4237 Avian flu arrives in Germany Several cases of H5N8 were confirmed in different countries in Europe, such as Great Britain and the Netherlands.
Germany has confirmed the second case of avian flu H5N8 on a small farm in the northern side of the country. The case was detected at a small farm in the Kreis Segeberg area in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, Segeberg's local government said in a statement. 36 birds were culled and other farms in the area have received the interdiction to raise birds in open spaces.
Several outbreaks of bird flu have been reported in Europe in recent weeks. Wild animals are believed to be spreading the disease. The H5N8 bird flu had already been detected in another farm in Schleswig-Holstein on 5 November. The Netherlands, one of the largest poultry producer in the EU had to cull more than 200,000 birds after bird flu has been reported on several farms since the end of October. Also, 13,000 birds were culled on a farm in northwest England after the virus was confirmed there.
    Industry 2020-11-11 06:26:32 2025-08-06 05:03:41 Details Edit Delete

3204 China is raising tariffs on US pork and beef A 10% increase in duties was announced by the Chinese officials at the end of last week.
Duties for US pork and beef imports will increase with 10%, according to official sources from Beijing who announced this as the latest retaliation move in the US-China trade war. It also comes in a moment when China is increasing constantly pork and beef imports as the ASF situation in the country is depleting the domestic supply of pork.
The new Chinese tariffs will take effect from September 1 and are going to be added at those existing already such as the 62% tariff on US pork. "Any escalation in the trade dispute with China is a major concern to US pork producers. China, the largest pork-consuming nation in the world, is seeking reliable sources of pork as it deals with African swine fever. There is no more reliable source than the United States. US pork producers are eager to compete on a level playing field in China and to more fully participate in this unprecedented opportunity. Unfortunately, the current trade dispute prevents us from doing so," commented Jim Monroe, assistant vice president of the National Pork Producers Council (NPPC).
On the other hand, Washington announced that a trade deal with Japan is underway and, once implemented, will place the US meat industry back on a level playing field with international competitors in one of its most important export markets. Dr. Dermot Hayes, an economist at Iowa State University, estimates exports to Japan will grow from $1.6 billion in 2018 to more than $2.2 billion over the next 15 years as a result of the United States pork industry getting market access in Japan as favorable as its competitors. At this time, Japan accounts for 25% of US pork exports.
    Market 2019-08-26 11:44:50 2025-08-06 05:03:46 Details Edit Delete
6314 Vall Companys SAU promotes research to improve the health of piglets The company leads a project based on the development of new non-invasive fecal biomarkers to alleviate and prevent digestive problems in piglets.
Vall Companys SAU, a company dedicated to animal breeding and livestock integration belonging to the Vall Companys Group, is committed to promoting research to improve the health of piglets. In this line, the company is part of a project to develop methods to identify new non-invasive fecal biomarkers of intestinal inflammation in piglets that allow anticipating the development of diseases.

To achieve this objective, a consortium has been formed made up of Vall Companys, as the main Spanish pig producer, MEVET (veterinary laboratory) and the research groups SNiBA and SBCV of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, who have extensive research experience in the field of animal nutrition and veterinary biochemistry.

It should be noted that weaning is a very stressful time for the piglet, which can lead to health problems that trigger post-weaning diarrhea. For more than 20 years, zinc oxide (ZnO) has been widely used at therapeutic levels in the swine industry as an effective way to prevent these types of ailments.

However, from June 2022, the use of medicinal doses of ZnO will not be authorized in the European Union, so the development of new strategies, both preventive and therapeutic, is urgently required to control this problem, since there are currently no clear alternative that can replace this compound.

Experts indicate that the solution may not depend solely on feed formulation, but should be given a multifactorial approach considering biosecurity, management, facilities and equipment. Likewise, having rapid diagnostic techniques using non-invasive biomarkers, as is the objective of this project, could represent a great advance in veterinary diagnosis in early stages, since they would allow rapid action on the farm in a palliative-preventive way against piglet digestive problems.

In addition, the use of feces as a sampling point has a very important advantage over other types of samples, such as blood, due to the ease of obtaining it and the fact that it does not imply stress for the animal.

This project has been financed within the framework of the call for projects in public-private collaboration 2021 of the State Research Agency of the Ministry of Science and Innovation, within the framework of the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan and financed with European funds NextGenerationEU.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-04-06 00:10:32 2025-08-06 05:03:53 Details Edit Delete
7411 USDA announces $824 million in new funding to protect livestock health The U.S. Department of Agriculture announced it is taking several additional actions to ensure the health and viability of the nation’s livestock and poultry. In the two months since the initial detection of H5N1 in dairy cattle, USDA has worked quickly and in concert with its federal and state partners to better understand the virus and contain the disease and remains committed to seeking additional ways to collect the data needed to better understand and mitigate the risk created by this outbreak.
USDA is adding an additional $824 million in emergency funding from the Commodity Credit Corporation (CCC) to bolster these efforts and is launching a new Voluntary H5N1 Dairy Herd Status Pilot Program to give dairy producers more options to monitor the health of their herds and move cows more quickly while providing on-going testing and expanding USDA’s understanding of the disease.

Emergency Funding to Build on Response Efforts

To help ensure the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) can continue to provide critical rapid response activities, Secretary Vilsack approved the transfer of $824 million from the CCC to APHIS to directly support the response efforts. This funding allows APHIS to continue its critical work with state and local partners to quickly identify and address cases of HPAI/H5N1 in poultry and livestock. The funding will support anticipated diagnostics, field response activities, pre-movement testing requirements, other necessary surveillance and control activities, surveillance in wildlife for APHIS, the Agricultural Research Service’s (ARS) work in developing vaccines for HPAI in cattle, turkeys, pigs, and goats, and ARS and the Food Safety and Inspection Service’s food safety studies.

The Secretary is authorized to transfer funding from available resources including the CCC to address emergency outbreaks of animal and plant pests and diseases. USDA previously approved the use of $1.3 billion in emergency funding to address nationwide HPAI detections in wild birds and commercial poultry operations. These additional funds will ensure our continued robust and rapid response to this outbreak.

Voluntary Dairy Herd Status Pilot Program

Continuing to build on the efforts to contain H5N1, APHIS is standing up a Voluntary H5N1 Dairy Herd Status Pilot Program, which provides alternative testing and movement options to the Federal Order to increase USDA's monitoring capabilities to mitigate the spread of H5N1. The Voluntary H5N1 Dairy Herd Status Pilot Program aims to create additional testing options for producers with herds that have tested negative for three weeks in a row, further reduce H5N1 virus dissemination, provide for further opportunities to test herds that are not known to be affected with H5N1, increase surveillance and expand our knowledge of the disease, and support an overall national program to reduce the risk of H5N1 in dairy herds.

The main benefit for farmers who choose to enroll in the Voluntary H5N1 Dairy Herd Status Pilot Program is that once they can demonstrate their herds are free of H5N1 with results from a National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) facility, they will then need to conduct weekly tests on bulk milk from that herd to confirm that status and will be able to ship their cows at the time they prefer and without testing individual animals.

Dairy producers from States enrolled in the first phase of this program who choose to enroll their herds and who test negative for H5N1 for three consecutive weeks using on-farm bulk tank milk samples or similar representative milk samples tested at a NAHLN laboratory will be able to move animals without additional pre-movement testing currently required under the Federal Order. Producers must also comply with continued regular weekly monitoring and testing of the herd for H5N1.

APHIS is currently working with state animal health officials to identify states to participate in a pilot phase of the program. Producers from states participating in this pilot can start enrolling in the Voluntary H5N1 Dairy Herd Status Pilot Program on the week of June 3, 2024, by contacting their APHIS Area Veterinarian in Charge or State Veterinarian and signing a Herd Monitoring Plan agreement. USDA strongly encourages dairy producers to enroll in this new program. Beyond the benefits for their own operations, increased producer participation may help USDA to establish state and/or regional disease-free statuses that could further ease compliance with the current Federal Order. Those herds not enrolled in the pilot program will continue to follow the interstate testing and movement requirements published in the Federal Order. More specific guidance on the new program, including how to enroll and how to obtain and maintain a herd status, will be made available on the APHIS website in the coming days.

As additional testing measures take place, USDA anticipates that it will see an increase in testing and positive test results, which will add to our knowledge of the disease and how it may spread between herds. At the same time, this pilot program will help to gather additional information on how producers with affected herds can document elimination of the virus on their operations and steps they can take to maintain an H5N1 virus-free herd.

As USDA continues to take steps to protect the health of livestock, the Department continues to work closely with federal partners at the CDC on protecting the health of people and FDA on protecting the safety of the food supply. The U.S. government remains committed to addressing this situation with urgency.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-06-04 00:05:18 2025-08-06 05:03:53 Details Edit Delete

7667 Make it Scotch research shows Brits‘ devotion to BBQ Make it Scotch, the consumer-focused arm of Quality Meat Scotland that champions the Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb, and Specially Selected Pork brands, has just released new research revealing Brits' grilling habits for 2024.
According to the Met Office, this summer is on track to be the wettest summer in a century. However, this hasn’t dampened the spirits of the nation, who remain steadfast grill enthusiasts, with 26% continuing to BBQ outdoors despite the weather and 40% quickly pivoting to using their oven to grill indoors. This resilience highlights the nation's dedication to their beloved summer culinary tradition, proving that not even record-breaking rainfall can wash away their passion for grilling.

When it comes to what people are putting on summer barbecues, meat was the clear favourite. The findings reveal that the humble sausage is the must-have BBQ dish this year, with a whopping two-thirds (67%) of respondents choosing it. Closely following, the classic burger garners 65% of the votes and 40% of those surveyed plumping for steaks, marinated steaks and chops, demonstrating that BBQ enthusiasts continue to enjoy simple staples.

To help amateur grill masters up their game even further, Make it Scotch has partnered with Scotch Butchers Club member, John Davidson of John Davidsons Butchers, Inverurie who proudly barbecues most nights of the week. Here, John shares his top tips for a memorable and mouth-watering barbecue for what’s left of the summer!

John Davidson said: "When cooking at home, there are countless ways to enjoy barbecuing, whether you're grilling a variety of meats or adding a selection of vegetables for a balanced, flavourful meal".

"Both as a butcher and someone who barbeques most days, when it comes to choosing the perfect meats, I always direct people to top-quality options like Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb, and Specially Selected Pork. These meats are not just my go-to choices for their exceptional taste and tenderness, but also for the peace of mind that comes with knowing I’m serving food produced to the highest standards of quality and welfare.

"Heading to your local butcher means you can have a chat about what you need and maybe come away with some new cuts you’ve not tried before, confident that you’re bringing home meat that’s been freshly prepared and is ready to cook. It's a simple choice that makes a big difference, ensuring that every barbecue at home is a delicious, wholesome experience to enjoy with family or friends".

John's Barbecue Top Tips:

When planning your barbecue, the choice of meat can make all the difference. If you're short on time but want maximum flavour, try grilling some lesser-known Scotch Beef cuts like Hanger (Onglet) Steak, Bavette, or Flank Steak. These cuts are reasonably priced, full flavoured steaks with character. For a more classic option, you can’t go wrong with Sirloin, Ribeye or Rump steaks, which offer simplicity and satisfaction every time.

Specially Selected Pork Chops are a favourite of mine—just be sure not to overcook them. And if you're looking for something truly special, a thick-cut Scotch Lamb Chop is hard to beat, especially at this time of year as we head towards the peak Lamb season.

If you’re in the mood for something that requires a bit more patience, consider going low and slow. A Specially Selected Pork Shoulder is perfect for homemade pulled pork, which is an experience in itself. Similarly, a Scotch Lamb Shoulder, cooked until it's tender and falling off the bone, is exquisite.

Scotch Beef Chuck Roast is another fantastic and easy option, but the real secret to success is talking to your local butcher. They can offer invaluable advice on availability and the best cuts for your barbecue.

And remember when selecting red meat, always look out for the Scotch Beef, Scotch Lamb or Specially Selected Pork logos. These blue logos on pack or in your local butcher guarantee that the livestock has spent its whole life on Scottish farms known for their high standards of animal welfare and sustainable farming practices. They are your assurance for the best quality and flavour.

By following these tips, you can elevate your BBQ game and delight your guests with delicious, expertly cooked meat this summer.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-08-20 00:05:59 2025-08-06 05:03:57 Details Edit Delete
8460 A couple more cows per herd each year would realise Scotland’s economic potential by 2030 Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) continues to highlight the great potential of Scotland’s beef sector in its latest economic modelling on anticipated future domestic demand. Under the most realistic consumption scenario, the data estimates that by 2030 the UK would collectively need to produce 278,000 tonnes of beef on top of what it is currently projected to produce to achieve full self-sufficiency. This is a significant challenge given that domestic production is projected to decline by 8% from 2023 levels, while the UK population is set to grow by nearly 5% over the same period.
For Scotland to bridge this gap, this equates to around an additional 22,000 tonnes of beef, requiring approximately 79,000 additional cows at the current national average reproduction rate. This economic opportunity in Scotland is around six to eight more cows per herd or two cows a year per herd over the next three to four years, so that calves reaching the market in 2030 will be born in 2028 and 2029. The modelling suggests that achieving this would generate an additional £281 million in output and contribute £76 million in Gross Value Added (GVA) to the Scottish economy.

This widening gap between UK supply and demand will lead to significant increases in net imports from elsewhere, projected to be 124,000 tonnes higher in 2030 compared to 2023.

Kate Rowell, Chair of QMS, said: “Our evidence centre points to a clear growth opportunity by servicing domestic demand which, if we don’t seize, others certainly will through imports.

"We want the Scottish herd to grow by close to 80,000 cattle when compared to our projections which, when viewed at an individual farm level, translates to an attainable 'couple more cows per herd each year'. Nationally, this goal would see the herd return to the levels seen in the mid-2010s. With the strength in our beef prices at the moment, now is the ideal time to invest in this small growth.

"Self-servicing is best for our society, economy, environment and Scotland has the infrastructure to support this growth, with the processing sector currently operating at only 69-73% capacity. If our production continues to decline, it will intensify adverse knock-on effects across the supply chain from feed, haulage and auctioneers to processors, butchers and retailers, and finally consumers".

Compounding this challenge is global market volatility. As climate change affects major beef-producing nations, the UK faces increasing risks to food security. A rise in global demand for UK beef could further exacerbate supply issues domestically, requiring even greater import volumes to balance the market.

With the UK already a net importer of beef, requiring 154,000 tonnes in 2023 and an estimated 164,000 tonnes in 2024, the projected 278,000-tonne shortfall by 2030 is a considerable increase on 2023 levels. Compared to 2023, it would be 81% higher, while it would be up by 69% on 2024.

Given that UK beef production is typically more efficient and lower in emissions than international alternatives, increasing imports contradicts global sustainability goals, including commitments under the Paris Agreement.

Kate continued: “Our sector provides multiple public goods, supporting our soils and biodiversity, financially sustaining our most remote and rural communities and nourishing our nation with our world-renown quality protein. It would be utterly perverse from a security, quality and environmental perspective to risk losing a critical part of our national food system and accept an increase in overseas red meat imports.

"There is no one silver bullet solution to reversing the decline in the national beef herd and increasing our productivity and no one group that is responsible for making it happen. It will take everyone – industry, government and people in Scotland – to slow down the production decline and meet out potential".

Throughout May and over the summer months, QMS will be working with partners to raise awareness, engage with and support producers and traders, politicians and decision makers, and consumers to boost confidence in our at-home market opportunity and encourage action.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-05-09 00:15:48 2025-08-06 05:03:57 Details Edit Delete
5457 Smart-farming systems implemented by CP Foods to increase animal welfare The "Smart Farm" system has been integrated with the company's farming business during the last few months..
Thai Charoen Pokphand Foods (CP Foods) has applied cutting-edge technologies and environmentally-friendly innovations, integrating smart farm systems and blockchain technology into animal husbandry to leverage “BASIC HEALTHY OF ANIMALS” in conjunction with animal welfare standards. The effort helps CP Foods significantly reduce dependence on antibiotics and increase consumer confidence in food safety standards.
Dr. Payungsak Somyanontanagul, D.V.M, Vice President Farm Standard and Regulatory as Head of Ambition – Animal Welfare at CP Foods, said the company recognizes that Animal Welfare is directly related to food quality and safety. Thus, the company has established a policy on animal welfare and prudent use of antimicrobials to raised animals ethically, ensuring the well-being of animals in line with international regulations and laws. To put policies into practice, multiple digital solutions and technologies have been adopted to support the live of animals at farms.

The "Smart Farm" system has therefore been integrated with the company's farming business. A vast amount of online information being collected by the company has resulted in big data to be used for analysis and optimize efficiency. CP Foods has also adopted blockchain technology to build and raise the level of confidence in a wide range of information and, ultimately, create transparent traceability.
The data analysis enables CP Foods to come up with precision feed formulation, and a living environment that is comfortable for animals in each age range. This will enhance the natural animal's growth more effectively.
In addition to in-depth data analysis, CP Foods has implemented multiple hi-tech innovations at its smart farms to keep animals in healthy condition and minimize the contact between human and animal, such as the use of surveillance cameras and IoT technology to help remotely control animal health monitoring and displays real-time results and data analysis. Also, the Smart Farm system provides timely warning of abnormal status within the farms. For example, the company has applied a sound talk system to detect the coughing sound of pigs to monitor and analyze their health conditions.
These innovations are not only helping animals to live comfortably but also enabling farms operators to take care of the animals and manage work via mobile anywhere, anytime.

"Smart Farm can reduce feed wastage and significantly efficient production cost. Most importantly, it also increases biosecurity and keep farms safe from disease outbreak. If minimize risk of disease and enhance good animal well-being, this leads to a reduction in the use of antibiotics,” Dr. Payungsak Somyanontanagul summarized.

Aside from its own business, the company introduces solutions, such as automatic feeding and watering systems, remote observation system, etc., to its contract farmers. This is to make sure that consumers around the world have received high-quality, hygienic, and safe meats from internationally recognized animal welfare practices.

    Industry 2022-05-04 07:46:54 2025-08-06 05:03:58 Details Edit Delete
6711 The popular VW currywurst is back again! After VW banned meat from the range of its main canteen in Wolfsburg two years ago, meat-based dishes are now returning to the menu.
It was an excitement that went through the media exactly two years ago in August 2021: VW is removing the currywurst from its own canteen offer. The VW company restaurant in the brand high-rise in Wolfsburg was to be completely converted to vegetarian and vegan products, and the well-known VW currywurst was to be removed from the range there. The company justified this step by saying that the employees would have liked more meat-free and purely plant-based meals.

Two years later, the currywurst is celebrating its comeback! In the past few days, the front pages have often featured the headline that currywurst is returning to the VW canteen. A VW spokeswoman confirmed that meat and fish will again be offered in the canteen in the brand high-rise - at the request of the employees. The popular VW currywurst should also be back on the menu. According to several media reports, the currywurst, which was offered without interruption in other company canteens, has even increased its sales in the past two years.

Since 1950, the VW butchery has initially only supplied the workers with sausages, including Krakauer, Fleischkäse or meat sausage. The company even had its own farm at one time - the farm was closed at some point, but the butcher shop remained. Now the pork comes from the region and is produced without phosphates, milk protein and glutamate and with comparatively little fat. In 1973, the VW currywurst was served for the first time, based on a top-secret seasoning mixture from the company Raps in Kulmbach.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-09-01 00:15:43 2025-08-06 05:04:05 Details Edit Delete
6324 Increasing global demand brings cheer to beef sector A new analysis of the outlook for the beef sector in Wales and the rest of the UK, compiled by levy board Hybu Cig Cymru-Meat Promotion Wales (HCC), has pointed to crucial global factors which will give farmers cause for optimism, despite uncertainties at home.
Over the past 12 months, farmgate prices for beef cattle have hit record levels. In the early months of 2023, steers consistently fetched close to the £5 per kilo mark in the deadweight market. The average price in England and Wales sat at £4.85 per kilo at the end of March - 17% higher than the levels seen in 2022, and 33% higher than the 5-year average for the time of year.

The report, part of HCC’s 'Between the Lines' market insight series, points to significant challenges for both farmers and consumers at home. GB retail figures suggest that domestic consumers are feeling the cost of living pinch, with the proportion of beef sold as cheaper mince products increasing to 54%, which has an impact on the profitability of the supply chain.

Also, farm input costs, although lower than they were in the immediate aftermath of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last year, are still historically high, putting pressure on farm business margins.

However, an analysis of global data suggests that worldwide demand, which has helped to underpin farmgate prices, will continue to be buoyant. In 2022, the volume of beef exports from Wales jumped by 20% on the previous year, with the trade worth around £75m to Welsh farmers and processors.

HCC's Intelligence, Analysis and Business Insight Executive Glesni Phillips, said, "By looking at cattle population data, we can see that beef production in GB as a whole is set to increase slightly in the short term. Given the challenges we face in terms of the impact of the cost of living crisis on British consumers, this could have led to a shift in the balance of supply and demand and a fall in farmgate prices".

"However, a tight global supply of beef is likely to continue to have a significant impact", she said. 7521 Vall Companys Group and Kimitec promote the circular economy of by-products The Vall Companys agri-food group and the biotechnology company Kimitec have joined forces to create MVC Ingredients, a joint business project that will allow certain Group by-products to be converted into valued co-products that serve as raw material for other industries in the market.
This joint venture has been created jointly by the Vall Companys Group and Kimitec Biogroup, through its research and development centre, MAAVi Innovation Center. The project dedicated to research, development and innovation (R&D&I) has an initial joint investment of two million euros.

MVC Ingredients is made up of a team of five researchers dedicated to the valorisation of by-products, with a first line of work on pig hair, which will be followed by other projects that are currently in the initial stages of study and evaluation. The scope of all these projects ranges from the research and development part to the industrial scaling up and placing on the market of the by-products that are generated.

The work will be carried out at Kimitec's headquarters in Vícar, Almería. These facilities have a laboratory dedicated to R&D&I projects and an industrial plant where innovation trials can be scaled up; all with a total of 50,000 m2.

MVC Ingredients is the reflection of an alliance between industry leaders. Grupo Vall Companys is the leading producer of pork and poultry in Spain and Kimitec is the founding company of MAAVi Innovation Center, the largest biotechnology innovation hub dedicated to natural products in Europe.

The project between the two companies is focused on promoting a sustainable and highly innovative circular economy system by valorising animal by-products into value-added co-products for the market, improving both ESG objectives and the bottom line.

Grupo Vall Companys has recently started circularity projects with other sector leaders. For example, the Veos Ibérica project in Monzón; a joint venture with the Belgian Veos Group dedicated to the reuse of porcine blood to produce blood plasma. Or, the joint project with Bioibérica - the leading pharmaceutical company in Spain - to obtain heparin through porcine intestinal mucosa, creating the BioVall joint venture.

The general manager of the pig division of the Vall Companys Group, Albert Morera , has highlighted that "the pig sector has always been characterised by a very high level of circular economy and at the Vall Companys Group we already have several parallel projects to revalue our waste".

For its part, Kimitec's MAAVi Innovation Center has the mission of developing R&D&I solutions for a future without waste or chemical residues in food, promoting a food system free of chemical synthesis products and completely circular. With more than 12 years of experience and more than 14 million euros of investment, it has developed projects to revalue by-products from leading companies in the agri-food sector both nationally and internationally.

In the words of Felix Garcia , CEO of Kimitec, "this joint venture represents an important milestone in our vision of a more sustainable future. By changing the paradigm from waste to by-products, MVC Ingredients will contribute to using resources more efficiently and sustainably, thus promoting our mission of managing waste as a source of wealth in our business models".
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-07-07 00:34:45 2025-08-06 05:04:12 Details Edit Delete
2172 Scottish beef prices to rebound this time of year A Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) analysis shows that the recent decrease in prices is going to be followed by a rise due to the higher demand expected before Christmas.
Stuart Ashworth, QMS Director of Economic Services believes that, despite recent falls in cattle and beef prices in Scotland, current prices will "once again moved ahead of year-earlier levels to start November 2p/kg dwt higher than last year".
Prices are expected to rise as demand for beef increases in the run-up to winter holidays as Christmas buying will be underway shortly and premium beef, often with a 21 or 28-day maturation period, will need to be purchased over the next couple of weeks to meet consumer demand. "The availability of prime stock in the run-up to Christmas may prove to be better than last year as some of these slower finishing cattle come onto the market. Demand for beef will be expected to grow in the run-up to Christmas, particularly for the more expensive roasting joints.

Data on retail sales from Kantar Worldpanel typically show that beef sales over the Christmas and new year period can be 2-3% higher than in the month previous while demand for roasting joints can double".
As a consequence, it is not unusual to see prime cattle prices begin to firm in mid-November before dipping away again from mid-December. A typical rise over this period during the past five years is around 2-3p/kg dwt. Last year the price climb was striking, lifting 7p/kg dwt over November as cattle numbers tightened.

In contrast to prime cattle, the weekly slaughterings of cull cows over July, August and September have been running higher than year-earlier levels said Mr Ashworth, although they have been producing lighter weight carcases possibly of poorer conformation.

"Price-reporting abattoirs indicate that the weekly kill of cull cows has continued to run ahead of year-earlier levels through October.

As numbers of cull cows increased, prices started to slide particularly through July and August. This has led to a sharp decrease in prices with the current price being around 18 p/kg dwt below last year", added Mr Ashworth.

Imports of frozen beef, more likely to be competing with cow beef for manufacturers interests have also been running higher than last year through the autumn, according to QMS Director of Economic Services. In contrast imports of fresh and chilled beef have been very similar to last year’s levels.
    Industry 2018-11-10 12:07:04 2025-08-06 05:04:19 Details Edit Delete
3793 Pakistani poultry industry looks to gain access in the Afghan market Pakistan Poultry Association has requested the federal government to include chicken meat and eggs in the list of export items to Afghanistan.
Pakistani poultry breeders are looking to increase their market share in the Afghan market as the COVID-19 outbreak in Iran has hindered the chicken meat and eggs exports to Afghanistan. Pakistan Poultry Association has requested the federal government to include Chicken meat and eggs in the list of export items to Afghanistan,” Chaudhary Muhammad Fargham, vice chairman PPA, said in a statement.
Currently, Afghanistan is importing 30% of the chicken meat and eggs to meet domestic consumption. Pakistani poultry industry has an annual turnover of PKR 800 billion ($4.8 billion), while the investment stands at PKR 700 billion ($4.2 billion). The rate growth for the Pakistani poultry industry has been between 8% to 10% in the last 5 years and the country ranks as the world's 11th largest poultry production, with an annual output of 1,1 billion broilers. 7365 Marel: Chicken breast meat and its versatility With the exception of markets in Southeast Asia where chicken leg meat is preferred, breast meat reigns supreme. Breast meat is healthy, quick and easy to prepare and can be served in countless ways. It is infinitely flexible. Breast meat is particularly popular in North America, Europe and Oceania. It is wise to approach your breast meat production line with careful consideration, given its significant profitability within your process.
Breast meat reaches the consumer in many forms. These include a generous selection of fillet products to be cooked at home such as whole fillets, half fillets, tenderloins and diced breast meat for stir-fried oriental dishes. They also include reformed or muscle breast meat portions of identical shape and weight for the catering sector as well as cubes and strips to be processed industrially into a wide variety of tasty further processed products. Breast meat is also a key ingredient in the ever-popular chicken burger or chicken sandwich.

Standard or organic

Breast meat is eaten in the home, in quick service outlets and as the centerpiece of an elaborate dish in fine-dining restaurants. In the latter instance, breast fillet will probably have come from a label rouge bird or similar organically grown, more ‘exclusive’ chicken, moving away from the standard broiler. Many markets are seeing demand for such birds, known under various different market-specific names and labels, increase. In some markets, as for example, in the Netherlands, standard broilers are no longer sold in supermarkets.

Increasing weights

Broiler weights are increasing all the time, meaning that the fillets coming from them are often too big to fit onto a retail tray and have to be cut. Cutting has to be done in such a way that the fillet still looks “natural”, as consumers will not want to buy fresh product that has obviously been tampered with.

For a number of reasons, breast meat is often sold on retail trays of a specific price and weight. Fixed-weight/fixed-price packs are convenient both for the retailer and the consumer. Retailers order a fixed number of packs of the same weight and price; consumers know exactly how much they want to spend on their meal. The ‘problem’ passes to the processor, who will want to ensure that any giveaway, particularly of high-value breast fillet, is minimal, as underweight packs are strictly not allowed. Fortunately, Marel technology is now available to help ensure this. With the help of I-Cut122 TrimSort and RoboBatcher Flex, maximum utilization of the valuable deboned poultry breast meat is guaranteed.

Boost your margins

The retail sector still produces catch-weight packs, where a given number of breast fillets are packed onto a tray and where the weight of each fillet and therefore the total pack weight can vary. Product destined for the catering/quick service restaurant sector is packed bulk. As people in those markets where breast fillet is popular become richer, demand for the product itself and items made from it is sure to grow further. Investing in a Marel breast meat production line tailored to your market's needs is always a perfect fit and ensures a long-term profitability, boosting your margins.

A holistic approach

At Marel, we view the entire breast meat product flow, from deboning to packing, as an interconnected and integrated process. Every component in the processing line is part of a unified whole and works in harmony to achieve a common goal. In our case, that goal is achieving overall excellence in breast meat processing.
Key components in this holistic approach to breast meat processing starts with an AMF-i or an FHF FlexControl deboning system. Further down the line, other innovations and proven solutions, including Innova ProFlow Breast Meat software, SensorX, IRIS FI, I-Cut 122 TrimSort and RoboBatcher Flex, complete the breast meat process.

All this is more than just deboning chicken breast; we are connecting every aspect of the process to achieve the absolute maximum in quality, productivity and yield. Such a holistic approach succeeds in making innovative solutions all work together to elevate your performance.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-05-22 00:05:21 2025-08-06 05:04:51 Details Edit Delete
7987 Spanish Serrano ham continues to grow in the German market Spanish Serrano ham is an iconic product that has crossed borders, earning a prominent place in international gastronomy. In the German market, this product has established itself as one of the most valued, demonstrating an increasing relevance at a cultural, social and economic level.
During the first half of 2024, German consumers' preference for the quality of Spanish Serrano ham has maintained a solid demand, strengthening its position in the country's food supply and consolidating itself as a highly appreciated product with a representative flavour of Spanish cuisine.

In 2024, the German market established itself as the second largest export destination for Spanish cured ham, representing 19.15% in volume and 17.46% in value. This highlights Germany as a country where the culture of Serrano ham has taken hold, being one of the favourites of local consumers.

Over the years, the German consumer has come to appreciate the unique tradition and flavour of Serrano ham, which has led Spanish export companies to fine-tune their offering to meet the German market's expectations of quality and authenticity.

As Álvaro Díaz de Liaño, Marketing and Promotion Director of the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE), points out , "the German consumer's confidence in Serrano ham is a reflection of our commitment to quality and tradition, which motivates us to continue offering the best of our cuisine in a highly demanding market".

Although the German market has remained strong in terms of value, 2024 has been a year of adjustments in terms of volume. Exports to Germany recorded a 7.52% drop in the volume of Serrano ham sold, a decrease that contrasts with an increase in the average price of the product of 18.36%.

This means that, even though fewer tons of Serrano ham were exported, German consumers were willing to pay a higher price, resulting in an increase in the total export value of 9.46%. In fact, the CJSE has joined forces with Spanischer Schinken to collaborate in the promotion of Spanish Serrano ham in Germany, with a website where you can buy Spanish Serrano ham, lomo, chorizo, salchichón, tapas, cheeses, etc.

Within the German market, the bone-in ham format suffered a notable decrease in volume, falling by 38.94% compared to the same period last year. However, this trend was partly offset by a 33.98% increase in bone-in shoulder exports, which shows that the market is still looking for variety and adaptability in Serrano ham products.

The boneless format, on the other hand, remains the preferred format, both in Germany and in other markets. Although it registered a slight fall of 4.93% in volume, the increase of 12.8% in value reflects that German consumers are willing to invest in products that combine convenience and quality. This format, being easier to handle and consume, represents an ideal option for the modern lifestyle, where convenience and authenticity are key factors in the purchasing decision.

As the German market continues to value quality products, Spanish Serrano ham has a promising future in Germany. The evolution in format preferences and the increase in the value of exports demonstrate that consumers are willing to invest in authentic, high-quality products, adapting to price variations as long as the quality justifies it.

In short, Spanish Serrano ham continues to grow in the German market, consolidating itself as a premium product that has conquered German palates and promises to continue evolving to meet the needs of this potential market.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-12-05 00:20:53 2025-08-06 05:04:55 Details Edit Delete
4751 Danish Crown plans unification between two of its divisions From October 1 the company will unify Danish Crown Pork, which is responsible for slaughtering the owners' pigs and selling fresh meat, and Danish Crown Foods, which is responsible for processing fresh meat throughout, from bacon to sausage, under a single business unit.
"Feeding the Future" is the new strategy that Danish Crown plans to follow from now until 2026, with the aim of becoming the world's leading producer of sustainable meat. This will be possible by halving the company's climate footprint per kilogram of pork by 2030 and becoming a climate-neutral company by 2050.
“If meat is to lose its reputation as a climate culprit, fields must be cultivated wisely, manure must be managed critically, and animals must be cared for carefully. 4327 Lidl and Kaufland offer 50 million euros to farmers affected by ASF
Following a video conference between trading companies and Federal Agriculture Minister Julia Klöckner (CDU), the Schwarz Group, based in Neckarsulm in Baden-Württemberg, promised millions in aid. Starting next year, the funds will be made available through the Animal Welfare Initiative. With the initiative, the Schwarz Group now wants to work out how the support can be specifically distributed and how a payment should be regulated in detail.

The video conference was set up after demonstrations by farmers in front of central stores in the food retail sector. After the conversation, Klöckner stated that it was important that there was an "immediate understanding" between trade and agriculture. "It’s about more appreciation for food and about prices that enable our farmers to add value." Specifically, during the talks, she suggested a code of conduct with which the trade defines its own rules for fair cooperation.

The President of the German Farmers’ Association, Joachim Rukwied, described the Schwarz Group’s offer of millions as a "consolation". "That is a nice gesture and a sign of appreciation for the animal welfare initiative," said Rukwied. "But because of the ongoing price war, our farmers lose this amount almost every week." In order to help farmers in the long term, a clear commitment by the trade to exit the "permanent low-price culture" is necessary.

The Animal Welfare Initiative, founded in 2015, financially supports farmers in taking steps that go beyond the legal standards for the welfare of their livestock. Implementation is monitored by the initiative.

Greenpeace welcomed the Schwarz Group’s announcement as the "correct first step", but at the same time demanded that other food retailers should follow suit. In addition, it is not enough "only to tackle the symptoms". A "system change" is necessary, according to the environmental protection organization. "The competition for the cheapest food must finally come to an end." Farmers need fair prices from the trade and long-term purchase agreements for better-made products.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2020-12-07 10:34:46 2025-08-06 05:05:05 Details Edit Delete
