1983 | Polish official asks for wild boar depopulation | Is a prerequisite in the fight against ASF, says Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski. |
Isolate the farms and depopulate the wild boar herds to a level that is safe, recommends the Polish Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Jan Krzysztof Ardanowski.
Poland is fighting against ASF since 2014 and the number of outbreaks is increasing to lately, despite the efforts made to contain the virus.
500 veterinary and action inspectors are missing in the field and the number of outbreaks reported this year has already reached 108, more than half all 212 detected in four years since the disease was first detected in the country.
Now the minister insists that only a depopulation of wild boar herds will give the authorities a chance to intervene to stop the spreading of the virus and he is appealing to hunters to engage more in this "war against illness", reports Portal Spozywczy magazine.
In his opinion, although the National Hunting Party and the Hunting District of the Polish Hunting Association understand the seriousness of the situation, shooting in individual hunting grounds is carried out in a "sluggish and absolutely inadequate" manner.
"The state once gave the Polish Hunting Union great privileges. It was the exclusive right to hunt animals, the right to use farmer fields, not only in the sense of organizing hunting and walking in private property but also hunting for game that feeds on these fields.
Since the state gave privileges, in the situation of the war we have at the moment, because it is a war with illness, also hunters have duties and they must understand this", said the minister.
According to the data presented by minister Ardanowski, the growth rate in the wild boar population is at 300%. "The destruction of wild boars is a condition for not keeping the disease in nature", asked the minister, mentioning that the depopulation will not threaten the existence of this species.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-01 12:08:49 | 2025-08-05 07:37:10 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1986 | Brazil's cattle herd declined by 1.5% | The world's second largest herd didn't show any sign of expansion, despite the record-high grain crop in 2017. |
Last year, Brazil had the perfect weather conditions to reach a record-high grain crop but that didn't translate in a cattle herd expansion. Data collected from the Municipal Livestock Production and the Brazilian Institute for Geography and Statistics shows that the national cattle inventory has declined in 2017 compared with the previous year.
At the end of the year, there were 214.9 million cattle in the country, which stands for a 1.5% decline of the herd, informs Salaam Gateway magazine.
At the same time, Brazilian meat industry seemed to push forward the poultry sector who registered an increase of 6% compared with the figures reported in 2016, reaching a number of 1.4 billion birds, layer hens and broilers alike. The phenomenon generated a diminished value for the animal-based foods and production of 0.4% compared to 2016.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-02 06:28:20 | 2025-08-05 18:04:48 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1990 | Sea Sheperd is making the offer hoping that the funds could stop the hunting of the whales. |
One million euros payable in ten tranches, between 2020 and 2030, is the offer submitted by Sea Sheperd UK to the Faroe Islands to stop its whaling activities, locally called the grindadrap.
Almost 8,000 cetaceans from five different species have been killed in the last decade by the Faroese fishermen in their grindadrap hunts, informs Maritime Executive.
The one million Euros will be payable over 10 instalments at the end of every calendar year for 10 years with the first instalment of 100,000 Euros on January 1, 2020. Each payment will only be made if no cetaceans are deliberately hunted and killed in the Faroe Islands throughout the preceding 12 months.
In exchange, the British NGO is asking that the funds should be spent on promoting eco-friendly tourism to the Faroe Islands; Establishing cooperative whale/dolphin watching businesses in small communities around the Faroe Islands; Provision of teaching materials or specialist lectures to Faroese children on marine conservation; Training to Faroese citizens in marine mammal rescue techniques so that stranded cetaceans can be saved whenever possible.
The offer was submitted directly to the Faroese govern but it is expected to meet a strong opposition from the whale hunters. Despite the fact that grindadrap is seen a brutal way to kill the whales, the Faroese Pilot Whaler’s Association has argued that the killing method is actually humane. "It is every hunter's duty, honour and pride to kill an animal as quickly and humanely as possible", specified in the past Hans J. Hermansen, ex-president and board member for 22 years for the Faroese Pilot Whaler’s Association.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-02 16:09:33 | 2025-08-06 01:29:30 | Details Edit Delete | |||
1991 | Pork production in the US to grow by 3% over the next 6 months | Over the next half year, there will be 75,000 more hogs a week to go for the market, explains expert. |
The US hog inventory has increased to 69,156,000, up by 2 million compared to the last year and that means a lot of meat to be delivered on the market in the next few months.
In fact, about 75,000 more hogs a week will enter the slaughterhouses and processing units in the next six months, according to a market report from Jim Long, President-CEO, Genesus Inc.
Luckily, there is some good news for the industry as the US has finally reached an agreement on trade issues with Mexico and pork demand from China is expected to increase in the near future as the Asian country is fighting against ASF outbreaks.
"In our opinion, it will be hard for China to stop ASF. They will try but we have been in Russia for ten years, we have seen ASF there. We know Russia has tried to stop it and have made an excellent effort but so far have not been successful. Russia has land and strict biosecurity systems and protocols. The sheer scale of Chinas industry and hog density makes the effort even more daunting.
Finally, with the announcement on Sunday of the Trade agreement between the USA – Mexico – Canada (USMCA) there should be relief in the future for U.S. producers at some point from Mexican tariffs that have hurt U.S. hog prices", observes Mr Long.
Nevertheless, the US pig herd expansion seems to have slowed down in the last quarter, the country's breeding herd expansion accounting for only 10,000 head.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-02 16:40:13 | 2025-08-06 06:51:35 | Details Edit Delete | ||

1995 | Czech Republic to inspect pork products from countries with ASF | The Czech Republic's State Veterinary Administration (JSB) has announced that all shipments of pork and heat-treated unprocessed products from countries that are not African swine fever (ASF) free will be tested for the presence of the virus before being placed on the Czech market. |
The authorities announced that this regulation will be applied to all the national food companies' operators that import products from Belgium, Bulgaria, Estonia, Lithuania, Latvia, Hungary, Poland or Romania.

"In view of the development of the disease situation in Europe, it is necessary to protect domestic pigs and the high-standard market for consumers from the possible introduction of the disease. That's why we have decided to condition the entry of potentially dangerous food from risky countries by mandatory ASF testing. The fight against the disease costs us a lot of money and there are a number of restrictive measures, so we do not want to risk another introduction of the disease into our territory," Minister of Agriculture Miroslav Toman stated.

The JSB is currently randomly examining consignments of pigs and wild feathered pigs from ASF-compliant pigs for the presence of their virus. Over 100 samples were collected this year. In either case, the presence of ASF was not detected. The new veterinary measures of the JSB will also intensify monitoring intensively and will investigate pork meat and products from countries where the presence of ASF has not officially been confirmed.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-03 10:30:46 | 2025-08-05 06:38:26 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1996 | China culls 30,000 birds due to bird flu outbreak | A case of H5N6 avian bird flu was reported on a farm from Guizhou province. |
32,352 birds were culled by Chinese authorities after an outbreak of H5N6 was reported in a poultry farm in southwestern Guizhou province, mentioned Reuters.
According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs, this is the first case of H5N6 reported in the area in the last couple of years.
Nevertheless, China is confronted with similar problems discovered in ducks, who now carry a deadly strain of bird flu. Highly pathogenic versions of H7N9 — a bird flu strain that’s proven particularly deadly to people — and H7N2 viruses have turned up in ducks in the Fujian province. These viruses replicate easily in the ducks and can kill them, researchers report September 27. The discovery is worrisome because the virus made the jump to ducks just ahead of efforts to eliminate H7N9 by vaccinating chickens, reports Science News magazine.

Since H7N9 began sickening people in 2013, a total of 1,625 people have contracted the bird flu strain and 623 have died. Most of those infected had been in contact with chickens. Initially, the virus killed about a third of people who caught it. But in 2016, the virus mutated to become even deadlier in both poultry and people, killing about half of the people it infected.

A vaccine against the virus protects chickens, and consequently people, the new study found. No human cases of H7N9 have been reported since October 2017. But ducks weren’t vaccinated because the original H7N9 virus didn’t infect them easily. Now, the Chinese authorities are trying to prevent the deadlier virus strains from spreading to other poultry, wild birds and to people.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-03 10:46:45 | 2025-08-06 05:50:49 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1998 | UPA urges the Spanish government to adopt stricter measures against ASF | Five restrictionary measures are asked by the Union of Small Farmers in order to keep the disease out of the country. |
The Spanish Union of Small Farmers (UPA) are asking the government to take immediate measures in order to prevent the spreading of the ASF virus in the country.
As rumours about new cases reported in Italy have appeared, the agrarian organization has asked the Ministry of Agriculture to take five measures against swine fever, starting by banning the entry of wild boars in Spain. "It is unheard of animals being imported when, precisely, the last outbreaks of this disease have been detected in these animals that, paradoxically, are growing in numbers uncontrollably until they become a pest in many rural areas of Spain", complains UPA through the voice of its Livestock secretary, Roman Santalla.
Other four measures are seen as necessary to be adopted urgent, as mentioned in the letter sent to the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food, Fernando Miranda.
One of those, the control of piglets imports, has already been applied in Catalonia and UPA believes that it should be extended through all the provinces of Spain. The organization has also requested that all biosafety measures be extended to vehicles involved in the transport of animals, "as it is known that it is one of the most frequent routes for the spread of diseases in livestock", they have assured from UPA.

Fourth, the farmers have proposed that the Ministry create a Coordination Table with the Autonomous Communities and the entire sector. "The goal has to be to point out and share all the news and actions related to African swine fever," said Santalla.

Finally, UPA proposes that the breeders should maximize each and every one of the measures of biosecurity in the farms, in order to avoid a possible external contagion.

African swine fever (ASF) is a hemorrhagic viral disease, highly contagious and lethal for pigs with mortality rates of almost 100% of affected specimens, although it must be remembered that it is totally harmless for humans. Recently it has begun to expand alarmingly across the continent, with the latest cases (unconfirmed yet) appearing in Italy. Spain has been confronted with ASF outbreaks almost 30 years ago and the losses for the sector were significant.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-04 07:02:29 | 2025-08-04 09:22:40 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2000 | Almost 3,000 mt of raw beef products recalled over possible salmonella contamination | JBS Tolleson, a Tolleson, Ariz. establishment, is recalling approximately 6,500,966 pounds (2,948 metric tons) of various raw, non-intact beef products that may be contaminated with Salmonella Newport. |
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) has announced that it was notified of an investigation of Salmonella Newport illnesses with reported consumption of several different FSIS-regulated products by case-patients.

"The first store receipt potentially linking the purchase of FSIS-regulated product to a case-patient was received on September 19, 2018; FSIS was then able to begin traceback of ground beef products. 2002 | Indian shrimp producer targets the European market | Blue Sea Aquaculture's black tiger shrimp exports are directed mainly to Germany, Austria and Switzerland. |
Blue Sea Aquaculture intends to grow its exposure on the EU market as organic black tiger shrimp items has already seen an increased demand from Austria, Germany and Switzerland.
Luckily, the EU ambassador to India just announced that the market will remain open for Indian shrimp exports due to the use of antibiotics in Indian shrimps, reports Undercurrent News magazine.
"We are not going to put any ban on Indian shrimp. Only one thing is that we have some health regulations in Europe and all imports from abroad should meet our requirement," said Tomasz Kozlowski, the EU ambassador to India.
That offers a big opportunity for Indian shrimp producers that respond to the EU's requirements to enter and compete in this market and Blue Sea Aquaculture admits that Europe is the main destination for its products at this time.
"The EU market is the main market. Sales of organic shrimp to the United States are difficult due to the lack of a recognized organic aquaculture regulation," said Udo Censkowsky, co-founder of the company.
In 2016, the first production reached 50 tonnes of black tiger shrimp but this year it could account for 200 tonnes of processed organic raw material. 2004 | US company recalls 40 tonnes of ham products for possible listeria contamination | Johnston County Hams, a Smithfield, N.C. establishment, is recalling approximately 89,096 pounds of ready-to-eat ham products that may be adulterated with Listeria monocytogenes. |
The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced the ready-to-eat deli-loaf ham items were produced from April 3, 2017 to Oct. 2, 2018. The products were shipped to distributors in Maryland, North Carolina, New York, South Carolina and Virginia.

On September 27, 2018, FSIS was notified that a person ill with listeriosis reported consuming a ham product produced at Johnston County Hams. Working in conjunction with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and state public health and agriculture partners, FSIS determined that there is a link between the Listeria monocytogenes illnesses and ham products produced at Johnston County Hams. The epidemiologic investigation identified a total of four listeriosis confirmed illnesses, including one death, between July 8, 2017 and August 11, 2018.

FSIS collected two deli ham product samples from the Johnston County Hams, Inc. facility in 2016 and in early 2018. Whole genome sequencing results showed that Listeria monocytogenes identified in deli ham both years was closely related genetically to Listeria monocytogenes from ill people.
