2055 Welsh abattoirs invited to tackle food waste A new report highlights the importance of innovative work in the red meat sector to tackle food waste and news areas for future development.
A new report written by Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC) on behalf of WRAP Cymru has identified several opportunities where the red meat processing sector in Wales can reduce waste and increase efficiency.
The study was focused on identifying opportunities to maximise value and reduce waste in red meat processing. A sample of four abattoirs took part in the project out of the 19 abattoirs currently operating in Wales. The abattoirs which participated in the project were small and medium enterprises with the majority being run as family businesses. Their current processes and procedures were monitored and assessed to see what more could be done in the industry to increase business profitability and reduce waste – improving the industry’s environmental footprint.
Norman Bagley of the Association of Independent Meat Suppliers commented "The processing sector has come under increased financial pressures over the last decade with margins continually being squeezed. This work could be of great value to small and medium-sized meat processors who play a vital role in sustaining the food and farming industries."

Key recommendations from the report to improve efficiency and reduce waste within the sector include: continuous reviews of business expenditure to manage costs; examining collaborative business ventures to reduce processing and waste disposal costs; investigating ways to add value to food products or waste products (such as pet food or energy generation) and offering training to both livestock farmers and abattoir staff to reduce waste on site.
Dr Eleri Price, Supply Chain Executive at HCC and co-author of the report commented, "There is good work currently being undertaken across the industry but this new report highlights ways in which red meat processors can become even more efficient and profitable whilst reducing waste and decreasing environmental impact. There are some steps farmers can take to reduce waste in the supply chain by ensuring that livestock is presented in the best possible condition."
    Industry 2018-10-17 06:44:03 2025-08-06 04:56:25 Details Edit Delete

2057 98% of landings in the Baltic Sea will come from sustainable fisheries New quotas for fishing in the Baltic Sea were announced this week by the European Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella.
New quotas for fishing in the Baltic Sea were announced this week and the value of landings for the next year is of €1 billion, with an average gross profit margin of above 30%.
The European Commissioner for the Environment, Maritime Affairs and Fisheries, Karmenu Vella declared that "decisions for 2019 need to be ambitious and responsible, in line with the objective to reach maximum sustainable yield (or MSY) levels by 2020 at the latest".
Therefore, in 2019, over 98% of estimated landings in the Baltic Sea will come from sustainable fisheries, mentioned the official.
There will be increased catches of western cod, sprat, plaice and Gulf of Riga herring, while the salmon quota in the main basin was kept at the same level. "We decided to decrease catches for eastern cod, salmon in the Gulf of Finland and for western, central and eastern herring, as well as herring in the Gulf of Bothnia.
On western cod, I am pleased that things are looking better in 2019. However, the stock is not yet seeing a sustained recovery. It is a good story that rests entirely on one good year in 2016. This is why it was important to limit the increase to levels that will still leave enough of that good year in the sea so that this fish can fill up the stock and produce more fish for the years to come.

While Council today has decided to increase the catch limits by more than that proposed by the Commission, this increase will still keep this catch limit in the lower half of the lower MSY-range. This should still help us to stay at sustainable levels also in the coming years", added Commissioner Vella.
On the other hand, western herring is to see a reduction of 48% and additional conservation measures to be taken by the Member States.
    Industry 2018-10-17 12:05:43 2025-08-06 13:33:18 Details Edit Delete

2066 Global pork production to reach 114.6 million tons in 2019 Global pork production is expected to increase by 1% in 2019, reaching 114.6 million tons based on the continued expansion in China and in the United States, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) latest forecast shows.
USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service's report "Livestock and Poultry: World Markets and Trade" forecasts that the pork production at a global level is almost in line with population growth.

China is expected to witness a larger growth in pork production due to a larger sow herd and improvements in productivity boost in pig supply. On the other hand, USDA warns about the impact on prices and movement that the African Swine Fever (ASF) had this year, which resulted in a slower rate of expansion relative to last year.

Meanwhile, it is expected that the EU production will decline marginally as lower hog prices and higher feed costs will drive a small reduction in the breeding herd.

Global pork exports are also expected to increase by 3% in 2019 based on a global strong demand. USDA also said that the EU will probably remain the top exporter, buoyed by higher demand in Asia, especially China. The US will occupy the second position in the world's leading pork exporters.

Brazil's exports are expected to rebound as growth to China and Hong Kong offset the loss of previous top market Russia. Import demand will also strengthen in Latin America, as favorable prices and changing preferences boost per-capita pork consumption.

The report also says that Mexico’s imports are forecast 5% higher and Colombia 29% higher on robust demand. South Korea’s imports will decline as near-record expected imports during 2018 are expected to lead to high stocks.
    Industry 2018-10-18 14:50:33 2025-08-05 21:02:35 Details Edit Delete
