4148 Four consecutive months of decline in Australian beef exports September beef exports were 73,000 tonnes, down 31% on year-ago levels, reports MLA.
Total beef exports have declined for the fourth consecutive month in a row, totalling 73,000 tonnes swt in September. This represents the lowest month of beef exports (excluding January due to processor shutdowns) since April 2017, which was a similar year of herd rebuilding, reports MLA. Year-to-September beef exports are back 11%. While these figures are subdued, it is important to recognise that 2019 and 2020 are very different years from a supply perspective. 2019 was a particularly exceptional year, with drought-induced turn-off resulting in heightened production volumes, which enabled exporters to respond to very high levels of international demand. This year, beef exports will remain subdued, constricted by a smaller herd and tightening slaughter levels, similar to 2015 and 2016, two years which also followed a substantial period of drought.
Japan remains the top destination for Australian beef, taking 20,500 tonnes swt in September. Reports indicate that foodservice demand in Japan experienced a low in April, however, has been on a gradual path of recovery since. The pandemic situation in Japan remains fluid, with daily new case numbers still counting several hundred, and consumers showing signs of ‘COVID fatigue’, with some reportedly not adhering to social distancing rules.

Competitor presence within China has continued to increase. In August, imports from Brazil and Argentina reached 88,000 tonnes swt and 45,000 tonnes swt, respectively. Meanwhile, China has placed temporary trade suspensions on several Australian export establishments, with this pressure impacting Australian export volumes. Beef exports to China reached just 10,000 tonnes swt in September, back from a colossal 28,500 tonnes swt shipped in the same month last year.

Beef export volumes to the US have also retracted over the past few months, down to 16,000 tonnes swt in September. A combination of increased competitor activity and a higher USD-AUD exchange rate will implicate demand for Australian product.
    Industry 2020-10-08 07:37:06 2025-07-30 08:13:16 Details Edit Delete
4150 Weaner prices in the EU are getting back to normal
Weaner prices in the EU market have got back to levels recorded before the rush on China's ASF crisis has started. The average price in the single market is now at €36/head, the lowest level recorded since November 2018. Although exports to China are still significant for countries such as Spain, Denmark and the Netherlands, the double impact of ASF in Germany and COVID-19 crisis has pushed the average price for weaners €5 below the 5-year average for the time of year.
"A significant weakening of the finished pig market has discouraged the demand for weaners at a time of year when prices are already often falling. The coronavirus pandemic has disrupted pork demand across the EU. More recently, Germany’s ASF outbreak has brought a new wave of downward price pressure, with the pork that would have been exported to China now trading on the EU market. Reports also indicate some countries, particularly Germany, have developed a backlog of market-ready pigs due to constrained processing capacity. This may also dampen the weaner market if space on fattening farms is limited," explained Bethan Wilkins, senior analyst at AHDB.
Prices had been picking up in Denmark in early September, but this small increase has since been lost and prices are now around €56/head, the lowest level since May 2019. Denmark supplies a significant number of weaners to Germany for finishing and demand for these pigs would be expected to fall now pork from Germany faces limited export prospects. "Weaner prices in Germany itself have fallen to just €31/head in the latest week, the lowest price since 2007," she added.
In countries such as Spain and Italy, weaner prices are more stable, with Spanish prices similar to late July while Italian prices have actually increased by €4 over the same period. "Strong trade with China is supporting the Spanish market, though the outlook for Italian prices, as a significant pig meat importer from Germany, looks more uncertain," believes Ms Wilkins.
    Industry 2020-10-09 09:02:47 2025-07-30 03:03:38 Details Edit Delete
4151 UK shopper confidence dips on new restrictions IGD's monthly survey shows that consumers are concerned about further drops in their income and a spike in food price.
A third (32%) of British shoppers expect to be worse off financially in the year ahead, up from 30% in August, reveals the latest IGD Shopper Confidence Index. Also, news of little progress in trade talks between the UK and EU have made 18% of shoppers to expect food prices to get much higher in the year ahead.
Confidence has declined the most among 18-24s and 35-44s. With announcements of redundancies, particularly impacting younger people, 38% of 18-24s expect to focus more on saving money on their food and groceries in the year ahead (vs 24% last month). This compares to 21% of all shoppers. Financial insecurity is doubled by local lockdowns, making confidence to decline significantly particularly in the West Midlands (-11 vs -6 Aug’20) and Wales (-11 vs -4). Both regions now have the lowest confidence.
“Shopper confidence is likely to remain fragile as the Job Retention Scheme comes to an end to be replaced by the Job Support Scheme, alongside shoppers contending with further uncertainties concerning COVID-19 and whether there is a deal or no-deal with the EU. This will no doubt lead to an increase in savvy shopping tactics over the coming months. With so much uncertainty at the moment, we anticipate shoppers’ confidence will respond to key announcements and media reports on COVID-19 and the EU.
Despite this ongoing period of low confidence, positivity towards the food and grocery industry remains high. The continued actions that have been taken by retailers and manufacturers across the country to support those in need have increased this trust. Indeed, trust in the food industry to ensure good availability has remained high (78%) despite recent increased levels of stockpiling,” commented Simon Wainwright, Director of Global Insight at IGD.
In September, overall confidence slipped to -8 on average for the whole month, down from -7 in August. While the month started at -6, confidence fell to -10 by the end of the month. Remaining at a relatively low level, confidence appears to have been suppressed by news of increased COVID-19 cases and further national restrictions being put in place – notably, the rule of six, working from home where possible and the 10 pm curfew for pubs and restaurants.
The score has been calculated using four key measures: Household finances; Food prices; Focus on quality vs. saving money; Trust in industry.
    Market 2020-10-09 09:17:37 2025-07-29 17:29:10 Details Edit Delete
4152 Danish livestock sector to receive an economic injection Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Mogens Jensen has decided to increase the slaughter premium scheme for calves, steers and heifers.
A new economic injection is going to help the Danish cattle sector to navigate through this uncertain market conditions brought by the COVID-19 crisis, announced the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. Farmers will receive an additional DKK 65 million (€8.73 million), which makes the total amount of subsidies poured in the sector to reach DKK 245 million (€32.91 million).
"It is a sector that has come under extra hard pressure under the corona. With DKK 65 million, we hold the hand during a business that is characterized by low prices. It is absolutely crucial that we continue to produce cattle in Denmark - the extra money for the slaughter premium scheme must help to ensure this", said Minister Mogens Jensen.
Over the last couple of years, there have been low prices for slaughter cattle and an increase in the export of calves. The price level is also affected by the Corona closures of the restaurant industry, because it has led to lower demand for the more expensive cuts, which usually go to, among others, restaurants at home and abroad.
Exports of infant calves increased by more than 25% in 2019, which is the largest export since 2013. "We must do what we can to prevent more cattle farmers from turning the key. Therefore, I already promised to work for an increase in the slaughter premium at the Cattle Congress earlier this year. Since then, the need for a helping hand has only increased due to the corona crisis. I am now fulfilling that promise by securing more money for the slaughter premium scheme already from 2020," added Minister Jensen.
The EU Commission has accepted the increase in the slaughter premium for 2020, which the Danish Agency for Agriculture will pay in the spring of 2021.
    Industry 2020-10-12 11:01:06 2025-07-29 03:10:37 Details Edit Delete
4153 ASF resurface in South Korea 1,500 pigs were culled last week in the Gangwon province to contain the virus.
South Korea reported last week its first case of African swine fever (ASF) in domestic pigs since October 2019. The virus was confirmed in the Gangwon province, where 3 pigs were found dead on a farm. According to the Korean news agency Yonhap, the country issued a special 48-hour travel ban to livestock-related facilities in the province. Subsequently, according to the ministry, the country has proceeded to slaughter about 1,500 pigs this Friday, within a radius of 10 km from the infected farm.
South Korean authorities expressed their concern earlier this year about new outbreaks in pig farms due to the fact that the disease was still present in wild boar population. Since the beginning of 2020, South Korea has reduced pork imports from major suppliers as the foodservice sector was impacted by the coronavirus crisis Also, the country was stockpiling frozen pork since 2019 and reserves were poured in the domestic market.
    Industry 2020-10-12 11:26:01 2025-07-30 06:02:02 Details Edit Delete
4154 Tonnies looks to strengthen its position in the British market
Due to increased demand for ham and sausages in the British market, Tonnies plans to invest a total of €25 million to add new production facilities for its UK subsidiary, CPC Meats. CPC Meats is already the market leader for bacon in the UK and produces for the British market at three locations in Suffolk, Coventry and Malton. The market for free-range meat is also a particular focus. Meat consumption levels in the UK are comparable with those existing in Germany but prices are at least 20% lower.
"The British market is a growth market for us. We want to serve the growing consumer demand there with our quality meat", said Tonnies’ managing director Frank Duffe. Two years ago, the German meat producer has acquired CPC Meats, showing a clear intention to preserve its influence in the British market. 4155 Brazil is set for record pork exports in 2020 Over the first nine months of the year, the South American producer exceeded the volumes shipped abroad in 2019.
Brazilian pork exports increased 33% in September compared to the same period last year, totalling 86,500 tonnes of fresh and processed products, according to the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA). As a result, shipments for the first nine months of 2020 have already exceeded the total accumulated in 2019 - 764.9 thousand tonnes against 750 thousand tonnes last year.
“We have good expectations for maintaining this pace over the next few months. The indications strengthen ABPA's forecasts of reaching a number close to 1 million tonnes exported in 2020," declared Ricardo Santin, President of ABPA. In revenue, exports generated $ 188.5 million in September, a figure 34% higher than the same month last year. In the accumulated result for the year, the partial results of 2020 also surpass those of the entire 2019 - $ 1.677 billion this year, against $ 1.577 billion in the previous year, according to Reuters.
Mainland China remains the main market for Brazilian pork, with 376,700 tonnes imported this year (+133%). 4156 ASF situation in Germany is getting worst A group of dead and sick wild boars, comprising at least 30 animals, was spotted on the island Kustrin-Kietz, at the Oder river.
Germany has counted 55 cases of ASF in wild boars, so far, but the figure could skyrocket in the following days as officials from the district Markisch Oderland confirmed for the local media that a herd of 30 animals, "half dead, half clearly ill" was spotted on the island Kustrin-Kietz at the Oder river, near the border with Poland after an intense search that took place at the end of the week.
The image of the herd halved by the disease was captured by a drone and the island is now red-flagged by the authorities. At the same time, an intervention of the hunters is inappropriate due to the risk of wild boars running and spreading the disease further. "Taking action would be too dangerous, as sick may run away and further spread the virus", confirmed Thomas Behrendt, spokesperson of the district Markisch Oderland, for public broadcaster RBB.
During the search, other carcasses were found and officials are expecting lab results before adding those numbers to the current figure of confirmed cases. The total risk area has increased to almost 2,200 square kilometres.
In Poland, authorities have confirmed since the beginning of the year 2,024 cases of AF in wild boar population and 99 outbreaks in farms.
    Industry 2020-10-13 08:52:14 2025-07-29 10:42:40 Details Edit Delete
4157 Expanded packing capacity required for US beef sector Adding packing capacity would result in both a larger US beef industry over the long run and more balanced profitability throughout the supply chain, says Rabobank analyst.
This year's disruptions in the US supply chain show an urgent need to expand packing capacity for US beef sector. According to the latest Rabobank analysis, Adding packing capacity would result in both a larger US beef industry over the long run and more balanced profitability throughout the supply chain. At the same time, this will make the US avoid major herd liquidation in the current cattle cycle, so the beef industry will be well-positioned to capitalize on growing global protein demand.
“If such expansion can be achieved through in-plant technology improvement and new, consumer demand-driven small and medium-sized plants, profitability will be more evenly distributed throughout the beef and cattle supply chain. More balanced profitability will prevent the US beef industry from shrinking and place it in a better position to capitalize on growing global protein demand,” according to Dustin Aherin, Analyst – Animal Protein, adding that improved profitability and industry stability allows for more outward, consumer-oriented focus and investment, which is critical for the US beef industry’s long-term success.
This year, economic uncertainty, as well as shifts in supply and demand, has caused great uncertainty in global protein markets. The situation has been further exacerbated by outbreaks of illness due to Covid-19 at the processing level that has created bottlenecks and backlogs. From March to May, weekly beef production has dropped by almost 40% but, despite the temptation of replacing beef with other alternatives, prices have responded immediately to increased demand."I think that was fantastic news for the beef industry. The hogs didn’t do this. Hogs didn’t get nearly that much pop in the cutout, especially after the U.S. government poured USD$2 trillion in stimulus out in the market. People will outbid each other far higher on price than we ever dreamed possible. So I think that’s indicative of a pretty solid underlying demand," commented Brian Stuart, President of Global Agri-Trends, invited as a headline speaker at the Canadian Beef Industry Conference. Looking to the future, Stuart believes meat processors will try to eliminate their dependence on human labour by investing in robotics.
So far, US beef industry hasn't recovered to 100% and reduced processing capacity due to plant shutdowns will likely continue. according to Stuart, the market leverage favours the packer when cattle supplies outnumber processing capability. "The leverage is heavily on the side of the packer and will be for months", he predicted.
    Market 2020-10-13 10:52:21 2025-07-29 02:46:26 Details Edit Delete

4161 USDA forecast decreased demand for meat from China Global meat imports are likely to slow down next year, argues the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).

China is to play an important role next year in the international meat trade. Volumes of pork imported by the giant Asian market is expected to drop as a recovery in the national pig inventory is underway, forecast USDA. While at this moment China is the world's largest importer of pork due to the ASF crisis, in 2021 volumes are expected to drop by 6%, according to the USDA report. Global pork prices are expected to be lower due to increased sales in price-sensitive markets.
Regarding beef, Chinese imports will increase by 4%, reaching 2.9 million tons in 2021, another all-time high. Changes in tastes and relatively modest production growth are believed to support future beef imports. However, the rebound in pork production will also slow down the growth of these imports to the slowest pace in the last 5 years. In the first 9 months of 2020, China's beef imports have reached 1.57 million tonnes, up 38.8% from the same period of 2019.
Regarding poultry meat, estimates show a decrease in Chinese imports of 6%, to 925,000 tonnes. Weaker demand stems from the expansion of domestic production and the limited willingness of consumers to offset the consumption of pork with that of poultry, particularly in light of an increased supply of pork.
    Market 2020-10-15 06:35:55 2025-07-28 16:38:43 Details Edit Delete

4166 MHP adds 250 meat stores in a new retail chain All will be placed in Kyiv but the company announced its intention to develop similar projects abroad.
Ukraine’s biggest poultry producer MHP plans to launch 250 meat stores of the new Myasomarket chain in Kyiv by 2025. The company is also involved in 1700 stores in the Nasha Ryaba retail chain. However, the Myasomarket chain is a brand new format for the Ukraine market. “We have analysed where modern retail is heading and what the consumer preferences are. What is comfortable for them, what attracts the consumer and what repels them. And as a result, we discovered an interesting thing – the convenience store format is something that has long been a reality in the developed world, but not in Ukraine,” said Sergey Ivanov, deputy head of the MHP board for commerce.
At the same time, MHP has started to test the consumer preferences with a fast-food chain by opening a store in Kyiv in July 2020. This investment reflects a new strategy for MHP, who is now more focused on the domestic market. In the second quarter, the effects of the Covid-19 pandemic and quarantine measures resulted in significant market disruption, with a sharp decrease in demand for breast fillet in EU and MENA markets, MHP said in a statement on September 4. Total export volume was down 9%, but MHP was able to offset part of this loss by increased demand for poultry in the Ukrainian domestic market. However, price levels in both domestic and export markets were down as well. The average chicken meat price decreased by 16% year-on-year to $ 1.27 per kg, the company estimated. According to Dmitry Morozov, director of the MHP’s franchise department, convenience stores will also be launched in the near future in international markets.
    Retail 2020-10-16 11:12:02 2025-07-30 08:03:59 Details Edit Delete
4167 AHDB sets target on ME markets Arab countries are seen as an important driver for red meat exports.
"There is room for us to take a larger share of the 90% import requirements for the region (the Middle East)," explained AHDB’s halal sector manager Dr Awal Fuseini during a webinar recently held by AHDB.
"We have seen there is an appetite for UK lamb in the Middle East and we must do more to maximise on the potential opportunities it presents. One of the biggest issues faced by our exporters presently is halal certification. Not all UK based certification bodies are recognised and accredited so it is therefore vitally important that you choose your certifier wisely as, without accreditation, your products will be rejected on arrival," he stressed.
UK shipments of lamb to the Middle East increased 319% between 2018 and 2019 but that is still a small share in a regional market that imports around 90% of all beef and lamb consumed locally. According to Adil Khan, from the Department for International Trade in Dubai, the Gulf Cooperation Council is the UK’s second-largest export market outside Europe – importing more UK products than China and three-times the volumes exported to India. Inside GCC, UAE is the most lucrative market for British red meat exporters (40%), with sheep meat being the most popular red meat, accounting for more than 60% of total red meat consumption. AHDB's plans to promote the UK’s red meat offering in the Middle East include attendance at the popular food and drink trade exhibition Gulfood in February next year.
    Market 2020-10-19 07:59:35 2025-07-30 01:01:13 Details Edit Delete
