1079 US meat industry is threatened by oversupply The domestic demand cannot keep the pace with the production and the Chinese tariffs could trigger a crisis.
Chinese tariffs are seen as one of the elements that could trigger a crisis for the American meat industry, the other one being the increasing supplies in the US, as Chris Hurt, an economist at Purdue University, declared for Drovers magazine.
"I think this year we're talking about the demand will not be strong enough to outweigh the supply increase. We're going to have 4% more beef in the marketplace, 3.5% to 4% more pork, and about 2% more poultry", expressed his concerns Hurt.
At this point, the pressure exercised by the Chinese tariffs on pork has provoked losses at about $12 per head. Still, this is only the beginning of what could turn into a contraction of the pig herd in the US.
"Now again, the losses aren't won't be big enough this spring and summer to force contraction, but as we get into the fall we think and winter time we think we'll see losses $20 to $25 dollars a head. That's big enough to start stopping the expansion, levelling off the herd or maybe even some contraction into 2019", said the economist.
The latest quarterly report from US Department of Agriculture estimates that the US pig inventory stood at 72.9 million head, up by 3% compared with Q1 2017. It is also the largest March pig herd on record going back to 1988, mentions AHDB.
    Industry 2018-04-12 07:00:08 2025-08-06 19:05:30 Details Edit Delete

1081 Rhug Estate farm moves from organic lamb to exotic meat Post-Brexit uncertainties forced a Welsh lamb producer to look for an unusual alternative.
One of Wales's largest farms is moving its production from lamb to another product, quite unusual for the region: venison of Japanese sika deer.

The Rhug Estate is one of the UK's bigger producer of organic lamb but the uncertainty raised by the Brexit process is forcing the owner, Lord Newborough, to look for other alternatives.
A difficult access to the EU market could be disastrous for the Welsh producer, so the solution adopted was to import sika deer from Japan to ensure export markets like Hong Kong or Macau for this exotic meat. Also, the sika deer meat is delivered to some high-end restaurants in London, as BBC mentions.
"Is a highly saleable product that top chefs are calling for and a way to ensure the farms future after the Brexit", explained Lord Newborough. The venison is higher in vitamins and minerals such as omega 3 and significantly lower in fat than other meats.
The area where the farm is located has about 5,000 breeding ewes, producing approximately 7,500 lambs each year. Official figures showed that 93% of Welsh lamb exports were destined for the EU.
"A large percentage of the lambs we produce go to the continent but we don't know what the future will be exporting to the EU. We're very accustomed to sending it across the channel where it's readily received, but getting access to new markets is going to be difficult.
We are competing with the southern hemisphere where they produce a much bigger lamb and dominate markets like Singapore and the Middle East.", said the owner of Rhug Estate farm.
Gareth Jones, manager of the Rhug Estate, is also worried about the lack of perspective after Brexit. "The problem at the moment is that we don't know where we'll be going with Brexit and that's the biggest issue for the agricultural sector, not just in Wales but throughout the UK", he explained.
    Industry 2018-04-12 10:08:57 2025-08-07 22:19:43 Details Edit Delete
1082 Brazilian beef remains on top of meat products exported In March, the South American country has registered a record month for beef exports.
Brazil's beef remains the best selling meat abroad as shows recent data reported by the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Food Supply (MAPA). The meat was on the second place among the agribusiness products exported, with beef maintaining the highest position in this category.

Compared with the same month of 2017, the raw beef exports of Brazil registered an increase in value by 19.9%. The main destination for Brazilian raw beef were countries such as China ($35.28 million), Hong Kong $39.81 million), Egypt ($40.28 million) and Chile ($24.09 million). Total beef exports of Brazil, including raw beef, processed and offal, have reached to $591.97 million.

Poultry and pork exports declined by 9.7% and 23.4%, respectively. The causes for this contractions were various, chicken export being affected by both the BRF investigation and a new set of halal regulation imposed by Saudi Arabia while pork exports are facing a temporary ban imposed by Russia.Food imports fell by $96.09 million compared to March 2017, with fish being the most purchased product: $142.72 million.
    Industry 2018-04-12 15:00:27 2025-08-07 20:51:52 Details Edit Delete
1083 USMEF: February beef exports surpassed year-ago levels The US exported more beef in February than a year ago by 11 percent totaling 100,593 mt. Meanwhile, the export value increased by 18 percent to $599.8 million in the same period, according to statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and compiled by the US Meat Export Federation.

Analysts at USMEF explained that although this was the lowest monthly value total since May 2017, it is the highest on record for the month of February.

The export volume recorded between January and February went up 10 percent compared to the first two months from 2017 to 206,079 mt, while the export value in the same period was $1.22 billion, up by 20 percent compared to the levels from a year ago.

Exports accounted for 13.6 percent of total beef production in February, up one full percentage point from a year ago. For muscle cuts only, the percentage exported was 10.8 percent (up from 10.1 percent last year). Through February, beef exports accounted for 13 percent of total production (up from 12.4 percent) and 10.4 percent for muscle cuts (up from 9.8 percent). February beef export value averaged $322.29 per head of fed slaughter, up 16 percent from a year ago. Through February, per-head export value averaged $306.69, up 15 percent.

Chilled beef shipments to Japan, Korea and Taiwan drive export growth; Mexico and Hong Kong also trend higher

Beef export volume to leading market Japan declined in February (20,314 mt, -15 percent year-over-year), as the frozen beef safeguard tariff (50 percent, up temporarily from 38.5 percent) contributed to a slowdown in frozen shipments. However, February export value to Japan was down only slightly at $133.4 million. Through February, total exports to Japan were 4 percent below last year’s volume pace at 44,282 mt, but still increased 9 percent in value to $282 million. This included an 18 percent increase in chilled beef exports to 22,809 mt, valued at $175 million (up 29 percent). Japan’s safeguard tariff on imports of frozen beef from the United States (and from other suppliers that do not have a free trade agreement with Japan) expired March 31, so the tariff rate for both frozen and chilled imports from the U.S. is now 38.5 percent. Japan’s tariffs on imports of Australian chilled and frozen beef edged slightly lower on April 1 and now stand at 29.3 percent and 26.9 percent, respectively, under the Japan-Australia Economic Partnership Agreement.

Beef exports to South Korea maintained a torrid pace in February, increasing 24 percent from a year ago in volume (16,193 mt) and 31 percent in value ($112.4 million). Through February, exports to Korea climbed 18 percent in volume to 33,326 mt and were 32 percent above last year’s record value pace at $234.8 million. This included chilled beef exports of 7,231 mt (up 34 percent year-over-year) valued at $68 million (up 44 percent). U.S. beef is driving new consumption trends in Korea, where retailers and foodservice operators have intensified their focus on steak cuts and are highlighting features such as dry and wet aging. USMEF continues to educate the Korean meat trade and consumers about the quality and convenience of U.S. steaks in this increasingly protein-centric market.

Through the first two months of 2018, other highlights for U.S. beef include:

Exports to Mexico, which is a critical destination for beef rounds, shoulder clods and variety meat, were 10 percent above last year’s pace in volume (39,987 mt) and 19 percent higher in value ($175 million). This included an 11 percent increase in variety meat export volume (18,720 mt) and an impressive 36 percent jump in variety meat value ($44.4 million).

Partly driven by demand for the Chinese New Year holiday, exports to Hong Kong jumped 41 percent in volume (22,807 mt) from a year ago and 61 percent in value ($168.6 million). Exports to China, which resumed in June 2017, totaled 1,187 mt valued at $11.1 million.

In Taiwan, an outstanding destination for chilled U.S. beef, exports increased 25 percent from a year ago in volume (8,106 mt) and 42 percent in value ($78.2 million). Chilled exports to Taiwan were up 53 percent in volume (3,800 mt) and 61 percent in value ($48 million) as the U.S. holds 72 percent of Taiwan’s chilled beef market.
Exceptional growth in Chile and Colombia pushed exports to South America up 68 percent year-over-year in volume (5,296 mt) and 62 percent in value ($25.2 million). Exports to Brazil, which resumed in April of last year, totaled 215 mt valued at $2 million.

Strong performances in Indonesia and Vietnam pushed beef exports to the ASEAN region 42 percent ahead of last year’s pace in volume (6,794 mt) and 34 percent higher in value ($36.7 million). The region is especially strong for beef variety meat, with exports up 74 percent in volume (2,008 mt) and 93 percent in value ($4.4 million).
Strong growth in Angola and steady volumes to South Africa pushed beef exports to Africa up 26 percent year-over-year in volume (1,981 mt) and 77 percent higher in value ($3.1 million).

    Market 2018-04-12 16:37:37 2025-08-08 07:20:42 Details Edit Delete
1084 Italy's pork imports remained stable in 2017 Italy imported 966,100 tons of pork during 2017, the country holding its spot as the third largest importer of pig meat in the world although the quantity recorded was down by 3,000 tons year-over-year, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

AHDB analyst Abigail Schofield says Italy imported most of its pork from EU countries, Germany being its main supplier that accounted for over a third of the total market share. Schofield says that, still, Germany exported 5% less pork to Italy in 2017 compared to the previous year.

Spain's pork exports to Italy also declined by 2%. Whereas, Italy's imports from Denmark and Spain rose by 6% and 23% respectively, after significant declines recorded in 2016. Schofield says trade in 2017 was more in line with historical figures. Notably, Poland increased their shipments to Italy by 6%.

"The live import market shrunk year-on-year in 2017, with volumes down 1% to almost 1.6 million head. Denmark, the main source of live pigs for Italy reduced its deliveries by 8% year-on-year, similarly Spain recorded a 14% decline. In contrast, the Netherlands increased its exports to Italy by 11%, which will have countered some of the reductions elsewhere," added Schofield.
    Market 2018-04-12 16:55:02 2025-08-08 01:48:38 Details Edit Delete

1086 EU pig prices down in March
AHDB analyst Rebecca Oborne says that the prices slipped after a strong increase during February. The measure currently stands €16 below year earlier levels. The decline was not entirely unexpected as tight supplies were reported in February but the situation was not expected to last which is reflected in the recent weakening of the reference price.

Of the key pig meat producing countries, Poland recorded the largest decline during the past four weeks, declining by €7.19, to stand at €142.83/100kg. The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark also all recorded price declines.

Conversely, the Spanish and French reference prices both recorded gains, of €7.71 and €4 respectively.
    Industry 2018-04-13 06:22:42 2025-08-07 23:20:27 Details Edit Delete

1094 Spain and Hungary received EU funding for lamb promotion campaign Spain and Hungary have received the European Union's support for a new campaign to promote lamb and goat meat consumption among their domestic consumers, according to a statement released by the European Commission.
The Spanish inter-professional association for sheep and goat meat INTEROVIC and its Hungarian counterpart, JKTTSZ, will launch a program called "European campaign to promote lamb and goat meat in Spain and Hungary" between May 2018 and December 2020. Both associations received a budget of €6,825,000 from the EU.
Each year, approximatively 2.7 million euros will be invested in the campaign. Spain’s campaign budget requires a sum of €6 million and the EU contribution will be €4.8 million, while Bulgaria's campaign budget is €825,000 and the country will receive €660,000.
The targeted audience for the new European program refers to the whole channel starting from sector, distribution, wholesalers, purchasing managers, traditional stores and Horeca sector. While regarding the final consumer, the campaign will place its focus especially on the population segment aged 25-45 years old and it will aim to increase the number of consumers that are over 45 years old.
The EU's objective is to increase lamb and goat meat consumption by 0.2% annually through new product presentations and by underlining the sustainable and natural character and differentiated flavor of these types of meats.
The main challenge of this campaign is to strengthen the presence of new cuts in stores and to encourage consumers to eat lamb and goat meat not only seasonally.
According to the EU's statement, Spain demonstrates a renewed potential for growth of domestic consumption after 15 years of decrease in the consumption of sheep/goat meat. Furthermore, after two years of communication campaigns the negative tendency of consumption is finally beginning to demonstrate a positive trend.
On the other hand, Hungary shows a great growth potential regarding lamb and goat meat consumption, since it is one of the few countries in the EU that has been experiencing growth in sheep meat production, which is an exception to the rule compared to the global performance of EU sheep meat producers.
    Market 2018-04-14 06:26:27 2025-08-08 05:03:09 Details Edit Delete

1097 MRI technology used to scan meat products for quality MRI is no longer a technology used in medicine but also a quality marker for different meat products. Scientists at the University of Extremadura in Badajoz, Spain, have found a new purpose for the Magnetic Resonance Imaging machines, one that is already available for the meat industry.
Trinidad Perez-Palacios, one of the medics that discovered the new application for the MRI and a co-author for the method, explained the way the industry can take advantage of the technology already in use: “The technique allows knowing parameters such as the amount of fat, moisture, color and some sensory attributes of the product. And, in the case of ham, also monitoring the salt diffusion during the different stages of thematuration process”.

The advantage is that a producer of premium products, such as traditional ham (Jamon Iberico) or loins doesn’t have to alter the product to take a sample and analyze it for a test of quality. Using the same noninvasive way, as in medicine, the device developed for the meat industry can determine the quality characteristics without using another destructive method.

“We put at the disposal of the meat industry an effective method to obtain images of any meat piece - not only loins and hams - in a harmless and non-invasive way, allowing, in addition, its subsequent commercialization”, said Perez-Palacios.
    Technology 2018-04-15 06:37:04 2025-08-08 05:18:04 Details Edit Delete
1098 One of the big players in the Romanian meat industry, Agricola Group is making its way on the external markets promoting a range of products that are well known in the Romanian communities from Europe and around the world.
Starting with “Micii gustosi” (a Romanian minced meat traditional dish, similar to chevapchichi, and the company’s best-selling product on the export markets) and continuing with a variety of raw dried salami, including the famous “Salam de Sibiu”, the company is targeting the external markets by promoting products that follow the old recipes in preparing the meat.
Present already on the German, French and Spanish markets with these type of products, Agricola is targeting now the
US market, as Angelica ?mil, general manager at Salbac SA (a company owned by Agricola Group), confirmed in an interview for EuroMeatNews.

EuroMeatNews: What are the financial results reported by Agricola Group and Salbac SA at the end of 2017 and how do you see the regional market evolving in this year?

Angelica ?mil: In 2017, Agricola Group had a turnover of RON 683.183 million (EUR 146.78 million), up by 5.31% compared to the previous year, taking in consideration the fact that the company exited from GA-Nutri?ie Animala SA and Suinprod SA businesses.
Salbac SA registered a turnover of RON 124.834 million (EUR 26.82 million), up by 2.5% than 2016. In fact, the real growth stands at 10.5%, considering the effects resulted from the new fiscal rules, applied since June 2016.
2018 looks like a difficult year for the salami producers due to a price rise in commodities, but also from a bad publicity. Fortunately, most of the revenues made by Salbac SA is based on the sales of raw dried salamis with a high content of meat and low on additives. We are predicting a small increase in sales for our company.

EMN: At the end of 2017, you announced your intention to build a pilot unit to develop a research program to eliminate the additives form the raw dried products. How does this project evolves and what other investments are projected for this year?

A.S: The project will be functional in May but we’ve been working on the improvement of our recipes and eliminating the additives from these type of products for some years now. Besides that project, we are considering investments in developing our businesses and improving the productivity in our facilities.

EMN: What is the rate of premium products in the company’s portfolio and what sells better in the export markets?

A.S: Salbac’s portfolio has a rate of 80% of premium (raw dried) products. On the foreign markets „Micii gustosi” and „Salam de Sibiu AGRICOLA” are our best selling products.

EMN: What is the secret behind the success of your „Salam de Sibiu AGRICOLA” product?

A.S: „Salam de Sibiu AGRICOLA” is made following the exact traditional recipe: a minimum 70 days of maturation, no starter cultures, from high quality chilled meat received from certified suppliers. At the same time, a great advantage is given by the technological capacity for raw dried salami at Salabac’s facilities, one that outperforms
any other competitor on the Romanian market.

EMN: How is much does it count the Spanish market for your exports and what is the company’s relationship with the
retailers in this area?

A.S: Spain is our top destination for exports but we have accessed this market through the Romanian distributors present in the area.

EMN: What certification do you have for your premium brands and of what importance are those in promoting your products on the external markets?

A.S: We already have all the European certificates of quality that matter, starting with IFS and BRC (Class A).
It’s true though, that you can’t start a discussion about a potential partnership abroad as long you don’t have these certificates.

EMN: On what other markets do you intend to expand this year?

A.S: Besides Spain, we are also present in the German and French markets but we want to increase our operations in these countries. Meanwhile, we are on our way to receive the certification for the export to the US.

EMN: How important is the brand on a market ruled by the trends given by consumer and to what requirements you have
to respond in order to ensure a bigger market share for you products?

A.S: AGRICOLA brand has become lately a warrant for quality and taste and the consumer's perception is to refer to our
products as a benchmark in a market that gets more and more unpredictable.

EMN: In terms of volume, what was Salbac’s production in 2017 and what volume do you predict to produce this year?

A.S: In 2017, Salbac has produced and sell about 5,580 tons of products. This year we expect to see an increase by 8 to 10 percent.

EMN: What other products are going to be launched this year by your company and to what product range they will enter?

A.S: We are going to focus on the raw dried and fresh range’s of products, especially on those delivered to Horeca industry, but we also intend to present innovative products in order to respect our leadership status in the raw dried segment of Romanian market.
    Industry 2018-04-15 06:46:01 2025-08-07 18:42:24 Details Edit Delete
