and frozen sheep meat exported from Wales to the EU were up around 13 % on the year - and in addition, value was up 14 % at &pound;179.3 million".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">She said France and Germany both continue to receive notable volumes of sheep meat from Wales and that HCC was "delighted that the figures for the Netherlands and Italy are climbing steeply, with volumes to Italy up an incredible near 40 %".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Ms Pickup said although farmgate prices in Wales were firm last year, Welsh Lamb continues to be competitive in the global marketplace.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The new HMRC data for both beef and sheep meat showed the total value of red meat exports from Wales for 2023 reached &pound;267.9 million, up from &pound;257.5 million in 2022, an increase of 4.1%, while the total volume of red meat exports from Wales for 2023 was estimated at almost 48,500 tonnes, an increase of 0.5% on the year.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Volumes have continued to recover but they are still around 13 % &nbsp;short of the highs of around 55,500 tonnes experienced in 2020. 7188  Animal wellbeing focus delivers results  Kylagh Feedlot in WA, Australia is a testament to how best practice management to create a low-stress environment for cattle delivers results – with shade one of the key ingredients, informs Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).  <p style="font-weight: 400;">Kylagh is a leading Western Australian feedlot and early adopter of practices to improve feedlot cattle wellbeing and performance.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Across 110-day programs in summer, Kylagh Feedlot&rsquo;s owner and general manager Ivan Rogers saw first-hand how shade benefited his cattle.</p> <p><strong>Recognising importance of animal wellbeing</strong></p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Kylagh Feedlot has three pillars of priority when it comes to running their business: environment, animal wellbeing and people. Of these, Ivan said they have identified animal wellbeing as the most important investment.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"Shelter is a necessity for all walks of life. However, our lot holds predominantly black Angus and Waygu which are not very heat tolerant", Ivan said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Since implementing the shade, Ivan has observed changes to physical displays of heat load, including:</p> <ul style="font-weight: 400;"> <li>less or no panting</li> <li>shade seeking behaviour on warmer days</li> <li>greater feed intake (increase of 0.13kg average daily gain)</li> <li>calmer behaviour.</li> </ul> <p><strong>Providing choice</strong></p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Kylagh developed their shade and shelter infrastructure plan to give their livestock choice.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"While we were sure our cattle would seek shade, especially during summer, we found it was better to allow them the choice if they wanted to use our shade infrastructure or not", Ivan said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"During the summer, we saw the majority of our cattle making the most of the shade but there were still enough outliers who found the pen floor temperature to be cool enough to endorse our theory of providing the choice".</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Ivan said Kylagh Feedlot also allowed for choice by providing different types of shade.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"The style I have found most beneficial is a shade cloth supported by a six-metre-high steel infrastructure", he said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"Our shade cloths are about 10x25m, and we look to have enough of them to provide shade to 80 adult equivalents (AE) per pen which is at least 3m<sup>2</sup>&nbsp;per head.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"In addition to our shade infrastructure, we&rsquo;ve planted trees around our yards to provide a different form of shelter should our cattle seek it.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"This was done after surveying wind maps which showed our feed yard to be in a moderate to high wind environment, meaning trees would not have any detrimental impact of air flow".</p> <p><strong>Supporting strategies</strong></p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The feedlot is located 170km inland and experiences high levels of dry heat during summer, so Ivan has other strategies in his toolbox to reduce heat load in cattle.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"To help us prepare our cattle for extreme heat events, we keep a close eye on the predicted weather forecast through sources like the Bureau of Meteorology, which provide us with plenty of time to take action.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"It&rsquo;s unusual for us to need to move our cattle from their pens, however we have a number of large yard areas which contain open water and we let our cattle move into these if the temperature calls for it".</p> <p><strong>Other benefits</strong></p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Ivan said providing shade to livestock had the added benefits of improving staff&nbsp;welfare and profit.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"Knowing our cattle have the resources to keep themselves cool during high temperatures reduces a lot of stress for us as their carers", Ivan said.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"It's a big investment but it's worth it. 7187  British beef, lamb and pork take centre stage at FoodEx  One of Asia’s biggest food and drinks exhibitions is this week providing the platform for UK exporters to fly the flag for quality beef, lamb and pork, informs the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).  <p><span lang="DE">Eight businesses have joined&nbsp;AHDB at&nbsp;FoodEx&nbsp;in Tokyo, to help promote British red meat and grow exports to the region, which were worth &pound;12 million in 2023.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The four-day event is expected to attract thousands of buyers from Japan and the wider South East Asia region, providing the platform for UK export businesses to connect with existing and potential new customers.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In addition to the exhibition, around 100 industry stakeholders and representatives from UK government attended a British Meat dinner on Monday 4 March. 7186  Australia: Record goat production for 2023  The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released its official quarterly statistics on livestock slaughter and meat production on 20 February 2024, providing insights into the livestock industry for the 2023 calendar year.  <p><span lang="DE">In 2023, goat slaughter and production reached its highest levels, with a 41% increase in slaughter to 2,358,430 head, compared to 2022. Victoria contributed 47% to total slaughter, processing 1,097,406 head in 2023. Similarly, production increased by 30% to 28,463 tonnes compared to 2022, indicating a steady supply of goats and a robust goat population supporting record levels of production and slaughter.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Carcase weights exhibited significant fluctuation, ranging from 14kg/head to 17kg/head. In 2023, the average carcase weight decreased by 1.3kg/head to 15.63kg. This was expected due to the record levels of slaughter and production, driven by a wider weight range of goats being processed.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Export volumes surged to 18,356 head in 2023, marking the second-largest volume over the past five years, with an increase of 13,487 head. China emerged as the second-largest Australian export market, importing 2,308 tonnes of goat meat. 7185  Brazilian Beef: Participation in Gulfood generated USD 122 million in business  The Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (ABIEC) once again took the Brazilian Beef project to Gulfood, one of the most important food fairs in the world, which took place between February 19th and 24th, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates.  <p><span lang="DE">The participation of the beef sector, through the Brazilian Beef Project, included a partnership of more than 20 years with the Brazilian Export and Investment Promotion Agency (ApexBrasil).</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">During the five days of the fair, participating companies welcomed their customers, new buyers and everyone interested in Brazilian beef, once again showing Brazilian beef to the world.&nbsp;The 21 companies that were present at the Brazilian Beef pavilion were: Astra, Barra Mansa, Beauvallet, Better Beef, Comesul, Cooperfrigu, Estrela, Fortefrigo, Frialto, Frigon, Frigosul, Frigotil, Frisa, Iguatemi, Masterboi, Merc&uacute;rio, Naturafrig, Plena, Prima Foods, Supremo and Zanchetta. 7184  HCC champions female farmers ahead of International Women’s Day  International Women’s Day is a global day to celebrate women, challenge stereotypes and mark their achievements. Red meat production is traditionally associated with men, but there are many inspiring women who are making their mark in the industry and are passionate about its future.  <p><span lang="DE">Two beef and sheep farmers from mid Wales spoke to Hybu Cig Cymru - Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) - an organisation that champions equal opportunities - about their passion for the industry.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Multi-tasking mother, full time farmer and diversifier Sioned Thomas-Jones is one of many generations of her family to farm at Nant-y-Gaseg near Machynlleth, mid Wales. In partnership with her parents, Huw and Eleri, she runs a flock of around 960 head of speckle faced, Welsh Tregaron type and crossbred ewes, selling the finished lambs at the local livestock market. They also keep 30 suckler cows and sell their Limousin X store cattle, again at the local market, where they recently made history in the ring selling their 17-month Lim X steer for a centre record of &pound;2,010.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Sioned, 37, has always wanted to be a farmer. She said: "I had a keen interest in farming from a very young age and have worked here on the farm for nearly twenty years. I enjoy being out on the hills gathering the sheep, looking down on the Dyfi Valley - it really is heaven on earth for me.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"My passion is sheep work. Shearing and lambing, I love it! Lambing in particular is a special time of year, there is nothing better than welcoming new life onto the farm, and I enjoy sharing that experience with my 9-year-old son, Huw Ifan".&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Sioned says that she has never felt any different for being female and has been wholeheartedly accepted in the farming community.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"I strongly feel that women play an equal role in the industry and have many female friends who work on farms.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Women have always been critical on the farm but traditionally may not have been given the credit they deserve. Despite being quite old-fashioned here &ndash; we enjoy coming into the house to a nice meal on the table after a long day on the hills, usually prepared by my mother, who also plays a crucial role in the business - it gives me great pride to see that things have now changed, women are proving that it&rsquo;s not just an industry for men.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"I&rsquo;m involved in all aspects of the farm - from handling the animals to the big machinery - it's what I enjoy!"</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">However, she feels a sense of sadness that many farmers&rsquo; wives these days go out to work for an additional income to support the family. &ldquo;It&rsquo;s tough when you have to split yourself between two big demands - the farm and paid employment - and raising a family at the same time too.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"My husband, Andy, works as a carpenter and we have diversified into tourism to boost our business &ndash; back in 2016 we renovated an old farm cottage into self-catering holiday accommodation, and the following year, we started a glamping business. We also sell home-produced lamb meat boxes which are always in popular demand. We pride ourselves on producing quality sustainable food, with low food miles".&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Sioned recognises the importance of protecting the landscape and environment and ensuring a future in farming for the next generation, including women. "I&rsquo;d like to see more women entering the industry and I&rsquo;m keen to play my part in securing a sustainable future for the red meat sector. We already do a great deal &ndash; we have planted hedges, keep native breeds, have stock excluded woodland on the farm and maintain the dry-stone walls that have been a feature of our farm for centuries!"&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">With pure enjoyment and passion oozing from within Sioned as she speaks about her work, she is keen to encourage women to pursue a career in farming. "I think the future for women in agriculture looks bright. If you are passionate about farming, dedicated and enjoy what you do like I do, then my only advice would be to go for it!"&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Another female farming champion is Mali Davies, who&nbsp;farms Pontargamddwr on the outskirts of Tregaron. Bordering the Cors Caron National Nature Reserve which is a vast area of wetland filling the broad valley of the River Teifi, the farm has been in the Davies family since 2000. Here Mali and her mum Sian and sister Gwawr, look after 50 cattle and 300 sheep.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Mali, 20 years old, studies Rural Enterprise and Land management at Harper Adams and is in her second year. Farming has been her passion from an early age and she enjoys the day-to-day work and variety that farming brings.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">She said: "I&rsquo;ve been brought up on the farm and have always helped with anything that needed doing alongside my mum and dad. It&rsquo;s in my blood and something I really enjoy doing. It&rsquo;s been my passion from the start and I really enjoy being with the livestock and ensure they&rsquo;re in good health. Being outdoors is great and I love the machinery work too. It&rsquo;s the variety and no day is the same".&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">As a woman in the industry Mali believes that women today have the opportunity to pursue their dreams within the industry and that it&rsquo;s important for women have an equal opportunity in the agriculture sector.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Now is a good time for women to have a career in farming and I would encourage anyone to do so if that&rsquo;s what they want to do. Women have a different perception about farming to men. We share our ideas with each other and work alongside each other", she said.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Mali is determined to breed good quality sheep that produce a high-end product for the market, but high cost of production and trying to make a profit for the business can be a challenge.&nbsp;&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"I try to ensure we breed stock that are performing to their highest capabilities and that they can rear lambs as cheaply as possible. We also make sure that our grasslands are kept in really good condition so that we get the best out of the grass and produce meat from the grassland and costs are kept low and we have higher profits", she said.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Walking the fields, Mali adds: "The opportunities for women now are great. We can do the same as men can do. There has been an increase in women playing an active role on the farm and are we are getting appreciated more. &nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Women are being taken more seriously. From our point of view and talking to my friends at college, I feel the imbalance has been addressed, however, for the future of farming to prevail, both men and women need to unify and recognise that we are equal".&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">With lambing starting on the farm beginning of March, Mali has a busy time ahead - regularly checking the sheep and making sure the bedding is kept fresh for the livestock.&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"The cows are also in at the moment so we keep the sheds clean and tidy and make sure they&rsquo;re kept in tip top condition too. It&rsquo;s a big challenge juggling college assignments and then keeping up with jobs here on the farm. We have to be efficient and keep on top of everything, but girl power all the way and we&rsquo;re working well as a team!"&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Women and farming have an important role to play and she adds: "I have been very lucky and my family and friends have been very supportive through the years. Farming is such an important sector. It&rsquo;s the backbone of our rural communities, it provides jobs and keeps our culture alive. I am concerned about what the future might hold for farming and I want to make sure we have a sector for our women in the future - food production needs both".&nbsp;</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Speaking about the important role of women in the industry and at HCC, Anne Dunn, HCC&rsquo;s Communications and External Affairs Lead, said: "Women have seen a real change in attitudes over the years and there is more support out there now. 7180  Spain exported 738,248 quality seal pieces of Serrano Ham in 2023  The Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE) has released the export data of its ConsorcioSerrano quality seal corresponding to the year 2023, with a total of 738,248 sealed pieces, a figure that represents an interannual increase of 3.93% compared to the previous year's exports in accumulated terms, a period in which a total of 710,331 pieces were added.  <p><span lang="DE">For its part, it is important to highlight some results achieved during 2023, since, throughout the first quarter of the year, in February a total of 67,898 pieces were sealed, which represented a growth percentage of 31.03% and an increase of 16,080 pieces over the same period of the previous year.&nbsp;Likewise, in the months of June and July there was an increase, respectively, of 33.52% and 33.29%, while, in the month of December, a total of 61,556 pieces were obtained, 7,836 more than in 2022, representing a growth of 14.59%.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The intense dissemination work carried out by the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium during its 34 years of experience has led to its quality seal being consolidated until it is present in&nbsp;more than 65 international markets,&nbsp;representing around 60% of the production of cured ham and 65% of exports in value.&nbsp;A context that has allowed it to configure, therefore, an increasingly solid organization chart within the serrano ham sector, as well as reach record figures in its exports with more than 18 million pieces sealed since its inception.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Furthermore, during 2023, the CJSE has continued to develop a sector plan together with ICEX, with promotional activity that focused mainly on 4 strategic markets such as France, the US, Mexico and the United Kingdom.&nbsp;Furthermore, in Australia, the association continued with its promotional campaign together with the Consorzio del Prosciutto di Parma, started in 2019 with the aim of promoting quality ham in that market.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The strength of this project founded in 1990 has been achieved with activities to promote and disseminate the ConsorcioSerrano quality seal in different markets around the world through tastings at points of sale, advertising in specialized and consumer-directed media, training sessions, training courses or participation in various national and international fairs;&nbsp;which have contributed to bringing the qualities of Serrano ham closer to the general and professional public and have increased the added value of this product by making known the differential values of ConsorcioSerrano ham all over the world.</span></p>    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-03-06 00:20:27  2025-08-06 00:35:53  Details Edit Delete
