6992 | Bord Bia secures EU funding for an organic beef and lamb campaign | Bord Bia has won two new EU contracts to promote organic EU beef and lamb and a separate campaign to promote EU mushrooms, as announced by the Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine. |
The combined value of the two campaigns is €5.7 million over three years. This comprises €3.96 million in EU funding and €1.73 million from Bord Bia and industry funding.

The organic campaign will invest €2.7 million (including VAT) in promoting organic beef and lamb in Austria, Belgium, Germany and Sweden, while the mushroom campaign will see €3 million (including VAT) allocated to promoting mushrooms across the UK.

Jim O’Toole, Bord Bia Chief Executive welcomed the additional funding support from the EU: "This will be the first EU co-funded campaign for organic beef and lamb and comes at a pivotal time for the sector, as we look to increase market demand in key markets. The domestic market is the most important market for organic horticulture, dairy and eggs, and we have recently invested in a €1 million organic campaign here in Ireland. Nearly two thirds of Irish organic beef is destined for export markets, while half of organic lamb is currently sold overseas. This new funding will ensure we can support the development of four export markets for organic beef and lamb, identified by Bord Bia as having the greatest growth potential".

The business to business focused organic beef and lamb campaign aims to raise awareness of the positive attributes of organic beef and lamb, while increasing trade recognition of the EU organic logo.

Germany is currently Ireland’s largest market for both organic beef and lamb, while Belgium is the second largest market for organic Irish lamb. 8490 | Boehringer Ingelheim receives marketing authorization for bluetongue vaccine in Germany | Boehringer Ingelheim has received marketing authorization for its vaccine against bluetongue virus serotype 3 in accordance with Article 25 of EU Regulation 2019/6. |
The vaccine was developed in just seven months in collaboration with Bioveta and has been authorized for use since June 2024 under a vaccine authorization regulation to combat the current BTV-3 outbreak. BTV-3 causes severe clinical symptoms in sheep and cattle. In addition to the considerable animal suffering, outbreaks can lead to significant economic losses for farmers, disrupt international trade, and limit food supplies. To date, more than 13 million vaccine doses have been provided in Germany to contain the spread of BTV-3 and its devastating effects.

"Our vaccine protects the health of sheep and cattle, thus securing the livelihoods of those who care for them. This approval underscores our commitment to supporting farmers, veterinarians, and authorities in the fight against BTV-3", says Barbara Umbs, Head of Livestock at Boehringer Ingelheim. Notifiable animal diseases such as bluetongue continue to pose a significant threat, underscoring the need for long-term preventive solutions to protect livestock.

Bluetongue virus is transmitted by midges (Culicoides). The disease has a strong seasonal pattern, with increasing incidence as temperatures rise. There are 28 different serotypes of BTV that only infect ruminants such as cattle and sheep. Boehringer Ingelheim's vaccination against serotype 3 protects susceptible animals from the painful symptoms of the disease and from death. Experts recommend vaccinating animals well in advance of the midge flight season. This requires one injection for sheep and two injections for cattle, three weeks apart.
| 1 | Technology | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2025-05-21 00:20:52 | 2025-07-05 03:04:58 | Details Edit Delete | |

These itineraries have been very effective in generating new business for the sector, providing Irish companies with an excellent opportunity to showcase their processing facilities and allowing the customers to see first hand the world-class environment in which Irish seafood is produced. These visits can provide a guarantee to Chinese customers on traceability, sustainability and food safety, all key issues of growing concern to the Chinese middle-class consumer.

During the last 3 years, Bord Bia has welcomed more than 35 Asian customers to Ireland on customised itineraries. Many of these visits have delivered new business for Irish seafood processors, and in April 2018 as part of its Marketplace International event, Bord Bia will host an additional 20 Chinese seafood buyers in Ireland.

The Chinese seafood market reached 20 billion euros in value in 2013, making China the world's leading seafood trading country, according to Bord Bia.

The increase in imported seafood is due to growing incomes and increased urbanization. China now accounts for one-quarter of the world’s seafood consumption, and the United Nation’s FAO projects China will need an extra 16 million metric tonnes of seafood by 2020 to meet growing demand.
| 1 | Market | 2017-11-15 10:54:24 | 2025-07-05 01:33:11 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4068 | "Buy local" fever hits the UK meat market | BMPA recently launched a new campaign to promote British meat as the first choice for consumers. |
The British Meat Processors Association has recently launched a new brand and website ( SustainableBritishMeat.org ) to explain why British meat should be the simple first choice for consumers. The campaign focuses on attributes such as sustainability, high standards of quality and support for British farming built-in. "We want this website to become the rallying point for everyone involved in producing British meat and all those involved in the scientific and technological innovation that is helping us to better understand and improve the quality, traceability and eco-friendliness of our food production," mentioned the association in a press release.
Consumers, wherever they are in the world, are increasingly concerned about the safety, standards and sustainability of the food they eat. They want to know that, whatever diet they choose to follow, their food will be safe and nourishing, but not at the expense of the planet.
Nick Allen, CEO of the British Meat Processors Association highlights the fact that: “Most people rely on information in the media to help them make their diet and lifestyle choices. But not all that information is correct. In fact, some of it is quite misleading. It’s become very difficult to navigate the confusing and often contradictory opinions, pseudo-science and genuine science in the media that are currently shaping ordinary people’s choices about what they should and shouldn’t be eating.”
Livestock is responsible for just 5.7% of methane emissions in the UK, which is much lower than the average global figure of 14% that most often gets quoted in the media but which includes environmentally un-friendly farming systems in countries like Brazil.
Giving up eating British meat will be of a much less environmental benefit than giving up eating Brazilian meat. And, substituting British meat for a more environmentally damaging processed plant-based alternative could mean that concerned consumers inadvertently create the opposite effect to the one they intended. Britain produces meat to some of the highest food and animal welfare standards and with the lowest environmental footprint on the planet.

"Consumers around the world are increasingly willing to pay a premium for this. So, we also want to use this new Sustainable British Meat website as a platform to help promote British produce, not just here in the UK but to all trading partners around the world," said the press release.
| 1 | Market | 2020-09-02 05:32:22 | 2025-07-03 19:15:53 | Details Edit Delete | ||
5273 | Huge rise in costs of meat exports and imports from the UK | BMPA predicts a persistent loss of trade with the EU around 20%. |
British meat exporters to the EU are facing new costs related to bureaucracy and paperwork imposed by the UK Government. The topic is not new and it started at the beginning of 2021 when the extra cost to the meat industry of Brexit bureaucracy was estimated to be between £90-£120 million a year for the UK meat exporters and 20% in loss of trade between parts. However, starting this summer, the rising cost of doing business is about to hit European exporters who currently supply 25% to 30% of the food on British shelves.

"Until now, the Government has taken the decision to wave through supplies into the UK without requiring the same paperwork and physical checks. But from July, the same extra time and cost burdens to get through customs will be imposed on our EU suppliers. This means that EU imports will suddenly become more expensive, and European exporters will become less inclined to keep supplying to the UK," the British Meat Processors Association said in a press release.
Starting July, EU meat suppliers in the UK will have to fill out additional papers, besides the Export Health Certificate that is now required. "In addition, there are now numerous new costs and overheads that previously didn’t exist. These include extra administrative staff, additional paperwork, record keeping and systems to support the issuing of EHCs, port charges, customs agents’ fees… the list goes on," warns BMPA.
The costs will most probably be transferred to consumers may raise concerns about the supplies in the market. Nick Allen, Chief Executive of the British Meat Processors Association explained: “After a year of dealing with the new post-Brexit customs and certification system, our members are reporting a huge rise in cost, which either has to be absorbed or passed on to their EU customers, rendering British exporters less competitive. Millions of pounds are being spent on extra paperwork and checks, but for zero extra benefit to British companies. The Government could solve this problem by entering into a Veterinary Agreement with the EU which would instantly negate the need for most of the current bureaucracy and physical border checks and give British exporters a fighting chance to regain the trade they’ve lost – trade that simply can’t be replaced by selling goods to more distant markets”.
| 1 | Market | 2022-02-03 11:47:31 | 2025-07-05 03:40:58 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3906 | British meat industry cries out for skilled butchers |
Even before the coronavirus crisis, UK meat processing companies were contending with a 10-15% shortfall in skilled workers but in this times the gap seems to become wider. From the British Meat Processors Association's perspective, the government must act fast to attract skilled migrants to cover the gap in order to prevent a significant disruption in the supply chain. "It takes up to two years of training before a new recruit to the meat processing industry has the skill to work safely and productively on different parts of the production line.

The job is physically demanding, requiring strength and discipline as well as specialist knowledge of various areas ranging from knife skills, animal anatomy and use of processing equipment through to an understanding of food quality, safety standards and traceability. It’s also work that is difficult and often impossible to automate, which means we always need people," said the association in a press release.
Beyond the pool of UK workers, the shortfall can then only be made up by bringing in skilled workers from abroad. However the current Shortage Occupation List doesn’t include the category of worker we need, so BMPA has been lobbying Government to add ‘Butcher’ to that list.

"The ‘Butcher’ category is wider than one might imagine and actually includes every type of skill that we’re missing. It includes slaughtermen as well as the boning, cutting and trimming specialists that prepare carcases for storage, processing and sale. The British meat processing industry is a strategically important cornerstone of the UK food supply chain and we can see an opportunity to strengthen it by offering career opportunities to both British and overseas workers, all of whom are equally vital.

But in order to do that, we need the category of ‘Butcher’ to be added to the Shortage Occupation List," said BMPA.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-06-17 10:53:26 | 2025-07-05 03:59:44 | Details Edit Delete | |||
4127 | Brexit hits again the British meat industry | BMPA fears that delay in clarifying several issues with the EU may create losses in orders from this month onwards for product due for delivery in 2021. |
UK government has delayed to address a couple of sensitive issues such as new export certification requirements and Health Marks and the situation may create losses in orders from this month onwards for product due for delivery in the new year, according to the British Meat Processors Association (BMPA). A delay in recognizing Great Britain as Third Country by the European officials will have a monthly impact of £ 175 million for the industry, warns Nick Allen, Chief Executive of BMPA, "While a request has been submitted by the UK, there is currently no firm indication as to when the EU will consider and vote on formal country approval, let alone when and if plant inspections will be done.
It’s highly unlikely that the EU will refuse us Third Country status. The bigger question is when it will be granted and how much damage to our food businesses and supply chains will be done in the process," he said. Another hot issue regarding trade between the UK and the EU is the rules for imports.
Michel Barnier, the EU head negotiator explained earlier this month that the European Commission "need to know in full what a country’s rules are, [including] for imports. The same objective process applies to all listed countries". Recent speculation over whether or not Boris Johnson’s government will relax import rules and standards in order to do a deal with the United States may have prompted the EU to re-assess the Third Country approval given to the UK in August last year.
"We need all of this to happen urgently, otherwise British firms will start losing orders from this month onwards for product due for delivery in the new year," added Mr Allen.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-09-29 08:15:55 | 2025-07-04 21:16:38 | Details Edit Delete |
