1037 | VIDEO - "The Middle East region is exciting for our members" |
US beef exports to Saudi Arabia are back again after a suspension that was imposed between 2012-2016 due to a confirmation of a BSE case in California. For the last two years, US suppliers have struggled to re-enter this market.

An event was hosted by the US Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and the US embassy in Riyadh to mark this moment. More than 100 importers, foodservice operators, chefs and retailers attended the “U.S. Beef Kickoff” event.

The event proved to be very successful, underscoring the high level of interest in U.S. beef following the lifting of the recent BSE-related ban. It was not only a celebration, it was also a perfect venue for educating our guests about the excellent quality of U.S. beef and the many ways it can be featured on restaurant menus and in foodservice applications", said Eliane Elia, USMEF representative in the Middle East.

The importance of the Saudi market for the American beef industry was underlined by the president of USMEF, Dan Halstrom, who declared"for EuroMeatNews that the industry has to rebuild this market for US beef.

"We have the very high-end US grain fed beef and also products from the middle sector, like casual and fast casual dining for our costumers here. Egipt is also a big destination market for some variety meat, like livers, and the growth prospect and the potential in this part of the world are very exciting for our members.
A really exciting country that we just regained access last year is Saudi Arabia. We've been out of there a while for various reasons. I would say that Saudi Arabi is probably one of our primary focuses to re-establish the presence of US beef in 2018", declared Dan Halstrom, president and CEO at US Meat Export Federation, in an interview for EuroMeatNews.

Other markets that are now growing are in South and Central America but also South Africa and West Africa mentioned Halstrom during the interview.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-02 12:07:02 | 2025-08-06 05:33:20 | Details Edit Delete | |||

1039 | Poultry consumption expected to increase in China | China's broiler production is expected to increase by 700,000 mt to 11.7 million mt this year due to returning consumer demand, according to the latest report from USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS). |
Analysts at USDA expect China's production to increase based on a rise in demand for poultry among the Chinese population. Demand for poultry meat and products plummeted after China recorded its worst H7N9 avian influenza (AI) virus outbreak in the fall of 2016, which continued into the summer of 2017.

In July 2017, China’s Ministry of Agriculture began an intensive H7 vaccination campaign. During the flu season (October 2017 to present), China only recorded three human illnesses due to avian influenza. The Chinese Ministry estimates that out of all China’s commercial poultry flocks, over 80% have been vaccinated against H7N9.

USDA's report says that consumption is forecasted to increase by 1% in 2018 to 11.56 mt. Analysts explain that the growth is based on a growing Chinese population, recovering from consumer concerns about the safety of
domestic poultry. Overall, China's broiler meat consumption is still very low, with per capita consumption
at about 8 kg—much lower than the 28 kg per capita level in Taiwan.

Last year, Brazil accounted for the largest share of poultry exports to China, namely 85%, followed by Argentina with 12%, Chile with 3% and Poland with 3%.

However, Brazil is currently plagued by a long-running scandal which has affected its ability to export meat and poultry. On March 6, 2018, Brazil’s largest poultry exporter BRF was caught up in a cheating operation by the Brazilian government. As a result, BRF has suspended operations at three of its large poultry meat export plants.
Analysts at USDA estimate that China's poultry imports from Brazil will drop this year and since the country accounted for such a large market share in 2017, experts say that other major trading partners have limited production capacity to fill the gap.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-02 12:26:49 | 2025-08-05 13:56:37 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1040 | Positive growth for Vietnam's pangasius exports to the UK | In the EU, the Netherlands and the UK remained the two main importers of pangasius from Vietnam in 2017, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP). |
Analysts at VASEP said that the UK was the only market which reported an increase in Vietnamese pangasius imports. Vietnam exported pangasius worth US$45.7 million to the UK market in 2017. This accounted for 2.6% of the total export value, up 2.5% over 2016. Vietnam pangasius had to compete with other whitefish products in the UK such as frozen cod, haddock and frozen pollock.

"Vietnam pangasius has more competitive prices compared to other whitefish products. In the coming time, the UK expected to be a potential market of Vietnam’s seafood companies," the VASEP statement read.

Vietnam occupies the 6th spot among the main exporters of whitefish to the UK market. Iceland and China supply most of the whitefish to the UK, accounting for 20-45% of its imports.

In 2018, Vietnam’s pangasius exports forecasted to slightly increase and remain the same level as that in 2017. VASEP analysts concluded that compared with other importing markets in the EU, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the UK continued to show the positive growth and good signs of recovery.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-03 06:23:35 | 2025-08-06 06:51:09 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1041 | Pig prices stayed strong as demand for lamb grew in Europe, says QMS | In the week ended April 1st, prime prices for hoggs although reported a slight decrease have remained 30% above year earlier levels, according to Quality Meat Scotland. |
“Auction market throughputs through March have been well above last years levels, while the UK weekly slaughter of prime sheep has been running well ahead of last year throughout January and February,” said Quality Meat Scotland’s Director of Economics Services.

“So despite strong supplies of hogs, farmgate prices have strengthened suggesting a basic strength in demand,” he added.

According to QMS, high farmgate hog prices were reported not only in Scotland but also in Ireland, France, and Spain, where they were 15-20% higher compared to the previous year. QMS says that this suggests a general firmness in the market place across Europe.

Kantar Worldpanel analysis of UK retail sales reveals that for a number of years the volume of lamb sold in the four-week period including Easter can be double the levels of the month before and the month after.

“All of that growth in sales is put down to purchases of leg roasting joints, which can leave processors with a major challenge to sell the remaining cuts from a lamb carcase when demand for leg roasts is so high,” said Mr Ashworth.

“Nevertheless, to meet orders, demand for slaughter stock inevitably increases,” he added.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-04-03 05:33:55 | 2025-08-06 06:56:32 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1042 | Beef and Lamb New Zealand is launching a new strategy for red meat producers | The environmental issues are brought into question as the association is looking to answer this challenge. |
A new strategy on New Zealand's red meat sector is going to be implemented under the mandate of the new president of Beef+Lamb Association, Andrew Morrison.

The revised strategy was adopted last year and is going to put more emphasis on enhancing farmers' environmental position, unlocking market potential and greater government and public insight engagement, while still supporting farming excellence, informs New Zealand Herald.

Key priorities in this program are the launching of the environment strategy and Red Meat Story, along with developing insights to secure the access in different markets.
"The red meat sector is in a strong position with an unprecedented global demand for protein. We need to leverage our competitive advantage of producing natural grass-fed, hormone and antibiotic-free sheep and beef", declared Morrison. In his opinion, red meat producers have to identify the reason why consumers moved away from a product, like red meat, in order to address that problem.

Andrew Morrison as represented the southern South Island region on B+LNZ's board for the past four years. 1043 | Scientists and meat processors gathered to help meat industry cut waste |
A special event that brought together scientist and meat processors from Wales have been staged last month by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) in order to bring the latest technology to bear on increasing profitability and reducing environmental impact in the red meat industry.

The sector is already applying very good practice in minimising its inputs and environmental impact, but the advance of technology offers new ways in which by-products can be used.
The event was held in partnership with the IBERS-led BEACON Biorefining Centre of Excellence at Aberystwyth University and the attendants were pleased to hear about the way companies can extract valuable commodities that can be used in a wide variety of contexts, from renewable energy to pharmaceuticals.

"This workshop was extremely useful in bringing together academic researchers with businesses from the Welsh red meat supply chain.A key statistic is that a typical 650kg beef animal will produce 345kg of meat, so the challenge is how best to use the rest of the carcase, especially as the market for skins and hides is less profitable than it used to be.

Many of the processors shared interesting data on how they reduced waste and utilised by-products, and emerging anaerobic digestion technology is clearly an avenue to be looked at", explained HCC Supply Chain Development Executive Dr Eleri Price.
The speakers included world-leading experts on waste reduction and the extracting value from by-products, including applied biochemist Dr David Bryant, waste and manufacturing specialist Chris Morris, and anaerobic digestion expert Prof. Sandra Esteves.
| 1 | Technology | 2018-04-03 11:24:51 | 2025-08-06 04:53:26 | Details Edit Delete | |||
1044 |
“Mobile is the future”, it looks convinced Gunther Dillman, Commercial Director at DMS Maschinensysteme, when he talks about the meat processing system that he designed to help small processing businesses and retail shops that are in need of a mobile processing unit from various reasons.

“I am the engineer and the constructor to some part of the machines and, with this new game, we start a new way into the future, the mobile food processing system. It presents a lot of possibilities to make a factory in the box for all types of food.

It can be applied in the bakery, cheeses and you have also the possibility to process meat. The first generation of this mobile processing system was sold on the Russian market. Three years ago we started to work on this new system with new materials, a new philosophy and new technologies”, said Gunther Dillman in an interview for EuroMeatNews at Anuga FoodTec 2018.

Build as a modular facility, the mini-plant for processing meat could be used to process and sell immediately the meat from small farms or it can be transformed into a small shop outside a retail store who is going trough a redecorate process.

The system is designed to save the energy and has installed cooling and heating systems in the walls and floor. “We have two groups of costumers. We have the end users who are constructing or modernizing a building and choose to use a mobile system to keep its operations going and we have another group, represented by the supermarkets, who can rent a system when they are making a renovation in the butchery so they don't lose the costumers. At this moment we sell in the European market and we rented systems in the German market but we expect to go global”, declared Dillman.
| 1 | Technology | 2018-04-03 16:19:30 | 2025-08-06 06:39:47 | Details Edit Delete | ||||

1054 | The consumer's lifestyle dictates what and how people want to eat | This topic dominated Anuga's FoodTec 2018 panel of discussion during the entire exhibition. |
Meat industry and meat technology sector have to adapt to the new trends dictated by the consumer desire and this has a direct influence on production processes and subsequent packaging, according to Carola K. Herbst from the DLG’s (German Agricultural Society) Food Competence Center.

"Experience from the German market shows that consumers are getting older; eating more outside the home; eating ideologically or in line with religious beliefs, and their diets reflect individual values as they attempt to optimize their physical and mental performance", mentioned Herbst.

From this perspective, packaging has to respond to the consumer's demand by acting as a direct interface with the public and has to be designed in a way that communicates messages clearly. It needs to reach the consumer on an emotional level, and meet the growing desire for natural packaging materials, as well as conveying other ideals such as beauty, well-being, health and fitness.

These characteristics included the opportunity to exploit mobile and digital technology in modern packaging, said Herbst. "Smart packaging offers an additional function with integrated technologies. These are chemically or electronically based and are used in a market-driven or consumer-oriented manner. Data carriers can inform consumers about the origin or ingredients of a product, while special indicator substances can indicate the degree of freshness or the temperature of the product", explained Carola Herbst.

These new trends require investment in new technologies and processes but product quality and manufacturing costs also had to be optimized, specified the DLG expert.
| 1 | Technology | 2018-04-05 11:00:48 | 2025-08-06 06:10:20 | Details Edit Delete | ||
