5258  Top Butcher Chef contest to be held first time at CARNEXPO Grill 2022  This event, a premiere in the East European market, will take place in Olimp, at Phoenicia Blue View resort at the Black Sea.  <p>CARNEXPO Grill, the most important local gastronomic event, organizes, for the first time, the international Top Butcher Chef competition, between May 5-6, 2022 at Phenicia Blue View in Olimp, in order to promote and develop the butchers' guild in Romania.<br />Top Butcher Chef is the first competition that aims to select the best master butchers, bringing face-to-face teams of professionals from the country and abroad who will go through several competition tests, judged by an international jury, in the fight for the grand trophy: Butcher of Romania.<br />"Much more than a simple competition, Top Butcher Chef is about the art of learning, sharing and innovating through new meat processing techniques designed to contribute to the specialized development of the meat industry. The concept of Top Butcher Chef aims to create an environment in which Romanian butchers try to overcome the current practice of the industry in its various stages of production: general preparation, meat cutting, exhibition and creative use of beef, pork, sheep and poultry products. Through this competition, we want to build a professional community that will generate business opportunities and supports the general trade to benefit from an infusion of creativity and innovation," said Eugen CAPRA, CEO of CARNEXPO Grill.</p> <p>Top Butcher Chef will take place in the most awaited gastronomic event in Romania, CARNEXPO Grill 2022, for three hours, and each competing team will have at its disposal half a carcass of beef, half a carcass of pork, a lamb whole and five chicken carcasses, which you will have to turn into value-added products.<br />The participating teams will be able to provide their own spices, marinades and garnishes to finish the products that will be designed to inspire and exceed the limits. The finished products will then be presented as if they could be marketed in a retail setting. The jury consists of independent referees, selected by the organizers from the most important specialists in the world specialty industry, and will score each team according to technique and skills, workmanship, product innovation, overall finish and presentation.</p> <p>The first edition of the&nbsp;Top Butcher Chef competition is all the more important as it responds to the current challenges regarding the lack of skilled workers in factories and slaughterhouses in Romania. The current crisis of skilled workers in the meat industry is getting worse every year, becoming a deep global problem. The technical and vocational education system in Romania does not meet the demand on the local labor market. So far, Romania do not have vocational schools in the public educational system to prepare new generations for this industry, in practice vocational training is done at work. "The organization of Top Butcher Chef within CARNEXPO Grill is just the first step we take in collaboration with Agrofood Association, a partnership that aims to establish the first National Butchery Team of Romania and the Professional School of Butchers, social-educational training projects and education of future butchers. In this way, we invite all partners and specialists in the meat industry to join this bold project that brings concrete solutions for the very existence of the butcher business in Romania ", added Eugen Capra.<br />With over 15 years of experience in promoting the meat and meat products sector in Romania, CARNEXPO Grill specialists are launching new challenges for the meat industry with which it aims to prepare new generations of specialists to ensure the future of the Romanian meat sector.<br />For more details on enrolling in the first edition of Top Butcher Chef, please contact CARNEXPO Grill representative:<br />Dorinel NICULAE - 0728086130, office@industriacarnii.ro</p>    Events 2022-01-28 12:19:39  2025-08-13 09:26:23  Details Edit Delete
7120  Top European rights court upholds Belgian ban on kosher slaughter  Two of Belgium’s three regions banned slaughter without stunning in 2017 and 2018, saying that the practice was cruel to animals.  <p style="font-weight: 400;">The top rights court in Europe has ruled that&nbsp;bans of ritual slaughter&nbsp;in parts of Belgium can stand, ending the hopes of Jewish advocates who had said the bans were an unfair infringement on Jewish practice.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Two of Belgium&rsquo;s three regions banned slaughter without stunning in 2017 and 2018, saying that the practice was cruel to animals. Stunning prior to slaughter is barred in both shechitah, Jewish ritual slaughter, and zabiha, the Muslim method for slaughtering animals for food.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">In recent years, opposition to shechitah and zabiha has widened beyond animal-rights activists as right-wing parties began promoting bans as part of their agenda around reducing the presence in society of Islam, and in some cases also Judaism.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The Court of the European Union dealt Jewish community leaders a major defeat by&nbsp;upholding the bans&nbsp;in 2021. Israel&rsquo;s ambassador to Belgium called the ruling "catastrophic and a blow to Jewish life in Europe". But last year, the EU&rsquo;s antisemitism envoy invited Jews and Muslims to discuss meat production with EU officials, in what some of the Jewish attendees characterized as progress toward ensuring religious freedom.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Now, the European Court of Human Rights, which is not affiliated with the EU, has dashed those hopes, upholding the bans in a ruling that closely comports with the 2021 EU ruling.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"The protection of animal welfare constitutes an ethical value to which contemporary democratic societies attach increasing importance and that should be taken into account when assessing restrictions placed on the external manifestation of religious convictions", the court&rsquo;s seven judges wrote in their opinion, which was published in French.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The ruling does not apply to all of Europe but is seen as an important precedent for other countries that might consider bans on ritual slaughter.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"Restrictions on fundamental aspects of Jewish religious freedom of expression, coupled with a background of massive increases in antisemitic attacks on Jewish communities, lead us to seriously consider whether Jews have a future in Europe", Rabbi Ariel Muzikant, head of the European Jewish Congress, said in a statement.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">"We are already seeing attempts across Europe to follow this Belgian ban, now sadly legitimized by the ECHR", Muzicant added. "Jewish communities in Europe, now more than ever, need the protection of national governments and pan-European organizations to ensure that thousands of years of Jewish life on this continent do not come to an abrupt end".</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">The bans added Belgium to a number of EU countries where&nbsp;ritual slaughter&nbsp;is illegal, including Denmark, Sweden, Finland, Estonia and Slovenia. In 2011, the Netherlands briefly joined the list, but the Dutch Senate reversed the ban in 2012, citing freedom of worship. Poland also outlawed ritual slaughter in 2013 but has since scaled back the ban to include only meat for export.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Advocates of the customs say that in addition to being required under religious law, they result in no greater suffering to animals than mechanized slaughter methods with higher malfunction rates and less attention to individual animals.</p>    Retail adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2024-02-20 00:10:01  2025-08-13 14:42:29  Details Edit Delete

4645  TOP NEWS  of the week 19-25 April 2021  <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>BOLIVIA: Ban beef exports amid supply fears, rising prices</strong></li> </ul> <p>Bolivia has temporarily banned exports of beef in order to guarantee supply for its domestic market and to prevent prices from rising, according to Reuters. The rise in the price of beef, considered a staple for Bolivian families, has generated tension in recent days between wholesalers and retailers and has led union leaders to warn that it could lead to strikes and markets closures.<br />Bolivia has the capacity to export about 8,000 tonnes of beef, mainly to other markets around the Andean region and increasingly in recent years to China, government data show.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>BRAZIL: Meatpackers explore wheat as feed alternative as corn prices rise</strong></li> </ul> <p>Large Brazilian meatpackers are turning to wheat as they try to fend off a rise in the cost of corn, the main livestock feed ingredient, meat lobby ABPA said. Meatpacking giants JBS and BRF have said they will buy winter crops such as wheat, triticale and barley to use as livestock feed.<br />High prices and delays in Brazil&rsquo;s second corn crop have pressured meatpackers&rsquo; margins, leading some companies to turn to Paraguay and Argentina for supplies.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>CHINA: Hong Kong suspends import of poultry products from bird flu-affected areas in Poland, Vietnam</strong></li> </ul> <p>Hong Kong's food safety authority decided to suspend the import of poultry meat and products from bird flu-affected areas in Poland and Vietnam.<br />The Center for Food Safety (CFS) of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) government's Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said that this was in view of notifications from the General Veterinary Inspectorate of Poland about outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N8 avian influenza in the K?pi?ski District and Ostrowski District of Wielkopolskie Region, Elbl?ski District of Warmi?sko-mazurskie Region, Sierpecki District of Mazowieckie Region and Malborski District of Pomorskie Region in Poland.<br />Another notification was from the World Organization for Animal Health about outbreaks of highly pathogenic H5N6 avian influenza in Th&aacute;i Nguy&ecirc;n Province, H&agrave; Giang Province, Y&ecirc;n B&aacute;i Province, H?i D??ng Province, L?ng S?n Province, H&agrave; T?nh Province and ??k L?k Province in Vietnam.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>CHINA: ASF continues to affect the pork industry across Asia</strong></li> </ul> <p>In 2021, ASF remains the single most significant factor affecting the meat sector in China across production, imports and consumption, two and a half years after it first entered China in mid-2018.<br />China has made significant investments in ASF vaccine development, but none have yet reached the stage of commercial development and numerous trial vaccines show mixed results. Vietnam has also been investing in vaccine development and testing.<br />While China&rsquo;s pork production recovery began in Q4 2020, it is expected to take several years due to the extensive loss of pig numbers. Current forecasts suggest that China pork production could range between 45&ndash;55 million tonnes carcase weight equivalent (cwe) by 2025, likely still down on pre-ASF production levels at a five-year average around 55 million tonnes cwe (GIRA).</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>EU:Copa Cogeca responds to Greenpeace latest report</strong></li> </ul> <p>Italian friends, stop promoting your salamis and other parmesan. This approach is sadly damaging to the European public debate as it feeds a kind of populism against the work put in place by the Commission and EU farmers to constantly improve the sustainability of EU agriculture. <br />Jerzy Wierzbicki - Chairman of Copa-Cogeca</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>EU:Pork exports continue to grow</strong></li> </ul> <p>European Union (EU) pork exports reached record highs last year and the export boom will continue in early 2021. Business in China continues to have the highest priority compared to other sales countries, while the Philippines are ranked second among the most important EU customers for the first time.<br />According to preliminary information from the EU Commission, the 27 member states sold a total of 1.02 million to of pork, including meat by-products, to third countries in January and February; that was around 210,000 to or a good quarter more than in the same period of the previous year. The increase in EU export volumes was mainly due to the booming pork deliveries to China. Compared to the first two months of 2020, these increased by 134,000 to or 27.4% to 622,000 to. Business in China thus accounted for a good 60% of all EU exports. The relatively strongest increase in exports of EU pork sales to third countries was with deliveries to the Philippines, with an increase of 133% to 56,000 to.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>NETHERLANDS: Drastic decrese in slaaughter pigs export</strong></li> </ul> <p>In the first three months of 2021, the Netherlands exported 190,322 pigs for slaughter, that being a decrease of 142,000 animals. In the same period last year there were exported 332,201 pigs. This is a consequence of the limited export to Germany. Exports here fell sharply as a result of the corona-related reduced slaughtering in German slaughterhouses and the effects of the ASF outbreaks in wild boars in eastern Germany.<br />In the first three months of the current year, 223,541 more slaughter pigs were hooked in the Netherlands than a year ago. On the one hand, this is the result of lower exports and, on the other hand, the year 2021 began with a pig congestion. 4659  TOP NEWS  of the week 26 April - 2 May 2021  <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>ARGENTINE: The government meets with meatpacking companies to renew the agreement for cheap cuts of meat</strong></li> </ul> <p>The government's concern about the price of meat grows.&nbsp;Cuts in March in butcher shops had a significant rise of 7.1%, according to the Institute for the Promotion of Argentine Beef (IPCVA), which represents an annual increase of 75.1%, compared to March 2020.&nbsp;In search of stabilizing prices, the Government has already announced changes in the retail marketing of meat, which should be done in pieces of 32 kilos maximum, and next period it will report a new program of cuts of meat at Popular Prices.&nbsp; The agreement would once again be signed by the same actors, the main one being the Consortium of Argentine Meat Exporters (ABC), which accounts for 80% of the market.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>BELGIUM: Pig industry launches new single standard for qualitative and tasty pork with BePork</strong></li> </ul> <p>On 1 January 2021,&nbsp;Belpork&nbsp;vzw&nbsp;launched the renewed&nbsp;BePork&nbsp;quality standard.&nbsp; This new, generic quality system, an amalgamation of Certus and&nbsp;CodiplanPLUS, provides a response to current industry needs in addition to uniting all the operators in the pig industry.&nbsp;Belpork&nbsp;vzw&nbsp;is an interprofessional organisation, with national coverage, and was founded in 2000.&nbsp;All the operators in the pig industry are represented.&nbsp; So&nbsp;it is an initiative of the industry, for the industry.&nbsp; The association&rsquo;s mission is to promote the quality of Belgian pork in a sustainable way, with innovative projects and through the management of quality systems.&nbsp; As such, the association creates added value for the promotion of Belgian pork.&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>CAMBODIA: Frozen meat imports ban from India over COVID-19</strong></li> </ul> <p>Cambodia imposed a ban on the imports of frozen meat and meat products from India in further efforts to prevent the spread of COVID-19 in the Southeast Asian country, said Kun Nhim, director-general of Cambodia's General Department of Customs and Excise (GDCE).&nbsp; The ban took effect immediately and until further notice, he said in a statement, adding that the temporary suspension came after India reported a sharp spike in COVID-19 cases.<br />Nhim also advised customs officials to spray disinfectant on transport vehicles and the outer packaging of other products that have been sourced from India.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>CHINA: Improving genetics of its pigs so they&rsquo;re fatter and eat less</strong></li> </ul> <p>China will work to improve the genetics of its hog herd and other livestock in the coming decade with the aim of breeding animals that produce more meat and -- at the same time - consume less grains.<br />Sow herd productivity is about 30% lower than in developed countries and dairy cows produce only 80% of the milk than their peers in some leading markets, Shi Jianzhong, an official with the agriculture ministry&rsquo;s National Livestock and Poultry Genetic Resources Committee told reporters. China has to rely on overseas stock to produce white-feathered broiler chickens, he said.<br />The drive to improve livestock genetics is part of China&rsquo;s goal of&nbsp;relying less&nbsp;on imports to feed its massive and increasingly affluent population. However, the nation will continue to bring in animals from overseas to improve its domestic stock to catch up faster with advanced countries, said Chen Yaosheng, an official at the ministry&rsquo;s National Pig Genetic Improvement Program.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>ITALY: Parma Han exports of &euro; 260 million</strong></li> </ul> <p>Prosciutto di Parma closes 2020 with a reduction in production: around 8,700,000 branded hams were produced, down by 2.2%, while the thighs started for production were 7,800,000 down by 10% compared to 2019. 2020 showed a general contraction of the raw ham market. In this context, sales of Parma in Italy in the modern distribution channel decreased by 5.6%, while exports managed to contain the crisis at least in part with a decline of 3% and 2,500,000 Parma hams exported.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>SCOTLAND: lamb prices 50% above five-year average</strong></li> </ul> <p>Although prices for old season lambs have dipped back from the record prices reported in autumn and winter, they are still 43% higher than last year according to the latest market commentary from Quality Meat Scotland (QMS).<br />Iain Macdonald, QMS Senior Economics Analyst, explains: &ldquo; In the third week of April, prices for old season lambs have dipped back from highs above &pound;3.10/kg at Scottish marts between Easter and Ramadan, but still averaged around &pound;3.05/kg. This would put them 43% higher than last year, closer to 50% above their five-year average, and even 17% above their early season peak from May 2020. One factor supporting the lamb market in 2021 has been the early marketing pattern this season, which has seen fewer lambs sold at Scottish marts on a weekly basis than during the August to December period, when in a more normal season it would be the opposite.&rdquo;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>UK:&nbsp;Delivery continues to drive takeaway growth during Lockdown 3</strong></li> </ul> <p>With Britain spending the first quarter of the year in its third lockdown, consumers continued to turn to takeaways. According to Kantar data, takeaways* were up 79% in the 12 weeks ending 21 Mar 21, when compared to the same period a year earlier.<br /> Despite this increase in takeaways, it hasn&rsquo;t been enough to compensate for losses in other parts of the out of home market. Over the same period, eating out dropped by 92% while on-the-go consumption occasions declined by 46%. Takeaways haven&rsquo;t fully compensated for these losses, instead the area that&rsquo;s gained has been retail grocery, with in-home occasions up 21% during that 12-week period.&nbsp;Consumers are still more likely to collect their orders in person (including the use of drive-thrus), accounting for 74% of takeaway trips in the 12 w/e 21 Mar 21. However, deliveries are now much more important, representing a 26% share of takeaway trips, up from just 15% two years ago. This is due to the&nbsp;phenomenal growth rate in deliveries, which increased by 319% year-on-year over that 12-week period.</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <ul> <li><strong>UK: Noticeable drop in English pig abattoirs</strong></li> </ul> <p>The long-term trend of declining pig abattoir numbers in England has accelerated recently, according to AHDB. The latest figures show that just 93 slaughterhouses killed pigs in 2020, 10 fewer than in 2019 and 22 fewer than in 2018. The number is now half what it was in the year 2000. The industry continues to consolidate, with the 11 largest plants (each of which slaughtered over 100,000 head) accounting for 93% of total slaughter, up from 92% the year before.</p>    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2021-05-03 09:02:23  2025-08-13 11:58:23  Details Edit Delete

2106  Top ten largest markets for online grocery shopping to witness an annual growth of 20%  The combined growth is estimated at $227 billion, with the UK, France, Germany and Spain leading setting the trends in the EU market.  <p>Ten leading global online grocery markets are predicted to experience combined growth of $227bn, at an annual rate of 20%, by 2023, according to new figures unveiled by IGD.<br />As the global leader in grocery eCommerce, China will grow at a 31% CAGR over the next five years, taking market share from 3.8% to 11.2%. Over the next five years, the Chinese online grocery market will grow by the same size as the entire combined market of all ten countries in 2018.</p> <p>IGD also forecasts extensive growth in the US with the online set to more than double its market share, driven by the rapid expansion of pick-up points, Instacart&rsquo;s expansion and integration of businesses such as Shipt and Home Chef. Market share will grow to 3.5%, creating an additional $37bn opportunity for American retailers and manufacturers.</p> <p>IGD&rsquo;s research shows that around the globe, online grocery market growth is being driven by the twin enablers of rapidly evolving shopper expectations and exciting tech innovations. Shopper expectations of price, quality, choice, convenience, speed, personalisation, health, information and empowerment are changing fast, and the online channel is well placed to deliver against these.</p> <p>Looking at the online growth opportunity in Europe, Jon Wright, Head of Retail Insight EMEA at IGD, said: &ldquo;We&rsquo;re anticipating continued online growth opportunities across mature Western European markets. In the UK, France, Germany and Spain we forecast above market average growth rates for online grocery retailing, all growing market share. It provides a significant growth opportunity as retailers and manufacturers in the region invest in personalisation, ease and convenience and combining online and offline to meet a range of shopper needs.&rdquo;<br />Asian markets such as China, Japan and South Korea will witness a double-digit share for online grocery.<br />&ldquo;We&rsquo;re seeing significant market share penetration in these three countries. They lead the way globally in terms of market share, and in 2023 all three will be nearing double-digit share for online grocery, with South Korea over 14%. The acceleration of online and offline integration has been accentuated by partnerships between eCommerce players and bricks and mortar retailers. Physical retailers in China, having recognised the importance of the online and digital channel, are collaborating with eCommerce and delivery partners to offer more targeted ranges, promotions and expanding their omnichannel presence. It&rsquo;s for this reason China comes out on top globally with value growth of $145.4bn predicted by 2023.&rdquo;, commented IGD Asia&rsquo;s Programme Director Shirley Zhu.</p> <p>Addressing US online growth, IGD&rsquo;s North American Programme Director Stewart Samuel said: &ldquo;The US online grocery market has experienced a rapid pace of growth this year, driven by expanding services and new entrants. We&rsquo;re seeing a major focus on offering same-day delivery with many companies partnering with Instacart to scale up quickly, including Aldi. Target acquired Shipt, enabling it to move its same-day delivery plans forward by about two years.<br />Plated and Home Chef meal kit companies were acquired by Albertsons and Kroger respectively, enabling them to offer a multi-channel solution in the category, and we&rsquo;re also seeing a strong pipeline of innovation including Walmart&rsquo;s automated picking warehouse, Alphabot, Kroger&rsquo;s partnership with Ocado and Albertsons&rsquo; online organic and natural foods marketplace. With all the developments in the market, and the rate at which retailers are entering the channel and expanding their offers, growth for the next five years is likely to be strong.&rdquo;</p> <table> <tbody> <tr> <td rowspan="2" width="135"> <p><strong>Country</strong></p> </td> <td colspan="2" width="154"> <p><strong>Online grocery market size $bn</strong></p> </td> <td rowspan="2" width="77"> <p><strong>Value growth $bn</strong></p> </td> <td rowspan="2" width="77"> <p><strong>CAGR</strong></p> </td> <td colspan="2" width="137"> <p><strong>Online grocery channel share %</strong></p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="74"> <p><strong>2018</strong></p> </td> <td width="80"> <p><strong>2023</strong></p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>2018</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>2023</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>China</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$50.9</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$196.3</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$145.4</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>31.0%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>3.8%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>11.2%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>U.S.</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$23.9</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$59.5</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$35.6</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>20.0%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>1.6%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>3.5%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>Japan</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$31.9</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$46.5</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$14.6</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>7.8%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>7.1%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>9.9%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>U.K.</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$14.6</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$22.1</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$7.5</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>8.7%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>6.0%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>7.9%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>South Korea</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$9.9</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$21.3</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+11.4</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>16.5%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>8.3%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>14.2%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>France</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$11.6</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$17.2</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$5.6</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>8.2%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>4.5%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>6.0%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>Australia</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$2.1</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$4.2</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$2.2</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>15.3%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>2.1%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>3.7%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>Germany</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$1.3</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$3.8</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$2.5</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>23.2%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>0.5%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>1.2%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>Canada</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$0.8</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$2.1</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$1.3</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>21.0%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>0.8%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>1.8%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p>Spain</p> </td> <td width="74"> <p>$0.9</p> </td> <td width="80"> <p>$2.0</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>+$1.1</p> </td> <td width="77"> <p>17.9%</p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>0.7%</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>1.4%</p> </td> </tr> <tr> <td width="135"> <p><strong>TOTAL</strong></p> </td> <td width="74"> <p><strong>$147.9</strong></p> </td> <td width="80"> <p><strong>$374.9</strong></p> </td> <td width="77"> <p><strong>$227.0</strong></p> </td> <td width="77"> <p><strong>20.4%</strong></p> </td> <td width="65"> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> <td width="72"> <p>&nbsp;</p> </td> </tr> </tbody> </table> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p> <p>&nbsp;</p>    Retail 2018-10-26 15:00:30  2025-08-12 13:16:53  Details Edit Delete

3664  Tough competition between Asian countries for Brazilian poultry imports  Besides China, there is increased demand for Brazilian chicken meat from South Korea, the Philippines, and Singapore.  <p>Brazil has exported 384,400 tonnes of poultry in February, up by 10% from the volume exported in February last year. February exports generated revenues of $553.8 million, 5.2% higher than the figure reported in the same month of 2019. Since the beginning of the year, poultry shipments abroad reached a volume of 672,200 tonnes, according to data released by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).<br />China accounted for 17.5% of the Brazilian chicken meat exported this year and there are certain signs of increasing competition between Asian countries for poultry imports. South Korea was the destination of 17,500 tonnes in the first two months of this year, a number that exceeds sales by 12.5% in the first two months of last year. The Philippines increased their purchases by 104%, with 14,700 tonnes, while Singapore increased its Brazilian poultry imports by 49%, with 18,300 tonnes between January and February.<br />"Asia has consolidated itself as the main destination for imports of chicken meat from Brazil. This is a favorable fact, especially when we find that the average price practiced in sales to this region of the globe is higher than the general average of exports," pointed out Ricardo Santin, ABPA's executive director.<br />Libya had the highest growth-ratio in imports of Brazilian poultry (370%), with 16,300 tonnes received in the first two months of the year. The EU market was the destination for 40,200 tonnes of poultry, an increase of 14% compared to January-February 2019.</p>    Industry 2020-03-06 10:47:36  2025-08-13 14:42:41  Details Edit Delete
4491  Tough times for British meat exporters  30 hours added to complete paperwork and 60% increase in costs of shipping.  <p>British firms are now registering EU businesses to bypass the export problems, warns Nick Allen, CEO of the British Meat Processors Association. Some of the reasons for this are the new compliance rules that appeared after the UK's exit from the bloc and additional costs for shipping.<br />"The new system is adding an average of 30 hours into the process, and the costs to ship these loads are now around 60% higher than last year. This is caused by a combination of additional charges from HMRC and their French counterpart, extra customs agents&rsquo; and veterinary charges to process the paperwork, and haulage charges that have risen four-fold due to delays at the border. On top of that, freight insurers are raising premiums or simply refusing to insure loads,&rdquo; explained Mr. Allen using France as an example of a destination for British meat products exported to the EU.<br />The complications that appeared in the shipping process created a downward spiral for meat exporters, especially for the small and medium companies. Consignments of British meat heading to customers on the continent are still below 50% of normal volume, with some companies doing no exports at all. And this inability to export the parts of the carcase that Brits don&rsquo;t buy means that meat processing becomes less profitable which will eventually hit livestock prices for British farmers, according to BMPA experts.<br />The system between the UK and EU must be revised to eliminate some artificial barriers appeared in trade, said BMPA. "It&rsquo;s going to require much more commercial co-operation between businesses as well as political co-operation between the UK and the EU to re-negotiate and re-design the system from top to bottom. What we are sure of is that whatever is being discussed by Michael Gove and Maros Sefcovic to ease trade barriers with Northern Ireland should also apply to trade with the EU", concluded the association.</p>    Industry 2021-02-22 05:45:44  2025-08-13 02:39:44  Details Edit Delete
2416  Tough year for Brazilian beef? Doesn't look so  The South American country reported beef exports of 1.354 thousand tonnes.  <p>Brazil has set a new record in beef exports reaching a total of 1.354 thousand tonnes in 2018. The record occurred even in a year of corn crop break (grain feed animals account for ~30% of the slaughter). <br />China was the main destination for Brazilian beef exports, with 322,000 tonnes, followed by Hong Kong (277,000) and Egypt (171,000). Top 10 markets for beef export also include countries such as Chile (114,000), Iran (84,000), Saudi Arabia (41,900), UAE (35,500), Italy (28,800), Philippines (26,500) and Libany (18,200). The rest of the world accounts for 233,200 tonnes in last year's Brazilian beef exports. The total exceeded the previous year figures by 148,000 tonnes.</p>    Industry 2019-01-11 04:37:20  2025-08-13 14:45:12  Details Edit Delete
4528  Tougher measures taken in China against ASF illegal vaccines  Local governments were asked to identify any positive samples of the virus and report any strains with artificial gene exclusions to provincial veterinary authorities as soon as possible.  <p>China's Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs announced this week that it is going to adopt severe measures for illegal production and sale of African swine fever (ASF) vaccines. The country works hard to rebuild its pig herd after an ongoing ASF outbreak that wiped out half of the pig inventory. However, the use of illicit vaccines has caused a new chronic form of African swine fever, which causes a debilitating condition that can reduce pig production, but is more difficult to detect.<br />The ministry said identification and testing should be strengthened and asked local governments to identify any positive samples of the virus and report any strains with artificial gene exclusions to provincial veterinary authorities as soon as possible.<br />All locations should increase the punishment for illegal activities related to fake vaccines, with any suspicion of criminal cases promptly referred to the judiciary, officials announced according to Reuters.<br />Pharmaceutical companies would be fined the maximum amount, their operating licenses revoked and those prohibited from producing veterinary products for life. Reports from the local authorities are expected on June 30 and November 30. Recent outbreaks of "classsic" ASF virus have been reported in the provinces of n Sichuan, Hubei and Yunnan and several mutations of the virus have been reported by researchers in the first two months of 2021.</p>    Industry 2021-03-10 07:27:39  2025-08-13 07:48:41  Details Edit Delete
844  Trade agreements will have a big impact on beef industry this year -Rabobank report  The global beef market is going to reshape the face of the industry as TPP and Mercosur/EU deals are ready to start.  <p>A number of trade agreements, such as the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) and a proposed Mercosur/EU trade agreement, look set to start having an impact on global beef trade in 2018, announced a report of Rabobank.<br />In a few months, the analysts expect that global beef exports to show a growth for this commodity on different markets. The events are doubled by an increase in blockchain solution developed by food and tech companies in response to changing consumer preferences. "While many of the early applications have been driven by the desire to increase traceability and transparency, with a focus on food safety, opportunities do exist further up the supply chain", says Angus Gidley-Baird, Senior Analyst &ndash; Animal Protein.<br />From his point of view, blockchain is superior to current solutions when it comes to sharing genetic traits, making it simpler to track productive performance. A chain including, among others, the producer, feedlot, farmer, and genetic organisation would be able to share performance and verify breeding values, which is all transferred in real-time in the transaction.</p> <p>On the other hand, the classic trade will be encouraged by the signing of TPP agreement in March with gains predicted for beef-exporting countries as Australia, New Zealand, Mexico, and Canada as tariffs on imports are going to diminish on markets like Japan, Chile, Vietnam, and Peru.<br />Mercosur/EU trade agreement is another subject meant to attract attention from the bank's analysts as a new proposal to allow Mercosur countries to send 99,000 tonnes of beef to the EU at a lower tariff level has been tabled as part of the negotiations. "This is a significant volume, given total EU beef imports over the last couple of years have been between 204,000 tonnes and 270,000 tonnes. Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay are already the EU&rsquo;s main suppliers (together accounting for 63% of total EU imports)&mdash;Brazil alone accounted for 107,000 tonnes in 2017", explained Rabobank's experts.<br />Meantime, inside sources mentioned that the Mercosur Member States are actually targeting a volume of 150,000 tonnes in the negotiations.<br />China is another market expected to increase the volume of beef imports, as the Beijing officials just granted access for chilled beef from Argentina, imports from two facilities in Belarus and also signed a protocol for importing beef from France and the UK. Live-cattle imports could also become a characteristic of the Chinese market in the years to come as in January registered its first the first boatload of live cattle exports from northern Australia.<br />The US is a market where beef production is set to increase this year following a growth by more than 3%, or an additional 360,000 tonnes at the end of 2017. At the start of 2018, with updated cattle numbers, favourable market conditions, and given that large area of the US are in drought, production increases have been revised by up to about 5%, or some 700,000 tonnes, shows the Rabobank report.</p>    Market 2018-02-25 07:10:44  2025-08-13 08:24:10  Details Edit Delete
3656  Trade and food promotion impacted by the coronavirus outbreaks  Several large expo shows have been canceled or delayed due to outbreaks reported in different countries.  <p>It is not only exporters that are hit by coronavirus but also promoters of food and trade fair organizers. In the last couple of weeks, two major events were canceled or delayed due to outbreaks reported in different parts of the world.<br />Japan Management Association, the organizer of FOODEX JAPAN 2020, has officially taken the decision to cancel the event, originally scheduled to be held at Makuhari Messe from March 10 - 13, 2020.<br />This decision has been made based on the announcement of the Japanese government on February 26th. The Japanese government requests event organizers to cancel huge events held in Japan to prevent further infection from the Coronavirus (COVID-19).<br />In Greece, organizers of the Food Expo trade fair decided to move the event, initially scheduled in March, to 16-18 May in order to avoid any new coronavirus outbreaks. "The surge in cases of the new Covid-19 strain of coronavirus in Greece together with announcement from the Greek Ministry of Health regarding the cancellation of all outdoor meetings and events in the country, have created exceptional and unforeseen conditions that make the successful outcome of the upcoming FOOD EXPO trade show incredibly precarious," announced the organizers.<br />Two other shows, Alimentaria Barcelona (20-23 April) and Interpack (Dusseldorf, 7-13 May) are still on course but any change in Spain and Germany may lead to the cancellation or the delay of these events.</p>    Events 2020-03-05 07:35:18  2025-08-11 15:23:23  Details Edit Delete
