2723 Canada increased its beef exports to the EU by 113% Two-thirds of the volume has gone to the UK market and uncertainty over Brexit is causing a delay in bringing future Canada-UK trade parameters into focus.
The beef industry in Canada is showing strong growth in the EU market thanks to the CETA trade deal. Last year, beef exports to the EU market increased by 113% in terms of volume, reaching 1,059 tonnes, and by 98% in value ($15.5 million), according to Canada Cattlemen's Association (CCA).
At the same time, European beef exports to Canada in 2018 grew to 3,236 tonnes, up 12% in volume and 22% in value ($18.9 million) from 2017. The CCA attributes this growth to a combination of factors, but primarily to the increasing number of producers supplying more EU eligible cattle and a major packer developing the EU market. The association is expecting a steady growth of beef exports for this year and is currently looking to increase the number of auditors that can undertake the hormone free audits that are required for EU shipment.
Nevertheless, there is one disruptive factor that can impede the beef trade in the near future. "As nearly two-thirds of the 2018 volume and half the value has gone to the UK, much is riding on the access Canadian beef will have to an independent UK following Brexit. Unfortunately, uncertainty over Brexit is causing a delay in bringing future Canada-UK trade parameters into focus", claim CCA leaders. The UK is a net importer of beef and 6% of its beef imports are sourced in non-EU countries. The British government has announced a 7% tariff on beef imports from the EU in case of a no-deal Brexit but, for other suppliers, the duty can be set higher.
    Industry 2019-03-19 11:33:34 2025-07-25 14:03:50 Details Edit Delete

4949 Argentina's beef export crisis continues Meantime, Uruguay and Paraguay have consolidated their position in the global beef market.
The ban on beef exports, placed by the Argentinian government in May, is taking its toll on the industry's performance in international markets. For a country that stands as the world's fifth-largest beef exporter and a key supplier to China, losses are now in the range of $100 million per month and a decrease in exports has left room for other competitors to consolidate their market share internationally.
Over the last two months, Uruguay and Paraguay have increased their beef exports, surpassing Argentina, whose shipments are now 50% of what was before the ban. Data provided for July by the National Meat Institute of Uruguay (INAC) showed a volume of 37,939 tonnes shipped abroad, compared to 36,113 tonnes of bone-in meat from Argentina.
Meanwhile, the National Service for Animal Quality and Health of Paraguay (Senacsa) reported that in the first seven months of this year, beef exports reached 211,650 tonnes, in addition to 38.2 million kilos of giblets.
At the end of August, the Argentinian government announced an extension of the ban until the end of October. Exceptions are made for shipments to the European Union through the Hilton Quota, the 481 Quota and the 20,000 tons per year quota granted to the United States.
    Industry 2021-09-14 07:43:49 2025-07-25 06:04:21 Details Edit Delete

1088 Indonesia aims to become a second Vietnam for the pangasius global market The government banned the pangasius imports to increase the local production. The targeted volume for 2018 is at 600,000 tons.
The ban applied by Indonesia on pangasius imports had increased the domestic production in the last two years, as Nilanto Perbowo, Director General of Fishery Products Competitiveness Strengthening at the Ministry of Fisheries and Marine Affairs, mentioned to Asian Agribiz.
"This industry continues to show promising growth thanks to the import ban. This year, we target production to reach 604,587 tons", declared the official.
Since the imports have been eliminated pangasius production in Indonesia grew from 339,069 tonnes to 437,111 tonnes, between 2015-2016. Also, the local consumption increased by 21.9% from 2014 to 2017, according to the government data. 5283 UK pig backlog to last until summer, says AHDB Three scenarios are taken into consideration to describe the next steps for the British swine sector.
The backlog of pigs on farms would not be cleared until the second quarter of 2022, warns AHDB in a recent outlook for the sector. Pig farmers in the UK have been confronted with this problem since early autumn, due to the lack of workforce in abattoirs but the situation is to last or even get worst in the short time before it is cleared. AHDB outlook for the pork sector was based on assumptions that UK sow numbers would eventually fall from 415k head to 380k head by mid-year, and that UK slaughter capacity was constrained to around 220k head per week.
"But what if slaughter does not happen as laid out in the outlook? It is after all just one view of what we think is the most likely outcome, it is not the only possible outcome," AHDB warns.
Three scenarios have been presented for the current situation and, in each case, the situation is to last until the second quarter of 2022.

Scenarios:

1) The January outlook – GB slaughter of 186k head per week (approx. 220k for the UK). Based on the average weekly kill observed in Q4 2021, not including the last two (low) weeks.
2) Backlog high case – GB slaughter of 178k head per week. Based on the average GB kill observed between September and November.
3) Backlog low case – GB slaughter of 192k head per week. Based on GB weekly kill observed in the last 8 weeks of 2021 (again not including the final two (low) weeks).

"The following scenarios are based on varying the kill rate, in line with recently observed estimated slaughter. For simplicity, we have not varied the size in decline of the sow herd from that assumed in the outlook. This could further delay or bring forward changes in the size of the backlog. However, most of the pigs available for slaughter in the first half of 2022, including the backlog itself, were already on the ground as at 1 Dec 2021, the date of Defra’s most recent survey of the English pig population.
In the January outlook, we suggested the backlog could not be addressed until Q2. Here, in the “high case” scenario, the backlog worsens before it gets better, and is with us until July. In the “low case”, it is dealt with around seven weeks earlier than the “January outlook” case," commented Duncan Wyatt, Read Meat Lead Analyst, AHDB.
Currently, the UK government's revised Slaughter Incentive Payment Scheme increases payments to abattoirs to £10/head and runs until 31 March, which if taken up could increase throughputs. The arrival of additional butchers into the UK could also increase capacity. Some uptake of these schemes was already considered in January’s outlook.
"Even in the low backlog case, the implication is that some farmers will face significant practical challenges for weeks to come. This analysis is also limited to the possible physical size of the backlog. Pig producers are also struggling financially, as pig prices fall and feed costs remain high, with backlogged pigs doing nothing for cashflow or profitability," Mr. Wyatt said.
    Industry 2022-02-08 08:52:22 2025-07-26 01:37:08 Details Edit Delete

The total number of sheep available for mutton in 2017-18 is forecast to be down 6.0% on the previous season. However, 15% more were processed in the December quarter, which is a record for the period.

The total number of cattle available for the 2017-18 season is estimated to be even with the previous season but down 3.7% on the five-year average.

However, 15% more cattle were processed in the December quarter, which means 4.7% fewer cattle are available for the rest of the season, says Andrew Burtt, Chief Economist at B+LNZ.

“An increase in the number of cows and bulls processed – up 33% and 23% respectively – contributed to the higher number of cattle processed in the December quarter.

“The dry conditions for some dairy-producing regions drove some of the increased cow processing as farmers managed their feedstocks for the rest of the summer.

“The dry December quarter brought forward some of the bull processing for the same feed management reasons. 3779 EU pig prices sink in March
The average price for EU pigs has lost €9 in the last two weeks of March, stopping at €186.35/100kg at the end of the month. At this level, prices are still nearly €37 higher than the same period in 2019 and similar to January this year. The annual gap has narrowed from about €59 at the start of the year.
Panic buying created in the midst of coronavirus outbreaks and a cautious approach from some producers has increased the available supply of pig meat in the market forcing prices to go down.

However, there are still countries that show resilience and increased demand for pork. "Recent German market commentary suggests there is a strong demand to replenish retail stores at present. There is also optimism around increasing demand for exports to China in the coming weeks. 3596 Freight blockade in China makes the pork prices jump Compared to January 2019, prices are 116% higher and are expected to rise further as the shipments are delayed due to the coronavirus outbreak.
The average pork price in China is up by 116% compared to the same period last year. Even though after the Chinese New Year holiday pork price has been constantly depressed, this year a blockade caused by the coronavirus outbreak has impacted the market, making the food prices skyrocket.
Since the beginning of the outbreak, China has released from its state reserves almost 100,000 tonnes of pork but the need for meat imports is increasing. The only problem is that more than a dozen cities in China are completely lockdown and the labor force from ports and factories is trapped in this blockade. Rummors coming from the isolated cities are talking about prices of $16 or more per kg of pork.
Wholesale prices, which are just 4% below their record high in November, were boosted by lower supplies due to African swine fever and transport restrictions following the coronavirus outbreak. China’s consumer prices rose the fastest in more than eight years last month, with food prices jumping the most since 2008, according to official data released by the Chinese Statistical Bureau.
The impact caused fluctuations in the American market, were June lean hog futures have lost $25 in less than a week, just to make a partial comeback. "The word 'stable' should never be used in the current scenario of the lean hog futures or maybe even the psyche of many of the US producers. There are reports that imported pork is backing up at Chinese Ports. Not enough trucks arriving to take pork to the next destination due to Coronavirus reaction. We expect this is to get sorted fast," commented Jim Long, CEO and President of Genesus Inc.
The Chinese government announced that business operations may be resumed in some cities starting this week. However, on Monday, February 10, cities such as Beijing, Tianjin, Chengdu, Changchun, Shenyang, Dalian, Xian, Zhengzhou, and Changsha have remained blocked, according to Nippon Express, a freight company operating in China. Wuhan, the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak it was programmed to resume business operation Friday, February 14 but there is no certainty that this will happen.
As we wrote yesterday, one serious hit was taken by the catering industry. 934 Americans to eat about 100 kg of meat each in 2018 An estimate from US Department of Agriculture shows that the consumption of pork, beef and poultry is going to be high.
The average consumption of meat in the US is going to be around 100 kilograms (222 pounds), according to an estimate released by US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
Low prices for meat is to encourage the consumption on the US market, despite the recent trends in replacing meat with lab-grown products or plant-based protein. "The actual consumption of those products is low compared to the popularity of beef, pork, chicken and turkey", explained David Portalatin, a food industry analyst with NPD Group, for Kcur.org.

Mixed consumption

NPD’s research shows that when consumers say they are seeking protein, it’s typically the animal protein, though they now talk about wanting it “clean,” a definition that means different things to different people, although it includes terms such as organic, grass-fed, cage-free, or free-range. Americans also are packing on more protein through eggs and dairy substitutes like almond milk and coconut milk.

The existence of different conflicting trends in the market has given birth to a new type of consumer -the flexitarian- a person who eat mostly vegetables with some meat thrown in. "A confusing thing about consumer food trends is that conflicting trends are always at work, often within the same individual and over the course of the same day", explained David Sprinkle, a food market researcher with a company called Packaged Facts.
Nevertheless, the taste of meat seems to be irresistible to the American consumer's thanks to a record high supplies of red meat and chicken existing in the market and the low prices.
This brought back traditional dishes on the menu like pork craze, pulled pork sandwiches, bacon craze, gourmet burgers, fried chicken, beef short ribs and charcuterie.
