4405 Mitsubishi enters the cultured meat market The Japanese corporation signed an MoU with an Israeli firm to produce and distribute lab beef steaks in the Asian country.
A partnership between Israel-based cellular agriculture startup Aleph Farms and the Mitsubishi Corporation’s Food Industry Group allows the Japanese company to have access to the technology to create lab-grown meat and distributed in the Japanese market. Under a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) agreement signed this month, the Israeli part will provide its BioFarm manufacturing platform for use of cultivating whole-muscle steaks on a large scale, while the Mitsubishi Corporation will provide its expertise in biotechnology processes, branded food manufacturing, and local distribution channels in Japan.
"The MoU with Mitsubishi Corporation’s Food Industry Group marks an important milestone for us, as we methodically build the foundations of our global go-to-market activities with selected partners. The cooperation demonstrates Aleph Farms’ strategy of working together with the food and meat industries to ensure a successful integration of cultivated meat within the ecosystem while maximizing the positive impact we make. We are excited to bring cultivated meat production closer to the Japanese market," Aleph Farms Co-Founder and CEO Didier Toubia said.
The Israeli firm produced its first cell-based steak in 2018 and since then the startup has increased the portion of the meat produced in a lab, making it viable for large scale production and commercialization. The partnership is considered to help Japan reach its climate target goals over the next 10 years and to help the country become more protein independent.

Currently, Aleph Farms and the Mitsubishi Corporation are part of the “Cellular Agriculture Study Group,” a consortium implementing policy proposals under the Japanese Center for Rule-Making Strategy in an effort to help define the standards around the emerging industry and help slaughter-free meat overcome the hurdle of regulatory approval, informs the VegNews magazine.
    Industry 2021-01-11 12:39:16 2025-08-11 12:58:52 Details Edit Delete

7935 JBS Fund and Basa sign agreement for credit to small producers in Pará The JBS Fund for the Amazon and Basa (Banco da Amazônia SA) signed, a technical cooperation agreement aimed at facilitating the application of resources from the National Program for Strengthening Family Farming (Pronaf) in southeastern Pará. The partnership was celebrated during the panel "Amazon in Our Hands: How We Can All Contribute", held by the bank during COP 29.
The partnership aims to facilitate access to Pronaf Mais Alimentos credit for 1,500 family farmers, initially in the cities of Novo Repartimento, Pacajá and Anapu, located in the Transamazônica region of Pará. The expectation is to raise up to R$90 million, considering the profile of this public. In the same region, RestaurAmazônia, the largest family farming project in the Amazon, is being developed.

Since 2021, the initiative, led by the Solidaridad Foundation with the support of specialized technical assistance, has promoted territorial development and productive restoration on small properties. The focus is on the implementation of cocoa agroforests, integrated with livestock farming with rotational grazing. Over five years, the project will receive a total investment of R$25 million from the JBS Fund for the Amazon, with co-financing from the Elanco Foundation.

By COP30, the goal is to benefit 300 families from the project. The individual limit provided for in Pronaf Mais Alimentos is R$250,000, depending on the technical proposal, for pasture recovery activities, implementation of weeding and infrastructure to increase the number of animals per hectare.

The acquisition of cattle may be financed through another credit operation, with a total term of up to ten years, with rates between 3% and 6% per year. The agreement aims to encourage environmental regularization and traceability of properties through the recovery of pastures, diversification of production systems and intensification of livestock farming, seeking to promote more sustainable and productive models in conjunction with investment financing.

Through the partnership, Banco da Amazônia is committed to prioritizing the evaluation of technical proposals and the release of resources for small producers of RestaurAmazônia. In addition, the bank will provide human resources for training, conduct technical-economic analyses of producers and, together with the JBS Fund, define the most appropriate production systems to meet the specific needs of the beneficiary families.

In turn, the JBS Fund for the Amazon will continue to invest in supporting the recovery of pastures, the implementation of intensified production systems, as well as productive diversification with investment financing through Pronaf Mais Alimentos.

The director of the JBS Fund, Andrea Azevedo, points out that the agreement is an important step towards including small livestock producers in the Amazon in a low-carbon chain: “This group does not have the resources to invest in restoring pastures. Therefore, when the soil is depleted, the alternative is to open up new areas of forest. Most end up deforesting because the math doesn’t add up and, therefore, they are left out of this chain. The goal of the partnership with Basa, together with the RestaurAmazônia project, is to overcome this economic barrier, making the property more productive and profitable in the medium and long term, in addition to engaging producers in forest conservation, making them independent and self-sustainable. ”

The president of Banco da Amazônia, Luiz Lessa, recalls that the seed of the partnership was planted at COP28 in Dubai: "In one year, we discussed how we could work together to promote family farming and develop projects so that small agricultural and livestock producers could have access to technology and technical assistance to improve productivity in a sustainable way. We celebrated the consolidation of work that began a year ago and we will celebrate, at COP30 in Belém, a project that changes the lives of people in the Amazon".

Productive restoration model

From 2017 to 2023, 5% of settlements, which represented only 8% of the biome, were responsible for 65% of deforestation in settled areas and 17% of vegetation loss in the Amazon. The data, presented in an October study by CPI/PUC-Rio and the Amazônia 2030 project, suggest that deforestation is influenced by external factors and broader dynamics, which affect the opening of areas both inside and outside these regions.

The Superintendence of Southern Pará, which covers 505 settlements, accounts for 55% of deforestation in just 25 of them. Furthermore, 35% of forest loss in the region is concentrated in four Settlement Projects (PAs): PA Tuerê, PA Rio Cururuí, PA Rio Gelado and PA Pombal. On the banks of the Trans-Amazonian Highway, a region historically marked by deforestation, small producers face challenges such as a lack of specialized technical assistance, low productivity and limited access to credit. These factors increase pressure on the forest, driving the expansion of deforested areas.

RestaurAmazônia includes families in these critical areas in a sustainability agenda. Since 2021, the project has involved almost 1,200 families from Novo Repartimento, Anapu and Pacajá. To date, 44 thousand hectares of land are under good practices. More than a thousand hectares of Agroforestry Systems have been implemented and there has been a 47% increase in family income.

According to Paulo Lima, Cocoa and Livestock Manager at the Solidaridad Foundation, the project has managed to engage families in forest conservation. “With technical assistance, Tuerê, in Novo Repartimento, one of the largest rural settlements in Latin America, for example, has emerged from a history of degradation to become a global producer of fine cocoa ,” he says.

For Lima, access to credit is a crucial factor in strengthening actions in the region. "Through credit, producers can invest in the transition to more sustainable production models. Pronaf is one of the most relevant credit lines, as it is public in nature and offers conditions that are more suited to the needs of farming families. However, there are challenges to be overcome, such as the compliance criteria required by the financial institutions that operate the program, which require proof of land ownership and the need for guarantors. With this partnership, we hope to simplify this process", he said.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-11-21 00:05:16 2025-08-11 08:14:02 Details Edit Delete
8655 Global meat consumption will grow by 47.9 million tons by 2034 The joint OECD and FAO report forecasts global meat consumption will grow by 47.9 million tons between 2025 and 2034, with an annual per capita increase of 0.9 kg in edible retail weight. Poultry meat will lead this expansion, driven by its low cost, favorable nutritional profile, and smaller environmental footprint. By 2034, it will account for 45% of the meat protein consumed worldwide.
Asia and Latin America will boost production

Global meat production will reach 406 million tons in 2034, 13% more than in the base period. Asia will account for 55% of the growth, led by China, India, and Vietnam. Latin America will strengthen its position thanks to its advantages in land, feed, and genetics. Poultry meat will be the main driver of the increase, with a growth of 28.5 million tons.

Demands for sustainability and animal welfare are growing

In high-income countries, concerns about animal welfare, health, and the environment are slowing per capita consumption of meat, especially beef and pork. This trend has consolidated the preference for poultry, perceived as more sustainable and healthier.

In Canada and the EU, total per capita consumption is projected to stagnate or even decline.

Productivity improves, but emissions continue to rise

Improvements in reproductive efficiency, slaughter weight, and yield will allow production to increase without increasing emissions. Even so, greenhouse gas emissions associated with meat production are expected to grow by 6%, compared to a 13% increase in total production.

Beef will continue to be the largest source of carbon emissions, although advances in genetics, nutrition, and livestock management will moderate its impact.

China reduces its weight as an importer

China's share of global meat imports is expected to fall from 20% to 16% by 2034 , transforming trade flows.

This reduced dependence has reduced pork production in the main exporting countries. Even so, global exports are expected to grow again after two years of decline and reach 40.2 million tons in 2024, with Brazil and Australia breaking records.

Price divergence between ruminants and non-ruminants

Nominal beef and lamb prices will rise in the short term due to the slow recovery of inventories. On the other hand, pork and poultry prices will fall due to increased supply and weaker Chinese demand.

In the medium term, real prices for all meats will tend to decline, driven by productivity improvements and lower feed costs.

Biosecurity and climate change, key risks for the sector

The report warns about the impact of outbreaks such as African swine fever, avian influenza, and foot-and-mouth disease, which continue to affect production and trade. It also warns that climate policies, carbon taxes, and restrictions on antibiotic use could increase operating costs and affect the competitiveness of the global meat sector.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-07-22 00:15:49 2025-08-11 12:53:50 Details Edit Delete

4295 Trade issues still worrying for the UK The kingdom depends on beef and pork imports and is going to feel the impact of a no-deal Brexit on exports.
Self-sufficiency on meat is a hot topic nowadays in the United Kingdom as Brexit is just 36 days away. The impact of a no-deal Brexit is going to be felt hard by the consumers and meat industry representatives, argue AHDB and IMTA. "We know roughly what the certificates will look like; what TRQ admin will be; rates of vet checks for EU-GB imports or which health & ID marks to use", complains IMTA in a Twitter post. At the same time, officials from AHB are talking about low self-sufficiency on some products, such as pork or beef. "Self-sufficiency is important in regards to EU exit for two main reasons. Firstly, under no-deal, what impact will import tariffs have on trade and domestic prices? Secondly, it may affect the industry’s ability to feed the nation and to produce the kind of products that we love to eat. For beef and pig meat we are net importers, with self-sufficiency levels of 75-80% and 60% respectively," mentioned AHDB Head of Market Specialists, Chris Gooderham.
At the same time, the current production levels on sheepmeat give the impression that the UK is 100% self-sufficient. "Unfortunately, things are never quite so simple. The key challenges for lamb are:
- Carcase balance – UK consumers demand legs of lamb, and we do not have enough domestic production to satisfy that demand. So we import legs, and export whole or half carcases.
- Seasonality - UK production of lamb is very much focused towards the end of the year, peaking in October. However, demand is considerably flatter through the year, with spikes seen around Easter and Christmas.
- The imbalance of trade with the EU - Over 90% of exports are to the EU, but only around 25% of imports come from the EU, meaning the no-deal EU exit risk is on exports and not so much on imports.
This mean simply diverting home-grown lamb to satisfy domestic demand is not straight-forward. No-deal tariffs risk making UK lamb exports to the EU uncompetitive. Under such a scenario the industry will be looking for alternative outlets either domestically or further afield,", argues Mr Gooderham.
The current situation on Brexit is worrying for both parts involved in the process as well for major suppliers of meat in the EU such as New Zealand, Brazil, Thailand or Australia.
    Market 2020-11-26 12:35:57 2025-08-10 05:01:53 Details Edit Delete

6022 Hungary: Bird flu has appeared in another area of Békés county The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) confirmed the presence of the highly pathogenic avian influenza virus in a farm in Békés county that keeps about 2,000 mallard ducks. Protection and surveillance areas have been designated. The agency also confirmed the disease in birds kept in captivity at an animal shelter in Budapest.
The disease appeared in Battonya, an area of Békés County that has so far been free of bird flu. The Nébih laboratory showed the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the samples taken before transport to the slaughterhouse in the colony with almost 2,000 mallard ducks. The caretakers did not observe any symptoms of the disease in the animals.

The animal health experts took the necessary epidemic prevention measures, among other things, they designated the protection and observation area. In the free areas of Bács-Kiskun and Csongrád-Csanád counties, the previously introduced restrictions and mandatory swab tests are still in effect. In addition, swab tests are mandatory throughout the country before the technological movement of waterfowl.

In recent days, birds kept in captivity at an animal shelter in Budapest have also experienced sudden death. The Nébih laboratory confirmed the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the samples. The Nébih laboratory finally confirmed the presence of the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the herd.
Animal health experts have started to eradicate the affected herd, and a 3 km radius protection zone and a 10 km radius observation zone have been designated around the farm.

In the free areas of Bács-Kiskun and Csongrád-Csanád counties, the previously introduced restrictions and mandatory swab tests are still in effect. In addition, swab tests are mandatory throughout the country before the technological movement of waterfowl.
Nébih's laboratory also detected the presence of the virus in wild bird excrement samples collected in Debrecen. These results also support the fact that keeping flocks closed and strict adherence to epidemic prevention regulations is extremely important, as only these can reduce the risk of poultry flocks coming into contact with infected wild birds.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-12-28 03:02:40 2025-08-11 14:06:20 Details Edit Delete
8410 Hungary: Bird flu has reappeared in Hajdú-Bihar County The laboratory of the National Food Chain Safety Office (Nébih) has detected the presence of the bird flu virus in Hajdú-Bihar County. The affected flock is being eliminated and an epidemiological investigation is underway. Nébih draws attention to the fact that the disease may appear or reappear in areas not currently affected by bird flu, so please pay close attention to your flock.
Avian influenza was suspected due to increased mortality at a 700-head goose farm in the Komádi settlement of Hajdú-Bihar County. The Nébih laboratory detected the H5N1 subtype of the virus in the dead animals.

The affected herd is being depopulated and an epidemiological investigation is underway. A 3 km radius protection zone has been designated around the farm, and a 10 km radius surveillance zone has been established.

Nébih draws the attention of animal keepers that avian influenza may appear or reappear in areas that are not currently affected by the disease. Epidemiological discipline must not be relaxed anywhere, as the risk of avian influenza entering poultry farms can only be minimized by strict and consistent adherence to biosecurity measures.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-04-21 00:15:10 2025-08-11 13:34:24 Details Edit Delete
2027 20% of the Scottish fish farms fail to meet environmental standards The lack of monitoring or abstraction data being submitted on time has increased the number of aquafarms that are not compliant with the standards.
Meeting the environmental standards applied in case of fish farms may be the newest problem the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA) has to deal with.
A growing number of farms and the lack of monitoring or abstraction data being submitted on time has pushed down the level of compliance in 2017 to 81.14% from 85.75% registered in the previous year.
The number of failing aqua farms has risen from 50 to 56 in the last year and SEPA in considering a revised regulatory regime that will firmly strengthen the regulation of the sector and a comprehensive program of public engagement. 3894 Aussie beef exports on the rise The lack of some major competitors in the Asian markets has helped the sector to increase exports by 7% in May.
Even if a lack of supply in the Australian beef market remains present exports have increased in May by 7% compared to April. The impact of COVID-19 on the US beef industry has helped Australian producers to preserve their market share not only in the American market but also in some Asian countries due to an ease of competitive pressure.
Australian beef exports were steady in May, reaching 99,000 tonnes swt. Relative to 2019, beef exports are now down 3% for the year-to-May, announced Meat and Livestock Australia. Australian beef exports to the US jumped last month, climbing back to 21% of total Australian exports and reaching 20,500 tonnes swt. While year-to-May exports to the US are down 14%, this can mostly be attributed to the impact of COVID-19 slowing foodservice channels, the prominent destination for Australian beef.
Also, a comparable dip in the volume of US weekly beef exports has helped Australian beef to achieve better results in Asian markets. "The US is a major supplier of beef to South Korea, Japan, Taiwan and the Philippines, and with US exports struggling off the back of reduced production, this has been favourable towards assisting demand for Australian beef. For the year-to-May, exports to China and Japan have both grown relative to 2019, while other Asian destinations such as South Korea, Indonesia and Taiwan have dropped back slightly. Considering that NRLS cattle slaughter is running 10% back on last year, export volumes have been steady," reports MLA.
Other suppliers such as Brazil and India have been struggling with processing capacity as a result of COVID-19 implications. Lockdown measures in India have impacted exports of Indian Buffalo Meat (IBM), which has supported the demand for Australian beef in Indonesia. Indonesia accounts for roughly 5% of all Australian beef exports, and demand has remained steady, supported by the efficient manner in which Australian meat packers have managed processing and logistical challenges through COVID-19. Nevertheless, these trends will likely only remain in the short term as competitors are adapting to the coronavirus crisis.
    Industry 2020-06-11 05:59:13 2025-08-10 21:58:28 Details Edit Delete

7645 Australia: Restocker lamb prices surge by 105 percent The lamb market has experienced a meteoric price rise over the past month, nearing 900¢/kg carcase weight (cwt), according to Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).
