2071 | Two AI cases reported in Southern Bulgaria | The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) has announced recently that the Avian Influenza (AI) virus has been detected at a duck farm and a chicken farm in the village of Voivodovo, Haskovo, southern Bulgaria, Reuters reports. |
The two AI cases were confirmed by lab results, while an investigation is currently underway to determine the origin of the outbreaks.

The authorities announced also that all the birds on those two farms will be culled and that measures are taken to prevent the spreading of the disease. A three-kilometer protection zone and a surveillance zone of 10 kilometers have already been set up, which prohibit the marketing and transport of domestic, wild birds and eggs in the region.

So far, there are no reported cases of avian influenza virus transmission from birds to humans, but the discovery of such outbreaks has forced slaughtering campaigns and farmers have been ordered to keep the birds closed.
The World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) has asked all of its 180 Member States to increase biosecurity measures on farms, markets and in poultry trade to limit the spread of the disease.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-10-19 10:12:16 | 2025-08-13 01:51:08 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3306 | Two American giants are getting prepared to start massive pork exports to China | JBS and Smithfield USA have blocked the supply chain for pigs fed with Ractopamine in order to gain access to the Chinese market. |

JBS and Smithfield USA announced that they will now stop accepting swine fed Ractopamine, a growth promoter that is forbidden in the Chinese market. That gives hopes for the US pork industry that tariffs imposed in the trade war between Washington and Beijing will be eliminated or at least will go down to an acceptable level.
"Both U.S. pork and beef are at a disadvantage in China due to retaliatory duties, but even with this extra burden U.S. red meat is making its way into China. However, the U.S. industry will be better positioned to serve the Chinese market if we can get back on a level playing field with our competitors," declared Dan Halstrom, President and CEO of the US Meat Export Federation, in an interview for EuroMeat News.
"Combined Smithfield and JBS at 213,000 per day are over 40% U.S. total packer capacity", observes Mr Jim Long, President and CEO, Genesus Inc, in his latest global report.
By now, China's pig meat production has declined by 25%, according to a Rabobank analysis. The world's largest Agricultural bank also believes that the current drop in the Chinese pig herd is about 50%, meaning that the global pig inventory has lost 25% only on China's ASF situation. A drop of 10% to 15% in China's pork production is expected for 2020.
"Currently, China's average price is 28.52 RMB/kg or $1.81 U.S. live weight a lb. (a 260 lb hog-$470 U.S.). A further 10% drop is at least one million fewer market hogs a week on top of the current market hog supply. It’s mind-boggling. How high can prices go? The pressure to import pork will be even greater as every week China’s hog and pork supply declines," added Mr. Long.
Also, Dr. Steven McOrist shared his opinion on ASF situation in Southeast Asia, where a deficit of 5 million tonnes of pork is expected to be registered next year, as ASF is now present in countries such as Vietnam, Myanmar, Philippines, Laos, and Cambodia. That could represent a push for the US pork industry, which is currently facing tariffs of almost 70% on pork in the Chinese market, but also for Canada, who's pork exports in China have been suspended since July.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-10-09 08:45:20 | 2025-08-13 02:45:36 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1123 | Two Australian slaughterhouses received the green light to export beef to Malaysia | Two Australian abattoirs, one from Queensland and another from Victoria, have received permission once again to export their beef products to Malaysia after Malaysian authorities prohibited the companies' shipments in August last year due to issues regarding Halal certification, ABC reports. |
The two processing plants received approval to export on the 5th of April.

In total, six facilities were banned from exporting beef to Malaysia in August last year.

The Australian Meat Industry Council (AMIC) CEO Patrick Hutchinson told ABC that the council is working hard to get approval for export for the remaining delisted abattoirs.

The Federal Department of Agriculture has told ABC Rural in a written statement that 17 Australian meat establishments are currently approved to export to Malaysia.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-18 12:36:59 | 2025-08-12 17:46:07 | Details Edit Delete | ||

4203 | Two bird flu cases reported in the UK | Public Health England (PHE) has declared that the risk to public health from the virus is very low and the Food Standards Agency stated that bird flu poses a minimal food safety risk for consumers. |
Following the confirmation of low pathogenic Avian Influenza of the H5N2 strain at a small commercial farm near Deal, Kent, a further unrelated case has been confirmed at a site near Frodsham in Cheshire.
All birds on both sites will be humanely culled to limit the spread of disease. Control zones have also been put in place around the infected sites to limit the risk of spread; a 1km Low Pathogenic Avian Influenza (LPAI) Restricted Zone has been enforced at the Deal site and a temporary 3km and a 10km control zone has been put in place around the Frodsham premises to limit the spread of the H5N8 strain. Further testing is underway at the latest site to determine if the H5N8 strain in Cheshire is highly pathogenic and potentially related to the virus currently circulating Europe.
Public Health England (PHE) has declared that the risk to public health from the virus is very low and the Food Standards Agency stated that bird flu poses a minimal food safety risk for UK consumers; thoroughly cooked poultry and poultry products are safe to eat.

“Two unrelated cases of Avian Influenza have been confirmed at different sites in the UK. Immediate action has been taken to limit the risk of spread, including plans to cull the remaining poultry and captive birds at the farm. Bird keepers must remain vigilant and report any signs of the disease, whilst ensuring that good biosecurity is practiced onsite.

We are working with Defra and are remaining vigilant on poultry sites to minimise the risk to the national flock. We will closely follow this and provide an update over the coming days,” said Chief Executive of the British Poultry Council, Richard Griffiths.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-11-03 10:11:50 | 2025-08-12 02:31:20 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2760 | Two countries are accounting for 82% of the global cattle market in 2018 | The US is the world's largest importer of cattle, while Turkey is coming second with a figure of 1.2 million head imported. |
Last year, Turkey has broken its own record in livestock imports, reaching a number of 1.2 million head, according to Republican People's Party (CHP) deputy Ilhami Ozcan Aygun. In his opinion, the level of livestock imports is scary and unsustainable as it is 24 times over the figures reported in 2014 (50,000 cattle head). In fact, since then Turkey has gradually increased its cattle imports: 203,000 in 2015, 494,000 in 2016, and 896,000 in 2017.
The global trade with cattle has reached 3.78 million head last year, with the US being the world's largest importer (1.9 million head of cattle) followed by Turkey. Combined, the two countries are accounting for almost 82% of the world's cattle imports, according to Ahval News.

| 1 | Market | 2019-03-27 13:28:31 | 2025-08-12 18:24:01 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3921 | Two different crisis are shaking the global meat market |
Amid COVID-19 crisis, seems almost everyone forgotten that the global meat industry has to resurface from another crisis that changes the global trade landscape. The ongoing ASF crisis in Asia is far from over and the damage expected this year is going to be far worst than what we have witnessed in 2019, warns a new Rabobank report.
"Herd recovery is underway in China, and has been proceeding faster than expected, but a further significant drop in pork production is expected in 2020. The ASF situation is stabilizing in Vietnam, but further reductions in 2020 production are expected. Meanwhile, in the Philippines, the disease continues to spread. As such, China and Southeast Asia will continue to increase pork imports, with the expectation that China’s pork imports will reach record levels,", said Rabobank's report.
The estimates for China's pig herd losses in 2019 are ranging from 35% to 40%, which is very close to 20% of the global pig inventory. Besides that, the disease is present not only in Asia but also in Europe, where outbreaks are reported constantly in Ukraine, Bulgaria, Romania or Poland.
Combined with the complications added by the COVID-19crisis in processing plants from Germany, Spain, Italy, United States, Canada and Brazil, the ASF virus represents one of the largest threats to the stability of the global food market.
Analysts were expected increased production of pork in North America, Brazil and several parts of Europe but the impact of COVID-19 has erased most of those expectations.
"The main uncertainties we see in global pork markets, associated with ASF and influenced by Covid-19, are: the loss of production associated with processing plant closures and slowing of operations; the possibility that ongoing geopolitical tensions between the US and China will affect pork trade; and the risk of an ASF outbreak in a major producing country in Europe, such as Germany," commented Justin Sherrard, RaboResearch Animal Protein Strategist.
COVID-19 will also affect pork consumption due to the closure of foodservice and high prices appeared in the light of new security measures imposed for processors.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-06-23 11:42:37 | 2025-08-12 04:16:13 | Details Edit Delete | |||
3947 | Two JBS and BRF pork plants on China's blacklist | Imports from the two plants located in Brazil's Rio Grande do Sul state have been suspended due to novel coronavirus concerns. |
The General Administration of Customs China announced that it has suspended pork imports from to Brazilian plants owned by JBS and BRF due to COVID-19 concerns, reports Mercopress. China is the largest buyer of Brazilian pork, beef and chicken. It has requested that meat exporters globally certify their products are coronavirus free, which BRF, JBS, and other Brazilian meatpackers have already done.

A total of six Brazil meat plants have now been blocked from exporting to China amid rising concerns over thousands of cases of COVID-19 among slaughterhouse workers in the country. Brazil has the second-worst COVID-19 outbreak in the world after the United States and China is more careful regarding meat exports after a new cluster was reported in a meat market in Beijing last month.
German producer Tonnies and four Dutch abattoirs are facing the same problem after outbreaks have been reported at their facilities.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-07-06 11:47:52 | 2025-08-13 05:31:56 | Details Edit Delete | ||
3768 | Two JBS plants under surveillance due to COVID-19 infections | The production process can be halted at two units in Colorado and Nebraska, USA , after several cases of coronavirus were confirmed among workers. |
Helth officials in Colorado and Nebraska are on alert due to several COVID-19 infections reported among workers in two meat processing plants owned by the US subsidiary of Brazilian meat giant JBS. An investigation has began at the plant in Greely, Weld County, Colorado after the epidemiologists learned of positive COVID-19 cases at the plant, and the department is learning about “lots” of employees seeking care in local emergency departments and public clinics.
"We are taking this situation seriously and are rapidly prioritizing any cases that may be associated with JBS. We've even added additional disease investigator staff to help with this investigation. The health department continues to stress to essential businesses that prevent employees from working while sick and adapting processes to ensure physical distancing is critical to preventing spread in their workforce and community," said the Health Department in Weld County in a statement, mentioned by Drovers magazine.
At another JBS’ facility, in Grand Island, Nebraska, 10 cases of COVID-19 were reported by the state’s Central District Health Department. Both plants are considered essential businesses, which allows the operations to continue 24 hours a day, seven days a week. The Greeley plant can process 5,400 head of cattle per day, while the Grand Island plant has a capacity of 5,200 head per day.
In a statement to news outlets, JBS USA said, "As our community collectively faces this challenge, we must work together to defeat coronavirus. Food is an essential need, and our team is working hard to keep food on local grocery store shelves at a time when many Americans are unemployed, out of work or sheltering in place.

No one is forced to come to work and no one is punished for being absent for health reasons. If someone is sick or lives with someone who is sick, we send them home. Every day, thousands of committed team members show up to the Greeley beef production facility to help our community and our nation face this crisis,” the statement said.

On the other hand, Tyson Foods announced it has suspended operations at it’s Columbus Junction, Iowa, pork plant “out of an abundance of caution” as more than two dozen employees tested positive for COVID-19. "Our meat and poultry plants are experiencing varying levels of production impact, due to the planned implementation of additional worker safety precautions and worker absenteeism," said Tyson CEO, Noel White.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-04-08 06:03:25 | 2025-08-11 11:54:53 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2148 | Two major feeder pig producers, Denmark and Netherlands, are under financial pressure | Higher feed costs have reduced the margins for feeder pig by 23% compared to 2017, according to a Canadian analyst. |
The inventory numbers for the pigs in the EU may be steady in the last few years but the profitability is in decline, observes Jim Long, president and CEO at Genesus Canada.
"One indicator of market trouble is the collapse of feeder pig prices now at €33 per head, 23% lower than a year ago. This reflects more supply than demand and is putting large financial pressure on two major feeder pig producers: Denmark and the Netherlands. Feeder pig prices are seen to be challenged by higher feed costs. The average hog price in EU is around €1.45 kilogram, which is a good price for America but not great for EU producers", commented Mr Long in his Global Market report.
That is explaining also why the trade block is the world's largest exporter of pork. Export data presented by the European Commision shows that in the first eight months of this year EU exported 2,564,438 tonnes of pork.
Over a third of EU’s exports go to China, who is a big market for EU and have done a much better job capturing the market compared to the United States, despite weekly hog prices significantly higher, mentions the report.
"Obviously EU hog prices are higher, but we don’t sell market hogs into export markets. We sell pork. We don’t have all the correct data but we expect if we had the wholesale pork cut-outs prices the difference would be much narrower due to the fact that the US packer gross margins have been historically high over the last three years. EU packer margins haven’t been as good. Consequently, the pork prices between countries in much narrower than hog prices would indicate", added Jim Long.
Inside the EU, Spain has by far the largest sow herd and total inventory. Over the last ten years, Spain has had dynamic growth as the integrator model they employ has worked very well relative to independent producer model of Northern Europe. In the last 12 months, the country reported an increase of 5.2% in its live swine inventory. Spain is followed by Ireland and Poland, both with a 4.2% increase, and Denmark (+3.3%).
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-06 15:59:42 | 2025-08-12 16:51:59 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1390 | Two more countries have entered the UN food aid list | The list has expanded to 39 countries around the globe as armed conflicts and severe weather conditions aggravate and prolong food insecurity. |
United Nation's Food and Agriculture Organization announced today that the number of the countries included on the food aid list has increased to 39 in the last 3 months.
Cabo Verde and Senegal were added to the list that now comprises nations from Africa, Middle East and Asia, along with the Carribean presence of Haiti.
After a poor cropping season, 35% of the population of Cabo Verde are estimated to need food assistance, although this figure is expected to drop by more than half in the early summer with the onset of seasonal rainfall. Poor pastoral conditions in northern parts of Senegal are expected to push the number of people estimated to be in need of assistance there to 750,000, according to the quarterly report from FAO's Global Information and Early Warning System.
Chronic conflicts continue to impede access to fields and farming inputs in Iraq and Syria, where this year's harvests are expected to decline further. Conflicts in Nigeria and Libya have led to less demand for meat, one reason behind the drastic drop in incomes for many pastoralist households in the Sahel region, where grazing and water resources are already strained and the ongoing lean season is expected to last longer than usual, mentions the report. In fact, armed conflicts and adverse climate shocks across these areas led to a situation where there was no country exiting the list in a while.
The 39 countries currently in need of external food assistance are Afghanistan, Burkina Faso, Burundi, Cameroon, Cabo Verde, Central African Republic, Chad, Congo, Democratic Republic of the Congo, Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Guinea, Haiti, Iraq, Kenya, Democratic People's Republic of Korea , Lesotho, Liberia, Libya, Madagascar, Malawi, Mali, Mauritania, Mozambique, Myanmar, Niger, Nigeria, Pakistan, Senegal, Sierra Leone, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan, Swaziland, Syria, Uganda, Yemen and Zimbabwe.

(Photo source: FAO)
| 1 | Market | 2018-06-07 16:20:17 | 2025-08-12 18:43:40 | Details Edit Delete | ||
8199 | Two more meat processing plants were authorized to export meat to Taiwan | The National Animal Health and Quality Service (Senacsa) in Paraguay announced in a statement that the Animal and Plant Health Inspection Agency (Aphia) of Taiwan has granted local meat packing plants permission to export meat to the Asian country. |
According to the Senacsa statement, the meat processing plants enabled by Aphia are: Frigorífico Pirayú, which will be able to export pork and Frigorífico Victoria, enabled to ship beef.

The authorization of these refrigerators was given after the conclusion of an exhaustive inspection and evaluation process carried out by Aphia technicians who visited the establishments. The license granted is valid since February 18, 2025.

In this way, Paraguay expands the possibility of continuing to increase the shipment of red protein to Taiwan, a country that has positioned itself as one of its main trading partners. In fact, the Asian country became the largest importer of Paraguayan pork in 2024, increasing its acquisition by 108% compared to 2023. In the aforementioned year, it absorbed 87% of shipments, with a commercial value of USD 29 million.

Regarding beef, Taiwan positioned itself as the second largest buyer in 2024, only behind Chile, with the acquisition of 39,986 tons, which represented USD 197,575,032 in revenue. 5906 | Two-thirds of Australian sheep meat producers are positive about the industry | Nearly half of Australian sheep producers are looking to increase the size of their flocks in the next 12 months, according to the first Sheep Producer Intentions survey. |
The joint report was commissioned by Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) and Australian Wool Innovation (AWI). 3548 | Tyson calls for sustainable protein coalition | The company works to set up the Coalition for Global Protein, a body comprising leaders from the global protein industry, which includes all forms of protein, alongside academia, non-governmental organizations and financial institutions. |
Tyson Foods presented its plan to create a Coalition for Global Protein with a clear objective to increase understanding around the challenges of feeding a growing population with more varied and sustainable protein options; identify new and creative solutions, and activate those solutions through pilot programs.
"We’re focused on uniting the world’s most influential, food-focused stakeholders around a shared purpose to build a future of protein that is sustainable and equitable across global communities – at every link in the supply chain. Igniting transformative change in our food system requires industry-wide collaboration and a willingness to go beyond our businesses through strong commitments and actions," explained John Tyson, Chief Sustainability Officer of Tyson Foods.
The launch of the Coalition for Global Protein comes as livestock production around the world comes under increasing criticism for its contribution to climate change. In the last couple of years, Tyson Foods has made an entry in the alternative protein market, first investing in Beyond Meat, then launching its own plant-based products.
According to a report from US global management consulting firm AT Kearney, by 2040, the majority of the meat consumed by humans (60%) will be derived from cultured meat or plant-based alternatives that look and taste like meat.
| 1 | Industry | 2020-01-23 11:26:08 | 2025-08-13 05:48:00 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4833 | Tyson creates an animal welfare framework for its global operations | The company is evolving its approach to animal welfare by integrating a new welfare framework across its global operations, known as the Five Domains. |
Tyson Foods is ready to integrate a new animal welfare framework, known as the Five Domains, in its global operations. Originally announced in the company’s FY19 Sustainability Report, the transition enables a more robust approach to welfare assessment, informed the American food processor in a press release.
Tyson’s Office of Animal Welfare plays an important role in ensuring the company’s vision for animal welfare becomes a reality: to be the world leader in animal welfare through compassionate care based in sound science. Part of being a leader means being open to creative thinking, innovation, and evolving knowledge and practices. The Five Domains, as devised by Professor David Mellor and colleagues, provides a comprehensive platform that incorporates functional and behavioral components, which considered as a whole, provide an assessment of an animal’s overall mental state, also known as the welfare of the animal.

While Tyson Foods acknowledges the importance of the Five Freedoms welfare framework (freedom from hunger and thirst; freedom from discomfort; freedom from pain injury or disease; freedom to express normal behavior; and freedom from fear and distress) in the development of its animal welfare approach, the company made the strategic decision to transition from the Five Freedoms to the Five Domains last year.

Tyson is now moving ahead with widescale integration of the Five Domains across the enterprise. By adopting the Five Domains, the company’s welfare practices are evolving and allowing the company to identify opportunities for enhancement and examine positive outcomes and behaviors of each animal, therefore providing a better understanding of animal needs and ultimately better welfare outcomes.

“Incorporating the Five Domains into our daily conversations and actions is essential for Tyson Foods to drive continuous improvement in our welfare program and culture throughout our global operations”, said Dr. Ken Opengart, vice president of global animal welfare, Tyson Foods.

The Five Domains

With continuous improvement comes research, learning and the evolution of ideas. The Five Domains provides a platform that allows for a more comprehensive understanding and assessment of welfare outcomes as a result of a range of influences. The Five Domains is a more progressive conceptual animal welfare framework that includes the promotion of positive mental states through four domains – nutrition, physical environment, health and behavioral opportunities, which ultimately contribute to the fifth domain, the mental state of the animal.

“For decades, the Five Freedoms have provided an essential foundation for conceptualizing animals’ welfare needs. As animal welfare science has advanced, however, the importance of promoting positive (physical, behavioral, and mental) states of welfare in addition to minimizing negative states is increasingly recognized”, said Dr. Candace Croney, professor of animal behavior and well-being and director of The Center for Animal Welfare Science, Purdue University. “Incorporation of the Five Domains reflects the leadership mindset needed to facilitate thought processes, actions, and outcome measurements aligned with achieving these goals.”

Strengths of the Five Domains

While the Five Freedoms have been an influential part of animal welfare science for the last 25 years and played a significant role in the development of welfare programs around the world, they primarily focus on negative experiences and states rather than the promotion of positive opportunities. The Five Domains model is specifically designed to capture the complexity of welfare states, facilitate welfare assessments and incorporate growing knowledge of welfare science into practical applications. In addition, the Five Domains are adaptable to each species behavior, biology and ecology.

“The Five Domains model represents the forefront of current efforts to conceptualize and assess animal welfare,” said Dr. Dorothy McKeegan, senior lecturer in animal welfare and ethics at the University of Glasgow. “Tyson’s adoption of the Five Domains represents an admirable commitment to embrace animal welfare improvements in a scientifically sound, evidence-based way.”

Tyson Foods collaborates with many internal and external subject matter experts to utilize ongoing research findings, innovation and engagement to continuously improve the welfare of the animals entrusted to the company’s care. Tyson has an external Animal Welfare Advisory Panel made up of 13 external subject matter experts, an internal Global Animal Welfare Council and 54 specially trained animal welfare specialists embedded within the business who are dedicated to promoting the importance of animal welfare across the company, maintain standards and directly facilitate improvements.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-07-26 08:12:18 | 2025-08-13 04:41:07 | Details Edit Delete |
