254 | The Organic Trade Association sues the USDA | The Organic Trade Association has announced that it is suing the United States Department of Agriculture over the issue of the institution not putting into effect new organic livestock standards. |

“We are standing up on behalf of the entire organic sector to protect organic integrity, advance animal welfare, and demand the government keeps up with the industry and the consumer in setting organic standards,” said Laura Batcha, Executive Director and CEO of the Organic Trade Association.

The suit alleges the U.S. Department of Agriculture violated the Organic Foods Production Act, and unlawfully delayed the effective date of the final livestock standards that were developed by industry and in accordance with the processes established by Congress, and with abusing the agency’s discretion by ignoring the overwhelming public record established in support of these organic standards. The trade association further contends that the Trump Administration’s Regulatory freeze order issued to federal agencies on Jan. 20, 2017, should not apply to organic standards because they are voluntary and are required only of those farms and businesses that opt-in to be certified organic.

Supporting the Organic Trade Association in the suit, as groups harmed by this protracted government inaction, are organizations representing organic livestock farmers, organic certification agencies, and organic retailers and consumers.
| 1 | Industry | 2017-09-29 07:05:08 | 2025-08-01 19:28:54 | Details Edit Delete | ||

395 | New text alert service for AI launched in Northern Ireland | The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) has announced the release of a new text alert service which will inform all bird keepers of any disease outbreaks. |

According to DAERA, the new system was introduced to urge all Irish bird keepers to remain vigilant to the threat of Avian Influenza (AI) as the migratory cycle begins.

“The Department has recently launched a new text alert service for all bird keepers to receive immediate notifications of disease outbreaks or other important disease information. This will enable bird keepers to take action to protect their flock at the earliest opportunity. I would therefore encourage bird keepers to subscribe to this service by simply texting ‘BIRDS’ to 67300,” the Chief Veterinary Officer for NI, Robert Huey, said.

Producers who have provided DAERA with a valid mobile phone number and registered their birds automatically were subscribed to the service and notified by text. The agency is advising producers who have not received confirmation are being advised to text ‘BIRDS’ to 67300 to subscribe to the new text alert service.

Mr. Huey added that the risk of avian influenza remains a real and constant threat as the disease continues to circulate in Europe.

“With autumn upon us and decreasing temperatures, wild birds are starting their migratory cycle in preparation for winter. Wild birds increase the risk of avian influenza being spread through contact with domestic birds. I therefore urge bird keepers, especially those with free range systems, to remain vigilant and continue to practice high standards of biosecurity on their premises,” Mr. Huey said.

All bird keepers may download a bird registration form from the DAERA website or contact the DAERA Helpline on 0300 200 7852. DAERA advises all bird keepers who have not yet registered their birds to do so immediately.
| 1 | Industry | 2017-11-13 10:23:40 | 2025-07-31 21:15:36 | Details Edit Delete | ||
273 | Armenian meat prices increase not related to large exports | Ignaty Arakelya, the minister of Agriculture from Armenia, declared on Wednesday that large exports of cattle will not influence the increase of prices in meat, butter, and cheese as the local media claims, the Arka News Agency reports. |

According to local media, the exports of a large number of cattle will produce a hike in prices for meat, butter, and cheese by 15% in the following period. But the Armenian minister of Agriculture says that the prices are determined by the demand in the market.

"In any case, it is the market that determines the price of a particular product," Mr. Arakelyan said, according to Arka News.

Furthermore, he added that the export of 12,000 cattle could not affect the prices, neither the decrease in the number of Armenian cattle. The minister explained that prices could have been influenced by a rise in demand which determined the farmers to increase prices.

In addition, another reason given by the Government official for the increase of 15% in meat prices was the rise of cattle feed by 30%.
| 1 | Market | 2017-10-05 08:00:11 | 2025-08-01 19:20:01 | Details Edit Delete | ||
277 | The Russian embargo brought down Belgian pork production by 6% | Belgian pork production will fall by an estimated 6% in 2017, mainly due to the impact of the 2014-2015 crisis resulted after the Russian embargo, Rene Maillard, the Belgian Meat Office manager, told EuroMeatNews. |

According to market observers, the stabilization of the Belgian pork production is expected in the 4th quarter of 2017 and a status quo beginning in 2018. Mr. Maillard explained that this could be followed by a slight increase in production.

"Home consumption is eroding slightly as this has been the case the last years. Remember that we are, as the other West European countries big consumers of pork, operating in a mature declining consumption market," added Mr. Maillard.

Talking about the vegan trend which started to be popular in the past years, Rene Maillard said that it does not yet affect significantly the meat consumption in Belgium, but that it is clear that the meat sector has to be very cautious regarding the long trend.

"Veganists and vegetarians count only for 2% of the consumers. But they behave as missionaries trying to achieve that people cease to eat meat. And we must admit that they succeed in attracting a lot of media interest. Because for the media everything that is not normal and sensational has news value. And news value is what counts for the media: they have to sell their product too!", added Mr. Maillard.
| 1 | Industry | 2017-10-07 07:00:33 | 2025-08-01 18:11:09 | Details Edit Delete | ||
