1059 Australia launches investigation after 2,900 sheep die on ship to Middle East Australia's Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, David, Littleproud, has announced in a statement that an investigation will be launched in the case of the nearly 2,900 sheep that have died during shipment to the Middle East.

The incident took place in the month of August 2017, when a shipment of 60,000 was heading from Perth to the Middle East. Although, onboard of the ship there was also a vet, 2,900 died due to heat stress. The shipping company has presented last week a full report regarding its practices in that month.

Still, Mr. Littleproud said that an investigation is needed because the mortality rate had exceeded that of 2%.

"As I've said many times since becoming Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources in December 2017, we need compliance with laws across all industries to give us integrity. This requires exporters, the industry and the regulator (the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources) to fulfil their full responsibilities. I will not be afraid to call out and take strong action against those who have not fulfilled their responsibilities, whether they be the exporter, the regulator or staff on ships," said the Australian official.

Last year, 12,377 sheep died during shipment from a total of 1,74 million that were being exported from Australia to other countries, a mortality rate of 0.71%.
    Industry 2018-04-06 07:00:17 2025-08-06 16:00:17 Details Edit Delete
1060
The canned protein market saw a significant increase in the last three years and new markets such as the Middle East, Africa, China and India are starting to develop. These markets represent a growth opportunity for Crider Foods, the world’s largest canned protein producer, as the company’s vice president global business development, Gary Clay, puts it, “ in these regions the cold chain is not very good and our products represent an opportunity because they don't require refrigeration and they have a very long shelf life.”
Mr Clay explained that as consumer trends he observed that when it comes down to meat products people are interested mostly these days in mainly convenience, taste, quality and food safety. From this point of view, Mr Clay underlines that Crider Foods is compliant with all these consumer requests.
“People tend to have confidence in our products because they are sustainably raised and we don't use any artificial ingredients, that types of things, so our products happen to be commercially sterile so there is a certain amount of trust and confidence for those kinds of products,” added Mr Clay.
Regarding the vegan and organic trends, Mr Clay considers that there will always be a demand for a niche product, such as organic ones, antibiotic free or vegan products but, in his view, there is always going to be also a strong demand for proteins such as chicken, turkey or beef. “Because people like them and they are sustainable and healthy for you.”
    Industry 2018-04-06 08:23:32 2025-08-06 21:46:42 Details Edit Delete

1063 2018 brings new challenges for the Thai poultry industry The domestic demand is still weak and the producers must ease the growth, recommends Rabobank.
2018 will be a challenging year for the Thai poultry industry as the domestic demand remains weak, observed Rabobank analysts in their latest outlook for this sector.
A significant expansion led to oversupply in the last couple of months and, as a result, broiler prices fell by 12% in Q1 2018 compared to Q3 2017, mentioned the report quoted by Asian Agribiz.
Rabobank recommended the local industry must to stay “disciplined with its growth this year” in order to gradually recover to an appropriate market balance. Meanwhile, a chance to expand the country's market share on poultry exports is to be seen soon as Brazil's poultry industry is dragged into a new episode of the "rotten meat" scandal.
Russia and Thailand, producers who are now confronted with oversupply after industry expansion, will try to capture some of Brazil’s lost market share in global trade, believes Nan-Dirk Mulder, Senior Analyst – Animal Protein at Rabobank.
    Industry 2018-04-08 08:00:41 2025-08-05 14:31:44 Details Edit Delete
1064 Vietnam's pangasius exports to face shortage until summer Pangasius exports are directed mainly to China leaving the US and European markets with a smaller volume of fish.
The unpredictable weather has caused heavy losses to Vietnam's pangasius industry in the Mekong Delta area. A prolonged farming time resulting in unsatisfactory fish production has already affected the export markets in the Western world and pushed the prices up to $1.4 per kg, the highest in many years.
"Now that the pangasius industry has stabilized with brand’s strength, price and profit, there is a shortage of pangasius. We expect this to last until June", explained Nguyen Hoai Nam, Deputy General Secretary of Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP), for Asian Agribiz.
According to his saying, the supply of catfish in Vietnam will not be sufficient for the European and US markets, but only for China.
    Market 2018-04-08 12:00:23 2025-08-06 12:42:19 Details Edit Delete

1066 German pork exports down for the third consecutive year Germany's exports of pork fell by 3% in 2017 to 1.8 million tons, this representing the third consecutive year of decline, according to the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board's (AHDB) recent analysis.

Abigail Schofield, trainee analyst at AHDB, says the decline was largely a result of decreased shipments to China, which fell 40%, to 168,000 tonnes in 2017, compared with a year earlier.

Weaker export demand from China is a result of the recovery of its own domestic production as modern sows have filled some of the supply gap.

Countering the drop in Chinese trade, was an increase in deliveries of German pork to other non-EU countries.

Most notably, there was a 22% increase in exports to South Korea, totalling 95,000 tonnes. There were also increases in exports to the Philippines, Japan and Hong Kong.

Whilst the overall volume decreased, exports to other EU member states remained steady on the year earlier, totalling 1.4 million tonnes. Italy remained the largest export market for German pork, although volumes were back 4% on the year. In contrast, the second largest destination, the Netherlands increased its imports of German pork by 10%, totalling 201,500 tonnes.
    Industry 2018-04-09 07:15:54 2025-08-04 04:31:43 Details Edit Delete

1070 UK backs up its poultry standards in new trade agreements The British Poultry Council defends UK's animal welfare and food safety standards in the wake of new trade deals after the US Trade Representative underlined in its latest report that it disapproves with a series of measures imposed by the European Union.
The latest report launched by the US Trade Representative says the US is concerned with a number of measures the EU maintains for the purposes of food safety and protecting human, animal, or plant life or health. US officials fear that these measures will "unnecessarily restrict trade without furthering their safety objectives". The report states that the EU measures are not based on scientific principles, maintained with sufficient scientific evidence, or applied only to the extent necessary.

The report further says that in some cases the EU authorities should recognize the current US food safety measures as equivalent to those imposed in the EU as they reflect the same level of protection and this could facilitate trade between the two counterparts.

As a response to the report, the British Poultry Council says that this offer from the US to trade products that do not meet British food production standards "is insulting".

"British farmers have worked incredibly hard to build a food system that speaks to the public good, that enhances British food values and that ensures high standards of production from farm to fork," British Poultry Council, Chief Executive, Richard Griffiths said.

"We know that British consumers are unwilling to accept lower standards as part of a trade deal with the US. One of the recent polls commissioned by the Institute for Public Policy Research highlights that Britons are willing to cancel a post-Brexit deal with the US in order to protect UK’s animal welfare and food safety standards," Mr. Griffiths added.

The British Poultry Council said in a statement that it will carry on working with the Government towards opening new markets for trade by stressing the vital importance of quality. The Council concluded that it is not willing to compete to a race to the bottom and will not compromise on the country's animal welfare and food safety standards in pursuit of new trade deals.
    Industry 2018-04-10 14:00:52 2025-08-06 19:28:45 Details Edit Delete
1071 The Brazilian company paid almost one billion dollars for the controlling stake in National Beef Packing Company LLC and become the second largest beef processor in the world.
969 million dollar was the price paid by Marfrig Global Foods SA for a 51% share in National Beef Packing Company LLC, as the Brazilian firm mentioned in a statement on 9th of April.

The transaction is valued at $2.3 billion, including the debts, according to the statement released by Marfrig. Rumours about the transaction have started in January when sources inside National Beef mentioned that Leucadia, the majority stakeholder (79%), is considering selling a part or all of its stakes in what is considered to be one of the biggest units in the meat-processing industry from North-America.

National Beef Packing Co. is ranked as the fourth-largest U.S. beef processor behind Tyson Foods Inc., JBS SA and Cargill Inc. The company slaughters about 12.5% of U.S. beef cattle. National Beef reported losses in 2013, 2014 and 2015 but jumped to profit in 2016 (329 million USD) and in the first three quarters of 2017 (310 million USD). Leucadia listed the net book value of its National Beef investment at 629.8 million USD as of Dec. 31, 2016.

The acquisition is making Marfrig the second largest beef processor in the world, with a slaughtering capacity of 8.3 million per year with the combined operations and consolidated sales of $13 billion. 1072 India's bovine exports to the Middle East will increase The Asian country is targeting a stronger presence in markets that were usually dominated by Australia.
India's herd of cattle and water buffalo is set to increase this year and that leads to a stronger presence of Indian beef in some export markets, commented Meat&Livestock Australia (MLA), according to Queensland Country Life.
India’s beef and buffalo meat production is expected to reach 4.25 million tonnes carton weight in 2017 and increase by 1.2 per cent in 2018, to 4.3mt, thinks MLA international markets general manager Michael Finucan.
"India’s meat sector mainly depends on the slaughter of unproductive water buffalo cows and bulls from the dairy sector. As water buffalos account for around 45pc of the dairy herd in India, the growth in Indian buffalo meat production is largely driven by the expanding dairy industry", said Finucan.
Meantime, the Indian government is supporting the dairy industry to expand further and that is increasing the rate of slaughtering for the unproductive animals in this sector.
The primary export markets for Indian buffalo meat are Vietnam, Malaysia and Egypt but MLA's experts are expecting to see a bigger presence of Indian beef in markets such as UAE and Saudi Arabia that were usually dominated by the Australian beef industry.
    Industry 2018-04-11 07:00:17 2025-08-06 15:26:24 Details Edit Delete
1073 VIDEO - "I think that a lot of products coming from the West could be locally manufactured"
2017 turned out to be a challenging year for the meat businesses in the Middle East as the diplomatic standoff against Qatar and the economic crisis in Egypt have taken a toll in the revenues.
Nevertheless, the market expansion in the region has covered some of the losses resulted from this situation and the outlook for 2018 is making the local players confident in the development of their businesses.
"The outlook for 2018, well, I am positive about it. There is a lot of products still coming from the West which I think it could be locally manufactured.
The trend that we have seen it coming is that the consumer demands more GMO-free food, organic products, green label. That is something that I have seen in the last couple of months and the trend is going to green label, no preservatives, no phosphates, no nitrates, no meat substitutes, just pure meat and I think that the consumer will pay a higher price for a high-value product", expressed his feelings Densil Quadros, CEO of Freshly Frozen Foods, Dubai.

The company already operates two facilities for meat processing and one for value-added products but it wants to expand further the capacities with an investment of $10 million this year and to enter the Saudi Arabia market in the next three years.
    Market 2018-04-11 07:03:22 2025-08-06 21:46:36 Details Edit Delete
1075 Norwegian cod exports sets all-time record quarter A strong demand from Spain and Portugal kept up the prices for clipfish, salted and fresh whole code.
Norwegian cod seems to be the best-selled seafood product in the first three months of this year, as Norwegian Seafood Council reported.

"This is the best quarter for cod ever, with a total export value of over NOK 3 billion ($385 million). In particular, clipfish, salted fish and fresh whole cod, in particular, have experienced price increases, with 19%, 12% and 7% respectively. This is due to strong demand in our most important consumer markets, such as Portugal and Spain”, said Ingrid Kristine Pettersen, seafood analyst with the Norwegian Seafood Council.

A strong demand for clipfish in Portuguese market has pushed up the prices with 3% and gave a boost to the industry, even if the volumes were down by 3% compared to the same quarter of 2017. Portugal, Brazil and the Dominican Republic were the main markets for clipfish in the first quarter.
Another category of cod that presented a stronger demand on the foreign market was salted fish, Portugal, Greece and Spain being the main destinations for this type of products. The volume of 8.700 tons of salted fish worth NOK 429 million ($55 million) exported by Norway marks a 4% increase in volume and a 19% increase in value.
Fresh and frozen cod have registered an increase in prices, unusual for this time of year.
Norway exported 32,000 tonnes of fresh cod, including skrei, worth NOK 1.1 billion ($141.2 million) and 22,000 tonnes of frozen cod with a value of NOK 772 million ($99 million) in the first quarter. "Usually we see that the price of fresh whole cod and skrei declines in March, but this year the price has actually increased. Skrei volumes have also increased during the same period”, says Pettersen.
In total, Norway's seafood exports in the first three months of this year were at 676,000 tons (down by 8%) with a value of NOK 23.7 billion ($3 billion), down by 2% compared with first quarter last year.
    Industry 2018-04-11 11:00:15 2025-08-06 07:05:21 Details Edit Delete
1076 US pork exports reported higher levels in February compared to those from 2017 Pork exports from the US reported higher levels in February compared to a year ago, increasing both in volume and value, according to statistics released by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) and compiled by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF).
US pork exports were up 4% in volume in February compared to the same month in 2017, reaching 205,466 metric tons (mt) and increased in value by 12% in the same period, reaching $547.2 million.

Through February, pork exports were 2 percent ahead of last year’s pace at 408,934 mt, while export value climbed 10 percent to $1.09 billion.

February exports accounted for 27.8 percent of total pork production and 24 percent for muscle cuts only – up from 27.6 percent and 22.9 percent, respectively, a year ago. Through February, the percentage of total pork production exported was slightly lower year-over-year at 26.1 percent, while the percentage of muscle cuts exported edged higher to 22.7 percent. February export value averaged $56.78 per head slaughtered, up 9 percent from a year ago. Through February, per-head export value was $53.70, up 5 percent.

Pork exports steady to Mexico; solid growth in Korea, Japan and Latin America

February pork exports to leading volume market Mexico were steady with last year at 64,523 mt, while export value was slightly higher at $117.5 million. Through February, export volume was steady with last year’s record pace at 137,520 mt, while export value increased 3 percent to $251 million.

In Japan, the leading value destination for U.S. pork, February volume was steady year-over-year at 32,418 mt, while value was up 3 percent to $134.7 million. Through February, export volume to Japan increased 6 percent from a year ago to 67,466 mt and value climbed 10 percent to $281.1 million. This included a 7 percent increase in chilled pork exports to 36,929 mt, valued at $176.9 million (up 11 percent).

Pork exports to South Korea climbed 33 percent in volume (40,710 mt) and 43 percent in value ($119 million). Most U.S. pork products now enter the Korean market duty free under the Korea-U.S. Free Trade Agreement (KORUS), and high-quality, affordable U.S. pork is helping to underpin Korea’s record-breaking pork consumption. USMEF continues to help position U.S. pork in new and exciting ways in Korea, including the addition of pulled pork to many restaurant menus, a selection of high-end sausages at convenience stores and a wide array of home meal replacement and snack items sold at retail and through e-commerce.

Through the first two months of 2018, other highlights for U.S. pork include:

Led by strong growth in Colombia and Peru, pork exports to South America were 9 percent ahead of last year’s pace in volume (17,855 mt) and 14 percent higher in value ($43.1 million), with consumption growth in the region continuing to outpace domestic production.

Solid growth in Honduras, a doubling of exports to El Salvador and a steady performance in Guatemala pushed pork export volume to Central America 16 percent above last year’s pace at 12,255 mt, while value climbed 20 percent to $28.9 million. Exports also increased year-over-year to Nicaragua, Panama and Belize.

Exports to the Philippines, the mainstay destination for U.S. pork in the ASEAN and the region’s largest import market, increased 3 percent in volume (4,746 mt) and remained steady with last year’s pace in value ($10.8 million). Exceptional growth in Vietnam (901 mt valued at $3.7 million, up 272 percent and 469 percent, respectively) pushed exports to the ASEAN region 18 percent higher in volume (6,178 mt) and 29 percent higher in value ($16.9 million). Exports also increased year-over-year to Singapore, Indonesia and Malaysia.

In China/Hong Kong, pork export volume fell 14 percent year-over-year to 69,515 mt, but value increased 3 percent to $164 million. Muscle cut exports increased 7 percent to 28,775 mt, while variety meat exports declined 24 percent in volume (40,740 mt) but with sharply higher prices value only dipped 2 percent to $107.4 million. The Chinese government recently imposed a 25 percent tariff on imports of U.S. pork and pork variety meat, in addition to the 12 percent tariff already in effect in China. The higher tariff rate is not reflected in the January-February results, as it took effect April 2.
