7132 INTERPORC highlights the opportunities that the pig sector offers for the young generation The Interprofessional of the White Coated Pig (INTERPORC) participates and supports, since its creation, the training of specialists in the pig sector taught in the Master in Pig Health and Production organized by the University of Lleida, the University of Zaragoza and the University of Madrid.
In it, in which nearly 400 students have already participated, the director of INTERPORC has highlighted the attractions and opportunities that the pig sector offers for the youngest. In fact, 98% of the students of this master's degree currently work in the pig sector, more than 50% in production companies, 20% in nutrition , 15% in consulting, and another 15% in health.

Spanish pork is "a world leader and a strategic sector for the Spanish economy, it creates employment and contributes to structuring the national territory by offering opportunities to young people in rural areas", Herranz explained.

In addition, he added the main challenges that "they will have to face in the coming years and that will be related to sustainability, animal welfare, health, communication and the international market".

During his speech, Herranz also showed the students the importance of the Interprofessional as representatives of the entire value chain of the white pork sector. He described some of the actions developed in its little more than ten years of operation and made available to the students all the technical documentation prepared since its launch.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-02-22 00:15:50 2025-08-14 22:57:25 Details Edit Delete
7225 B+ Animal Welfare Commitment, the seal that places Spain at the global forefront The Interprofessional of White Coated Pigs (INTERPORC), like the sector it represents, is firmly committed to animal welfare. One of the best examples of this commitment to excellence is the voluntary nature of the 'B+ Animal Welfare Commitment' seal.
No company is obliged to undergo audits that certify that it exceeds the tough requirements of the IAWS Technical Regulation for animal welfare and biosafety. And yet, more than 60% of Spanish white-coated pork production is currently certified.

In total there are 163 certified operators and more than 7,700 farms, information that can be consulted with complete transparency on the website: https://www.bienestaranimalcertificado.com/ .

Thanks to the commitment of these companies, and the positive response and support of large distribution chains, today millions of consumers throughout Spain have animal welfare certified meat at their disposal.

What distinguishes the B+ Animal Welfare Commitment seal?

There are three main arguments that create the distinctive character of the seal created by INTERPORC:

Firstly, the already mentioned voluntariness of the pork sector , which self-imposes to comply with animal welfare conditions higher than those established by law.

Second, it has been prepared by a Scientific Committee of recognized prestige in animal welfare.

Finally, it is certified by accredited external entities.

The modern, precision livestock farming that characterizes Spain's white-coated pork sector works according to the European production model, one of the most demanding in the world. However, when you have a calling to be a leader, conformism has no place.

It is necessary to go even ahead of the demands of society and legal requirements. This is what the INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain (IAWS) Technical Regulations do, which sets out the conditions that must be met to obtain the seal, and is even more demanding than Spanish and European legal regulations.

This imposes an additional effort and, let us not forget, voluntary, in such important issues of food production as traceability, biosafety, animal health and sanitation, food safety, adherence to the National Antibiotic Resistance Plan and the accommodation of the animals.

In this way, companies that are certified incorporate into their work system a holistic vision of animal welfare that benefits them and drives them in their search for excellence in all areas.

INTERPORC brought together a Scientific Committee of animal welfare experts to develop the INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain (IAWS) Technical Regulations. A committee of which today 19 institutions from the university and research fields are part.

These experts are the ones who guarantee the seriousness of the regulation, as well as its transparency and scientific rigor, in addition to being responsible for keeping it updated. That is, it responds at all times to the growing social and legal demands related to animal welfare.

In its work, the committee followed the guidelines on animal welfare of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHO), which describes it as the physical and mental state of an animal in relation to the conditions in which it lives and with respect to five freedoms: to be free from hunger, thirst and malnutrition; free from fear and anguish; free of physical and thermal discomfort; free from pain, injury and disease; and free to manifest natural behavior.

In addition, they established eight control areas that cover all aspects related to the breeding and development of animals, transportation and slaughter, covering the entire life of the animals.

The maximum credibility and transparency of the entire process is obtained by the fact that, to obtain the seal, compliance with the Regulation must be verified by a certifying company outside the pork sector and accredited by the National Accreditation Entity (ENAC), which in turn will supervise the work of the companies through its demanding evaluation process.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-03-18 00:08:46 2025-08-15 01:24:02 Details Edit Delete
8178 PROVACUNO promotes Spanish beef in Morocco The Interprofessional Organisation for Beef (PROVACUNO) has travelled with a group of Spanish beef exporters to a meeting with Moroccan importers, organised together with the Economic and Commercial Office of Spain in Casablanca.
The event was attended by around 20 Spanish companies, who were able to connect with a similar number of Moroccan buyers, during a day in which a presentation was made of the distinguishing characteristics of our meat, such as its tenderness, juiciness, excellent flavour and low fat content, the result of a process of breeding young animals that are fed with cereals and oilseeds of the highest quality and in strict compliance with the regulations of the European Production Model.

The programme, which included interviews between buyers and exporters, concluded with a cocktail party in which Spanish beef was the star.

The action was completed with a visit by the Spanish delegation to a Moroccan slaughterhouse.

It should be noted that, in order to regulate supply in the face of increased demand during Ramadan, which this year begins on 28 February, Morocco authorised the import of fresh beef and lamb from Spain at the end of October, in addition to the exports of live cattle that our country had already been making to Morocco.

According to data from the Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, between January and November 2024 beef exports have increased by 4% compared to the same period in 2023, while the value of exported production has increased by 12% in the case of meat and 1% in the case of live animals. However, estimates for the month of December indicate that final exports have exceeded 4,000 tonnes, which would represent an increase of almost 50% this past year. Morocco and Algeria are two of the countries where demand has increased the most.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-02-06 00:05:58 2025-08-14 16:49:07 Details Edit Delete

6271 Slices of Happiness lands at Cherry Blossom Watch in Washington DC The interprofessionals ASICI and INTERPORC are developing a joint promotional action called “ Slices of happiness” in the United States.

The actions organized in Washington on these dates have coincided with Cherry Blossom Watch, a festival that takes place every year in the US capital around the part of the Tidal Basin, in West Potomac Park.

The tradition of this annual festival comes from the gift made in 1912 by the mayor of Tokyo, Yukio Ozaki, to the United States to increase friendship and strengthen the relationship between both nations.

And although it may seem surprising, cherry blossoms and Spanish Ham have more in common than meets the eye. 2702 Turkey contaminated with salmonella discovered by FSIS The investigation follows a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Schwarzengrund illnesses involving 5 case-patients from 2 states.
35 tonnes of raw ground turkey products delivered on the US market since July last year are recalled due to contamination with Salmonella Schwarzengrund, announced the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
The prepacked raw ground turkey was produced by Butterball on July 7, 2018, and shipped to institutional and retail locations nationwide. The problem was discovered by FSIS and public health partners started an investigation on a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Schwarzengrund illnesses involving 5 case-patients from 2 states. Wisconsin collected three intact Butterball brand ground turkey samples from a residence where 4 of the case-patients live. The case-patients and ground turkey Salmonella Schwarzengrund isolates are closely related, genetically.
FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness.
    Industry 2019-03-14 08:21:16 2025-08-14 01:05:33 Details Edit Delete

Sasha’s Fine Foods, in partnership with HCC, have been working on Welsh Lamb promotions around the Diwali festival in November to raise awareness of the brand in the Singapore market.

The investment in building new exports in Asia has been supported by the Welsh Government’s Enhanced Export Programme, which has enabled HCC to undertake more work in emerging markets alongside supporting existing customers in the UK and Europe.
Demand for lamb in Asia was projected to grow quickly due to rising affluence, tourism, and a growing population. According to figures presented at the recent HCC conference in Builth Wells, the market in the region could grow by 2% a year.
The Cabinet Secretary for Energy, Planning and Rural Affairs, Lesley Griffiths, said: “The Welsh Government is investing £1.5 million (€ 1.7 million) over three years in helping HCC and Welsh processors to build on the successful red meat export trade and support the industry through the uncertainty of Brexit.

Global patterns of demand show Asia is likely to be a more important market over the coming years. "We were pleased to join Welsh processors in Singapore earlier this year to explore the potential of this market. The product was very well received. Sasha’s Fine Foods is an excellent new customer for our premium quality Welsh Lamb, and I’m sure there’s more potential in the growing foodservice sector in Singapore and the wider region", he mentioned.
In April, Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) and Welsh meat processing companies attended the important Food and Hotel Asia (FHA) exhibition in Singapore and following contacts made at the event, PGI Welsh Lamb is now a firm favorite among the offerings of a high-end retailer. "Coming from the UK, I am always looking for more great quality products from home, so I had no hesitation in taking up the opportunity to sell Welsh Lamb here in Singapore. 2660 Vion will switch to an integrated production system in Boxtel
Until mid-2021, Vion intends to modernise and expand its production facility in Boxtel with a total investment of €35 million, announced the Dutch company in a press release.
The plan is to move some of the activities related to 'fresh' pork products from its location in Scherpenzeel to Boxtel. "This concerns the processing of middles, internal logistics and other fresh activities (such as the production of spare and belly ribs). Organising these activities under one roof – together with the existing slaughter and processing activities in Boxtel – will improve logistics to a great extent. It will shorten the supply chain, which will result in an improvement in the quality and freshness of the meat and a more efficient production", said the company.
The integrated system could limit the number of transport movements by more than 1 million kilometres per year, according to the estimates done by Vion. Traffic flows from and to the production location Boxtel will be organised and regulated as optimally as possible, additional parking facilities will be created and extra measures will be taken to limit noise nuisance. "This investment in a more integrated production is an important step for Vion. It will improve our international competitive position and the quality of our products. Thanks to the careful approach, we limit the nuisance for neighbours to a minimum and it will contribute considerably to making the production of meat more sustainable. Optimising the production chain is one of the focal points in our strategy,", explained John de Jonge, COO at Vion Pork.
The investment will not have an impact on the number of pigs processed in Boxtel; the supply of pigs will remain the same. 120 employees who are connected to ‘fresh’ activities at Vion Scherpenzeel will be relocated within the Vion locations in Boxtel, Apeldoorn and Groenlo.
    Industry 2019-03-05 08:39:39 2025-08-14 19:31:23 Details Edit Delete
