5849 | ANICE: The Plastic Tax will hit a very suffocated meat industry | The Spanish meat industry has been going through a difficult situation since the beginning of the year as a result of the continued rise in the price of raw materials and the unprecedented increase in energy costs and other inputs. |
The outbreak of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine has only increased this upward spiral in prices, reaching double-digit rates that had not been seen in Spain since before joining the European Union. And it is very likely that fuel and electricity prices, among others, have not yet peaked.

From ANICE it is recalled that only with regard to energy costs, this year the meat industry will pay a total of 1,494.8 million euros, with an increase of 344% compared to 2019.

And now in this complex context, a new threat is added, the entry into force of the Special Tax on non-reusable plastic containers next January, as established in Law 7/2022, of April 8, on waste and soil contaminated, whose impact on the food industry is estimated at 690 million euros.

In addition, it must be taken into account that the draft Royal Decree on Packaging and Packaging Waste will raise the cost of the industry by another 5,000 million euros, seriously endangering the survival of around 2,400 companies and more than 25,000 jobs.

For all these reasons, ANICE joins the request of the Spanish Federation of Food and Drink Industries (FIAB) and requests that the entry into force of the Tax on non-reusable plastic containers be delayed, as well as that it not adopt any regulatory or tax that adds more burdens and costs to companies in such difficult times.

Most member states have not opted for fiscal measures in circular economy legislation, with the exception of Italy, which regulated it before Spain.

However, and an example should be taken, the country has been postponing the entry into force of this tax on successive occasions, aware of the current economic situation.

In addition, Spanish regulations go beyond what is required by European directives and that places Spanish companies in inferior conditions compared to their counterparts in the rest of the EU.

On the other hand, there is not enough food-grade recycled plastic material available to meet the requirements established by the Law.

The meat industry is committed to sustainability. And so, last year it saved 48,952 tons of CO2 thanks to the recycling of its packaging, and implemented a total of 269 eco-design measures to improve the sustainability of its packaging, which meant a saving of 727,444 kilograms of raw materials, 1,284,654 cubic meters of water and 17,809 MW of energy, according to data provided by Ecoembes.

The president of ANICE, Alberto Jiménez, has expressed his concern. “In circumstances such as the current ones, companies cannot assume more costs and therefore we ask our Government to be sensitive to this situation and delay the entry into force of this tax which, if implemented now, will aggravate a situation of particular uncertainty where Companies fight for their survival. It's time to help and not put more obstacles".
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-11-11 04:47:04 | 2025-08-12 02:59:00 | Details Edit Delete | |
8355 | Spain: The meat sector consolidates its leadership in the agri-food industry | The Spanish meat sector continues to strengthen its strategic position within the agri-food industry. |
According to the latest available data, the sector reached a total turnover of €41.337 billion in 2024, representing a 7.96% growth compared to the previous year.

This figure places the meat industry as one of the country's economic drivers, already contributing 23.1% of the total food industry turnover, according to data from the MAPA.

In addition to its economic importance, the sector stands out for its capacity to generate employment. It currently provides a total of 122,942 jobs, representing 24.6% of total employment in the food and beverage industry.

In terms of production, Spain has recorded a figure close to 1.5 million tons of processed meat products in 2024, consolidating its position as one of the European Union's leading producers in this area.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-04-03 00:25:03 | 2025-08-11 12:59:58 | Details Edit Delete | |
8413 | ANICE dissapointed about the live animal exports to Algeria | The Spanish National Association of Meat Industries (ANICE) regrets the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) to allow the export of live sheep to Algeria. |
This measure will reduce supplies to national slaughterhouses in a tense market, where sheep prices have reached historic records due to the sharp decline in the sheep population recorded in recent years.

The Spanish National Association of Meat Industries (ANICE) regrets the decision of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries, and Food (MAPA) to authorize the export of live sheep to Algeria, an agreement that will come into effect on Monday, April 21.

The sharp decline in the sheep population recorded in recent years has reduced the supply of animals, putting pressure on prices for slaughter animals, which are also at historic levels. The rise in animal prices continues to be influenced by the increase in live exports to third countries, with Morocco as the main destination, now joined by Algeria, also in the case of sheep.

Algeria had established itself as a strategic market for Spanish exports of meat and offal, both beef and sheep. This decision puts at risk a fundamental part of the livestock-meat value chain, shifting activity toward a speculative market focused on the trade of live animals, which will only be sustained as long as the favorable situation persists.

To illustrate the importance of this market and its strategic significance, in the case of sheep meat and offal exports, Algeria ranked third globally in volume and second in value in 2024, leading the ranking among third-party countries in both cases. In the case of beef, since 2019, meat and offal exports to Algeria have experienced significant growth: more than 116% in value and more than 40% in volume. This growth has allowed the country to consolidate its position as the fourth-largest global destination for Spanish beef exports and the main one outside the European Union by 2024, with a volume of 26,514 tons. In terms of value, sales reached €149.56 million, placing Algeria as the fourth-largest market worldwide and, once again, the largest outside the European Union. The export of live animals to Algeria has always been an impassable health barrier for the Spanish government (due to the health problems that return shipments from countries with a high prevalence of highly contagious animal diseases can cause), and although only the export of live animals is permitted, by boat, it's legitimate to wonder what the reasons are, or what has happened now that didn't happen before, for this restriction to be lifted.

"At a time marked by a shortage of animals in the domestic market, which has generated tensions and driven sheep prices to record highs, the authorization of live animal exports represents an easy solution that harms the meat chain and all the links that generate added value. This measure directly affects the competitiveness of the sector and the international projection of the Spain Brand" said ANICE's general director, Giuseppe Aloisio.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-04-21 00:30:51 | 2025-08-12 01:11:14 | Details Edit Delete | |
5359 | INTERPORC: "Animal welfare and sustainable production are in our DNA” | The Spanish pig sector "is a success story that has been built on solid pillars, among which a sustainable production model and concern for animal welfare can be highlighted, principles that all agents of the value chain have internalized to form part of our DNA”. |
This was stated in Córdoba by the director of INTERPORC, Alberto Herranz, during his speech at the XII Forum of the National Association of Swine Veterinarians, where he outlined "the seven key pillars that have allowed the Spanish pig sector to become one of the great powers producers and exporters in the world and an international benchmark in sustainable production”.

Likewise, together with respect for the environment and animal welfare, Herranz listed the other five elements that, in his opinion, make up the DNA of the pig sector: innovation, professionalisation, contribution to the structuring of Spain and rural development, international vision of business and food safety.

From INTERPORC, he pointed out "we work with the companies to develop all these points, which has allowed the sector to consolidate itself in the world vanguard".

The next step, he added, “is to communicate it well so that Spanish society sees, beyond interested information and fake news, that the white-coated pig is a powerful and leading sector, as well as sustainable, job-generating and respectful of the environment. animal welfare.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-03-17 09:48:36 | 2025-08-11 03:48:02 | Details Edit Delete | |
6294 | Spanish pork gained 12 percent share of the meat market in Peru | The Spanish pig sector is a world leader that has gained market share in Peru in recent years. Indeed, since SENASA (Peru's National Health Service) recognized the equivalence system for inspection and control of pork meat and offal in Spain in November 2020, exports from that country have grown enormously. If that year there were barely 100 tons worth 1.2 million euros, in 2022 there were 1,708.46 tons worth 5.65 million euros. |
Today, Spain, with a 12% share, ranks fourth in countries that export pork to Peru after Chile (36%), Canada (26%), and the United States (12%).

It is an evolution in line with the one followed by Spanish pigs in the world in the last 25 years. In this period, it has undergone a profound transformation that has made it the third largest producer in the world and the second in the ranking of exports, only behind the US and by very little.

To achieve this, Spanish pig companies have become a model of modern farming. A condition that they have acquired from the implementation of the European production model, one of the strictest in the world, going even further with more demanding self-regulations than those imposed by the European law itself in matters as important to the consumer as animal well-being, in which Spain is today an international benchmark.

This has translated into products that guarantee the highest standards of health, food safety, quality and production certifications. Conditions highly appreciated internationally and that have led the health authorities of more than 111 countries, to which those of the European Union must be added, to open their borders to Spanish pork products to feed their population.

Very interesting conditions for the Peruvian market, which currently has a rate of consumption of pork products of 9 kilos per inhabitant per year, but whose expected evolution is around 15 kilos between 2025 and 2027, with regions that will even reach 20 kilos per inhabitant per year.

In addition, the communication campaigns on pork meat and production biosecurity have improved the knowledge of Peruvian consumers and reinforced their demands. For this reason, pork from Spain is seen as a very interesting option both for the present and for the immediate future, especially for products such as sausages or ham, which have a greater margin of growth since 94% of current exports from Spain correspond to meat, offal and bacon.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-31 00:25:00 | 2025-08-12 02:30:37 | Details Edit Delete | |
6846 | INTERPORC: Communication is one of the most important tool for the pork sector | The Spanish pork sector has a high social and economic component that must be adequately transmitted to society through good communication. This has been reflected in the round table 'Challenges in communicating the livestock-meat chain to the consumer', held within the framework of the Lorca Livestock, Industrial and Agri-Food Fair (SEPOR). |
Alberto Herranz, director of the Interprofessional INTERPORC, and participant in the conference, highlighted that "the good work of companies in the pork sector provides us with very powerful messages that we must take advantage of and communicate appropriately".

In this sense, he has given as an example that "43% of direct employment in the sector are women who are present throughout the chain, from senior management to researchers, industry workers, farmers, veterinarians... In the pig industry, equality "gender is something natural, and that message cannot be transmitted by many sectors".

Herranz has also highlighted that “we invest in rural areas and 43% of farms are located in towns with less than 5,000 inhabitants, which allows these towns to be provided with other services and infrastructure that establishes population. Communication is our tool to tell that part of society that is concerned about the abandonment of rural areas that pork is a solution that creates a future for families.”

Regarding hoaxes, Herranz has pointed out that “in the face of false and biased stories, we have the reality of the data. Let us communicate that official figures indicate that we are only responsible for 2.43% of Spain's GHGs. That 82% of the water footprint attributed to us is rainwater that would continue to fall even without animals. "That we have reduced the use of water by 30% per kilo of meat produced between 1990 and 2020".

Herranz has pointed out the importance of approaching target audiences with messages and proposals that capture their interest. In this direction, he has referred to actions carried out by the Interprofessional such as sponsorships of the Queens League, the Kings & Queens Cup and the 'The Grand Prix' program, or direct events such as the day 'Improving women's leadership in the Spanish agri-food sector', held recently.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-11-02 00:15:03 | 2025-08-12 02:02:28 | Details Edit Delete | |
8419 | The cured ham sector exported 60,846 tons in 2024 | The Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium (CJSE) announces export figures for Spanish cured hams and shoulders for 2024, according to data obtained from the Spanish Tax Agency. During this period, a total of 60,845.70 tons were exported, compared to the 59,838.25 tons exported in 2023; representing a 1.68% increase in volume. Furthermore, the sector exported a total value of € 734,645,988.83 , an 11.77% increase compared to the previous year. |
Meanwhile, the average price per kilo of ham has increased by 9.92% during this period, reaching €12.07 compared to 2023, when it was €10.98/kg. In the European Union , it stood at €11.20 compared to €14.02 in third countries, representing increases of 10.55% and 6.24%, respectively.

This increase in the average price in third countries is explained by less competition, the tendency to work with intermediaries, and higher shipping costs.

Álvaro Díaz de Liaño, Marketing and Promotion Director of the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium, highlights that, “thanks to the intense dissemination work and the firm commitment to the export of high-quality products, the sector has managed to exceed the good results obtained in 2023 , especially in value . Although the challenges facing the sector are significant, we highlight the good results in terms of the progress of Spanish Serrano ham in third countries, where for yet another year, we have also continued to increase the presence of "ConsorcioSerrano” ham".

Overall, European Union countries imported a total of 42,428.39 tons during this year, a 1.82% decrease; while third countries recorded a volume of 18,417.31 tons, a 10.78% increase. Thus, during 2024, the European Union accounted for 69.73% of cured ham exports, while third countries accounted for 30.27%.

Main markets

Within the European Union, the main reference markets for cured ham have continued to be countries such as France, with a volume amounting to 12,202.54 tonnes, followed by Germany, with a volume of 11,534.75 tonnes.

However, while it is true that, after many years of Serrano ham's presence there, a certain oversupply and signs of exhaustion are estimated, that is, they are experiencing little or no growth, and if they do, it is based on the decline in final prices and, therefore, in exporters' profit margins.

In terms of value, the markets that have seen the greatest growth in cured ham imports are Austria, by 28.86%; Portugal, by 14.58%; and Denmark, by 11.10% —markets of lesser commercial importance in terms of volume.

On the other hand, the third countries that have seen the most significant growth in terms of value have been Mexico, with 62.1%; the United States, with 31.37%; and Colombia, with 23.78%. It is worth noting that these North and Central American markets are precisely where the sector's total volume growth is rooted, as the European Union, Asia, and Oceania have all experienced declines.

The United Kingdom, for its part, is the market with the highest prices at €17.25/kg, an 8.23% increase compared to the previous year; followed by Switzerland at €16.51/kg.

In terms of formats, 16.47% of the pieces exported during this period were bone-in , which led to a 9.02% decrease in volume and a 0.23% decrease in value. Chile and Colombia are the two countries that have recorded the greatest growth in the average price of this format.

Boneless ham, for its part, accounted for 82.22% of total exports in 2024, equivalent to a 4.51% increase in volume and a 14.36% increase in value.

On the other hand, the remaining 1.31% corresponds to bone-in shoulder exports , which represent a small commercial significance, with a total value of €9,402,839.33 and a total volume of 789.37 tons. Specifically, the most important destination markets for this format are France and the United States.

However, the boneless format has experienced an increase in both value and volume, of 14.36% and 4.51% respectively, in addition to 9.43% in terms of average price.

In short, and as explained by the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium, the 2024 results were expected, as exporting companies adjusted their tariffs at the end of 2023, leading them to face the past year with a slight price increase, which the market ultimately reflected. This is due to various reasons, the main one being that Serrano ham exported during the two-year period 2022-2023 suffered the highest costs in terms of raw materials and other aspects that producers have been forced to pass on.

On the other hand, the CJSE estimates that data corresponding to Iberian ham exports are growing year on year, especially in absolute value, estimating that its exports represent between 4 and 4.5% of the total in terms of volume, as well as between 12 and 13% in terms of value. In other words, it is estimated that around 2,600 and 2,700 tons are exported , equivalent to a turnover of around €90 to €95 million, not including the export of Iberian cured meats.

In conclusion, the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium maintains high hopes for 2025, a year in which they expect the 2024 trend in terms of volume to improve and the value trend to continue, while improving, as far as possible, average retail prices to the consumer. "We must continue to focus on consolidating strategic markets and promoting quality Serrano ham to ensure long-term, sustainable growth. To achieve this, profitability is a key factor", concludes Álvaro Díaz de Liaño, Marketing and Promotion Director of the Spanish Serrano Ham Consortium.
| 1 | Retail | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-04-22 00:30:54 | 2025-08-12 02:35:25 | Details Edit Delete | |

1535 | The Spanish shopping basket is considered competitive compared with other EU states. |
The latest Eurostat report shows that the Spanish shopping basket is 5% cheaper than the European average, only bread and cereals overpassing the average by 6%. Oil, meat, non-alcoholic beverages and fish have lower average prices than in the EU, while fruits, vegetables and potatoes are on average.
Prices differ a lot within the EU, with Denmark paying 42% more than the average and its price level is the highest, followed by Luxembourg (27% more), Ireland and Sweden (both 25% more), Finland (22%) and the Kingdom United (17%). At the opposite extreme are Bulgaria (48% below), Romania (52%) and Poland (56%).
Felipe Medina, director of the agrifood chain ASEDAS, believes that there are several reasons for the competitivity of the Spanish shopping basket. "The distribution chain is efficient, we only have to look at Italy, which usually has higher prices, silent nighttime discharge and the variety of products and prices is relevant, in fact, distributors in Spain have 500,000 products to choose from. they between 10,000 and 12,000 go to stores so you can look for the specific buyer profile. The Spaniards spend 100,000 million to eat, of which the third part of them are destined to eat out, a percentage that fell in the crisis", he said.
Spaniards are looking now for healthy, sustainable, easy-to-cook products and the boom is recorded in the prepared salads segment that already accounts for 60 million euros and grows at the rate of 12%.
Also, frozen products are registering a growth of 5.1%, especially salmon (13.2%), cod and blue whiting (11.1%) and hake and whiting (5%). Fish dishes (+ 37.3% in sales), or sushi (+ 12.5%) have become temporary substitutes for fresh fish. Not in vain, the prices of these have gone up with trout (16%), hake and whiting (9.9%), rooster and sole (7.4%) at the top. Cod and fresh salmon are the exceptions, which go down and increase sales, according to La Informacion magazine.
Fresh meat occupies the third place among the foods most consumed by the Spaniards. This is the main data for the meat sector of the Report on food consumption in Spain 2017 presented by Minister Luis Planas, reports CdeComunicacion portal. 6152 | INTERPORC achieves its second Guinness World Record | The Spanish white layer pork Interprofessional (INTERPORC) has achieved its second Guinness Record with the elaboration of the largest number in the world made with photographs taken with the help of the thousands of citizens who have participated in the action. |
This is the number 415,000, which represents the number of people who work in the Spanish pig sector and which has been trained at an event held in Madrid, with a total of 6,300 photos taken in recent months.

The INTERPORC mobile unit toured different cities in Spain last year to bring society closer to the reality of the white layer pig sector. A photo booth allowed the people who participated in the campaign to be photographed, so these photos are the ones that have now served to break this Guinness record, with dimensions of 8.20m x 1.50m.

The previous record of these characteristics managed to gather 5,867 photographs, so that the one obtained by INTERPORC has clearly exceeded that figure, with a total of 6,300. The record has been certified with the presence of Anouk de Timary, adjudicator of Guinness World Records Limited , who has congratulated the pig sector in Spain for its ability to mobilize. An expert in inventory auditing and a witness specialized in photography also attended the event.

This is the second Guinness World Records obtained by INTERPORC for the second consecutive year, after the achievement in 2022 of the largest mural of origami pigs in the world, also thanks to the collaboration of thousands of people who were encouraged to build paper pigs with the origami technique.

The triple sustainability of Spanish pigs

Before the award was delivered, a colloquium was held on the Spanish white-coated pig sector, which is the engine of the economy and generates more than 415,000 jobs. Their contribution to the economic and social development of a good part of the rural areas of the country was discussed, as well as their commitment to triple sustainability.

The deputy director general of Food Quality Control and Agri-food Laboratories of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food (MAPA), Javier Maté Caballero, has participated and has stressed that the sector "is part of our culture and our heritage, which we transmit to the following generations, and that also generates wealth”.

For his part, Alberto Herranz, director of INTERPORC, has emphasized that in addition to those 415,000 jobs created, "42% of direct employment in the pig sector is female." He also recalled that Spain is the leading European producer of pork meat and the third worldwide, as well as the second exporter: "We export more than 3 million tons of meat, worth more than 7,700 million euros, which generates employment for talented, young and with gender equality”.

From an environmental point of view, Herranz added that "greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions have been reduced by 40% for each kilo of meat and the use of water has decreased by 30%".

In this sense, INTERPORC's International Director, Daniel de Miguel, stressed that “the pig sector is sustainable from an economic, social and environmental point of view. Economically, because we are a power in production and exports with a positive trade balance of 7,400 million euros. In the social area, because we generate 415,000 direct, indirect and induced jobs, thus giving life and a future to the rural environment. And environmental, because we are aligned with the European Green Pact and with the goal of achieving neutral climate impact by 2050”.
| 1 | Events | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-02-18 11:28:27 | 2025-08-09 18:55:32 | Details Edit Delete | |

6628 | Spanish white pork sector: working to protect the environment | The Spanish white pork sector embodies “modern livestock handling”: professionalized, innovative, respectful of the sensitivity and needs of the animals, and focused on caring for the environment and reducing environmental impact. |
To this end, few sectors have made as many efforts as the white pork sector, having reduced greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) per each kilo of meat by 57% and nitrogen emissions by 50% per animal in the last 30 years.

It should be noted that, despite occupying a significant percentage of the territory and generating an activity with many production centers (66,000 farms) and 415,000 jobs, our weight over the national greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions as a whole it is barely 2.43%.

All these data show (during a period of great growth in sectoral production) that thanks to the optimization of livestock feeding, genetic and management systems and the application of the best available livestock management practices, the sector has increased enormously its productive efficiency. In addition, thanks to the continuous improvement in these areas and new best practices and technologies for the reduction, capture and reuse of methane, everything allows us to foresee that in a period of 10 years (Horizon 2030) the sector will have reduced to practically zero its "net environmental pollution”.

Additionally, currently the Spanish white pork sector works in numerous projects, both in research and implementation of renewable energy systems, from different technologies, such as: solar panels and panels thermal or photovoltaic, geothermal energy, wind energy and energy from biomass or biogas from manure.

From the Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC) we are part of the Spanish UN Global Compact, supporting all its activities and actively working on fourteen Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in order to help transformation of our world into a more sustainable one by 2030.

On our website, in order to help farms meet these objectives, a "Guide for the minimization of gas emissions in pig farms" is available online through in Spanish.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-07-31 07:30:31 | 2025-08-11 19:51:35 | Details Edit Delete | |
6035 | Comprehensive Sustainability of Spanish White Pork | The Spanish white pork sector has always been at the vanguard of trends and is well aware that its existence depends on its sustainability. For this reason, it has spent years working on this concept until it has become its essence, the strategic pillar of its activity. |
Consequently, from the Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork(INTERPORC), as a non-profit entity made up of all sectors of the white pork value chain (production, transformation and commercialization), we carry out actions in 14 of the Sustainable Development Goals that we have incorporated into our Strategic Plan in order to develop activities aimed at promoting the implementation in the Spanish white pork sector of policies and commitments to support a "Comprehensive Sustainability" and a "Development Sustainable Sector”.

From an economic point of view, it has a powerful primary and industrial structure that has led it to be the leading European producer of pork and the second largest exporter in the world, generating wealth and employment at a national level.

From an environmental point of view, few sectors have made as many efforts as the white pork sector, having reduced nitrogen emissions by 50% per animal in the last 30 years.

From the social point of view, it is an important backbone that generates employment in small towns and that fights against the depopulation of rural areas, proving to be a sector capable of generating wealth, fixing population and fighting against gender inequality.

In conclusion, the sector promotes a sustainable production model that guarantees care, protection and respect for the environment, the care and welfare of livestock at all stages, the implementation of good practices on farms and throughout the value of chain, and food safety thanks to the traceability system from Farm to Fork.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-01-19 04:14:52 | 2025-08-12 01:44:10 | Details Edit Delete | |
6202 | Spanish White Pork Sector: Decent work and economic growth | The Spanish white pork sector has very numerous, very professional and highly qualified human resources; with extensive experience in multiple types of activities and management systems in all types of geographical areas. |
From the Spanish Inter-professional Agri-Food Organization for White Pork (INTERPORC), as a non-profit entity made up of all sectors of the white pork value chain (production, transformation and commercialization), we can say that the white pork sector is committed with SDG 8 (Decent work and economic growth).
This is precisely demonstrated by the number of employees the sector has: more than 415.000 people, including direct, indirect and induced jobs.
Thanks to its high degree of implantation in the rural environment, the sector is a backbone of the territory, fixes population and improves the quality of life of thousands of towns. In fact, 43% of Spanish pork farms, 45% of pork industries and 75% of the Spanish pork census are located in rural areas (populations of <5000 inhabitants).
This demonstrates the importance of a sector that has an extensive experience and specialization in the generation of activity and employment in rural areas.
From an economic point of view, it is a growth engine for the Spanish economy: represents 17.5% of final agricultural production and 42.7% of final livestock production, 17.22% of industrial GDP and represented 18.500 million euros of annual turnover. In addition, it generates €7.719.000 million thanks to pork exports.

Consequently, the pork sector is in a position to provide real, effective and practical support in the application of the different strategies designed to evolve towards a new "Food System Model" based on a powerful, sustainable rural environment that generates employment and effective in the fight against depopulation within the framework of the commitments of the European Green Deal.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-03-02 03:11:38 | 2025-08-11 19:51:33 | Details Edit Delete | |
5578 | IAWS: Animal welfare beyond the law | The Spanish white pork sector is at the vanguard of the world in terms of animal welfare. It is a very serious statement, but perfectly supported by the facts and data. |

It is well known that in Spain the European production model is followed, which is one of the most reliable in the world. But, in addition, we have taken a step forward by demanding a little more of ourselves with the creation of the “Welfare Commitment Certified” seal, whose IAWS (INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain) Animal welfare and Biosecurity Technical Regulation is the most advanced in the world.

The seal has become a perfect endorsement of the will of pork companies to achieve excellence in animal welfare, something that is demonstrated with two details.

Firstly, although it is voluntary, in its first three years of existence, more than 60% of the production of white pork has already been certified, which shows the will of the sector in this matter. In addition, the seal is available to millions of consumers through some of the biggest
retail companies in Spain such as Alcampo (Auchan), El Corte Inglés, Carrefour or Aldi, among others.

Secondly, the demanding IAWS Technical Regulation leads pork companies to anticipate the requirements established by law. Actually, a good example of this is the forthcoming approval of the Royal Decree on Video Surveillance in Slaughterhouses.

By the time the law has come to regulate this practice, the pork companies that have the "Welfare Commitment Certified" seal have long since incorporated a closed-circuit television (CCTV) system in the areas in which live animals are housed.

Undoubtedly, the latter is a great example that the first one to make demands on itself is the sector itself, which at all times is trying to anticipate the demands of consumers and the law, something that clearly places the Spanish white pork sector at the vanguard of the world in terms of animal welfare.

For further information, please check our website:
https://www.bienestaranimalcertificado.com/animal-welfare-certified/
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-07-18 04:45:43 | 2025-08-11 10:46:07 | Details Edit Delete |
