1615	MHP's poultry sales boosted by exports	MHP, Ukraine's largest poultry producer, has reported sales amounting to 288,437 tonnes of poultry in the first half of 2018, with an increase of 2% compared to the similar period from the previous year, driven mainly by growth in exports.	<p>In the second quarter of 2018, MHP's poultry production volume rose by 7% to 155,725 tonnes and in H1 2018 increased by 7% to 307,890 tonnes, due to increased production of heavier chicken and decreased share of thinning.</p> <p>During the second quarter of 2018 the volume of chicken meat exports totaled 70,145 tonnes and remained almost stable compared to the second quarter of 2017 volume - 71,332 tonnes.</p> <p>During the first half of 2018, poultry exports increased by 9% and reached 133,564 tonnes compared to H1 2017 (123,042 tonnes), mainly driven by the growth of exports in Q1 2018.</p> <p>Based on its strategy on both geographic diversification and product mix optimization, the company has increased its chicken meat export volumes across the MENA, the EU, Africa and Asia.</p> <p>Total poultry exports in H1 2018 constituted around 46% vs 43% in H1 2017 of total poultry sales volumes.</p>	1		Industry		2018-07-18 12:08:49	2025-08-01 07:10:41	Details Edit Delete
1616	Latvia's pork prices fell by almost a quarter	Average pork prices in Latvia fell by 23.3% in May 2018 compared to the same month in 2017, according to the latest data released by the Latvian Ministry of Agriculture.	<p>In the European Union, average pork prices were down by 18.6% in May 2018 compared to year-earlier levels. Denmark reported a 21.3% decrease in average pork prices in the mentioned period, in Germany prices went down by 20.6%, in Poland by 21.6%. 1617	Brazil's pork exports down by 18.9% in H1 2018	Brazil's total pork exports amounted to 278.3 thousand tons in the first six months of 2018, down by 18.9% compared to the first semester in 2017, according to the latest data released by the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA).	<p>The decrease in pork exports was mainly caused by the trucker's strike that hit Brazil in the months of May and June this year and by the Russian embargo on Brazilian pork imports imposed at the end of last year.</p> <p>In terms of sales revenue, in the first half of 2018, the Brazilian pork industry exported products worth US $ 567.2 million, with a trade balance 30.4% lower than the US $ 814.7 million registered in the first half of 2017.</p> <p>In June, Brazil shipped only 35 thousand tons, a level lower by 45.4% compared to the corresponding period from 2017, when 64.1 thousand tons of pork were exported. Compared to the previous month, the exports went down by 26.6% (with 47.7 thousand tons exported in May 2018).</p> <p>The lower levels in shipments had a strong impact on the export sales revenue in June, which amounted to US $ 64.9 million, or 58.3% lower than the sum of US $ 156 million reported in June 2017. 1618	Smithfield recalls 12 tons of pepperoni products		<p>The not fully cooked pepperoni five cheese calzone products were produced on May 23, 2018.</p> <p dir="ltr">The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. M-19140” inside the USDA mark of inspection. These items were shipped to retail stores nationwide.                          </p> <p dir="ltr">The problem was discovered after several consumers contacted Stefano Foods about the problem. On July 16, 2018, the company notified FSIS.</p> <p dir="ltr">One consumer reported experiencing a small oral laceration during consumption of the product. 1620	B+LNZ to review farmer feedback on new levy proposal	Beef + Lamb New Zealand (B+LNZ) has announced it is reviewing farmer feedback regarding a proposal to increase sheepmeat and beef levies.	<p>Farmers provided feedback in a range of ways including by phone, email, post, social media, and online forms. B+LNZ will now collate and review the responses so the Board can make a decision in early August.</p> <p>“We’d like to thank farmers for their responses as we know it’s a busy time on the farm. 1621	Spanish firm Incarlopsa announces new acquisition		<p>The factory, located in the town of El Repilado (Huelva), and belonging to the municipality of Jabugois, has a two-story ham dryer that occupies 4,000 square meters in total. 1625	US imported more pangasius from Vietnam	As of the first half of April 2018, the total value of pangasius exports to the U.S market touched US$91.8 million, up 26.1%, accounting for 17.7% of total export value, according to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).	<p>So far, the export value of pangasius to the US market has kept the positive growth compared to the same period last year.</p> <p>Currently, Vietnam and China stayed as the only two exporters of pangasius to the U.S market. In particular, the import proportion from Vietnam accounts for 90% of total pangasius imports into the U.S.</p> <p style="font-weight: 400;">Recently, Vietnam’s pangasius exports to the U.S market went up due to an increase in domestic raw material prices. 1626	Russians ate 3 million KFC hot dogs made with sausages from Cherkizovo	Since spring, KFC restaurants have sold more than 3 million hot dogs produced with chicken sausages from leading poultry producer Cherkizovo.	<p>According to the company, hot dogs with chicken sausages are a new product for KFC and a new direction in the HoReCa segment for Cherkizovo.</p> <p>Cherkizovo says that the sausages contain 90% chicken meat and they do not contain nitrite.</p> <p>The Cherkizovo Group is one of the largest suppliers of KFC. The restaurants have adopted high standards of quality and food safety and all its products must strictly comply with the requirements of the legislation of the Russian Federation.</p> <p>At the end of 2017, the Cherkizovo Group received the status of strategic partner of KF? and an annual award for suppliers. 1627	UK's pork exports down by 17% in May	The United Kingdom has exported 17% less pork in May compared to year-earlier levels, shipments amounted to 15,800 tonnes, according to the latest data offered by HMRC and analyzed by the Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).	<p>Imports of fresh and frozen pork also declined by 12% year-on-year during May, down to 35,600 tonnes.</p> <p>In terms of value, UK pork exports totaled £22.5 million in the fifth month of 2018, 15% below year earlier levels. The US was the only major market to record an increase in value, growing by 24% year-on-year, to £3.7 million.</p> <p>Rebecca Oborne, analyst at AHDB, says that the country reported declines in pork shipments to all its major markets.</p> <p>UK's pork exports to China went down by 18% compared to year-earlier levels. Meanwhile, shipments to Hong Kong also plumeted, this reflecing a low import demand on the Chinese market so far.</p> <p>Pork shipments were down also to the EU countries, the decline reported was 18% in May 2018 compared to year-earlier levels, down to 9,800 tonnes.</p> <p>Oborne said that shipment to Denmark were the lowest this year, with volumes halving at 1,400 tonnes.</p> <p>On the other hand, trade with Italy was exceptionally strong in May 2017, and this year the reported figure for May was more in-line with the long-term trend at 100 tonnes, which is 20% of the year-earlier volume.</p> <p>Furthermore, there was also a significant increase in pork shipments to the US. 1628	90 cases of Salmonella Reading infections reported in the United States	An outbreak of Salmonella Reading infections linked to raw turkey products has been detected in 26 states and sickened at least 90 people, of which 40 have been hospitalized.	<p>The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and public health officials are currently investigating the case, while the US Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (USDA-FSIS) is monitoring the outbreak.</p> <p>According to CDC, illnesses caused by Salmonella have been reported in Alaska, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Wisconsin.</p> <p>The CDC says that people got sick because of raw turkey products from a variety of sources contaminated with Salmonella Reading.</p> <p>In interviews, ill people report eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different locations. Two ill people lived in a household where raw turkey pet food was fed to pets.</p> <p>The outbreak strain has been identified in samples taken from raw turkey pet food, raw turkey products, and live turkeys. 1629	Hong Kong suspends poultry imports from a region in France	Authorities from Hong Kong have imposed a ban on the import of poultry meat and poultry products from Val-d'Oise Department in France.	<p>The Centre for Food Safety (CFS) of the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department said the decision was based on a notification received from the World Organisation for Animal Health (OIE) about an outbreak of low-pathogenic H7N7 avian influenza in Val-d'Oise Department in France.</p> <p>The CFS has instructed the trade to suspend import of poultry meat and products, including poultry eggs, from the department with immediate effect to protect public health in Hong Kong.</p> <p>A CFS spokesman said that Hong Kong imported about 2 000 tonnes of chilled and frozen poultry meat and 420 000 poultry eggs from France in the first three months of this year.</p> <p>"The CFS has contacted the French authorities over the issue and will closely monitor information issued by the OIE on avian influenza outbreaks. 1630	Spanish pork is at its lowest price in the last 5 years	Packers and pork producers are finding it more difficult to get agreements driven by international markets.	<p>Spain, the fourth-largest pork producer in the world, is having a hard time to keep up with the evolution of the global market.<br />The Spanish pork industry is affected by the low demand for pork products on the Chinese market and the producers are surfing around their break-even point. "The cost of production for the first six months of 2018 has been around of 1.04–1.05 €/kg average. On the packers side the profit per market hog is between 2.27 and 3.4€ average", explains Mercedes Vega, Genesus General Director for Spain, Italy & Portugal, in a market report.<br />Last year, Spain has reported a pig population of about 49.6 million pigs and 4.25 million tons of pork produced in the country. "The packing plants are experienced a lot of tension in the market, mainly because of changes on China’s market which have decelerated its pork demand damming the volume of stored pork. There are a lot of uncertainty about pork exports outside the EU causing these lower prices domestically. It seems like right now the packers are starting to lose money", added Mercedes Vega.<br />There is more demand than offer from the packing plants, since they need to cover a minimum volume in order to avoid higher loses, on the other hand, the packers are facing the frozen storages stock. On the other hand, a cool summer has pushed up the weight of slaughtered pigs, which created a strange situation in the market. 1631	Australian red meat promoted in Brussels	The FTA with EU is seen as one of Australia's biggest trade agreements once concluded.	<p>Meat and Livestock Australia's mission in Brussels have organized its annual barbeque party in order to promote the country's red meat products. This year's event was focused on the trade talks recently open between the Australia and EU. This year’s BBQ menu was influenced by the old European cuisine and the guests were welcomed with Mediterranean and Spanish tapas flavors, Brasserie style cooking and the traditional English Sunday roast used for inspiration.<br />MLA Europe international business manager Josh Anderson said the BBQ had become an important fixture on the MLA Europe activity calendar especially this year, given the positive momentum around trade talks.</p> <p>“The BBQ is not only a showcase of our high-quality red meat that Australia wants to supply to Europe and a celebration of our farmers who produce it but an important event promoting the merits of liberalized trade in Europe to a hugely influential crowd. MLA has worked hard to build this network of contacts in Europe who are in encouragement of greater trade with Australia. The support shown at our event is a true reflection of our industry and government’s ongoing activities in the market,” Josh Anderson said.<br />The Australian Government estimates that a trade agreement with the EU would open the door to a market of half a billion consumers and a GDP of US$17.3 trillion - making it one of Australia's biggest trade agreements once concluded.<br />Two-way trade in goods exceeded $68 billion in 2017. Yet while a lucrative market, the EU’s continued protectionist stance towards agricultural imports has restricted Australia’s ability to respond to market demands and these trading conditions have remained unchanged for 40 years. <br />The EU is Australia's second largest trading partner and third largest export destination and was the country’s largest source of foreign investment in 2017.<br />The talks were officially opened in June and Australia's red meat industry has high hopes on a trade deal with EU.<br />For beef, Australia currently has access to a country-specific quota of only 7,150 tonnes, as well as shared access to a 45,000-tonne global grain-fed beef quota - which in combination represent 0.2% of total EU beef consumption. For sheepmeat/goatmeat, Australia’s country-specific quota is currently just 19,186 tonnes or less than 2% of total EU sheepmeat consumption.<br />"The launch of FTA negotiations with the EU provides a significant opportunity to revisit Australia’s red meat access to the European market for the first time in over forty years. The EU is a major consumer of imported meat - with the European Commission identifying an ongoing requirement for both imported beef and sheepmeat due to deficits in domestic supply. While Australia is ideally positioned to help service this market requirement via dedicated supply chains, our access is limited by the EU’s highly restrictive import regime. 1632	E.coli outbreak investigated in Norway	So far, eight people, with ages between 4 and 75, have been affected by the infection.	<p>Norwegian authorities are investigating possible sources of an outbreak of E. coli which has affected eight people reports <a href="https://www.foodsafetynews.com/2018/07/e-coli-outbreak-sickens-8-in-norway-officials-search-for-source/#.W1Qio8JDPIU">Food Safety News</a> portal.<br />The illnesses began last month, with patients spread across the country, and the source is still unknown. People can become infected from E. coli bacteria by eating or drinking contaminated food or water, and contact with infected animals or people who have the illness.<br />The sick people are between 4 and 75 years old and they live in Aust-Agder, Akershus, Oslo, Oppland, Vestfold, Hordaland and Trondelag.<br />Local authorities, Veterinaerinstituttet (Veterinary Institute) and Mattilsynet (Food Safety Authority) are helping with the investigation, which includes patient surveys and lab tests on samples taken from patients’ homes.<br />Last year, Norway has been confronted with three other E.coli outbreaks that affected 10 people. It was the first year since 2013 that there had been an outbreak associated with the pathogen in the country.<br />Symptoms vary but often include bloody diarrhoea and abdominal cramps, usually beginning two to five days after exposure to the bacteria. Most people recover within 10 days. However, people in high-risk groups can suffer severe symptoms and side effects that result in hospitalization and sometimes death. High-risk groups include young children, adults older than 65, people such as cancer patients and transplant recipients who have weakened immune systems, and pregnant women.</p> <p>The bacteria is destroyed by thoroughly cooking foods until all parts reach a temperature of 70 degrees Celsius or higher. 1633	Bell Food Group invests in the cultured meat sector	"We believe this technology can become a true alternative for environment-conscious consumers", company's CEO says.	<p>Netherland's Mosa Meat have received €7.5 million in a fundraising round in which Swiss meat producer Bell Food Group played an important role, reports Innovation Origins magazine.<br />Mosa Meat is a company that presented in 2013 the first beef burger made directly from cow cells and it is also considered the first important player in the European cultured meat sector.<br />"Meat demand is soaring and in future won’t be met by livestock agriculture alone. We believe this technology can become a true alternative for environment-conscious consumers, and we are delighted to bring our know-how and expertise of the meat business into this strategic partnership with Mosa Meat", declared Lorenz Wyss, CEO of Bell Food Group, after his company joined the Dutch start-up.<br />Mosa Meat, a spin-off company from Maastricht University and Brightlands Maastricht Health Campus has raised €7.5M to bring cultured meat to market in three years time.
