181 Organic Trade Association sues USDA Organic Trade Association (OTA) has filed a lawsuit against the US Department of Agriculture over its failure to implement new organic livestock standards.

OTA says that the US Department of Agriculture unlawfully delayed the implementation of the new standards for organic livestock, standards that were developed by the industry in accordance with the processes established by the Congress.

In addition, OTA considers that the USDA abused the agency's discretion by ignoring the overwhelming public record established in support of these organic standards.

“We are standing up on behalf of the entire organic sector to protect organic integrity, advance animal welfare, and demand the government keep up with the industry and the consumer in setting organic standards,” said Laura Batcha, Executive Director and CEO of the Organic Trade Association.

Furthermore, the agency says that the Regulatory freeze order which was issued to federal agencies on January 20, 2017, by the Trump Administration, should not apply to organic standards "because they are voluntary and are required only of those farms and businesses that opt in to be certified organic."

    Industry 2017-09-14 07:10:03 2025-07-30 09:54:06 Details Edit Delete
173 Paraguay beef exports for 2018 are forecast at 380,000 tons The Paraguayan beef export sector is starting to work in trying to position their product in an upper price level as they realize that due to the quality improvement they could get better prices for a good share of the exports. They know they will have to continue working on the quality and packaging of the products.

Paraguayan beef exports for 2018 are forecast at 380,000 tons cwe (carcass weight equivalent), unchanged from last year, as the USDA report shows. Although beef production is forecast to increase marginally, contacts expect that most of the growth will be demanded by the local market. The domestic market is forecast to remain steady, and in some cases, paying higher prices than the export market.

There are currently significant differences between the export data published by the Central Bank (the official statistics entity) and Senacsa, the animal health service. For the first semester of 2017 the Central Bank data shows a drop in exports, while Senacsa (corroborated by the local export industry) indicates shipments to be 1-2 percent higher than the same period a year ago. Post's export estimate for 2017 is based on Senacsa's current data. During the first semester of 2017, beef exports to the top three markets, Chile, the Russian Federation and Brazil accounted for 75 percent of total exports. The EU was the highest value market for chilled beef, with exports of premium cuts under the Hilton Quota. Brazil and Chile followed as the best average unit price per ton. Taiwan and Israel were the best-paying markets for frozen boneless beef exports.

The private sector is working with the local animal health service in creating a carcass grading system. Paraguay is the only country in Mercosur which does not have a system in place. Many believe this is will be very important to access higher demanding markets.

Paraguay beef can access to more than 90 markets, of which more than 10 were opened last year. The sector knows that it needs to focus on opening key markets which buy larger volumes at higher prices. These markets include the United States, China, the EU (including the 481 quotas), and the high-quality beef quota of the Russian Federation.
    Market 2017-09-13 07:00:31 2025-07-29 03:27:13 Details Edit Delete

U.S. Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross, Jr. and Chinese Vice Premier Wang Yang were in attendance to witness the signing ceremony, which took place at the Great Hall of the People.

“These groundbreaking agreements bring together two of America’s most trusted and in-demand meat suppliers with China’s leading e-commerce platform, to the benefit of both U.S. producers and Chinese consumers,” said Richard Liu, JD.com Chairman and CEO, who participated in the signing ceremony. “China’s shoppers will rest assured knowing that they are able to purchase safe, high-quality meat products imported from the U.S., with the fast delivery and ironclad assurance of authenticity that they have come to expect from JD. We look forward to expanding our long-term cooperation with high-quality U.S. meat producers like Smithfield and MSGA.”

Meat products are a fast-growing category for JD. In the first half of 2017, volume from direct sales of meat on JD increased more than 780 percent year-over-year, with imported meat accounting for more than 30 percent of those sales. Online orders for fresh and frozen meat come chiefly from first and second-tier cities, leaving huge potential for growth in online sales from the rest of the country.

JD will import Montana-sourced beef from Cross Four Ranch and MSGA members to China for direct sale to the 258 million Chinese consumers on its e-commerce platform. The procurement agreement is for an initial three years, with a minimum commitment of $200 million in beef to be imported by JD from Cross Four Ranch and MSGA members at fair market value during the term. It is estimated that JD’s purchase of Cross Four Ranch and MSGA beef will increase Montana beef export sales by as much as 40% in 2018.
    Retail 2017-11-09 07:01:36 2025-07-30 06:41:33 Details Edit Delete

447 African swine fever continues to spread in Europe A joint event of the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, the German County Association and the German Farmers Association regarding concerns of African swine fever outbreaks recently took place in Berlin.

The German authorities talked about matters relating the measures needed to be taken for Germany to be protected against an epidemic of ASF, but also to be prepared for a possible emergency situation.

The epizootic epidemic has been occurring in the Baltic States and Poland since 2014 - in countries further to the east since 2007 - and is spreading further and further to the west. There is a constant danger of the disease spreading across Germany's borders.

Federal Minister of Agriculture Christian Schmidt said: "An outbreak of African swine fever in Germany would bring heavy economic consequences for all pig farmers. That is why the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) has already taken a number of measures to prevent further the spread of African swine fever. As early as August, the BMEL launched an information campaign on motorway rest stops, parking lots and truck stops. In September, in Prague, I exchanged views with my Czech counterpart Marian Jure?ka on combating African swine fever in wild boar. We are currently preparing for the crisis with a joint crisis exercise by the federal government and the states. "

The Chief Executive of the German County Association Prof. dr. Hans-Günter Henneke said: "The districts would be affected by an outbreak of the disease in many ways. In addition to the significant impact on pig farming and food processing companies, the counties in the Länder are regularly checked by the authorities responsible for disease control. Therefore, we want to make a contribution to be prepared for the epidemic. The districts have many years of experience in the control of animal diseases, most recently proven again in the avian influenza case. In cooperation with farmers and hunters, they ensure a rapid and effective response to a possible occurrence in Germany. "

Johannes Röring, Chairman of the Special Committee on Pork at the German Farmers' Association (DBV) and President of the Westfälisch-Lippe Agricultural Association: "For us pig farmers and for the entire value chain, an outbreak of African swine fever would be a disaster. That's why we have to do everything so that the epidemic does not occur in Germany. At the same time, however, we must be prepared for the worst case as much as possible and support agriculture! This requires, in particular, a quick and smooth crisis management, which succeeds only in interaction with the authorities, hunters and agriculture. Therefore, such common events as today are very valuable in being able to respond quickly in times of crisis. "
    Industry 2017-11-27 07:21:37 2025-07-30 06:01:50 Details Edit Delete
