The Philippines reopen markets for German pork

The decision followed years of extensive negotiations by the German Federal Ministry of Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection (BMLEH).

Federal Minister Alois Rainer said : "Opening up markets for our producers and companies is a top priority for my ministry and me. It is therefore very good news for the agricultural and food sectors that the Philippines are once again allowing imports of German pork after many years – just as South Korea has already done. This shows that we are setting the right political priorities with our agricultural export strategy."

The import ban was prompted by the outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) in the EUand in Germany in 2020. As a result, several countries outside the European Union banned the import of German pork and pork products. In a letter dated April 22, 2026, the Philippine Department of Agriculture confirmed the recognition of so-called regionalization for the ASF as well as the lifting of the import ban from 2019. This means that the export of pork and pork offal to the Republic of the Philippines is permitted.

For several years already, the BMLEH intensive efforts have been made to lift this barrier through a regionalization agreement, most recently within the framework of talks at the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA). The agreement that was proposed had to be subsequently substantiated by detailed technical information on animal health in Germany.
