In his opening speech, Ricardo Santin, president of the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA), organizer of the event, announced the record of more than 120 thousand tons of Brazilian pork exported in the month of July alone.

Santin also highlighted the importance of pig farming and poultry farming for the national economy. Together, the segments are responsible for a gross annual production value that exceeds R$350 billion, in addition to generating more than 10 million jobs, both direct and indirect. Over the last 30 years, the chain has also generated R$1.5 trillion in tax revenue from exports.

"We provide wealth, employment and income, and we boost the development of regions that are today a reference because of the strength of this production chain", said the president of the entity. With an optimistic speech, reinforcing the resilience and strength of Brazilian agriculture, Santin also listed the main challenges and opportunities for the country to further expand its representation on the global stage through agribusiness.

This Tuesday, hours before the opening of SIAVS, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (MAPA) officially declared the end of the state of animal health emergency in Rio Grande do Sul due to Newcastle disease, identified in the municipality of Anta Gorda on July 17 .

Present at the event, Minister Carlos Fávaro took the opportunity to highlight the organization of the segment and the partnership between the Brazilian state and entities such as ABPA to quickly resolve the case. "This shows the importance of the organization and structure we have in the animal protein chain", he added, also highlighting transparency throughout the process.

The commitment to biosecurity was also one of the differences mentioned by the president of ABPA. However, according to him, progress needs to be made on other fronts. At the end of the event, the entity delivered to the minister and other authorities present a document with the sector's intentions for Brazil to increase not only its international competitiveness, but also the productivity and efficiency of production in the field.

In the 2024 edition, for the first time SIAVS integrates all links in the animal protein chain, with the inclusion of representatives from the beef, fish and milk chain — in partnership with the Brazilian Association of Meat Exporting Industries (ABIEC) and the Brazilian Fish Farming Association (Peixe BR).

In addition to Minister Carlos Fávaro, the opening ceremony was attended by the Minister of Agrarian Development and Family Agriculture, Paulo Teixeira, the governors of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite, of Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello, and of Paraná, Ratinho Jr.; the senator and former minister Tereza Cristina, the president of the Parliamentary Front for Agriculture, deputy, Pedro Lupion; the Secretary of Agriculture of São Paulo, Guilherme Piai; the Secretary of Agrarian Development of Pernambuco, Cícero Moraes; between others.

The opening lecture was given by economist Eduardo Gianetti, who analyzed the current scenario and the global challenges that open up opportunities for agribusiness and the Brazilian animal protein sector.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-08-08 00:15:35 2025-08-11 00:13:39 Details Edit Delete

8619 Global beef exports are expected to grow in 2025 The international beef market is experiencing a notable period, with significant increases in cattle prices in almost all participating countries, increases in global trade volumes, and significant increases in international beef prices.
Brazil, the world's leading exporter, will see a 52% year-over-year increase in its daily beef export turnover in June 2025, as a result of shipping 25% more beef, with FOB prices 22% higher than a year ago.

Global beef exports were expected to slow down in 2025, but the market, after growing from 12 million tonnes (MT) in 2023 to 13 MT in 2024, is expected to grow by another 500,000 MT this year, with Brazil and Australia playing a significant role on the supply side and a large number of purchasing countries on the demand side.

Some are accelerating their purchases, while others appear to have notable potential: the United States, Mexico, Europe, Israel, Russia, Egypt, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Malaysia, Vietnam, the Philippines, Indonesia, and Thailand, among the most prominent.

China is buying 10% less than last year, which was a record, but it should have significantly improved the prices it pays in recent months, otherwise it would run out of meat.

The US is importing 17% more than last year—the best is expected in the second half of the year—which, combined with significant demand from many other markets, more than offsets the lower purchases from China. ("There is life outside of China").

It can be estimated that international beef prices today are 15% higher than a year ago, with some products increasing by only 10% and others by 30%. The marked mismatch between global supply and demand is affecting international beef prices.
    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-07-09 00:15:42 2025-08-11 13:19:33 Details Edit Delete

5310 Brazilian chicken meat exports up 42% in value The international market for poultry products has faced strong pressure from high input costs, which is reflected in higher prices.
Poultry exports from Brazil started high this year, both in volume and value. According to data released by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA), poultry exports for January totaled 349,100 tonnes, up by 19.7% compared to the shipments carried out in the same period last year. In terms of value, exports have reached $ 616.9 million (+42%), a situation that reflects the increase in prices in the global market.
"The rise in protein prices is a global phenomenon. The average price of Brazilian exports this month was 18.6% higher, which helped to reduce the strong pressure generated by the costs of corn and soybeans, in addition to other inputs that made the Brazilian market more expensive. The positive point is that, despite the higher price, Brazilian chicken meat is still in strong demand thanks to attributes such as the quality of the products and the fact that Brazil is the only major free exporter of Avian Influenza," confirmed Ricardo Santin, ABPA's president.
China, the biggest importer of chicken meat from Brazil, increased its purchases by 4.6%, with 48,300 tonnes in January. It is followed by the United Arab Emirates with 42,800 tonnes (+96.6%) and the EU with 18,100 tonnes (+53.5%). Noteworthy destinations for Brazilian chicken meat are the Philippines, with 11,400 tonnes (+339.4%), South Korea, with 10,000 tonnes (+94%) and Russia, with 9,200 tonnes (100%).
"The health issue is also dictating the behavior of the international market for Brazil. Countries in Europe, Asia and Africa have been facing outbreaks of the disease and there is a critical situation installed, especially in European Union nations. In this context, the fact that we have never registered Avian Influenza in the country has been a competitive differentiator, reinforcing Brazil's position as a safe harbor for the world demand for chicken meat," commented Luis Rua, ABPA's Director of Markets.
    Market 2022-02-21 08:25:10 2025-08-10 23:50:24 Details Edit Delete
6561 Maastricht to host World Meat Congress 2023 The International Meat Secretariat (IMS) and the Dutch Meat Industry Association (COV) are pleased to announce that from 11 to 13 October 2023, the World Meat Congress 2023 will be held in Maastricht, the Netherlands.
It is expected that hundreds of people working in the meat industry and adjacent lines of business will attend. 4502 Poultry meat is safe, concluded IPC The International Poultry Council (IPC) says Russian authorities have responded promptly to limit the spread of avian flu to humans.
In the wake of news that seven workers on a poultry farm in Russia are the first humans to be infected with the H5N8 strain of avian influenza, the International Poultry Council (IPC) believes it is important to ensure consumers that poultry meat is a safe food.
Avian influenza is a potential zoonotic disease and there are internationally established measures that guarantee food security and that include the proper handling and cooking of birds, as well as worker safety and biosafety. In addition, sick birds cannot enter the supply chain.

"In Russia, authorities responded promptly to the incident, implementing measures to protect humans and animals and to minimize risks, ensuring that the situation does not progress. All seven people affected are in good health and the clinical course of the disease was very mild, the authorities confirmed. The head of the Russian Federal Service for Monitoring Consumer Rights and Human Welfare also said that the WHO (World Health Organization) was notified, according to the normal protocol", siad IPC in a press release.

Based on scientific knowledge of avian influenza, chicken and other poultry products are safe food if cooked properly, according to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO). No plant birds with the disease should enter the food chain, they note, and consumers can remain confident in the safety of poultry meat and the efforts of the poultry industry to ensure the safety and protection of their customers.

The poultry industry, in coordination with government authorities, continuously monitors and seeks to identify the risks of avian influenza early. These risks are due, in part, to exposure to wild animals with viral positivity. As in this case, immediate actions are taken to identify specific strains. These ongoing efforts control the spread of the disease. In addition, biosafety measures implemented by the industry minimize the risk of disease transfer.

In addition, the scientific literature shows unequivocally that avian influenza is not a food safety problem. Chicken meat is nutritious and safe; consumers should only cook and prepare it properly, following normal hygiene rules

In rare situations, individuals who have frequent and prolonged contact with poultry species - mainly people working in the sector - have been infected with the avian influenza virus, as was the case in this case. This accidental infection is self-limiting because the infected person is unlikely to transmit the virus to another person.
Governments and industry specifically monitor the potential transfer of avian influenza to humans and act together to eliminate these risks. And, as noted here, the virus cannot be transferred from one human being to another. Consumers can therefore be assured that properly cooked poultry is safe for consumption.
    Industry 2021-02-25 09:52:23 2025-08-09 00:46:35 Details Edit Delete

3695 Interpack postponed to 2021 The international trade fair interpack will now take place from 25 February to 3 March 2021.
The world is closing in front of coronavirus outbreak and Germany does not make an exception. The international trade fair interpack, initially scheduled to take place in May 2020, has been postponed for 2021, according to the organizers. The event will now take place from 25 February to 3 March 2021.

In doing so, Messe Düsseldorf is following the recommendation of the crisis management team of the German Federal Government to take into account the principles of the Robert Koch Institute when assessing the risk of major events. Based on this recommendation and the recent significant increase in the number of people infected with the new corona virus (SARS-CoV-2), including in Europe, Messe Düsseldorf has reassessed the situation. In addition, there is the general ruling issued by the city of Düsseldorf on 11 March 2020, in which major events with more than 1,000 participants present at the same time are generally prohibited.

"The decision was taken in close consultation with our advisory board and sponsoring associations," emphasises Werner M. Dornscheidt, Chairman of the Board of Management of Messe Düsseldorf GmbH. It also reflects the wishes of individual industries: "As their partner, we are currently doing everything in our power to reduce the economic losses suffered by our exhibitors".

"The city of Düsseldorf is following the instructions of the state government. Our aim is to slow down the spread of the corona virus so that the health system can continue to function properly," emphasizes Thomas Geisel, Lord Mayor of the state capital of Düsseldorf and Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Düsseldorf trade fair company.

In order to fulfill Messe Düsseldorf's responsibility for risk prevention, the company primarily had to minimise the increased risk of infection at major events. Measures to reduce the risk of transmission at major events, which the Robert Koch Institute has clearly defined - such as ventilation of the venue appropriate to the risk of infection, the exclusion of persons from risk groups and the comprehensive installation of entrance screening, were practically impossible to implement. Also comparable measures were and are unreasonable in view of the unforeseeable rapid development and the size of the various events with up to 60,000 participants.

interpack’s industry partners support the decision to postpone the fair and together with those responsible, are counting on a successful event next year. "interpack is the absolute top event for the international packaging industry and related processing industries. The trade fair thrives on personal encounters and direct exchange between people from all over the world. This is only possible if there are no health risks involved. Therefore, the postponement is responsible and right. We are looking forward to next year's event to discuss the issues that are defining the industry, such as sustainability, and to present appropriate solutions," comments Christian Traumann, President of interpack 2020 and Managing Director & Group President at Multivac Sepp Haggenmüller SE & Co. KG.

"The corona virus and the associated restrictions now represent a major challenge for the entire mechanical engineering sector. The possible and currently unforeseeable effects of the pathogen with an incalculable risk of infection, the threat of quarantine for returnees, general travel restrictions in some countries, but also considerable travel restrictions on the part of many companies, unfortunately, make it impossible to successfully hold the interpack in May. The VDMA, as a supporting association of interpack, welcomes a postponement under the given exceptional circumstances. The new date now ensures reliability in planning" says Richard Clemens, Managing Director of the VDMA Food Processing and Packaging Machinery Association.

This is another blow for the industry after other major events in the world such as FoodEx Japan, Food Expo Greece and Alimentaria Barcelona have been canceled or postponed.

    Events 2020-03-17 06:16:58 2025-08-08 07:49:46 Details Edit Delete
7197 The IAWS Animal Walfare certification establishes a transparent communication channel with the consumer The INTERPORC 'IAWS' Animal Welfare certification is a “tool for empowerment of the pig sector because it allows us to establish a transparent and direct communication channel with the consumer.” This was highlighted by Alberto Herranz, general director of INTERPORC at the Porciforum event held in Lérida.
During his speech, entitled 'Reputational Communication and Animal Welfare – Keys to empowering the pig sector', Herranz referred to the proactivity in terms of animal welfare of the Spanish pig sector, as well as its capacity for constant evolution and adaptation to changing conditions and increasing consumer demands.

"People have the right to know how food is produced, its nutritional content and the food safety measures that are followed. That is the challenge that the pork sector faces daily. And, given that we comply, even above the required regulations, I consider that we also have the obligation to disseminate it on behalf of the professionals who, with their good work and professionalism, make it possible", he stated.

In this direction, Herranz has explained the approach to communication carried out by the Interprofessional to promote the 'B+ Animal Welfare Commitment' seal and its IAWS Technical Regulation, accreditable by ENAC. "Our goal is to show the consumer that European legislation is the most demanding in the world, and based on it we have voluntarily obtained an even stricter certification in animal welfare".

Measures that have led the Spanish pig sector to work with a holistic vision of well-being that includes aspects such as health, biosecurity, animal management, food safety and traceability. All this through a regulation that is periodically reviewed and adapted thanks to a Scientific Committee of experts in animal welfare.

"In this way, we constantly stay ahead of both future regulations and consumer demands. That is a reality that allows us to affirm with total pride that we have the most respectful production system in the world with regard to animal welfare", concluded the director of INTERPORC.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-03-11 00:05:21 2025-08-11 15:39:15 Details Edit Delete

6566 INTERPORC promotes a plan to address the future challenges of the pig sector The Interprofesional INTERPORC has drawn up a Pig Sector Strategic Plan, in which it defines 8 strategic lines with which to address future challenges that arise.
The document was presented by its director, Alberto Herranz, together with Pedro Rodrigo and Miguel Sabater, managers of Deloitte's Future of Food initiative , a professional services firm with which this plan has been worked on. In the words of Herranz, it is intended to be a roadmap that "mitigates the impacts faced by the sector and prepares us to compete in the new scenario that is coming".

A scenario that, as explained by the director of INTERPORC, is marked by the change in trend experienced in 2022, after a period of sustained growth over the last decade (+4% per year between 2010-21). In the last year, we have witnessed a significant increase in production costs and the consequent decrease in production, derived, among other things, from the war in Ukraine and the consequent difficulties in international trade or the supply of raw materials.

But also, he added, "we are facing two major challenges: the new regulatory requirements in terms of animal welfare and the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions and the increase in the global competitive intensity of other export markets”.

Given this panorama, the Spanish pig sector, Herranz pointed out, "requires a transformation to achieve its strategic aspiration of converging towards a model of sustainability, resilience, competitiveness and innovation that maintains it as a world benchmark and the main support of the European food sovereignty. That is the raison of this plan”.

However, the director of INTERPORC has qualified, the Pig Sector Strategic Plan "requires the active involvement of all sectoral agents for its successful achievement, as well as implementing a set of critical initiatives at individual and sectoral level".

The Pig Sector Strategic Plan, as explained by Miguel Sabater, Monitor Deloitte's senior manager, specifies 8 strategic lines: enhance the image and reputation of the sector; strengthen biosafety policies; promote the development of high-value products and markets; transform the configuration of the value chain towards a more competitive, sustainable and resilient model; attract, develop and retain the necessary talent; activate investment in R+D+i in sustainability and product; and promote the circular economy throughout the value chain and promote new sources of business for the sector in the future.

Together with these 8 objectives, "22 independent initiatives, executable and transversal to the entire sector" are also defined, which allow them to be developed.

The Deloitte expert has emphasized that “implementing these strategic lines will not only mean an additional source of income, but also an excellent opportunity to improve the sector's reputation. By adopting sustainable practices and promoting the efficient use of resources, we can ensure that the sector is recognized as a leader in the circular economy in Spain”.
    Market adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2023-07-07 00:15:47 2025-08-10 23:31:31 Details Edit Delete
5673 INTERPORC applauds the regulation of video surveillance in Spanish slaughterhouses The Interprofesional INTERPORC has expressed its satisfaction with the approval of the Royal Decree that establishes regulations for the control of the welfare of animals in slaughterhouses through the installation of video surveillance systems, a measure that companies that have the INTERPORC Animal Welfare Spain (IAWS) certification have been applying voluntarily for three years.
Therefore, this law promoted by the Ministry of Consumer Affairs serves to confirm the work that slaughterhouses, industries and farms carry out with transparency to provide an early response to the demands of new consumers.

Alberto Herranz, director of INTERPORC, points out that "the Spanish white-coated pig sector is at the forefront of the world in terms of animal welfare, and our companies are already prepared for this law."

For this reason, it emphasizes that "for us, this Royal Decree is nothing more than a great opportunity to demonstrate to society our commitment to animal welfare, which reaches the point of having started the installation of cameras three years ago, long before give form to this law”.

The 'Certified Welfare Commitment' seal, whose regulations require the installation of cameras, is voluntary. Despite this, since its creation, pig companies have been incorporating it rapidly, to the point that more than 60% of pig production is already certified, which can be verified in a transparent and up-to-date manner on the web: www. welfareanimalcertificate.com .

Daniel de Miguel, International Director of INTERPORC, also states that “Spain is the first country in the European Union with a law like this”. Our leadership in animal welfare is already recognized throughout the world thanks to our production model and IAWS certification, but this news is welcome as it gives us more arguments to endorse a leadership position that has led us to be present in more than 130 countries”.

IAWS Technical Regulations

The European regulation, which is the one applied in the Spanish pig sector, is the strictest in animal welfare. To this we must add that the technical regulation of the voluntary seal 'Certified Welfare Commitment' developed by INTERPORC, imposes even more demanding animal welfare conditions than those of said regulation.

Specifically, its regulation states that certification will only be obtained by “slaughter centers that have a continuous image recording system installed in the areas where live animals are found (unloading area, stables, pre-stunned, post-stunned and slaughter). )”.

The images must be stored for at least one month and be available to the official veterinary services. In this way, everything related to animal welfare can be monitored, guaranteeing good practices in this matter at all stages.

Regarding the control of these demands, it corresponds to 14 independent certification entities accredited by ENAC, which are in charge of carrying out audits that verify compliance with the specifications of the IAWS Technical Regulations.
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-08-29 08:30:44 2025-08-10 19:05:50 Details Edit Delete
