7985 Sheep producer sentiment rebounds with improved seasonal outlook and commodity prices Australian sheep producers’ confidence has jumped substantially this quarter, riding on the back of improved prices, informs Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA).
According to the latest Sheep Producer Intentions Survey (SPIS) released by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI), sheep producers are buoyed by better prices for lamb and mutton and improving seasonal conditions in some states.

Producer net sentiment for the sheepmeat sector has lifted from -42 points in October 2023, to +42 points in October 2024.

All states other than Western Australia reported a positive outlook for the sheepmeat sector, with New South Wales (+55), Victoria (+52) and Queensland (+41) reporting the highest numbers.

Western Australian producers, who face a series of challenges including the cessation of live sheep exports, tough market conditions and dry season conditions, reported a sentiment figure of -2 points, although this is a 69-point increase compared to the 2023 figure.

While challenges remain for WA producers, support is being provided through the Australian Government’s recent assistance package. The $3 million allocated to MLA will fund initiatives such as extending the successful ‘Lambassador’ program and developing digital education tools, aimed at promoting Australian sheepmeat and creating new market opportunities.

According to Senior Market Analyst at MLA, Erin Lukey, this edition of the SPIS had the largest response rate ever, collecting 2,579 producer responses, representing 10% of sheep producers across the country.

"This gives us a strong indicator on the state of the industry and describes producers’ intentions for the year ahead", Ms Lukey said.

"This edition of the survey focuses on lambing intentions and whether producers plan to grow, maintain or reduce their flock sizes.

"Nearly equal proportions of producers are intending to increase (40%) or decrease their flock (39%). This has shifted from last year’s survey, when more producers were looking to decrease their flock.

"The reasons why depend on which state you live in. Western Australian and South Australian producers, who have had drier weather than the eastern states, were more likely to want to reduce their flocks at 51% and 49% respectfully.

"47% of NSW producers indicated a desire to grow their flocks, with the most common reason being an expectation of higher lamb prices in 2025".

Analysis of the forecast change in the number of lambs suggests an expected reduction of approximately 250,000 lambs of the estimated 2024 flock size (equating to a forecast decrease of 1% on 2024).

"This result highlights the importance of considering the reported changes in flock size rather than just producers’ disposition to change. Differing conditions across states will impact regional flock sizes, but also the intentions of different sized enterprises. Growth in the NSW flock has combatted the climate driven decrease across other states, resulting in a level national flock", Ms Lukey said.

This survey has also revealed changes in the lamb flock profile with prime lambs (38%) remaining above Merinos (35%) within the 27-million-strong lambs on hand. Merinos fell from 37% to 35% over the past year and shedding lambs lifted from 5% to 8% of the flock.

"Reasons as to why include a struggle to access labour for shearing, rising input costs and poor wool prices", Ms Lukey said.

The Sheep Producer Intentions Survey was designed by MLA and AWI to support the industry with reliable data and is used by MLA and the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS). It is one of the inputs into the MLA sheepmeat industry forecasting models.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-12-05 00:10:27 2025-08-11 06:32:36 Details Edit Delete
6696 Australia: Red meat industry vital to job creation and economy, according to consumers Australians are eager to learn more about the beef and lamb industries and this thirst for knowledge often translates into positive perceptions of the industry, according to Meat & Livestock Australia’s (MLA) latest consumer sentiment research.
Conducted annually since 2010 by Pollinate on behalf of MLA, the research measures and tracks consumer sentiment towards the Australian red meat industry.

The research is used to inform MLA’s engagement with consumers and the community, including MLA’s myriad of programs that build trust and communicate the immense value of the industry.

MLA Managing Director Jason Strong said this year’s consumer insights indicate that higher levels of industry knowledge were linked to better perceptions of the industry.

"A key takeaway from the research is that the more consumers learn about the industry, the better their perceptions become", Mr Strong said. “It goes to the heart of the very positive story our industry can tell around environmental sustainability, human nutrition, and animal welfare.

"We are proud that when consumer have a look under the bonnet, they are proud of the industry and its immense contribution to society. Trust in the industry increased to 66% from 60% last year, indicating that the more you know, the more you appreciate and understand the industry.

"Consumers appreciate the opportunity to analyse the nutritional aspects of red meat, understand its production methods, and sustainability efforts. When they do, this leads to a more positive view of the industry's contributions to the Australian economy and job creation".

Most Australians (77%) see the industry as an important part of the Australian economy, while 72% consider red meat production as a key employer in regional areas.

The research revealed that a greater knowledge of the industry is associated with a greater likelihood of red meat consumption. It found 26% of consumers who feel knowledgeable about the beef and lamb industry are more likely to consume red meat compared to a year ago. While 15% of all other Australians indicate that they are more likely to eat red meat compared to this time last year.

Mr Strong noted that while nearly 1 in 3 (28%) of Australians think they have knowledge of the industry, 53% also want to learn more about red meat production.

"This is because red meat production is intertwined with various aspects of Australian life, including the economy, culture, health, and environment", he said.

"There’s also a strong desire to see kids learn about the industry in Australian schools, with 71% agreeing with this statement".

Of the Australians who are looking to increase red meat consumption, 88% are driven by health and nutrition. Breaking this down further, these reasons included accessing a source of iron, protein, nutrition and to generally improve their health.

Only 5% of Australians identify as vegetarians, which is the lowest figure recorded to date. In addition, over half (55%) of claimed vegetarians eat fish or meat occasionally, so only 2% of the population are what is considered "true" vegetarians or vegans.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-08-27 00:05:52 2025-08-10 18:13:56 Details Edit Delete

4022 MLA works on a new packaging concept for the red meat industry Australians worked with an American start-up company, Corumat, to develop patented technology using food and meat waste to make a plastic-free, compostable meat tray.
Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA) is taking a new approach in the war against food waste and wants to embrace a new packaging concept for the red meat industry. MLA worked with an American start-up company, Corumat, to develop patented technology using food and meat waste to make a plastic-free, compostable meat tray. This project takes a ‘circular economy’ approach to upcycle resources (in this case, food waste) to extract value rather than discarding them. "Upcycling waste streams could potentially re-position our True Aussie Beef and Lamb to be clean, green and plastic-free,” MLA’s Group Manager – Science and Innovation Michael Lee said.

“This complete value-chain story of sustainability provides Australian red meat with a significant competitive advantage in the global protein market. Brand owners, producers and consumers are all set to benefit,” he added.

The Corumat meat tray is also approximately 20% cheaper than plastic meat trays. It’s still under development but shows promising signs of market adoption. MLA is currently working with Australian red meat brand owners to identify opportunities to use this technology. Currently, one-third of all food produced globally is thrown away every year across the value chain. Extending extend shelf life and going for plastic-free trays is a goal for the global meat industry.
    Industry 2020-08-11 08:40:22 2025-08-11 05:20:29 Details Edit Delete
3544 ASF, now 12 km away from Germany Authorities are foreseeing a disaster in spring when wild boars herds are expected to move.
A carcass of a wild boar infected with African swine fever virus was found in Poland 12 kilometers away from the German border, informs Agrarheute magazine. The situation has put German authorities on alert, as the disease seems to move faster than expected. In a 2018 prediction made by Polish researchers, the risk of a virus entering Germany through wild boar population was estimated at 4-5 years. Nevertheless, the hunting parties organized last year seem to have pushed the animals out of their area to the western regions of Poland.
A spokesman for the Ministry of Agriculture declared for the German Press Agency (DPA) that the set of biosecurity measures adopted in the last few weeks remains the same. Germany has installed protective fences along the border and hunters were advised to shoot the wild boars coming from the neighbouring country.
According to Eurostat data, in November, the national swine inventory in Germany was around 26 million head.
    Industry 2020-01-22 11:02:11 2025-08-11 05:43:01 Details Edit Delete
3230 China is cutting transportation tariffs on pork to ease prices Authorities are planning to give up on the toll for lorries that transport pigs or pork around the country in an effort to improve the overall supply of meat, as prices are going through the ceiling.
The Chinese authorities are trying to avoid a spike in pork prices by giving up on taxes for trucks that transport pigs or pork meat around the country. With pork supplies declining fast in some regions, authorities have also planned to release reserves of frozen meat to cover the gap in the market.
“For vehicles that legally transport breeding pigs and frozen pork, tolls are exempted to further protect pork supply,” announced China’s ministry of transport at the beginning of the week, according to AgriCensus.
The so-called toll-free “green path” for authorized vehicles carrying pigs and pork came into effect over the weekend and will be valid until the end of June 2020. Despite the fact that China's pork imports have grown in the last couple of months, pork prices are hitting new records in this market. Last week, prices have jumped by almost 9% reaching the level of $4.82/kilo. A week before that, pork prices have been at $4.42/kilo.
China holds the world's largest pig herd but the ASF outbreaks have reduced the national pig inventory by 33% in almost a year and analysts are predicting a total decline of 50% by the end of the year.
    Industry 2019-09-04 07:43:07 2025-08-10 06:16:35 Details Edit Delete
3038 China suspends 188 Canadian health certificates Authorities claim that traces of ractopamine were found in the pig meat imported from Canada.
188 health certificates issued by China to Canadian pork producers were suspended after Beijing authorities discovered that were forged. In a statement, the Chinese embassy in Ottawa announced that residues of ractopamine were found in some batches of pig meat imported from Canada. "Recently, the Chinese Customs authorities have inspected ractopamine residues in a batch of pork products exported from Canada to China. Therefore, the Chinese side has immediately suspended the import of pork products from the relevant enterprises and required the Canadian side to carry out an investigation. The subsequent investigation revealed that the official veterinary health certificates attached to the batch of pork exported to China were counterfeit and the number of those forgery certificates was up to 188", said the statement.

The Chinese side mentioned that, at this moment, the Canadian meat export supervision system may present serious safety loopholes and asked for effective measures to be taken to ensure the safety of food exported to China.

"These forged certificates were sent to the Chinese regulatory authorities through the Canadian official certificate notification channel, which reflects that the Canadian meat export supervision system exists obvious safety loopholes. In order to protect the safety of Chinese consumers, China has taken urgent preventive measures and requested the Canadian government to suspend the issuance of certificates for meat exported to China since June 25.

We hope the Canadian side would attach great importance to this incident, complete the investigation as soon as possible and take effective measures to ensure the safety of food exported to China in a more responsible manner", added the embassy.

On the other hand, tensions between the two countries have emerged after the arrest of Huawei executive Meng Wanzhou in Vancouver. Ms. Meng is the Chinese firm's chief financial officer and its founder's daughter. She is accused of breaking US sanctions on Iran and faces extradition to the US.
Two months ago, representatives of the pork industry in Canada were hoping to increase their presence in the Chinese market due to the African Swine Fever situation in the country. "China, again, is going through some challenges right now with African Swine Fever so they will be relying heavily on their import pork partners for supply and Canada is one of those suppliers so we are looking for our volume to grow in China.
Other good news for us is that we’ve started pilot projects with some Chinese end-user customers for chilled pork which is quite exciting for our industry. We’ve always done well in the frozen sector but this opens up a new category of trade us which we think will build over time and we’ll be working with our Chinese end-user partners to fully optimize that opportunity for Canada," declared in April Michael Young, Vice-President Technical Services and Marketing Programs with Canada Pork International.
In the last 10 years, China was the second export market for Canadian pork, right after the US. 2018 was the second highest year in terms of volume for Canadian pork exports, with 1.2 million tonnes shipped worldwide, registering an increase of 15% compared with figures reported in 2008.
    Industry 2019-06-27 06:08:25 2025-08-11 02:58:26 Details Edit Delete

4786 Denmark throws away 814,000 tonnes of food per year Authorities have made a comprehensive survey of food waste in the entire value chain in the country.
From now on, it is possible for the first time to see a detailed overview of which industries generate the most food waste, according to a press release from the Danish Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries. In total, Denmark throws away 814,00 tonnes of food per year but never before have been made a comprehensive survey of food waste in the entire value chain.
The report from the Danish Environmental Protection Agency divides food waste into five categories; primary production, food industry, retail and wholesale, restaurants, and households. However, the inventory for households has not been updated, it is expected to be examined in 2022.
"Food waste makes no sense. And not at all a waste of food in an industry where you make a living from producing and selling food. But we also know that insight into quantities and numbers has a positive effect. It shows international experience. So I hope that not only the food industries, but the whole of Denmark, will follow the figures with interest," says Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries Rasmus Prehn.
The food industry accounts for the largest part, 385,000 tons of food waste annually. In that category, dairies generate the largest share, 218,000 tonnes. And the category "other food industry" for 156,000 tons annually. This includes, for example, food sorting due to size, shape and form.

"We have a special position in Denmark because there is generally openness about food waste and a great willingness on the part of the business community to make a difference and share experiences. We do not see that openness in many other countries, and therefore I hope that we can use the concrete figures to mark ourselves even stronger," says Rasmus Prehn.
"It is good that we now have a clear picture of the challenge we have with food waste in Denmark. It is an important prerequisite for targeted action when we as a government have a clear ambition for less food waste in all parts of the value chain. Less food waste is good for both the climate and the environment and in the coming time we in the EU will work for concrete reduction targets for food waste," completed Minister of the Environment Lea Wermelin.
In 2020, the Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries launched the annual Food Waste Day on 29 September, just as the think tank One \ Third has a voluntary agreement "Denmark against Food Waste", where the food industry can get free help measuring and reducing food waste. In addition, Denmark has just been given the task of preparing an international ISO standard for measuring food waste.
    Industry 2021-07-02 07:43:39 2025-08-11 00:54:05 Details Edit Delete
