2968 | Spain is increasing its pig production by 4% | Pork shipments to China have increased by 34% in the first quarter of the year. |
Spain has increased its pig production in the first two months of 2019 4% (+32,000 tonnes), despite the fact that domestic consumption is declining and exports to a number of EU markets fell back.
According to Bethan Wilkins, AHDB Analyst, part of that volume of pork "is being stored, in anticipation of higher prices later in the year". Nevertheless, pork exports have grown by 1% in the first quarter of the year, as increased demand from China become more visible.
Shipments to China rose by 34% (+20,300 tonnes) year-on-year, to account for 19% of total trade. This reflects the ongoing African Swine Fever situation.
In the first quarter of this year, Spanish fresh/frozen pork exports increased by 1% (+4,200 tonnes) year-on-year to 422,900 tonnes. Average export prices were already a little higher in the first quarter (+4%), with trade valued at €924 million.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-06-05 06:30:10 | 2025-08-01 16:37:50 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3857 | Meat consumption on the rise in Spain | Beef was the most preferred meat in Spain in the first month of lockdown. |
Spain has increased meat consumption by more than 16% over the first month of lockdown. Household expenditures have increased by 15.4% when comes to food and by 16.3% for meat, according to official data from the Ministry of Agriculture. In March, more than 214, 000 tonnes of meat were consumed by Spaniards in their homes compared with 184,000 tonnes reported in the same month last year.

Meats, in fact, increased their consumption above the general average for food products (15.4%), showing consumers' commitment to meat products during the state of alarm. On a negative note, the increase has not been generalized in all groups. Thus, the rise in beef (20.9%) stands out, as in fresh chicken and pork, with variations of 16.9% and 18.6% respectively. On the other hand, the sale of sheep/goat and rabbit meat declined with falls of 4.9% and 2.4% respectively.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-05-18 13:07:08 | 2025-08-01 22:26:49 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3316 | Spanish pork industry barely keeps up with exports | Over the first seven months of 2019, pork exports have increased by 9.2% but freezing capacity has been reached. |
Spain has increased pork exports by 9.2% in the first seven months of this year compared to the same period of 2018 due to strong demand from China. "The Spanish market is in a totally unusual situation at this time of year. We find a price of € 1,451 / kg live and weighing 110.53 kg live and 85.77 kg carcass, both the highest of the last 5 years in this week of October," reported Mercedes Vega, General Director for Spain, Italy and Portugal, Genesus Inc.
The weight of processing is significantly higher due to demand and because the producer is interested in optimizing its costs by increasing the sales weights. All production that is not going to export to Asia, stays in the EU at prices that do not help the industry to recover sales margins as usual in previous years. In the first seven months of the year, exports have increased by 9.2% compared with 2018, (1,119,583 tons in 2018 vs.1,222,188 tons in 2019), she mentioned in the report.
Export to Asia has increased from 32.75% (2018) to 38.40% (2019) of total exports. Exports to China lead the way with an increase from 15.80% (198,424 tons in 2018) to 22.4% (306,645 tons in 2019) from total exports.
"The increase in pork exports is driven by two very important factors:

1. The packing plant of the Pini Group has started operating in August, absorbing part of the production.
2. The number of packing plants allowed to export to China has increased. Currently, there are 35 certified plants," added Mrs. Vega. Nevertheless, Spanish pork exports are expected to remain at this level for a while due to the fact that freezing capacity has been reached.

| 1 | Industry | 2019-10-11 10:54:17 | 2025-07-30 22:15:48 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2383 | Spain is increasing its pork production | The European country hopes that this year it will set a stronger foothold in the Chinese market. |
Spain has managed to increase its pig production even if the producers have been losing money during the last two months of 2018. "We finished the year with a price of Mercolleida´s hog market, higher than what was expected, of € 1,038 / kg alive with an average weight of 113 kg of live weight. This price is below 1 - 2 cents of € of European competitors; but this difference is less than a year ago. Spain has had a higher price almost all year, only during the winter its price has been lower. Average prices in € / kg alive weight have been 1.13 in Spain; 1.10 in Germany, 1.08 in France and Holland.

We also finished and / or started the year with a value higher than a year ago of 0.023 €. As regards the slaughter weight, it is increasing year by year, in 2015 the average was 107.6 kg of live weight and 83.71 kg of carcass weight, while in 2018 it was 111.3 kg of live weight and 85.34 kg of carcass weight. With these sales price data and with the production cost forecasts of around 1.05 € kilo (according to SIP Consultores estimates), the producers have been losing for the last two months, but less than what had been thought to be. The production has increased and the sacrifices are going to be between 6 and 8% higher than those of the previous year. The meat industry has not been able to revalue meat in recent months but has increased the volume to compensate for this lack of price", explains Mercedes Vega, Genesus General Director for Spain, Italy & Portugal.
One major difference between Spain and the rest of Europe is that the Iberic country has not reported any increase of frozen meat stocks. "The Spanish meat industry continues to do a good job, being able to export all this production at competitive prices.

But despite the fact that the year 2018 has closed better than expected, the year 2019 begins with much uncertainty, on the one hand production has been increased but not enough to be able to supply the all new projects (for spring it is expected that new slaughterhouse of Binefar of the Pini Group will begin to operate). On the other the price of Mercolleida starts € 1,038 against € 1,015 over last year and the average weight of slaughtering is increasing", added Ms Vega.
Regarding exports, Spain is counting on the Chinese market to absorb some of its fresh meat and sausages derived from Spanish pork, including cured ham. Until now, only frozen or boneless meat could be exported and cured products with a minimum of 313 days of cure. This new agreement will open new opportunities for the Spanish pig sector and can give greater added value, allowing for higher quality products. "Spain in recent years has gradually been changing to make a finished pig with Duroc and producing meats with more quality in order to supply specific market niches. This opening of China is an opportunity for this type of Spanish products", declared Mercedes Vega.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-01-06 08:27:45 | 2025-08-01 20:21:57 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3791 | Spanish pork exporters to China have doubled in one year | The main pig producer in the EU is consolidating its position as the main supplier of pork in the Chinese market. |
Spain has now 57 pork processing plants authorized to export to China, according to data presented by the Ministry of Agriculture. The figure is double compared with the one reported last April (28) and helps consolidate Spain's position as the main supplier of pork in the Chinese market. 8 new Spanish plants have been approved for pork exports to China in the first week of April and others are expected to gain access in this market until the end of the year.
Since last year, Spain is the world's leading exporter of meat and pork products to China, ahead of Germany, Brazil, the United States or Denmark.
The main products exported are pork meat and offal, which have accounted for 55.3% of total agricultural exports from Spain to China in 2019 (in 2018 they represented 35.5% of the total). Last year, Spanish pork exports to China have worth €1.12 billion, double than the sum reported in 2018. For this year, analysts are expecting pork imports in China to reach a total volume of 5 million tonnes. Since January, China accepted to reduce the duties imposed on US pork imports in a bid to diversify suppliers of pig meat in the market. However, the COVID-19 pandemic is creating logistic disruptions for US pork exporters in their trade relations with China.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-04-15 08:01:19 | 2025-08-01 20:50:32 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5243 | Spain confirms bird flu outbreak on farm | 18,900 birds were culled to stop the disease from spreading. Europe is confronted with an AI epidemic that is no longer seasonal, warns experts. |
Spain has reported an outbreak of the highly pathogenic H5N1 bird flu virus on a farm north of Madrid, the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) said this week, adding to a wave of cases in Europe.
The outbreak started on January 13 on a farm of 18,900 birds in the village of Cantalejo, OIE said, citing a report from Spanish authorities. "The epidemiological survey conducted on the farm indicates that all the birds were brought onto the farm for fattening at the beginning of November 2021, with no animal movements outside of the farm since then," the report says. A restriction zone had been established around the outbreak.
According to the German animal health institute Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, the Highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) seen in Europe for the last two years is no longer seasonal, a fact that is sustained by the ongoing outbreaks reported in countries such as Russia, Ukraine, Poland, etc. The current wave started in October 2021 and has already impacted 30 countries in the region. German experts also warned that the end of the bird flu epidemic is not yet in sight. Prior to the outbreak reported by Spain, the situation in the EU is illustrated by the map below.

In France, a total of 2.5 million birds needed to be killed as the southwest of the country faces several outbreaks of bird flu. Around 1.2 million animals have already been culled, according to the French Ministry of Agriculture, and an additional 1.3 million still needed to be killed as a precautionary measure to tackle the virus.
The spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, commonly called bird flu, in Asia and Europe has raised concern among governments and the poultry industry after previous outbreaks led to the culling of tens of millions of birds and trade restrictions.
| 1 | Industry | 2022-01-21 10:08:50 | 2025-08-01 20:33:15 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3924 | 87% increase in Spanish pork exports to China | The COVID-19 crisis didn't have an impact on Spanish pork exports in the first quarter of 2020. |
Spain increased pork exports to China by 87% in the first three months of the year, according to data presented by INTERPORC's president, Manuel Garcia. "Demand by other countries has not been altered by COVID-19", he explained in a radio show in Spain.
The volume of pork exports to China for the first three months of 2020 have reached 238,000 tonnes, 87% over the figure reported in the same period last year, whilst the value has practically tripled, reaching a total of €550 million.
The domestic market shows resilience against the COVID-19 crisis, considers Mr Garcia, "although from March it has been more difficult due to the situation created by the pandemic, which caused the closure of the Horeca channel and therefore the drop in sales of certain products such as suckling pig or hams".
In his opinion, increased household consumption of pork in the second quarter has largely compensated for the losses reported in the foodservice channel, although, logically, there are some companies and subsectors that have suffered losses.
| 1 | Market | 2020-06-24 12:48:49 | 2025-08-01 22:26:38 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1421 | VIDEO: "In 2017, all the pork markets have consolidated" |
Spain is a new market for German pork producer SCHWEDE Fleisch who was present with its own stand at Alimentaria 2018 in Barcelona. The company is specialized in sausages and cold meats and is having an export ratio of about 95%.
"Only 5% of our products remain in Germany. That's the reason we are looking for international affairs. Alimentaria is a good platform to meet new clients. For us is a new market. We haven't been here before", explained Michael Stoter, Business Leading Associate at SCHWEDE.
In his opinion, 2017 was a good year for pork producers. "All the pork markets have consolidated in the last year. This year, circumstances are fine for our company and there is no trouble from outside. We are exporting to China, Hong Kong, Vietnam, Korea but we also focus on European countries", mentioned Mr Stoter in an interview for EuroMeatNews.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-06-13 10:56:05 | 2025-08-01 19:24:38 | Details Edit Delete | |||
4482 | 6 Interprofessional organizations and 21 companies are joining forces to reshape the meat sector. |
Spain is about to put €3.5 billion is a project that aims to reshape the entire food chain, from livestock farms to processing plants, through slaughterhouses, cutting rooms or the cold industry. The project is being developed by LLYC and coordinated by Fernando Moraleda, and the six Interprofessional organizations (INTERPORC, PROVACUNO, ASICI, INTERNCUN, AVIANZA and INTEROVIC) have been the facilitators of the start of the project, which is currently in the hands of the following companies: Vall Companys, Grupo Fuertes, Campofrío, Grupo Jorge, Incarlopsa, Uvesa, Fribin, Grupo Coren, Covap, Grupo Empresarial Costa, Olot Meat, Faccsa, Famadesa, Sánchez Romero Carvajal, Montesano, Grupo Medina, Costa Brava Mediteranean Food, Celevant , Encinar de Humienta, Moralejo and Grupo Hermi, announced CdeComunicacion magazine.
A final form of the project will be presented to the Spanish government in April, which is expected to help in the co-financing of this project for its realization through European funds. New companies are expected to join the initiative in all its five areas of interest: depopulation, industry, circular economy, renewables and digitization of SMEs.
The objective is to structurally modernize the Spanish meat sector and therefore, some of its central points are:

- Traceability. The project's objective is to mainstream data management throughout the chain and to create a blockchain to give it greater added value, especially abroad.
- Innovation in the value chain.
- Increased competitiveness.
- Food safety and animal welfare.
- Increase employment among the younger population and among women.
- New business models.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-02-17 03:55:08 | 2025-08-01 21:32:42 | Details Edit Delete | |||
4254 | Spanish pork exports to China are growing | The Asian stated accounted for 42% in Spanish pork exports in the first 8 months of the year and the volume may increase due to the ban placed on German pork. |
Spain is expecting to increase pork exports to China by the end of the year, as the Asian state has put a ban on German pork due to the ASF situation in the country. In the first eight months of 2020, Spain exported 1,742,000 tonnes of pig meat (including offal) up 307,000 tonnes year-on-year. 726,000 tonnes were shipped to China, which is now the largest market for Spanish pork, accounting for 42% of the volumes exported. This is a different picture from the same period last year when pork exported to China accounted for 23% and it could change fast since German pork has lost access to the Chinese market in September. "Spanish pig meat exports staying within the EU have dropped back marginally so far this year to 734,600 tonnes, during the first eight months of trade. This is likely to be due to a combination of higher demand in China and lower demand within the EU following the Coronavirus outbreak," commented Charlie Reeve, AHDB analyst. Basically, only Italy and Poland have reported increased demand for Spanish pork this year, while France, Portugal, the UK and other European countries have reported a drop in imports. The average pig meat price in Spain was €157/100kg at the beginning of November, €0.17 above the EU quotation due to higher demand from third-markets. Currently, China accounts for 40% in the global pork trade but the national herd is recovering fast, in October official data showing that the swine inventory is back at 80% from the pre-ASF levels.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-11-16 08:15:06 | 2025-08-01 16:36:50 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3531 | Spanish beef enters the Japanese market | The Asian country imports more than 700,000 tonnes of beef per year. |
Spain is free to export beef, sheepmeat and goat meat in the Japanese market, following a rigorous sanitary inspection. Japan is the second-largest importer of meat and meat products in the world, which represents a great commercial opportunity for Spanish producers.
However, to export these products, the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries must authorize both the company and all those involved in the product manufacturing process: slaughterhouse, cutting room, cold warehouses and repackaging center.
At this time, Japan produces 470,000 tonnes of beef per year and imports more than 700,000 tonnes. "The profile of the meat demanded by the Japanese consumer fits perfectly with the offer that is offered from the Spanish beef sector: meat produced from cereals and oilseeds, from animals under 30 months, which guarantee juiciness, tenderness and excellent taste," commented Provacuno in a press release.
Another very important aspect that favours the commercial relationship of Spanish beef in the Asian country is the maintenance of the Free Trade Agreement between the European Union and Japan, which entered into force in early 2019.
To present the qualities of the Spanish beef, sheepmeat and goat meat Provacuno and Interovic will form a large delegation of companies to showcase their products at Foodex Tokyo 2020, the most important agri-food fair in Japan.
| 1 | Market | 2020-01-17 11:02:21 | 2025-08-01 21:28:46 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3023 | Spain has increased pork exports to Taiwan by 400% | Since 2014, Spanish pork exporters have managed to become the second largest supplier of pig meat in the Taiwanese market. |
Spain is holding an 18% share of the pork import market in Taiwan, increasing its exports by 400% in the last 5 years, from 5,031 tonnes in 2014 to 20,998 tonnes in 2018 and from €6.5 million to €46.6 million, according to data presented by INTERPORC.
Taiwan has one of the highest per capita consumption of pork in the world and increasingly needs imports from other areas than Asia to meet demand due to the ASF threat existing in the region.
This represents a good opportunity for large players in the global pork industry to set a stronger foothold in this market. This year, at FOOD TAIPEI fair, Spanish interprofessional association INTERPORC along with 5 Spanish pork producers have organized a an extensive program of activities such as show-cookings with the best Spanish pork, by Julio Li, prestigious Taiwanese chef Hidden by DN restaurant, owned by Daniel Negreira (one Michelin star in its restaurants in Taiwan), or ham tastings carried out by the master cutter, Antonio David Sánchez, sub-champion of the Interporc Spain International Ham Cutters Competition 2018.

Last year, Canada was the main supplier of pork for Taiwan (36,000 tons of pork), while the third place is held by Denmark (12,199 tons). The first shipments are expected to be sent in Japan in the next three or four month as bureaucratic procedures are still to be overcome.
For the pork sector, the perspective is even brighter as the tax levied on this product makes it more competitive in the Japanese market. "The drop was spectacular, we are talking about 4.26 euros per kilo last year to one euro this year, and we are more competitive in year one of the agreement," explains Daniel de Miguel, director of Spanish professional association Interporc.
In fact, the competition is so fierce that US Meat Exporters Federation (USMEF) President and CEO, Dan Halstrom, pointed out the need for a trade agreement between the US and Japan, the largest value destination for US pork and one of the world’s most competitive markets.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-03-19 04:48:04 | 2025-08-01 19:30:31 | Details Edit Delete | ||

Increased demand for pork from China and the ongoing trade war between Washington and Beijing is helping Spanish producers and exporters to set a stronger foothold in this market.
"In quarter two, Spanish pig meat (and offal) exports strengthened by 11% compared to the year before. Growth was only 4% in Q1. For the first half of the year overall, volumes were therefore 8% higher at 1.08 million tonnes. The growth was primarily driven by increased demand from China, due to the ongoing ASF crisis. The value of Spanish exports in the first half of the year totaled €2.64 billion, up 12% from a year earlier.

Expansion in the Spanish pig herd has boosted production by 2% (+48,500 tonnes). As such, more pork has been available for export in the first half of this year. When converted to carcass weight equivalent, exports are around 40,000 tonnes higher. In product weight, the increase is much larger (+76,000 tonnes), as much more offal has been exported this year", commented Bethan Wilkins, AHDB analyst.
Meantime, pork imports have declined by 10% (8,700 tonnes) in the first half of the year as the increase in production has also covered a part of domestic demand for pig meat.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-09-06 11:43:32 | 2025-08-01 08:22:09 | Details Edit Delete | ||
