1139 | Slight decline of consumer sentiment in Europe | The Southern flank is flooded with pessimism while Central and Northern Europe are positive about a future rise of incomes, reports GfK. |
A study released by GfK shows mixed emotions in Europe regarding the consumer sentiment. In the first quarter of 2018, consumer sentiment in Europe remained at a relatively stable level. In March, however, the GfK Consumer Climate for the 28 EU states showed a slight decline, reaching a level of 20.6 points. In December 2017, it stood at 21.1 points.

The decline was fueled by the pessimism of consumers from the Southern flank in countries such as Spain, Portugal, France, Italy and Greece, where there are no big expectations for a rise in incomes for the next months. The same feeling is present in Austria and Romania, mentioned the study.

Meanwhile, consumers in the Czech Republic, Poland and Belgium have a far more positive view of the economic development of their countries. The same feeling is present in Great Britain and Bulgaria and the optimism pushed up the income expectations index by 1.3 to a level of 16.3 in March.

Germany and the Netherlands are showing a steady level, similar to the last quarter of 2017. For 2018, GfK predicts an increase in private household consumer spending in the European Union from 1.5 to 2 percent in real terms.

| 1 | Retail | 2018-04-20 10:40:44 | 2025-08-05 20:16:47 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1140 | 20 Brazilian meat plants banned by EU officials | Meat exports are decreasing by 35% and Brazil is looking for new markets to cover the losses. |
The European Union has decided to suspend imports of Brazilian meat from 20 plants, mostly poultry producers. The announcement was not a very big surprise for the Brazilian counterpart as the corruption scandal that led to this situation is keeping all eyes on the South American nation.
Still, the losses are big, meat exports from this facilities to the EU market accounting for a 35% share in total meat exports. Agriculture Minister Blairo Maggi told reporters that the Brazilian authorities are considering a new round of negotiations to reverse the measure, reports Reuters.
Maggi recommended that Brazilian producers affected by the EU decision "will have to search for new markets to quickly substitute these exports."
12 of the facilities are owned by BRF, the largest poultry producer in the country, and the company investigated in a food safety case. The rest of 8 plants are owned by smaller companies and the second largest poultry producer in Brazil, JBS does not have any facilities affected by this measure, informs Nasdaq.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-20 12:44:04 | 2025-08-06 14:23:51 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1141 | Alliance Group sends its first batch of skin-pack cuts to Hong Kong | New Zealand-based meat producer Alliance Group has announced it shipped its first batch of product in vacuum skin tray packaging to Hong Kong following a successful trial. |
The product, including cutlets, saddle chops and chump steaks, will be jointly marketed under Alliance Group’s Pure South and the Angliss Hong Kong brands and sold in supermarkets, including those owned by the Aeon Stores Group.

Peter Russell, General Manager Marketing at Alliance Group, said the shipment is believed to be the first New Zealand red meat packed at origin to be supplied in skin packs in Hong Kong.

“This trial and shipment demonstrate the co-operative’s commitment to investing in providing a more sophisticated offering for our customers and capturing more value for farmer shareholders," said Mr. Russell. “Skin packaging is a good way to display smaller consumer-ready portions. Because of the materials used, skin packaging gives flexibility to package small consumer-ready products across a range of cuts, including chilled, frozen, bone-in and boneless – compared to less flexible vacuum packaging which is used for larger primal cuts to export wholesale markets.”

Mr. Russell added that the company has been working on skin pack technology for the last couple of years, while last year it discussed marketing opportunities with Angliss in Hong Kong.

“The co-operative ran a trial shipment last year with Angliss and their customers were pleased with how they presented. They placed a larger order, so we are looking forward to hearing what the response is from the market."

Alliance Group's official said that the company is undertaking significant product development programmes and has a number of other innovations in the pipeline.
| 1 | Retail | 2018-04-20 13:07:36 | 2025-08-06 16:24:09 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1142 | Mexico is pushing its meat exports to Asia through Singapore | China, South Korea, Vietnam and Indonesia are the markets targeted by both sides in a coordinated strategy to expand agro-food trade in Asia. |
Mexico wants to make an entrance on some important Asian markets through Singapore and a coordinated strategy agreed between both parts is now developed, reports Mexican Beef portal.
A working meeting to strengthen the agri-food trade relationship in the Asian region was held this week at the Secretariat of Agriculture, Livestock, Rural Development, Fisheries and Food(SAGARPA) headquarters between the General Coordinator of International Affairs of SAGARPA, Raul Urteaga Trani, and Ambassador Jennie Chua.
In the first phase, 14 Mexican agribusinesses (beef and pork, avocado, chia, banana, octopus, shrimp, tuna and sauces) will be present at the Expo Food & Hotel Show Asia in Singapore, from April 21 to 27.
The trade mission also plans to participate in business tables in Vietnam, which allows progress in the actions that lead to the signing of the Comprehensive and Progressive Treaty of Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) that will grant preferential access to Mexican products in said markets, confirmed Raul Urteaga.

In fact, the possibility of Mexican meat to access new markets in Asia or in Europe is a topic present on the agenda of the 2018 World Meat Congress (WMC) hosted in Dallas, Texas between May 31- June 01 by hosted by the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and the International Meat Secretariat.

"Mexico’s cattle and hog sectors have attracted significant investment, but what are the prospects for production growth and related implications for global trade? Does this include diversification of Mexico’s red meat exports and imports beyond the United States?", is the question launched by the USMEF representatives.

"With NAFTA negotiations reaching a critical phase and the United States, Mexico and the European Union engaged in a wide range of trade talks, this session will truly offer a view from the front lines of negotiations that will shape global trade for years to come", believes Phillip Seng, former president and CEO of USMEF.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-20 14:21:28 | 2025-08-06 12:54:13 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1143 | Egypt plans to invest in a processing facility in Kano, Nigeria | A delegation of investors has already visited the area in order to explore the viability of establishing a meat processing firm. |
The local government of state Kano in Northern Nigeria announced a partnership with a group of Egyptian investors interested in establishing a meat processing firm in the area.
The news came out during the visit at the Government House in Kano. "Your coming at this hour is very significant and fruitful. According to a US Department of Agriculture forecast, this year, beef consumption in Egypt is expected to reach 645,000 MT, up by 35,000 MT or 6 percent compared to 2017 and the calf crop production in 2018 to increase to 1.93 million head, up 4 percent from 1.85 million head in 2017. Nevertheless, Egypt remains a cattle importer with a number of 250.000 head per year and an investment in a processing plant in Nigeria could bring some benefits for the domestic market.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-20 15:14:01 | 2025-08-06 14:24:31 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1151 | HCC it targeting Asia and North-America's markets | Lamb and beef from Wales will be showcased on two major events in Singapore and Canada. |
Welsh producers of beef and lamb need new markets outside Europe to alleviate the impact of Brexit that will be felt in less than a year.
Asia and North America are targeted by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) as potential new markets for the PGI Welsh Lamb and PGI Welsh Beef and the red meat levy board will join with processing companies to showcase these products in two major events in the following weeks, Food and Hotel Asia in Singapore on 24-27 April, and SIAL Montreal in Canada on 2-4 May.
A third of Welsh Lamb is exported; of those exports, the EU is the destination of over 90% of the lamb and beef going from Wales overseas. Volumes of meat sold in newer markets such as Canada and Asia are currently small, but HCC is targeting these countries given the uncertainty over future European trade access after Brexit.

“Given the uncertainty over markets and tariffs at the moment, we have to focus on several objectives at once. We must maintain links with our vital European customers, as well as developing markets further afield, and redoubling our efforts in the UK.”, explained HCC Market Development Manager Rhys Llywelyn.
The presence at the two trade shows as well as other events and activities over the next year is funded by GBP 2 million funds of AHDB red meat levies ring-fenced for collaborative projects and managed by the three GB meat levy bodies – AHDB, HCC and Quality Meat Scotland (QMS). In addition, the Welsh government is supporting other activities in promoting exports in the Middle East, Asian and North American markets in a programme worth GBP 1.5 million over three years.
Also, HCC will benefit from EU's financial support in opening trade talks with China that could secure market access for UK meat products in the near future.

| 1 | Market | 2018-04-23 10:31:13 | 2025-08-06 10:32:20 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1152 | Smart packaging is here! See how is changing the retail | A team of scientist from Wageningen University is conducting different studies on intelligent packages for food in order to tackle food waste. |

Packaging is getting closer to the era of smart revolutionary methods to ensure the consumer about the quality of the product delivered. Intelligent packaging and dynamic shelf pricing for food are some of the solutions identified by scientists as methods to tackle food waste.
A research team from Wageningen University is testing several prototypes of packages to find out what works best in preserving the food for a longer time without altering some of its characteristics required by the consumers, such as freshness, taste, preservative-free.
Smart packaging is the way of the future believes Dr Jenneke Heising and there are several methods that can be seen as smart in the packaging industry, as she explained. "Active packaging protects food by reducing negative factors. For example, oxygen in the air affects the quality of many products. You can embed oxygen scavengers into the packaging material. These scavengers ensure the oxygen level inside the package drops so that very little oxygen (or even none at all) reacts with the product, extending its shelf life.", said Dr Heising, according to a Rabobank article.
The package can also include antimicrobial materials and components to curb bacterial growth and therefore to reduce the use of preservatives in food products. Another method consists in creating a smart package that can indicate the quality of a product by showing the temperatures that it has been exposed. "You can gauge the conditions that strongly influence the quality of a product, like a temperature. With some products, you can predict the shelf life by measuring the temperature history with a so-called TTI time-temperature indicator. This indicates temperature exposure over a certain period of time", added the scientist. In this way, a retailer can make better logistical decisions at various levels of the supply chain in order to prevent food waste. There is also a new strategy recommended in retail that refers to dynamic pricing as a way of convincing supermarket consumers to buy products with a shorter shelf life for a lower price, further reducing food waste.

| 1 | Retail | 2018-04-23 12:06:34 | 2025-08-06 11:02:03 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1153 | VIDEO - "Meat consumption in Spain and in Europe is not to grow for years" |
Alimentaria 2018 was a good opportunity for Spanish meat producers to show their capacities and even small and medium businesses had their place on the show thanks to the Federación Empresarial de Carnes e Industrias Cárnicas (FECIC) presence on the exhibition.
On a stand measuring 1,200 square meters the members of FECIC, including even the small and medium businesses, had their own chance to exhibit their products during the Alimentaria 2018 trade fair. "It's a good opportunity for our companies to show what the sector is doing nowadays for the animal welfare, for the quality and the standards and to show that they are working very hard to be more and more competitive. We believe that Spain is in a good position and we can go further and prove to be better in the near future", declared Pol Moragas Parrado, Deputy Head of FECIC, in an interview for EuroMeatNews.
Meat exports are growing for a few years now and the trend has stabilized looking pretty encouraging for the business in the sector but there are challenges represented by the consumption on the domestic market or inside EU's market where things are not evolving at the same pace, admitted Pol Moragas Parrado. "The consumption in Spain or in Europe is not growing nowadays and we think is not going to grow for the next few years. But we choose to focus on the international markets and we intend to increase this competitiveness between Spain and other countries", added the Deputy Head of FECIC. Spanish pork industry has grown very well in the last few years, with China being one the important markets, but FECIC is targeting also other Asian countries, such as Taiwan or Philippines in the next two years.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-23 13:47:35 | 2025-08-06 13:15:43 | Details Edit Delete | |||
1154 | A Finnish meat producer will export 3 million kilos of pork to China | Finland-based HKScan has shipped its first batch of 25,000 kilos of pork to China from its Forssa production unit, according to the company's press release. |
Jukka Nikkinen, head of HKScan exports, said in a statement that the pork requirements in China are among the world's strictest and that the company's key strengths in the Chinese market are "great flavor and the world-class expertise of Finnish family farms."

"The Chinese utilize all parts of the carcass in their cuisine. Our customers are interested in carcass parts that might seem exotic from a European perspective, such as meaty bones and feet, which are highly valued and important raw ingredients in Chinese cuisine. These cuts are also included in the first shipment," Mr. Nikkinen added.

The company plans for this year to export almost 3 million kilos of pork to China and to subsequently triple that volume by 2020.

"Relative to the volume of pork currently produced annually in Finland, this would mean that at least 5% of all Finnish-reared pigs would end up on Chinese dining tables through HKScan," the company's statement read.

HKScan announced that it will mark its presence on the Asian market not only with products that are traditionally sold here but also with premium-grade value-added products generally marketed only in the Nordic region, such as sirloin and tenderloin cuts. HKScan's Omega-3 pork is the company's flagship innovation in the premium category.

"Finland's politicians and authorities have done an excellent job at supporting Finnish food exports. On behalf of HKScan, I would like to extend a warm word of thanks to the Finnish Ministry of Agriculture and Forestry, the Finnish Food Safety Authority and to all other authorities in Finland and China, without forgetting the excellent input of our partners in China and own personnel. Our Chinese partners have helped us gain valuable insights into the minds and hearts of Chinese consumers and customers," says CEO Latvanen.

The Chinese food authorities granted an export permit to HKScan's Forssa plant, which is ISO 9001, 14001 and FSSC 22 000 certified. The unit already had export licenses for other markets including the USA and Russia.

The Finish company exports meat to almost 50 countries, including countries from EU as well as New Zealand and Japan, and it supplies its meat from 3,400 pig, beef, and poultry contract farmers.

HKScan produces its premium products known as Rypsiporsas in Finland and as Rapsgris in Sweden and are based on Omega-3 pork pigs which are fed on domestic grain and rapeseed grown exclusively on local farms in Finland and Sweden.

The company added that all protein sources in the animal feed – rapeseed, peas and broad beans – are also 100% domestically grown. No soy meal is required as an additional protein source. The piglets' diet is carefully monitored, as is the composition of their feed, their consumption, and their growth rates.

HKScan's Omega-3 pork in Finland is sourced from carefully selected Finnish farms. According to the company, this type of meat is softer-textured and healthier in fat composition, as unsaturated fatty acids predominate over saturated fats, which also makes the meat tastier and tenderer than regular pork.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-23 13:38:02 | 2025-08-06 05:02:53 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1156 | Indonesia's online sales of beef to boost Aussie livestock trade | As the e-commerce for beef is getting stronger in Indonesia the country needs to import more live cattle from Australia. |
With a population of 260 million, Indonesia is depending on Australian cattle to cope with domestic demand for beef. Nevertheless, the livestock trade is to intensify as the online sales of beef is getting stronger thanks to an e-commerce platform specialized in selling food to the hotels, restaurants, catering businesses and consumers, reports abc.net.au.
Sikumis.com is using the Australian beef to promote e-commerce on food but also is eyeing the livestock imports to diversify its offer.
"We still want cattle to come live to Indonesia and be fed and processed locally. Then our big customers consisting of hotels, restaurants and catering businesses will buy live cattle selected from the website, which will then be tailor cut in our partner's slaughterhouse.", explained Edward S Siagian, the founder of Sikumis.com.
Indonesia is the largest market for Australian livestock exports, reaching up to 700,000 head in record years, but during the last two years, the demand decreased due to the higher prices for live animals and from the introduction of cheaper products like frozen buffalo meat from India.
According to the data presented by Sikumis' founder the total value of beef consumption in Indonesia is about 5.5 billion Australian dollars ($4.2 billion).
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-24 07:01:50 | 2025-08-05 23:39:53 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1157 |
As the global meat trade crosses a turbulent period, is time for the third largest pork exporter in the world to be bold in approaching the Chinese market.

Interporc Spain is prepared to set a clear footprint on the Chinese market, as Daniel de Miquel, International Manager of the association, told EuroMeatNews in an interview taken in Barcelona at the Alimentaria 2018.

“We will be there! We will accompany the main pork exporters to China. Last year we reached around 2 million tons of pork exports on global markets. It’s one of our challenges, at this time, to increase and to improve our position in those third markets. 2018 can be a good year for the pork producer in Spain but e will have to very strong. We have to fight against our main competitors and we have to defend our EU model of production that we think it has differential value in terms of animal welfare and traceability ”, said de Miquel.

The Spanish market may not look so promising for the pork producers in the country but the exports are doing quite well for now and there are some elements that can justify this evolution.

“The production in Spain is growing because we are able to provide a sustainable model of production, we have a rigorous system of traceability and there is a huge demand from the third countries.
