7560 | JBS Foods Canada will invest $90 million in a new patty processing line | JBS Foods Canada has qualified for Alberta’s Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program by expanding its beef processing facility in Brooks. | <p><span lang="DE">Alberta beef is known around the world for its premium quality and great taste, produced with the highest standards of food safety, animal care, biosecurity and environmental stewardship. The province is home to farmers and ranchers who uphold this reputation in raising their cows, as well as world-class beef manufacturing facilities. In 2023, Alberta beef production totalled almost one million tonnes, with meat product sales totalling $12.2 billion.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">To attract even more large-scale investment in agri-food manufacturing, Alberta’s government introduced the Agri-Processing Investment Tax Credit program in spring 2023. The program provided incentive for JBS Foods Canada ULC (JBS Canada) to invest about $90 million in a new patty processing line and fulfillment centre at its Brooks plant. 7562 | JBS launches tool that expands socio-environmental monitoring in the livestock chain | Consultation via the WhatsApp application is another practical service channel for producers from all over Brazil who seek socio-environmental compliance from their suppliers. | <p>JBS now has the support of a new platform for free consultations on the socio-environmental situation of the livestock supply chain. Named 'Cowbot', the tool can be used by livestock farmers who supply or do not supply to JBS as a consultation prior to negotiation, contributing to the traceability of the third-party supply chain.</p> <p><span lang="DE">Through a <em>chat</em> that interacts with interested parties, the company offers the same information used to track its supply chain free of charge. To do so, the user simply needs to share with the <em>bot</em> the geolocation data or CAR number of the property they are negotiating with.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In just a few minutes, the tool can inform you whether or not a property complies with socio-environmental criteria, such as not being located in deforested areas, indigenous or quilombola lands, or environmental conservation units. The property also cannot have environmental embargoes. The tool can be used to check the compliance of any rural property, including purchases of grains and other agricultural commodities. To use the service, prior registration is required.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Since it began operating at the beginning of the year, Cowbot has received over 2,600 hits. Up until May, 533 requests for analysis were registered per month, an average of 124 per week and 21 per day. "The tool was developed so that our suppliers can quickly and easily perform a search. It is another action in our transparency strategy and an invitation for direct suppliers to monitor their own supply chain", explains Fábio Dias, Friboi’s Livestock Director and leader of Regenerative Agriculture at JBS Brazil. </span></p> <p><span lang="DE">The company's goal is to facilitate the traceability of the commodity chain throughout the country, in the same way as the Transparent Livestock platform. 7563 | Chefs serve British Lion eggs, but knowledge gaps around egg safety remain | A new survey from The Staff Canteen, the UK’s leading chef network, has found that while British Lion eggs are widely served and their food safety credentials are well understood, there is confusion around serving imported eggs to vulnerable groups. | <p><span lang="DE">While 83% of respondents said they use British Lion eggs, and awareness of the world-leading food safety standards of British Lion eggs is strong (90%), there are still significant gaps in knowledge around imported eggs. Shockingly, 37% of respondents were unaware that imported eggs are not approved by the Food Standards Agency (FSA) to be served runny to vulnerable groups.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Gary Ford, Chief Executive at the British Egg Industry Council, said: “British Lion eggs are FSA approved so operators can confidently serve them to customers however they like, including runny to vulnerable groups. 7564 | Communication and sustainability in the pig sector, present in the UCM summer courses | Communication and the triple economic, social and environmental sustainability of the white pig sector in Spain have been the focus of one of the summer courses of the Complutense University of Madrid (UCM), which have addressed the most effective strategies to convey to society with official data the true reality of this sector. | <p><span lang="DE">During the course, organised by INTERPORC, the different speakers demonstrated with figures and results "that there is a false account of the pork industry based on <em>fake news</em> and images from a past that no longer exists".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In contrast, scientific data show a sector that "is an international example in the implementation of clean technologies, biosecurity, animal welfare and food safety". The result "is a sector that is economically, socially and environmentally sustainable".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Economically, "its positive trade balance is 8.4 billion". Socially, "it generates 415,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs; with a large share of female employment and the constant creation of opportunities for young people; in addition to being fundamental for employment in small municipalities in Spain". And in environmental terms, its results speak for themselves. Between 1990 and 2022, it has reduced, per head of livestock, its GHG emissions by 43.6% and ammonia emissions by 49%. 7567 | UK: Concerning trend underlines prime lamb number fall | UK abattoir sheep throughput figures for June reveal a “concerning trend” with sheep numbers slaughtered substantially down in the first six months of this year compared to 2023. | <p><span lang="DE">Some 5.4 million prime lambs were processed in the first six months of the year, nine per cent down year-on-year and six per cent below 2022 levels.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">This new data is detailed in Hybu Cig Cymru-Meat Promotion Wales’ (HCC) July <em>Market Bulletin</em> and Editor Glesni Phillips said it represented a "concerning trend" of consecutive lower numbers. “This nine per cent fewer prime lambs equates to a weighty 564,400 head on 2023 numbers and is a knock-on effect of the information we saw in the 2023 June survey, which registered a ten per cent fall in sheep numbers.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"It depicts a concerning and successive year-on-year trend of a shrinking flock that could have sizeable repercussions for critical mass and lower production in Wales", she said.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">In total, there were 6.1 million sheep and lambs slaughtered at UK abattoirs up until June, representing a significant ten per cent (or 699,200 head) decline from the previous year.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"However, there may be a few chinks of light within these darker statistics, as they also include adult sheep numbers dropping as well- so it’s possible some could be kept back for further breeding", said Glesni, who is HCC’s Intelligence, Analysis & Business Insight Executive.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">She said throughput of adult sheep in the period was significantly below year-earlier levels, down 16 per cent to 688,600 head, which is the lowest level recorded since the first six months of 2020. 7569 | QMS: Prime cattle numbers show short-term resilience in Scotland | Despite a decrease in Scotland's overall beef herd over the past year, recent cattle population data from British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) indicates a significant increase in prime cattle numbers on Scottish farms compared to 2023. | <p><span lang="DE">According to the latest market commentary by Quality Meat Scotland (QMS), in April 2024, there was a marked 4.4% increase in the pool of males and beef-sired females aged 12 to 30 months compared to the previous year.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Iain Macdonald, Market Intelligence Manager at QMS commented:</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Despite the continuing decline in Scotland’s beef herd, the BCMS data shows that the small year-on-year increases in prime cattle on Scottish farms in the second half of 2023 have become more significant in 2024. This is likely to have been even stronger after accounting for age at death and is likely to have contributed to the downwards pressure on prime cattle prices observed in the spring.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"However, a seasonal dip in availability for slaughter has resulted in a slight price rebound since mid-June, with R4L steers reaching 489.8p/kg at Scottish abattoirs in the second week of July - 1.6% above the early-June low, yet still 3.9% below the year-to-date peak in February".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Driving the year-on-year increase in prime cattle supply on Scottish farms has been a decline in the outflow of store cattle to England and Wales from its peak, alongside the legacy of an increased spring calf crop in 2022. Iain commented: "It's worth noting that the elevated outflow of store cattle to England continues to squeeze the prime cattle kill at Scottish abattoirs. While slaughter numbers showed some increase from the lows of 2023 in the second quarter of this year, they still remained well below the five-year average".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">BCMS data from April suggests that prime cattle numbers are expected to remain higher than a year earlier on Scottish farms in the second half of 2024, although the rate of increase is likely to soften as the slaughter pool shifts towards younger age groups. Those aged 12-18 months in April were up by a smaller 2% on the year, while a reduction at 6-12 months in April may begin to impact availability in the final quarter of 2024, with peak effects expected by spring 2025 due to a typical age at death of around 21 months.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Iain noted: "South of the border, the picture is slightly different. There was a smaller year-on-year increase in slaughter availability in the first half compared to Scotland, and this trend is expected to continue into the third quarter before potentially tightening compared to 2023 in the run up to Christmas.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"This reflects earlier declines in calf registrations in England and Wales compared to Scotland during the 2022 herd contraction. Unlike Scotland, there was a small decline in the 12-18-month age group in April compared to a year earlier, while the rise at 18-24 months was approximately one-third of the 6% increase seen in Scotland".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Similarly steep reductions of over 4% in the 6-12-month age group on both sides of the border point to a very tight supply of shorter keep store cattle at autumn sales. This is likely to result in strong competition for Scottish-born stores from finishers across Great Britain. For longer keep stores, supply will also remain tight, with year-on-year reductions at under six months in April closer to 2%.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Iain commented: "Concerningly, BCMS population data signals a renewed acceleration in the year-on-year decline of the beef breeding herd, with beef-sired females aged over 30 months on Scottish farms down 2.4% from April 2023. Meanwhile, the decline in England and Wales continued to outpace Scotland, showing a year-on-year reduction of 3.2%, indicating ongoing competition for Scotland’s suckler-bred store cattle.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Looking back over the past six years, the decline in beef-sired females in England and Wales has been significantly steeper than in Scotland, at 14.2% compared to 10.4% for those aged over 30 months. Consequently, it's crucial to support Scottish finishers to enhance competitiveness and maximise the number of Scotch-eligible cattle remaining in Scotland".</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">A further decline in Scotland’s beef herd this year means that a reduced 2024 calf crop follows a 2.7% fall in calf registrations in 2023, pointing to further tightening of store cattle availability in 2025 and continued pressure on prime cattle availability in 2026.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">Iain concluded: "In addition to reduced economic activity from farming and processing, a declining beef herd will impact the output, GVA, and jobs generated by their supply sectors, potentially leading to wider social impacts.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"To counteract these trends, modelling indicates that taking action in Scotland to stabilise the beef herd, boost productivity, and reduce the outflow of store cattle could shift the economic narrative from contraction to growth by 2030.</span></p> <p><span lang="DE">"Meanwhile, given similar downward trends in beef production south of the border, there is potential for significant impact on UK food security.
