1017 Brexit represents a danger to British poultry industry The shortage of labour in the sector could have a bigger impact than an avian flu outbreak.
The departure of Great Britain from the European Union can turn into a hard hit for the poultry industry in the country, claims the director of one of the important companies in the sector.

Patrick Hook, director of P D Hook Hatcheries, is worried about the impact that a shortage of labour it will have on the businesses in the next few years. The effects are felt even now as many of the European workers in the industry are heading home.
"Here at the moment we have got about 5 or 6 vacancies, but as a business, we have got about 50 to 60 vacancies across the UK that we cannot fill", said the director of PD Hook Hatcheries, quoted by Farming UK magazine.
His company is the UK's largest independent chick supplier for the broiler sector with a capacity of 10 million day-old chicks and growing six million chickens a week from its regional sites in Oxfordshire, Yorkshire, Lincolnshire, East Anglia, Devon, Scotland and Wales.
At this point, P D Hook Hatcheries raised the salaries above the minimum and national living wage but still can't find workers to replace the missing workforce.

"Even if we have to put wages up - which I think we will have to - the reality is I still don't think that will attract domestic UK labour. The labour crisis, and not having those skilled permanent people available to us from the European Union, is a bigger threat to us as a business and industry than avian influenza. That is a fact", declared Patrick Hook for a BBC show.
The rate of non-UK labourers in the broiler and egg sectors is at about 60%, according to a survey conducted by British Egg Industry Council.
    Industry 2018-03-29 07:00:11 2025-08-04 18:05:44 Details Edit Delete
1018 Prices for red meat and cattle are on the rise in Turkey Turkey's 2017 imports have reached $1.3 billion but the domestic products are getting more expensive.
Turkey's plan to achieve self-sufficiency on red meat is far from being completed. Despite the fact that the government allowed imports of cattle and meat worth $1.3 billion to respond to a increased demand, the prices for domestic products are still rising at a pace of 20% for the live animals.
A statistical report released by the Turkish Statistical Institute revealed that the domestic cattle prices rose by 20.4% in 2017 and the price of domestic sheep increased by 21.2% in the same period, while the price for angora goats jumped by 20.5%.
The price for a kilogram of beef meat rose from $9.73 to $9.93 during the last year. Since July 2017, the Milk and Meat Board was granted to import 500,000 heads of cattle, 475,000 heads of sheep and goat, 75,000 MT fresh or chilled beef and 20,000 MT frozen quarter carcass. This decision is valid until the end of 2018 for cattle, sheep, goat and beef imports, while permission for carcass meat imports was valid until the end of last year, informs Hurriyet Daily News.
In November, the same authority signed a deal to sell cheaper red meat to two supermarket chains in a bid to ease rising meat prices in Turkey.
    Market 2018-03-29 07:01:27 2025-08-06 09:24:42 Details Edit Delete
1019 Slight increase in UK's poultry meat production UK produced 1.8 million tons of poultry meat in 2017, with an increase of 1% year-over-year or 13,600 tons, according to data released by Defra and analyzed by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

Broiler chicken production accounted for a share of 85% of UK's total poultry meat production. In 2017, it increased by 2% or 35,800 compared to the previous year, reaching 1.6 million tons.

The number of slaughtered broiler chickens reached 1.03 million last year, with a year-over-year increase of 4%. On the other hand, there was a decline in the number of boiling fowl of 6% in the same period, totaling 53,300 birds.

Broiler chick placings have risen by 3% during 2017 to 1,047.2 million. Furthermore, they reported strong year-on-year increases also in January and February this year.

AHDB says turkey meat production reported a decrease of 11% in 2017 compared to the previous year, totaling 146,600 tons. The number of slaughtered turkeys also declined by 2% in the same period, reaching 13.1 million birds. Furthermore, for the first time in five years, the average liveweight of a slaughtered turkey fell below 13 kg to 12.7 kg/bird. Duck production increased by 4% (1,000 tonnes) on-the-year, to 30,600 tonnes.

So far in 2018, according to AHDB, chicken has performed strongly in the supermarkets, somewhat bucking the trend of other proteins. In the 12 weeks ending 25 February, there were 18% more promotions on chicken which has helped support an increase in volume sold.
    Industry 2018-03-29 11:34:25 2025-08-06 06:29:44 Details Edit Delete

The system replaces electric stunning and will be operational this spring.
“As we grow our business to meet consumer and customer demand for wholesome, nutritious, affordable animal protein, we continuously explore enhancements that position us as an industry leader in both animal welfare and protein production,” said Claudecir Pagnussatto, plant general manager at London. “Our new CAS system will help reduce handling stress with chickens, resulting in a higher-quality, more consistent product.”

While both electric and CAS stunning systems are approved, proven and acceptable for humane poultry harvesting, a growing number of consumers and customers are expressing a desire for CAS systems at poultry facilities. Cargill was a pioneer in the use of CAS at a U.S. turkey processing facility more than a decade ago.

“Cargill is committed to ensuring the highest standards of animal welfare are maintained and believes all food animals deserve respect and dignity prior to harvesting. We have led the way in many areas of animal welfare,” said Dr. Stephanie Cottee, Cargill’s global head of poultry welfare based in London, Ontario. “We were the first to install third-party remote video auditing at our harvest plants to ensure our animal welfare program is properly implemented.

“For the past two years, we have been named to the second highest international company ranking tier by the UK-based Business Benchmark for Farm Animal Welfare. 1026 3.5 million dollars raised to reinvent meat in a lab Wild Type, a US startup, is planning to use stem cell to replicate meat at an industrial level. The first test is on salmon.
A diplomat (Justin Kolbec) and a cardiologist (Arye Elfenbein) have launched a startup that could shake the whole meat industry in the future.
The co-founders of Wild Type are hoping to develop a procedure that can be used to replicate real meat in a laboratory with the help of tissue engineering, stem cell biology, and cell development. The company just raised $3.5 million from different investors to develop this program.
The idea is different from other clean-meat products (lab grown substitutes of meat) that are based on plant cells, like Impossible Foods' Impossible Burger.
Instead of focusing on replicating the exact type of every animal protein included in our diets, Wild Type wants to use the common heritage of all the animals to develop their product, reports Tech Crunch magazine. “We didn’t want to build a tool that could just be used for beef, or a specific type of chicken, or a specific fish,” explained Kolbeck.
The company wants to use the seed round to invest in scaling up its cellular growth infrastructure, lowering the cost of its meat while also increasing its manufacturing capability.
The first product that could be produced by Wild Type is a minced salmon meat that could be used in say a spicy salmon sushi roll, where the meat is mixed with sauce and smaller quantities are needed.
    Technology 2018-03-30 10:33:48 2025-08-05 17:41:53 Details Edit Delete

1028 The outlook for global poultry trade looks turbulent A Rabobank report on poultry mentions a big shake-up in terms of global trade with Brazil being the most affected producer due to the weak-flesh investigation.
The poultry industry has begun the year with great expectations as the reasonable price levels and margins and a fewer avian influenza (AI) outbreaks were registered in 2018 compared with last year.
Still, the outlook on global poultry trade has changed rapidly in the first quarter of this year and the industry can prepare itself for the biggest shake-up in many years, according to a Rabobank report.

"In the coming months, the global poultry market is set to go through turbulent times, especially due to ongoing restrictions because of AI, the weak-flesh investigation in Brazil, and recent temporary restrictions on exports to the EU for one of Brazil’s leading exporters, as well as the pending ban on stunning for exported products into Saudi Arabia", says Nan-Dirk Mulder, Senior Analyst – Animal Protein at Rabobank.

Other potential obstacles include the anti-dumping investigation into Brazilian imports by Chinese authorities, and NAFTA renegotiations, which could potentially shake up North American poultry trade later this year, mentions the report.

Brazil is in danger to lose an important market share in Saudi Arabia and Europe while Russia, Poland or Ukraine could partially fill that void but without covering at the full extent the Brazilian poultry exports to these areas.

EU trade restrictions will affect breast-meat prices while the Saudi Arabia standards will influence the whole-bird market, believe the analysts. Along with those stand the China/Brazil dispute and NAFTA renegotiations, events that could have a significant impact on the dark meat market.
Russia and Thailand, producers who are now confronted with oversupply after industry expansion, will try to capture some of Brazil’s lost market share in global trade. At the same time, regional industries like the ones in Mexico, South Africa or Europe will develop further encouraged by an increase in prices for the poultry products delivered on the domestic markets.

Meantime AI pressure is considered to be significant, but not at the same levels registered in 2016/2017. China has shown the most remarkable recovery, with one of the most profitable winter seasons in years for the industry, thanks to AI vaccination, which has helped to significantly reduce the number of cases in the country, shows the Rabobank report.
    Industry 2018-03-30 12:33:18 2025-08-06 04:06:53 Details Edit Delete

1030 US pig production is raising by 3% Low feed prices and investments in new processing facilities have encouraged the producers to add more pigs in their herds.
The quarterly report on hogs and pigs released by the US Department of Agriculture shows that the inventory of swine totalled 72.9 million head, up 3% from the number registered in the first quarter of 2017.
66.7 million of the hogs and pigs were market ready, a gain of 3 percent over 2017, but down 1 percent from the last quarter, according to the statistics kept by USDA. Iowa reported the largest inventory of hogs and pigs among the states (22.6 million head). North Carolina and Minnesota followed with the second and third largest inventories with 8.90 million and 8.50 million head, respectively.
Analysts from Rabo AgriFinance believed that lower prices for feed during the quarter and the addition of four new pork processing plants likely encouraged producers to add more pigs to their herds. At the same time, prices for pork remain above breakeven, and that packer competition for hogs is driving stronger-than-expected lean hog prices, mentioned Rabo AgriFinance in its February report.
The National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) mentioned an increase of pigs weaned between December 2017 and February 2018 by 4% compared to the same period a year ago. 1031 Easter makes egg prices jump on the US market A survey conducted by the American Farm Bureau Federation revealed that egg prices are 37% higher compared to Easter time last year.
A dozen of eggs is sold by $1.80, up to 37% than last year, revealed the data collected by the American Farm Bureau Federation. In 2017, Easter have brought an increase in prices by 41%, according to the survey, quoted by Washington Post.
For the economists that conducted the survey, this situation is explained by the fact that while American production stayed level, the demand on the foreign markets has increased.
The hike in foreign demand was exacerbated by a 2017 bird flu in South Korea, leading to a 663 percent increase in American egg exports there from 2016 to 2017, said Veronica Nigh, an economist at the American Farm Bureau Federation.

Also, the domestic egg consumption registered in 2017 reached an average of 275.2 eggs per year, a 20-year record high, and up with an egg and the half from the previous year.

“When you start multiplying that by 330 million consumers, that’s a lot of eggs,” mentioned Nigh. From her point of view, Easter may be a seasonal driver of egg consumption around the world, but the holiday was not a big factor in the recent hike in prices. Nevertheless, in the long term, egg production is likely to increase to match demand, and prices may slowly decline as a result but that is not expected in the next months, according to the analysts involved in the survey.
    Market 2018-03-31 11:46:02 2025-08-05 14:23:30 Details Edit Delete

1033 New vaccine efficient both for AI and duck enteritis The Pirbright institute has developed a vaccine that is efficient both for avian influenza and duck enteritis.
The research led by Professor Munir Iqbal at The Pirbright Institute is based on inserting protective avian influenza virus genes into the duck enteritis virus (DEV) vaccine by using a method of CRISPR/Cas9 gene editing that allows higher rates of gene insertion.

According to the researchers, the process is therefore more efficient and the resulting vaccine virus is able to protect ducks against both DEV and avian influenza.

Duck enteritis virus infects ducks, geese and swans, causing mortality rates of up to 100%. Vaccines are widely used to reduce the impact of DEV, and have recently been utilised for delivering vaccine components of other viruses such as avian influenza. Domestic duck populations in southeast Asia also play a key role in maintaining the reservoir of severe bird flu strains and allow infection to ‘spillover’ into chickens, making ducks important targets for vaccination campaigns.

    Industry 2018-04-01 12:44:08 2025-08-06 05:03:00 Details Edit Delete
1034 South Africa bans some meat products from Brazil Three Brazilian facilities are affected by the move, their MDM products being suspected to be at the centre of the listeriosis outbreak in the African country.
Since March, the South African Department of agriculture, forestry and fisheries suspended meat imports from three Brazilian production facilities under the suspicion that some meat products imported in the past 12 months could be linked the listeriosis outbreak that hit the African country.
The announcement came after a new episode has begun in the Weak Flesh scandal in Brazil, which started a year ago and is targeting the Brazilian meat industry. Bomikazi Molapo, the department's spokesperson, confirmed that South Africa suspended imports of meat from these facilities on March 16 when it received an official report from the Brazilian authorities, informs Mail&Guardian newspaper.
A number of firms, including BRF, one of the largest poultry exporters in the world, have been implicated in the scandal. Two of the recently suspended facilities belong to BRF.
At this time, South Africa's authorities are investigating if the listeriosis outbreak has caused by the imported mechanically deboned meat (MDM), a key ingredient for the processed meat products like viennas and polony.
In 2017, South Africa has imported a volume of 202,000 tons of MDM from countries in the European Union, the United States, Thailand and Brazil. A large portion of that volume came from Brazil.
In total, South Africa has put under the suspension a number of 21 establishments that were implicated in the wider Brazilian meat investigation. The latest phase of the Operation Weak Flesh has led to the arrest of numerous officials as well as industry players — including that of BRF’s former chief executive.
Still, the tests effectuated on the MDM imported by South Africa have not revealed any evidence that the ST6 string of the virus has been found on these products. Also, the Brazilian embassy in Pretoria claims that the irregularities questioned in the Weak Flesh scandal could be associated with possible cases of Salmonella and are not linked to cases of listeriosis.
In a recent press statement, the embassy noted that Brazilian companies export processed meat to many other countries and no outbreak of the disease could be linked to Brazilian products anywhere else in the world.

“Processed meat is used as a raw material for different products available for consumption and it is therefore subject to industrial processes that should eliminate any risk of contamination by Listeria,” it said.
    Industry 2018-04-02 07:00:47 2025-08-04 22:25:22 Details Edit Delete
1035 Canadians eat less meat, says new study A new analysis of Statistics Canada data shows Canadians are consuming moderate amounts of meat.
On average, Canadians consume 41 grams of cooked fresh meat, such as beef, pork, lamb and veal, a day – that's about half the size of the palm of your hand. They also consume prepared poultry and prepared red meat in modest amounts – 28 grams a day, which is roughly two slices of deli turkey or ham.

"Canadians are consuming red and prepared meat well within Canada's Food Guide recommendations, and are knowledgeable about the essential nutrients that meat provides," says Chris White, President of the Canadian Meat Council. "Many might be
surprised to know that meat consumption in Canada is similar to that found in Mediterranean countries, places where diets are widely recognized as being amongst the healthiest worldwide," he added.

Additional Statistics Canada data collected through 24-hour dietary recalls shows that Canadians are consuming less than one Food Guide serving of red meat and prepared meat/poultry a day.
    Industry 2018-04-02 06:48:54 2025-08-06 06:19:24 Details Edit Delete
1036 The US pork industry is losing ground in China The trade war between Washington and Beijing led to a 25% tariff imposed on pork starting immediately.
A retaliatory measure adopted by the Chinese government is shaking the American meat industry as the pork delivered to the Asian market is now subject to a tariff of 25%.
China has adopted this measure on more than 100 products imported from the US, as the Trump administration decided to apply tariffs on steel and aluminium imports from China.

The measure is to affect the pork industry in the US considering the fact that China is one of the largest markets for pork exports. "China is a price-sensitive market, so any tariff rate increase would affect the competitive position of U.S. pork" announced Dan Halstrom, president and CEO of US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).

In 2017, the U.S. industry exported 309,284 metric tons (mt) of pork and pork variety meat to China, valued at $663.1 million – the third-largest international market by volume and fourth-largest by value. For variety meat exports only, China was one of the largest destination in both volume (181,351 mt) and value ($425.2 million). In fact, China accounted for more than one-third of U.S. pork variety meat exports last year, according to USMEF data.
Other products that are targeted by the retaliation in this trade war are fruits, nuts, wine, aluminium and steel pipes. In total, 128 American products are subject to import tariffs that range from 15% to 25%.

Ironically, the largest pork producer in the US, Smithfield, is owned by a Chinese company, WH Group, based in Shanghai. Representatives from Smithfield have already announced that they are focusing on other markets to balance any losses that may come from this trade war.
    Market 2018-04-02 10:08:04 2025-08-06 05:56:02 Details Edit Delete
