7364 New market opportunities for Brazilian meat exports The Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA) applauded the announcement made by the Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, with the completion of the process and official opening of the Bhutan market for pork from Brazil.
Bhutan is a new opportunity for Brazilian pork exporters

A country with almost 1 million inhabitants, according to local indicators, more than 20% of its population consumes pork.

Despite this, per capita consumption is still relatively low, not reaching 3 kilos per capita per year, according to FAOSTAT data. This is an indication of good potential for increasing consumption in the country, assesses the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin.

"The opening of this South Asian market comes at an important moment for the sector, which has sought to expand the capillarity of Brazilian exports, adding to other openings and expansions achieved by the excellent work of the Ministry of Agriculture team, under the leadership from Minister Carlos Fávaro, and from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs", he highlights.

Luís Rua, markets director at ABPA, also highlights the good competitiveness that will be provided to Brazilian proteins in the region, given the advantageous tariff conditions of the Bhutanese market.

"The import tariff for pork is similar to that established for chicken meat, around 10% of the value of the product shipped. It is an important advantageous condition to expand our presence in this market and in our role of supporting food security for the local population, always in complementarity with local producers", he highlights.

Opening of Lesotho expands Brazilian presence in the African market, highlights ABPA

The opening of the Kingdom of Lesotho to chicken meat from Brazil should positively influence the presence of Brazilian exporters on the African continent, according to the assessment of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA).

The approval of the International Health Certificate (CSI) for the Lesotho market was announced recently by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock.

With per capita consumption rates of around 11 kilos (FAOSTAT data), Lesotho has recorded increasing rates of protein consumption over the last few years.

"The positive outlook for consumption in the Lesotho market follows the increase recorded throughout 2023 in Brazilian exports to African countries. Therefore, the opening is especially celebrated by exporters at this time of positive indication for sales to the continent", analyzes the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin.

In the 12 months of 2023, the African continent imported 816.6 thousand tons of chicken meat from Brazil, a number 13.1% higher than that recorded in the previous year. Revenue, in the same period, grew 1.6%, with a balance of US$857.4 million.

"The African continent has received increasing attention from Brazilian exporters, a region that has registered increasing rates of urbanization and improved income, strengthening the country's partnership in supporting food security in African nations" mentions ABPA's director of markets, Luis Rua.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-21 00:15:23 2025-08-10 23:11:02 Details Edit Delete
7365 Marel: Chicken breast meat and its versatility With the exception of markets in Southeast Asia where chicken leg meat is preferred, breast meat reigns supreme. Breast meat is healthy, quick and easy to prepare and can be served in countless ways. It is infinitely flexible. Breast meat is particularly popular in North America, Europe and Oceania. It is wise to approach your breast meat production line with careful consideration, given its significant profitability within your process.
Breast meat reaches the consumer in many forms. These include a generous selection of fillet products to be cooked at home such as whole fillets, half fillets, tenderloins and diced breast meat for stir-fried oriental dishes. They also include reformed or muscle breast meat portions of identical shape and weight for the catering sector as well as cubes and strips to be processed industrially into a wide variety of tasty further processed products. Breast meat is also a key ingredient in the ever-popular chicken burger or chicken sandwich.

Standard or organic

Breast meat is eaten in the home, in quick service outlets and as the centerpiece of an elaborate dish in fine-dining restaurants. In the latter instance, breast fillet will probably have come from a label rouge bird or similar organically grown, more ‘exclusive’ chicken, moving away from the standard broiler. Many markets are seeing demand for such birds, known under various different market-specific names and labels, increase. In some markets, as for example, in the Netherlands, standard broilers are no longer sold in supermarkets.

Increasing weights

Broiler weights are increasing all the time, meaning that the fillets coming from them are often too big to fit onto a retail tray and have to be cut. Cutting has to be done in such a way that the fillet still looks “natural”, as consumers will not want to buy fresh product that has obviously been tampered with.

For a number of reasons, breast meat is often sold on retail trays of a specific price and weight. Fixed-weight/fixed-price packs are convenient both for the retailer and the consumer. Retailers order a fixed number of packs of the same weight and price; consumers know exactly how much they want to spend on their meal. The ‘problem’ passes to the processor, who will want to ensure that any giveaway, particularly of high-value breast fillet, is minimal, as underweight packs are strictly not allowed. Fortunately, Marel technology is now available to help ensure this. With the help of I-Cut122 TrimSort and RoboBatcher Flex, maximum utilization of the valuable deboned poultry breast meat is guaranteed.

Boost your margins

The retail sector still produces catch-weight packs, where a given number of breast fillets are packed onto a tray and where the weight of each fillet and therefore the total pack weight can vary. Product destined for the catering/quick service restaurant sector is packed bulk. As people in those markets where breast fillet is popular become richer, demand for the product itself and items made from it is sure to grow further. Investing in a Marel breast meat production line tailored to your market's needs is always a perfect fit and ensures a long-term profitability, boosting your margins.

A holistic approach

At Marel, we view the entire breast meat product flow, from deboning to packing, as an interconnected and integrated process. Every component in the processing line is part of a unified whole and works in harmony to achieve a common goal. In our case, that goal is achieving overall excellence in breast meat processing.
Key components in this holistic approach to breast meat processing starts with an AMF-i or an FHF FlexControl deboning system. Further down the line, other innovations and proven solutions, including Innova ProFlow Breast Meat software, SensorX, IRIS FI, I-Cut 122 TrimSort and RoboBatcher Flex, complete the breast meat process.

All this is more than just deboning chicken breast; we are connecting every aspect of the process to achieve the absolute maximum in quality, productivity and yield. Such a holistic approach succeeds in making innovative solutions all work together to elevate your performance.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-22 00:05:21 2025-08-10 01:30:53 Details Edit Delete

7367 Vion: Management change in Crailsheim Vion Food Group has appointed Thomas Beermann as the new Managing Director of its site in Crailsheim, the group’s only mixed plant for cattle and pig slaughtering in Germany.
As of 1 June this year, Vion will be handing over the management of the Crailsheim abattoir to new hands. Thomas Beermann will succeed Rainer Hartmann, who is leaving the company at his own request after 26 years to take up new challenges in the industry. Hartmann, who was previously managing director of the Vion beef plant in Waldkraiburg, moved to Crailsheim as managing director in 2022.

Now, 40-year-old Thomas Beermann is taking over the management baton. The “new man” at the helm of Vion in Crailsheim comes from Westphalia and has lived in Middle Franconia for 20 years. After working for two years at Vion’s Altenburg abattoir, he joined the sales team at the Crailsheim site in 2010 and then took over as Beef Sales Manager and Production Manager in the deboning department. With further management experience as Beef Sales Manager and Key Account Manager at Vion in Buchloe, Thomas Beermann took over overall responsibility for the Beef & Pork divisions in Crailsheim at the beginning of 2024, before the company appointed him as the new Managing Director there. This puts him in charge of Germany’s most successful mixed plant, which can produce 110,000 tonnes of pork and 45,000 tonnes of beef per year. More than 50 per cent of the fresh meat produced is marketed in the region, to local food retailers, butchers, caterers and regional industry. Almost 30 per cent of the meat produced in Crailsheim is exported.

"We are delighted to be able to place the responsibility for our Crailsheim site in the hands of Thomas Beermann, a proven expert from our own ranks. 7368 Saudi Arabia potential attracts British lamb and dairy exporters This week, British lamb and dairy businesses headed to Saudi Arabia in a bid to meet growing consumer demand and build on long term export opportunities, according to AHDB.
Exporters from both sectors have joined us at the Saudi Food Show in Riyadh from 21−23 May.

The show is Saudi Arabia’s leading event for food and beverage sourcing. It provides UK lamb and dairy exporters with the opportunity to meet key buyers from across the Middle East region.

Dr Awal Fuseini, AHDB Senior Halal Manager, said:

"Although Saudi Arabia is not our biggest market for lamb in the region, it has been identified by AHDB as one of the markets with strong growth potential for our exporters.

"With this in mind, participating in the Saudi Food Show is a great opportunity for us to meet with key industry buyers and emphasise our high-quality lamb production credentials with a view to increasing our presence in this growing market".

Last year, our research revealed that adapting to consumer buying behaviour could present opportunities for British beef and lamb exporters in the Middle East. The research explored consumer buying behaviour for red meat across the region, including Saudi Arabia.

Dr Fuseini added:

"Strong population growth, coupled with limited domestic production capacity and a high regard for our production standards presents an opportunity for quality British lamb to meet increasing consumer demand.

"A key factor in achieving this is understanding consumer trends to help enable our exporters align their products accordingly to satisfy what the market wants. Connecting with buyers at the Saudi Food Show plays a key role in enhancing our knowledge of the market and a greater understanding of how we can maximise opportunities there".

Saudi Arabia is also a large importer of cheese; this is the most valuable category in the dairy market, accounting for more than 30 per cent of total dairy spends.

Lucy Randolph, AHDB Head of Trade Development (Dairy), said:

"Saudi Arabia is the largest dairy consumer among the GCC countries, with high population growth and per capita helping drive increasing consumption of milk and other dairy products.

"While the dairy market in Saudi Arabia is highly competitive, there are opportunities for UK exporters, with strong demand for cheese and butter. The Saudi Food Show will provide us with a platform to get in front of key buyers, showcase our world class dairy produce and strengthen our foothold in this important market".
    Events adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-22 00:20:50 2025-08-10 00:59:14 Details Edit Delete
7369 Brazil: Pork shipments grow 7.8 percent in April Brazilian pork exports (considering all products, including fresh and processed) totaled 112.7 thousand tons in April, reports the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA). The number exceeds the total exported in the same period last year by 7.8%, with 104.5 thousand tons.
Revenue obtained from exports for the month reached US$241.8 million, a balance 3.8% lower compared to the same period in 2023, with US$251.3 million.

Considering the first four months of this year, pork exports totaled 402.1 thousand tons, a number 6% higher than the accumulated figure between January and April of last year, with 379.4 thousand tons. With these shipments, revenue recorded in the same comparative period reached US$839.6 million, 6.5% lower than the same period last year, with US$897.7 million.

In the ranking of the largest destinations, China remains in the lead, with 21.5 thousand tons imported in April (-35.9%), followed by the Philippines, with 16.7 thousand tons (+66.5%), Hong Kong, with 9.1 thousand tons (-34.7%), Singapore, with 8.1 thousand tons (+3%), Chile, with 7.3 thousand tons (+22.7%), Japan, with 7 thousand tons (+82.4%) and Vietnam, with 5.3 thousand tons (+99.1%).

"International demand has positively influenced prices throughout this year, which saw a significant recovery between January and April. At the same time, the good pace of exports should be maintained, establishing a level of shipments above 100 thousand tons", highlights the president of ABPA, Ricardo Santin.

Santa Catarina remains the largest Brazilian exporter of pork, with 62 thousand tons shipped in April (+9.1%), followed by Rio Grande do Sul, with 21.6 thousand tons (-7.5%), Paraná, with 17.1 thousand tons (+15.4%), Mato Grosso, with 4 thousand tons (+62.5%), and Mato Grosso do Sul, with 2.3 thousand tons (+2.2%).

"There is an increase in the pork exports from Brazil, which now reach other high-value-added markets more significantly, such as Japan and other Asian nations. Also noteworthy is the growing volumes shipped to the Americas, especially the United States, Puerto Rico and Chile, to some extent the result of new qualifications gained by the sector. In turn, even more positive expectations in the coming months in the Philippines, which recently accepted Brazil's pre-listing system. This movement towards diversifying destinations should continue throughout this year", analyzes ABPA's markets director, Luís Rua.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-22 00:25:03 2025-08-11 01:48:25 Details Edit Delete
7370 USMEF: Beef export value highest in nine months Beef exports were below last March’s large volume but export value was the highest since June 2023.
March beef exports totaled 108,218 mt, down 10% from the large volume posted a year ago but still the highest of 2024. Export value was $889.9 million, down slightly from a year ago (-0.3%) but the highest in nine months. January-March exports totaled 311,865 mt, down 4% from the first quarter of 2023, but export value increased 6% to $2.48 billion.

"Beef demand in the Caribbean was outstanding in March, and we continued to see a strong rebound in the Middle East as well as some positive signs in Korea and Japan, where the foodservice recovery is making progress", said USMEF President and CEO Dan Halstrom. "It’s a challenging situation in terms of supply availability, but the value U.S. beef commands internationally is very encouraging – as evidenced by March export value climbing to more than $450 per head".

March was one of the best months ever for U.S. beef exports to the Caribbean, where shipments climbed 16% from a year ago to 3,398 mt – the third largest on record. Export value was the second highest on record, climbing 12% to $31.1 million.

This performance was led by record-large exports to the Dominican Republic, which increased 17% from a year ago to 1,238 mt. Export value to the DR soared 30% to a record $15.4 million. First quarter exports to the Caribbean increased 18% in volume (9,037 mt) and 14% in value ($76.4 million). In addition to the DR’s strong performance, first quarter exports increased to the Netherlands Antilles, Leeward-Windward Islands, Cayman Islands, Barbados and Turks and Caicos Islands. Beef variety meats achieved dramatic growth in Trinidad and Tobago.

Following a down year in 2023, the Middle East region’s demand for U.S. beef rebounded impressively in the first quarter. March exports totaled 5,342 mt, up 30% from a year ago, while export value climbed 22% to $22.2 million. First quarter exports to the region increased 41% from a year ago to 14,562 mt, valued at $61.5 million (up 40%). Much of this growth is attributable to larger beef variety meat shipments to Egypt, where March exports were the highest since December 2022. But muscle cut exports also increased dramatically to the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Qatar and trended higher to Israel, Bahrain and Jordan.

Although March beef export volume to Mexico fell below the year-ago level for the first time in 15 months, the market still posted a solid performance. March shipments to Mexico totaled 16,628 mt, down 5% from a year ago, while export value increased 3% to $100.2 million. First quarter exports to Mexico increased 12% year-over-year to 56,499 mt, while export value jumped 18% to $333.5 million. Since gaining access last year, Brazil has emerged as the second largest supplier of beef to Mexico.

Other first quarter results for U.S. beef exports include:

March beef export value equated to $454.62 per head of fed slaughter, up 14% from a year ago and the highest since July 2022. The January-March average was $407.91 per head, up 9% from the first quarter of 2023. Exports accounted for 15% of total March beef production and 12.6% for muscle cuts, up from the year-ago ratios of 14.6% and 12.3%, respectively. First quarter exports accounted for 13.9% of total production and 11.6% for muscle cuts, both down slightly from a year ago.

Beef exports to leading market South Korea continue to trend lower than a year ago in volume but still achieve higher value. March exports to Korea totaled 22,105 mt, down 14% year-over-year, but value increased 5% to $211.2 million – the highest since December. First quarter exports to Korea were down 8% to 58,968 mt, while value increased 10% to $553.9 million. For chilled beef, exports were down 4% to 17,550 mt while frozen volume fell nearly 10% to 38,497 mt.

March beef exports to Japan also edged higher in value at $168.6 million, up 1% from a year ago and the highest since August. Although March export volume fell 7% to 21,412 mt, this was the largest total in 12 months. With the persistently weak yen weighing heavily on consumers’ purchasing power, first quarter exports to Japan fell 10% from a year ago to 62,692 mt, though export value was only down slightly (-1%) to $469.7 million. Japan’s central bank took actions over the past week aimed at bolstering the yen’s value, which had recently fallen to its lowest level versus the U.S. dollar since 1990.

Although March beef exports to Central America trended lower in volume (1,751 mt, down 15%), export value still increased 14% to $15.3 million. Led by robust growth in leading market Guatemala and Panama, first quarter exports to the region increased 4% year-over-year to 5,708 mt, while value climbed 15% to $42.5 million.

First quarter beef exports to Canada dipped slightly in volume (22,080 mt, down 1%) from a year ago, but export value increased an impressive 17% to $194.3 million.

Beef exports to Taiwan slumped in March to 3,802 mt, down 33% from a year ago, while value fell 27% to $40.5 million. This pushed first quarter exports to Taiwan 18% below last year’s pace at 12,112 mt, while value fell 6% to $132.7 million.

March beef exports to China/Hong Kong also trended lower in March, falling 13% from a year ago in volume (18,473 mt) and 11% in value ($168.1 million). First quarter exports to the region were down 7% to 51,122 mt, while value was down 2% to $469.8 million.

First quarter lamb exports lower in volume, but value trends higher

March exports of U.S. lamb were 35% below last year at 246 mt, while export value fell 5% to $1.5 million. However, this year-over-year decline was mainly due to a large volume reported for the Middle East in March 2023, as March exports to the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada all trended significantly higher than a year ago.

First quarter lamb exports fell 5% in volume to 819 mt, but value increased 19% to $4.7 million. Value growth was led by the Caribbean, Mexico and Canada, but exports also trended higher to Taiwan and the ASEAN.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-22 00:30:39 2025-08-11 06:13:12 Details Edit Delete
7371 JBS Global CEO defends Brazil-US alliance to tackle hunger and climate emergency During a summit in New York, Gilberto Tomazoni says that collaboration between the two countries can advance in sectors such as trade, investment and science.
The Global CEO of JBS, one of the world's largest food companies, stressed during the Brazil-USA Summit that the two biggest challenges of our time - hunger and climate change - must be tackled through an alliance between two of the world's biggest agricultural powers: Brazil and the United States. "Today 2.3 billion people suffer from food insecurity. The two countries can come together to share a benchmark of good practices", said Gilberto Tomazoni.

The executive mentioned a recent World Bank report ("Recipe for a Liveable Planet") which presents precisely the opportunity for this technological transfer. Tomazoni went further, suggesting that Brazil and the United States work together for “fair trade” to open up markets in the areas of food and biofuels. On both fronts, with a focus on increasing productivity. Without this, "we won't be sustainable", he said.

Brazil and the United States have a lot to share and exchange in activities such as precision agriculture and assistance to rural producers. Brazil also stands out in regenerative practices, such as no-till farming, crop rotation, intercropping and integrated crop, livestock and forestry (ILPF). "There is an opportunity to carry out research together. How much greenhouse gas is actually emitted by ILPF systems? At JBS, we have partnerships with research institutions in Wisconsin and Nebraska, but we can go further", said Tomazoni.

Ambassador Roberto Azevêdo, former director-general of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and partner at YvY Capital, supported the search for information on calculating emissions in Brazil's production conditions. "We need science. It's not possible for the reference for a cow's emissions to come from Europe, which lives in a totally different environment to Brazil". Azevêdo also pointed to the common interests of Brazil and the United States in the area of biofuels.

Tomazoni also recalled the possibility of working together on studies for more fertile and healthy soils, which are therefore better suited to boosting productivity. "I insist: we need to produce more with fewer resources so that 800 million people don't go hungry, as is happening in the world today". At the start of the panel, the Global CEO of JBS described the company's operations in the United States, which began in 2007. Of the US$ 73 billion in revenue last year, half came from the North American operation, currently spread across 21 states. Of the 275,000 employees that the company has globally, 70,000 are in the USA (Brazil has 155,000, which is where JBS employs the most).
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-23 00:05:39 2025-08-10 23:11:03 Details Edit Delete
7372 QMS: Tight market continuing to underpin farmgate prices as the new season begins After a firm start to the new season, prime lamb auction prices have made a strong impression at Scottish marts, averaging 436p/kg lwt in the second week of May, according to the latest market commentary from Quality Meat Scotland (QMS). Meanwhile, hogg values continue to hold close to the highs reached at Easter and Ramadan, clearing at 370p/kg lwt.
Iain Macdonald, said: "For new season lambs, this represents a year-on-year increase of 26% and an uplift of 54% on the five-year average, while hoggs were valued 35% higher than last year".

Tight domestic supply has been one of the factors supporting farmgate prices. Last year’s GB lamb crop was around 6% lower than in 2022 but, between June 2023 and February 2024, prime sheep slaughter at GB abattoirs had still risen marginally on a year earlier, highlighting an earlier marketing pattern.

Iain added: "This left fewer hoggs available at the peak of demand in March and April for Easter and Ramadan, and slaughter declined by 14% year-on-year over the two months. Given the 6% fall in the GB 2023 lamb crop and a 2.6% reduction in throughput between June 2023 and April 2024, it suggests that slaughter will have continued to decline on a year earlier in May".

Seasonal factors have tightened availability, as evidenced by data from Scottish marts. The number of prime sheep sold each week dropped to approximately 16,000 between mid-April and mid-May, down from a peak of around 26,000 per week in March. Although the availability of new season lambs is gradually increasing, their numbers remain very low. In addition, from mid-April to mid-May, the total number sold was 25% lower compared to the same period last year.

In addition to domestic production, the international trade balance has continued to contribute to a tight market. The volume of UK sheepmeat exported during Q1 2024 exceeded the level of imports, at 20,400t compared to 16,600t. This was even the case in March despite imports reaching a pre-Easter peak, although it should be noted that exports tend to consist of carcases whereas imports tend to be cuts of lamb.

Iain commented: "A notable feature of the UK sheepmeat market is that a significant rebound in imports from Australia and New Zealand at highly competitive prices has been absorbed by the market without any signs of dampening farmgate prices. This points to a strong level of demand".

GB retail sales data from Kantar has shown consistent year-on-year growth in spending on lamb and the volume sold since summer 2023, underpinned by a higher share of households buying lamb.

However, retail sales have been supported by lower retail prices and promotional activity, and higher import penetration at Easter. British households are clearly showing a renewed interest in lamb, but whether they would continue to do so if the significantly higher level of farmgate prices seen in 2024 was to result in a higher retail price point is a concern.

Iain said: "Looking forward, domestic supply is likely to remain tight until the 2024 lamb crop reaches the market in greater numbers, given the much smaller carryover of hoggs into this year. The market could become particularly tight in the first half of June as Eid al-Adha starts on 16 June, resulting in a surge in demand ahead of this festival.

"On the subject of new season lambs, limited availability at GB level is expected in the early part of the season because early-lambing flocks in southern England and Wales were reportedly hit hard by Schmallenberg. Meanwhile, given the extremely wet weather around the Easter weekend, mortality rates are thought to have been elevated in flocks lambing at this time. However, in Scotland, a considerable proportion of lambing takes place in the second half of April and into May, a period of much more favourable weather conditions. In particular, this suggests that there could be a stronger supply of store lambs from the hills this year".

The other variable influencing this year’s lamb crop will be the breeding flock last autumn. On one hand, ewe condition at tupping in autumn 2023 was much more favourable than in 2022, when there had been drought conditions, particularly in southern England and Wales, signalling the potential for a better lambing rate this year.

Iain added: "However, England’s Sheep and Goat Inventory results showed a 4% decline on a year earlier in the breeding sheep population, suggesting little room for an increase in lamb numbers before factoring in the expectation of increased mortality due to the weather in late-March and early-April.

"Unfortunately, no December sheep results have been published for Scotland, but the ewe flock in June 2023 was down by 1.7% on 2022, and the 4.1% reduction in the lamb crop signalled little potential for increased retentions to the breeding flock".

On the international trade side, while Australia and New Zealand’s production season has passed its peak, highly competitive prices are set to ensure that import competition remains considerable. However, a continued reduction in the EU ewe flock should ensure that UK export demand remains strong.

"Overall, the combination of tight domestic supply and strong demand, both domestically and internationally, is expected to continue supporting farmgate prices as the new season progresses", concludes Iain.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-23 00:10:47 2025-08-10 23:11:32 Details Edit Delete
7373 Cuban Sandwiches with US Pork a major hit in Japan A series of USMEF marketing initiatives for roast pork continues in Japan with a unique Cuban sandwich promotion at a popular festival in Nagoya.
A popular festival in Nagoya, capital of Japan’s Aichi Prefecture and home to 2.3 million people, hosted 150,000 visitors over three days to celebrate cherry blossoms and experience unique foods. USMEF extended promotional efforts for roast pork by partnering with four local sandwich shops to feature American-style Cuban sandwiches with U.S. pork.

Each of the four participating sandwich shops recorded record sales of their Cuban sandwiches, selling a combined total of 3,700 during the festival.

"The shops were happy about the results, with each selling all of their Cuban sandwiches. These promotions demonstrate the versatility of American pork, making it an ideal ingredient for roast pork and pulled pork sandwiches", says USMEF Japan Director Satoshi Kato.

To support the promotion of Cuban sandwiches at the festival and in other foodservice promotions in 2024, USMEF partnered earlier this year with the publisher of Japan’s most popular travel guide on a 16-page guidebook about the Cuban sandwich.

USMEF published a 16-page guidebook about the Cuban sandwich for Japan’s foodservice sector. The guidebook describes the sandwich, its cultural history and includes Cuban sandwich recipes from well-known restaurants. A special one-page leaflet with recipes was distributed to attendees during the festival.

"Our goal is for foodservice providers and consumers to think of American pork when they think of Cuban sandwiches", says Kato. "We had success with this approach during the ‘Roast Pork is American Pork’ promotions we conducted at retail and consumer activities during the year-end holiday season".
    Events adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-23 00:15:13 2025-08-10 20:02:15 Details Edit Delete
7374 Spanish Pork, ready to show its potential at SIAL China The Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC) is ready to play a major role at SIAL Shangai, which will be held in Shanghai from 28 to 30 May. This event is an exceptional opportunity to demonstrate the leadership of the Spanish pork sector in the international market, especially in China, a strategic market for Spanish pork where it has established itself as the leading supplier.
In 2023, Spain accounted for 20.95% of all Chinese purchases of pork products, surpassing other exporting countries. Fresh meat is the main product, with 294,885 tonnes exported for a value of 682.1 million euros, followed by offals and ham.

In order to consolidate this leading position, INTERPORC will gather in a 810 sqm pavilion 20 of the most important Spanish pork companies, which in total have a production capacity of more than three million tonnes per year, an export value of more than 3.8 billion euros and a total turnover of more than 11.5 billion euros.

In addition, the Spanish Interprofessional will organise several commercial and institutional meetings. Among these, the most notable will be the visit to the stand of the Spanish Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Luis Planas, for what it implies in terms of support for the sector from the authorities. This will be followed the same evening by an institutional dinner attended by the entire ministerial delegation.

Visitors to the fair will also be able to enjoy cooking demonstrations by chef Marcos Ramos, who will prepare various recipes using white pork. There will also be ham tastings led by master ham carver Raquel Acosta, who will demonstrate the quality and versatility of Spanish pork products.

These activities will allow INTERPORC to demonstrate the Spanish pork sector's absolute commitment to quality, sustainability and animal welfare, in order to strengthen its position as a world leader in the Chinese market.

<img 7377 USDA awards $300 million to diversify export markets for US agriculture Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack announced that the U.S. Department of Agriculture is allocating $300 million to 66 U.S. organizations, under the new Regional Agricultural Promotion Program (RAPP), to build demand for American food and farm exports in high-potential markets around the globe.
Secretary Vilsack launched RAPP in October 2023, authorizing $1.2 billion in Commodity Credit Corporation funding to help U.S. exporters expand their customer base beyond traditional and established markets, focusing on regions such as Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and South and Southeast Asia, where consumer demand and purchasing power are growing.

"USDA and the entire Biden-Harris Administration are focused on creating more, new and better markets for U.S. producers and agribusinesses, and exports are a critical part of that effort", Vilsack said. "By enabling U.S. exporters to expand their footprint in diverse and dynamic new markets, RAPP will help make them more competitive and resilient in an increasingly volatile global trading environment. We know the potential is out there, but it takes time and money to grow new markets. USDA is pleased to be able to provide the start-up capital to help tap into these opportunities, because if we are serious about reversing the decline of small and mid-sized farms, and building wealth that stays in rural communities, it’s crucial that we create and sustain diverse market opportunities abroad as well as at home".

The initial round of RAPP funding will help recipient organizations carry out hundreds of projects encompassing a wide variety of products and markets. For example:

The U.S. Meat Export Federation plans to expand its export efforts to new markets in the ASEAN region and throughout Africa, as well as enhance its investment in the convenience store segment in South Korea, Central America and Colombia.

U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) President and CEO Dan Halstrom:

"USMEF is honored to participate in RAPP and we thank Secretary Vilsack and the staff at USDA for their vision and leadership in implementing this program. The additional investment in foreign market development is very timely and will be especially helpful in expanding demand for U.S. red meat in emerging export markets. USMEF also appreciates the role Congressional leaders played in the development of RAPP. We thank them for their support of this program and for prioritizing Market Access Program (MAP) and Foreign Market Development (FMD) funding in the new Farm Bill".
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-24 00:15:31 2025-08-09 20:15:00 Details Edit Delete

This has been backed by the RSPCA in written evidence submitted to the House of Lords, which stated “New Zealand is the one country globally judged to have better farm animal welfare standards than the UK.

"The World Animal Protection’s Animal Protection Index rates New Zealand ‘C’ for farm animal welfare standards, compared to the UK’s ‘D’ rating. New Zealand is also among the lowest global users of antibiotics in cattle and sheep production due to our extensive outdoor farming practices.

New Zealand's sheep and beef sector is also a global leader in sustainable farming, says Mr Gowen.

A Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study of lamb by New Zealand Government science agency AgResearch in 2022 confirmed the carbon footprint of New Zealand beef and lamb is amongst the lowest in the world.

The study found that a kilo of New Zealand sheepmeat has a carbon footprint of just under 15 kilograms (kgs) of CO2 equivalent emissions per kilo. Meanwhile, the carbon footprint of New Zealand beef is just under 22kgs– making the country’s red meat among the most efficient in the world.

"The researchers, which compared New Zealand’s on-farm emissions to a range of countries’ footprints across the globe, concluded that when New Zealand beef or sheepmeat is exported, the total carbon footprint is lower or very similar to domestically-produced red meat in those nations".

Greenhouse gas emissions from New Zealand sheep and beef production have decreased by 30% since 1990. Trees on farms significantly offset remaining emissions.

Price differentials between UK and NZ lamb largely result from New Zealand's on-farm efficiency, not lower production standards, says Mr Gowen.

"Factors such as advanced sheep genetics and excellent pastoral utilisation contribute to this efficiency amongst a whole host of other factors.

"The complementary seasonal production of New Zealand grass-fed lamb and the United Kingdom’s grass-fed lamb ensures consumers have access to the best seasonal products year-round.

"This stabilises the market, supports price levels, and keeps lamb as a competitive product category against other protein sources, benefiting producers in both countries".
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-24 00:25:41 2025-08-11 00:10:01 Details Edit Delete
7380 Danish Crown: Increased sales in a difficult market Danish Crown Beef significantly increases sales of its own brands. However, the inflationary pressure of the past year has meant that it is primarily cheaper products and burger patties that find their way into the Danes' shopping basket.
Danes buy far more beef products with a Danish Crown logo on them. Danish Crown Beef has increased its sales of branded products - products with its own logos - by 150 percent in the first six months of the financial year compared to the same period last year.

"We have largely succeeded in gaining increased visibility in the cold counter. We are seeing a nice development, even though consumers have preferred our cheaper products for stews and burgers, while we have struggled to maintain the prices of the more expensive cuts such as tenderloin and beef fillet", says CEO of Danish Crown Beef, Finn Klostermann.

With increased sales of its own brands in the supermarkets, Danish Crown Beef continues to build on a good development, and the strategy of higher processing, which also aligns with the Danish Crown group's overall strategy, must be accelerated even more.

"There is demand for Danish meat and the good history of the products. We see that our unit owners are willing to invest in the green transition, and this will have a positive effect on the sale of beef. We must work purposefully to position ourselves in relation to imported meat on the Danish market. It requires additional marketing and innovation, but it is the way to create higher value for the products for the benefit of the farmer", says Finn Klostermann.

The development in the sale of products with a Danish Crown logo on them is very positive, says Group CEO of Danish Crown, Jais Valeur. He points out that this is a signal that the group strategy is working.

"A very nice piece of work is being done at Danish Crown Beef regarding branding and innovation. We continue to invest in that development, and we work hard to ensure that even more Danish consumers choose products from Danish Crown. Danish beef and veal in our brand is strong in the market, and we want to develop that position further", says Jais Valeur.

For the first six months of the financial year, Danish Crown Beef's revenue falls by six percent to DKK 2.95 billion, which is mainly due to lower selling prices for hides for leather production and lower selling prices for by-products. The lower turnover also means that the average settlement to the owners has fallen from DKK 31.7 per kg to DKK 27.9 per kg, which corresponds to 12 percent.

"We have been challenged by a weak leather market, which slowed down hard, especially within leather for the car market. At the same time, sales of by-products have been characterized by lower prices. We have also seen a different German market, where there is increased demand for German meat with a welfare history, and this has required investments, especially in the countryside, which the market is not fully ready to pay for, so it has also cost earnings", explains Finn Klostermann.

However, he sees an improvement in the market for skins in particular, which, like the by-products, is also on the way to a price increase.

"We must have raised the prices so that we can pay the farmer better. After a difficult winter, things are starting to brighten on several fronts. In the past month, we have delivered small increases in settlement, and we believe that we will see further improvements in the coming months as we raise the prices of all our product groups", says Finn Klostermann.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-24 00:30:03 2025-08-11 05:21:30 Details Edit Delete
7381 NZ: US demand for red meat helps offset weak Chinese market New Zealand exported red meat products worth $932 million during February, with demand from the United States helping to offset the weak Chinese market.
Overall, red meat exports in February were up 10 per cent on the relatively low export value recorded in February 2023, largely due to a rise in sheepmeat and beef exports, particularly to the United States.

Sheepmeat exports increased to nearly all major markets, apart from China where the volume fell by eight per cent to 19,401 tonnes.

Beef exports increased by 20 per cent overall to 48,431 tonnes. This was 15 per cent above the average for February exports over the last five years and included a four per cent increase to China.

The EU and UK markets saw an increase in both volume and value for beef. So far this year, New Zealand has exported 998 tonnes of beef to the EU, worth $19.8m, a 38 per cent increase in volume and 16 per cent increase in value compared to the first two months of last year.

The average free on board (FoB) value of beef exports to the EU is $19.83/kg, more than twice the $8.31/kg average for beef exports.

Meat Industry Association chief executive Sirma Karapeeva said increased export volumes to the US were helping to offset lower demand from China.

"In February, the US accounted for nearly the same proportion of overall exports as China - 28 per cent and 30 per cent respectively.

"However, the results from the high value EU market highlights how the limited quota for beef in the Free Trade Agreement is a real missed opportunity for companies to develop a valuable market to help boost economic returns for the sector and the country".

Sheepmeat
Sheepmeat exports totalled 41,850 tonnes. This was an 18 per cent increase on the low volume exported last February but was still below the average for February exports for the previous five years.

The value of sheepmeat exports increased by nine per cent, with an increase in the value of exports to most markets. China was the exception with the value of exports dropping by 24 per cent to $101 million.

Volumes to the US increased by 74 per cent to 4,262 tonnes with value up 54 per cent to $68 million, a record monthly volume and near-record value.

While the per kilogram value of exports has dropped from the high levels of last year, it demonstrates that there is still strong demand for sheepmeat in the US, even if cost-of-living pressures mean that consumers may be switching to more affordable cuts

Sheepmeat to the UK increased 41 per cent by volume to 3,316 tonnes and 35 per cent by value to $30m compared to 2023 but this was still only half the $59 million achieved in February 2022.

Beef
Beef exports increased by volume and value to most major markets. Exports to the US rose 43 per cent to 18,849 tonnes, just ahead of China at 18,649 tonnes. Value also increased by 20 per cent to $406m.

The US led the way with exports up 55 per cent to $162m, and exports to Japan were up 34 per cent to $26m. Despite the small increase in the volume of beef exports to China, the value dropped three per cent to $137m.

Exports to the UK rose 336 per cent by volume from the low pre-FTA February 2023 results to 408 tonnes, and 598 per cent by value to $6 million, making it the eighth largest beef market.

The Korean market was an exception with beef exports down 20 per cent by volume to 1,280 tonnes and 19 per cent by value to $10 million. Fifth quarter

The value of fifth quarter exports dropped eight per cent from last February to $166m. Exports of edible offal rose by 23 per cent to $32 million and hides and skins by 40 per cent to $26 million.

However, this was offset by decreases in exports of casings and tripe, which fell by nine per cent to $30 million, tallow, which was down 48 per cent to $21m, and blood products, which were down 30 per cent to $19 million.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-25 00:05:47 2025-08-10 23:11:06 Details Edit Delete
7382 ABP completes £24.5m investment in Scottish facility ABP Food Group (ABP) has today announced the completion of a £24.5 million investment in its beef processing facility in Perth. The investment includes a 2,800 square meter extension, along with significant refurbishment and upgrades to meat production and maturation areas, storage areas and staff facilities.
The project is supported by the Scottish Government’s Food Processing, Marketing and Co-operation grant scheme. The development has created 80 new jobs with an additional 42 jobs supported during the construction phase.

Commenting on the announcement, Bob Carnell, Managing Director of ABP’s UK Division, said: "We are delighted to welcome Minister for Agriculture, Jim Fairlie, to officially open our new facilities in Perth. The plant has been transformed into one of the most modern and advanced of its kind in the UK, and it will play a significant role as we develop further opportunities for Scottish red meat products in the retail and food service sectors throughout Scotland, across the UK and in export markets".

Minister for Agriculture, Jim Fairlie said, "I’d like to thank ABP for their commitment not just to Perthshire but to the whole of the Scottish agricultural sector. I am pleased that the Scottish Government could help fund these excellent facilities. They will ensure that Scotland maintains its reputation as the source of some of the finest red meat products in the world".

ABP has two other sites in Scotland, located at Bridge of Allan and Queenslie near Glasgow, which were acquired from Scotbeef last year. 7383 Danish Crown: Operations improved in a challenging half-year The course is right and the strategy is working, but increased interest costs and a challenging market for DAT-Schaub cast a shadow over good progress in Danish Crown's core business.
Completely in line with the strategy, in the first half of the financial year 2023/24, Danish Crown has increased sales to European customers within retail and foodservice. Market shares have been won, and at the same time earnings have improved through efficiencies in production.

However, the progress in the core business is diluted by rising interest costs and a decline in earnings in DAT-Schaub. After a number of years of massive growth, DAT-Schaub is hit by a depressed market for pig and lamb casings for sausage production, because due to inflation, consumers have largely bought cheaper sausages that are produced in artificial casings. At the same time, the prices of heparin for the pharma industry have fallen because healthcare systems around the world are reducing their stocks on the back of COVID-19.

"It is an account in which very much points in the right direction. Work is focused on delivering improvements. Our efficiency plan Horizon contributes with just over half a billion kroner at the moment, so we still need to raise around one billion kroner - or the equivalent of approx. one crown per kilos of pork - over the next 18 months. It is a pity that DAT-Schaub is facing headwinds right now, because together with the higher interest costs, it prevents us from taking a significant step forward", says Jais Valeur, Group CEO of Danish Crown.

The fall in inflation means that costs for packaging and energy are falling compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, labor costs have increased significantly, but Danish Crown has still managed to raise operating earnings (EBIT) by two percent.

Revenue falls from DKK 34.5 billion to 33.5 billion DKK compared to the first half of 2022/23. The lower turnover is mainly due to a decrease in deliveries of slaughter animals from the unit owners, as measured per kilo share, operating earnings have actually risen by 11 percent in the period.

The financial costs increase by 54 percent to net DKK 338 million and the tax payments are, after a reversal of a tax provision of DKK 80 million last year, back at a normal level. Therefore, the net profit is down from DKK 902 million to DKK 764 million.

"Despite the progress in our core business, our competitiveness is still not where it should be when it comes to paying the unit owners a competitive price for their pigs. However, this does not change the fact that we have received confirmation that the strategic direction is not only right, but also necessary for Danish Crown", says Jais Valeur.

In Danish Crown Beef, there is continued progress in sales to retail and foodservice. On the other hand, there is sharp competition on the German market, where Danish Crown operates two cattle slaughterhouses, and this costs earnings. At the same time, the global market for high-quality leather is affected by a slowdown, which affects Scan-Hide, which is among the world's leading suppliers of premium hides for the leather industry.

Swedish KLS delivers a stable result and in Polish Sokolów there are more positive trends towards the end of the half year with falling inflation and improved purchasing power among Polish consumers. However, earnings are still not satisfactory and were negatively affected during the period by a major factory fire in November. In the trading company ESS-FOOD, things are going well. A clear strategy of working purposefully with the best customers ensures stable earnings.

"When we look ahead, it is positive for our business that inflation has peaked. However, this does not change the fact that we must continue to improve efficiency in order to raise earnings, which is illustrated by the decision to close the slaughterhouse in Ringsted after the end of the six months. We don't have to keep our arms crossed, but the start-up of our new bacon factory in Rochdale, England, is proceeding as planned. We have heavy UK customers on board and will be at full capacity before Christmas. We are also looking forward to a summer when the football European Championship in Germany and the Olympics in Paris are expected to stimulate the consumption of our products and, at the same time, there are signs of an improvement in our exports to the high-priced markets outside Europe, so all in all there is reason for restraint optimism", says Jais Valeur.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-26 00:05:20 2025-08-11 07:15:01 Details Edit Delete
