8311 Gilberto Tomazoni, JBS: Food security needs to be on the agenda of the climate debate Gilberto Tomazoni was one of the panelists at the Planeta Campo Talks special COP30 event in São Paulo, where he addressed the issue of food waste, which represents a challenge to global food security.
"We cannot discuss climate and energy transition without discussing food security, poverty and social development. For me, these discussions are interconnected", said JBS Global CEO Gilberto Tomazoni during the Planeta Campo Talks Special COP30, an event held in the auditorium of the Escola Superior de Propaganda e Marketing (ESPM), in São Paulo (SP).

During the panel "Ensuring food security while preserving the environment", Tomazoni stressed the need to integrate discussions on climate and energy transition with the issue of food security. The JBS Global CEO highlighted the importance of Brazil in leading this global debate, emphasizing the need to increase food production in a sustainable way to meet growing global demand. "Brazil is at the center of this issue and needs to lead this discussion. The solution is to produce more food and in a more sustainable way. There is no other choice", he said.

Tomazoni also addressed the issue of food waste, which represents a challenge for global food security, and the importance of supporting small producers in adopting more sustainable practices. "There is no point in demanding that small producers adopt new practices if they are not able to do so. If we do not resolve these issues, negotiations will continue in closed rooms, with no real impact on people's lives", he warned.

The Planeta Campo Talks Special COP30 event brought together leaders from various sectors to discuss crucial issues for the success of the United Nations Climate Conference, which will be held for the first time in Brazil in November, in the city of Belém (PA).
    Industry adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2025-03-25 00:30:14 2025-07-27 04:02:25 Details Edit Delete
5942 Dawn Meats to invest €100m in Net Zero climate commitment Dawn Meats has announced a substantial new plan which will see the meat processor target Net Zero operational emissions across the business by 2040, and work towards a Net Zero supply chain as soon as possible .
An initial €100m investment across four key areas: environment, farming, food and society will support the delivery of these Net Zero targets. This approach takes account of the entire supply chain across Scope 1, 2, and 3 emissions while also aligning to the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

The 2040 Net Zero commitment will be structured with a supporting near-term goal. By 2030 Dawn Meats is aiming to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 59%, through investment in new technology to transform plant infrastructure, transport, thermal energy generation and refrigeration systems,

The Scope 3 supply chain target ambition will be increased to align with 1.5°C, placing the company on a net zero trajectory. Ongoing supplier engagement to reduce emissions and improve farm efficiencies will continue via innovative farming projects and knowledge sharing events. The company will continue to enhance production efficiencies, improve carcase utilisation and derive greater value from their livestock products, which will further reduce emissions intensity.

Other targets include ensuring 100% of their plastic packaging is reusable, recyclable or compostable and sourcing 100% of their cattle and sheep from Bord Bia assured farms in Ireland, and Red Tractor assured farms in the United Kingdom.

Plan Four Zero is the culmination of years of significant work Dawn Meats has undertaken to understand and combat emissions in the agriculture and food processing industry. They were the first European beef and lamb processor to set science-based targets and measure its progress on externally verified sustainability goals.

The Group’s most recent sustainability report highlighted a 248,000-tonne reduction in greenhouse gases from its operations and supply chain in 2020, while on-farm Scope 3 emissions reduced by 189,000t. For the year ending 2021, the Group achieved a 40% reduction in Scope 1 and 2 emissions and a 15% reduction in Scope 3 emissions intensity.

Niall Browne, CEO of Dawn Meats and Dunbia, said:
"Addressing climate change is one of the key challenges of our time. Dawn Meats has an opportunity to continue to positively impact the supply chain as well as our communities and environment, and a commitment to achieving net zero operational emissions by 2040 is a goal which is the culmination of significant progress to date. Our leadership and wider team across Ireland and the UK are fully focused on delivering this goal and while we are proud of our achievements to date, we recognise there is much still to do."

Gill Higgins, Group Sustainability Director at Dawn Meats and Dunbia, said:
"We have consistently set ambitious targets when it comes to addressing climate change, which is necessary to face the enormous challenge in front of us. Through working with our primary producers and wider supply chain partners on innovative approaches to food production and packaging we have an opportunity to address Scope 3 emissions in a meaningful way. These are emissions which are amongst the most difficult to combat, but industry collaboration is vital in working toward Net Zero."

Dawn Meats is working collaboratively with farmers across two demonstration farms in Ireland to investigate the best ways of producing sustainable, high-quality meat. At Newford Farm in Athenry research and development on sustainable suckler beef production is supported by Teagasc and McDonald’s. Since the farm’s opening in 2015 over 8,000 farmers have visited Newford and gained insights into sustainable beef production.

In 2022, in partnership with Teagasc and Shinagh Estates, Dawn Meats established a Dairy Calf to Beef Demonstration Farm, building on the learnings from multiple calf to beef projects undertaken between Teagasc and Dawn Meats since 2008. The farm consists of 112 ha of grazing infrastructure and slatted floor housing, which will allow the dairy calf to beef unit to take all sourced calves and finish to the required livestock specification, meeting market requirements. Newford and Ballyvadin Farms are participating in the Signpost Farms initiative run by Teagasc.
    Technology adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro 2022-12-14 04:30:54 2025-07-27 04:02:24 Details Edit Delete

2562 Germany overtakes Spain as the largest supplier of pork in China Imports from Germany increased by 8% whilst Spanish exports have decreased at the same percentage.
Germany is the leading supplier of pork in the Chinese market after overtaking Spain during last year. Germany added 8% to the volumes exported to China, while Spain reported a similar decrease. In 2018, China imported 1.2 million tonnes of fresh / frozen pork, down by 2% compared to the previous year, according to data presented by the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB).
Imports from the United Kingdom registered an increase of almost 4,000 tons, to reach a total of 50,000 tons during the year. An increase in exports was also reported by Brazil, which shipped almost 150,000 tonnes of pork in China, with 100 thousand tonnes more than in 2017. At the same time, there was a decrease of 48% in pork imports from the US due to the trade war that placed an additional 50% tariff on American pork and meat offal. In general, the pressure faced by import volumes in China last year reflects both the trade war and the low domestic prices at the beginning of the year. In more recent months, the interruption of live transport in response to African swine fever has caused pork prices to rise in the south, reflecting a shortage of fresh meat. However, it seems that there are still enough frozen meat supplies available in the northern regions to avoid an increase in demand for imported products, says the analysis. Nevertheless, different analysts are expecting a significant decline in Chinese pork production later this year, which will drive up the imports.
    Market 2019-02-11 10:03:56 2025-07-27 04:02:16 Details Edit Delete
845 Fish and seeafood trade rate to decrease in the next 7 years FAO predicts a slow in demand for fishery products until 2025 due to high prices, slower growth of fishery production and stronger domestic demand.
World trade in fish for human consumption will reach 46 million tons in the live-weight equivalent in 2025, up 18% from the average taken between 2013 and 2015, according to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) of the United Nations. Total global seafood consumption is projected to increase by 31 million tons by 2025 to reach 178 million tons.

People in Asia, Oceania, Latin American, and the Caribbean will be responsible global per capita consumption which is expected to move up 8% from 20.2 kilograms currently to21.8 kilograms by 2025. A the end of this period, the increase in demand will slow down as the availability of fish products will be countered by the increasing cost of seafood compared with meat and chicken, predicts FAO experts.
Top three exporters by 2025 will be China, Vietnam and Norway and the biggest exports markets are to be found in Europe, Japan, and North America, as well as Indonesia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Brazil, and select countries in the Middle East and Africa.
    Market 2018-02-25 12:19:07 2025-07-27 04:02:12 Details Edit Delete
1167 EU-Mexico trade deal can boost the European exports of pork and poultry A joint statement on the modernization of EU-Mexico Global Agreement is giving hope for meat producers in Europe who are expecting to export more pork and poultry in the North-American country.
Ireland officials are showing confidence that the new EU-Mexico trade deal could increase the exports of pork, poultry, and dairy for Irish and European producers.
The Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine Michael Creed has welcomed the joint statement by the EU and Mexico to the effect that they have reached an agreement in principle on trade and investment in the context of the modernization of the EU-Mexico Global Agreement., reports Agriland magazine.
Full details of the agreement are still to be set but at the first glance, EU producers are going to have a significant advantage in front of the competitors in the Mexican market.
Duty-free trade for virtually all pork products after five years has been provided for, while, in the case of poultry, extensive liberalization will also take place over the period of the agreement. Also, it has been agreed on full protection of 99% of European Union Geographical Indications has also been assured.
"I hope this agreement will allow these efforts to bear fruit in the short-term, which is of course vitally important against the background of Brexit", declared minister Creed. 3658 France goes crazy for organic meat However, the market offers a mixed picture, with meat consumption declining and organic products increasing their presence in the consumer's choice.
More than 70% of the French people are consuming organic meat at least occasionally, as against 59% in 2015, according to a survey by Ifop for the Organic Commission at Interbev. In 2018, the French organic meat market expanded. In detail, it posted €374 million for bovine meat (up 18% on 2017), €109 million for pork meat (+2.9% in a year) and €65 million for ovine meat (+18.2%), according to figures presented by SIAL organizers. Nevertheless, meat consumption is declining in the country, with beef being the hardest hit category. Beef consumption has dropped by 6.5% in the last 5 years, despite the fact that France is the second-biggest bovine meat producer in Europe with a herd of 19 million head and 1.4 million equivalent tonnes of carcass.
A recent survey by Ifop for CIWF France, revealing that 85% of consumers say that they are prepared to eat meat less frequently, and pay more for meat reared with more care for animal welfare. However, pork (33 kg/person/year) and sheepmeat (2.4 kg/person/year) consumption have remained stable over the last couple of years.
This mixed picture is forcing the entire supply chain to reorganize and start to shift upmarket in all of its products. “Meeting the expectations of society in meat production is a priority objective for the French livestock and meat sector professionals,” confirms Interbev.
Part of the French culinary heritage, tripe consumption remains strong among inhabitants, with 43% of French households regularly buy tripe products, mainly those derived from beef (41% of total volume), followed by veal (26%), pork (28%, and finally lamb (5%).
    Market 2020-03-05 10:04:19 2025-07-27 04:02:09 Details Edit Delete

3387 China lifts restrictions on US poultry imports A ban was set 4 years ago after avian influenza outbreaks occurred in some parts of the United States in 2013 and 2014.
China took a step back in the trade war with the US and announced that is lifting all restrictions on US poultry imports. A ban was placed more than 4 years ago after avian influenza outbreaks occurred in some parts of the United States in 2013 and 2014. However, since March 2017 no new cases have been reported in the United States. "After a comprehensive assessment, China believes that the avian flu epidemic in the United States has been effectively controlled, and the country's poultry meat regulatory system meets the requirements of relevant laws and regulations in China.

The poultry industry in the United States is relatively developed, with its poultry output ranking first in the world," said officials with the General Administration of Customs and the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
By that, China intends to diversify its sources for poultry imports and to secure the need for animal protein in the domestic market. Since August 2018, multiple ASF outbreaks have reduced the national swine inventory by almost 50% creating a deficit of pork in this market. Imports of alternative proteins (beef, sheepmeat, poultry) are high as the pork prices have skyrocketed.
    Market 2019-11-15 06:07:57 2025-07-27 04:01:55 Details Edit Delete

EU officials have warned poultry producers to step up surveillance against possible outbreaks of avian flu among wild and domestic birds. "EU countries are being urged to step up surveillance and biosafety measures to protect themselves against possible new outbreaks of bird flu this year," a report issued this week said. The disease is highly contagious to birds, but the risks of transmission to humans are considered low. However, in the past cases of transmission from infected birds to humans have occurred. "However, to minimize the risk of transmission to humans, people are advised not to touch dead birds without wearing adequate personal protective equipment," said the same report.
The last outbreaks of avian flu were reported in January by Poland, Hungary, Romania, and Germany. 4798 Russian pig producers take a new market approach As domestic consumption is increasing, producers are looking to add high-quality meat to the market.
The pig price in Russia is 128.8 Roubles per live kg (US$1.75). This has increased a little over the past few weeks. Covid travel restrictions have meant many more Russians taking holidays in Russia, increasing local demand for pork. Also, there have been some losses in production due to ASF and PRRS outbreaks (in some of the larger companies) who have gone to the market to fill gaps in production.
On the other hand, taste and consistency are the two major reasons that people continue to buy a food product, producing and selling pork that is consistently tasty seems to be a good idea for maximizing profit, according to the latest market report from Genesus. "One market that tends to get overlooked in many places is the domestic market. Selling more and for a higher price in local markets is the easiest way to increase profit. In Russia, again as in many countries, the perception of what the market is and the reality are two different things. We hear everywhere from slaughter plant buyers and marketeers 'we need leaner pork' and also 'the consumer will not pay more for better quality. Then when you look at the market, the highest-priced cuts are the fattest and tastiest! So clearly Russian consumers, as everywhere, will pay more for fatter tastier pork," said Simon Grey, Genesus General Manager for Russia, CIS and Europe.
He offered AgroEco's example, as the company located in Voronezh added in the market pork with better quality. "AgroEco use Genesus for part of its own production and has a Genesus Nucleus to provide breeding pigs for itself, with the surplus being sold into the Russian market. Part of the Nucleus is a herd of pure Genesus Duroc, which is the recognized market leader for the tastiest pork. AgroEco sells all the pure Duroc Sired Pigs through its own retail outlets at a significant premium over 'standard pork'. Local demand is high, with the Genesus Duroc Sired meat regularly selling out. To guarantee supply it needs to be forwards ordered.
Yes this may be only a very small % of the Russian market, but an excellent sign that producing a constantly a tasty product that consumers want more of and are willing to pay more for, does work," he added.
    Market 2021-07-08 05:44:10 2025-07-27 04:01:48 Details Edit Delete

3172 Serbia reports 4 possible cases of ASF 114 pigs were culled to prevent the disease from spreading.
Four possible cases of African Swine Fever (ASF) have been reported by Serbia to the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). Three of the suspected cases were located near Belgrade and another one in the district of Podunavski. 114 pigs were culled to prevent the disease from spreading, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.
A common supposition is that infected pork coming from Bulgaria or Romania are at the origin of these outbreaks. Bulgaria has already culled 130,000 pigs in one month after the virus has reached industrial farms. 30 outbreaks have been reported in the country in the last couple of months and authorities have initiated the emergency plan in several areas where pigs found in the backyard farms are to be culled.
In Romania, there have been 300 outbreaks reported only in July, mostly in backyard farms but the authorities have not taken any severe measures so far.
For the Bulgarian pig industry, the situation is more dramatic then it seems as the country may lose all of its pig herd of 600,000 head. Recent outbreaks have been reported also in Poland, Moldova and Russia.

Since May, the UN's Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) and OIE experts have started a series of meetings to warn about the risk of the ASF virus spreading to the Balkans
    Industry 2019-08-13 05:57:03 2025-07-27 04:01:44 Details Edit Delete
1369 UK free range egg producers to provide additional information about their products With effect from 1 June, free range egg producers will be required to provide additional information on the documentation that accompanies their eggs when they are collected from farm, according to UK's National Farmers' Union..
The EU Egg Marketing Standards Regulations provide that where housing orders are in place, eggs from free range systems are able to be marketed as free range for a maximum period of 16 weeks.

The 16-week period applies from the point at which a flock is placed into the free range shed. As such, it is necessary to know when such placing occurred. The APHA, in conjunction with industry, has set out how the new requirements can most practicably be met by adopting an approach that is workable for industry and enforceable by APHA.

It has been agreed that, with effect from 1 June 2018, producers/packers will voluntarily include the date of placing of the flock in that house on all of their transport documents.

The information is provided by the free range producer on a voluntary basis, however Defra will consider the need to amend legislation in the future in the light of compliance with this voluntary approach.
    Industry 2018-06-05 06:07:08 2025-07-27 04:01:40 Details Edit Delete
3780 China to remain the world's main consumer of beef The Asian country is expected to import 2.2 million tonnes of beef in 2020.
In 2019, China has increased its beef consumption by 11% to reach 8.33 million tonnes, with per capita consumption jumping from 4.88 kg in 2016 to 5.95 kg in 2019. Statistical data shows that beef output has increased by 4% last year, reaching a total volume of 6.67 million tonnes, leaving room for beef import volumes of 1,66 million tonnes. That represents an increase of 60% in beef imports compared with 2018 and the trend is expected to continue this year as pig meat shortage appeared in the Chinese market due to the ASF crisis is pushing consumers to find alternatives for pork.
For 2020, analysts are expecting a total volume of beef imports of 2.2 million tonnes to cover the demand in the Chinese market. Even with a high impact reported in the market, due to lockdown amid coronavirus outbreak, China has imported 300,000 tonnes of beef in January and February, according to data presented by beef to China.
The situation is also acknowledged by Meat and Livestock Australia (MLA), who issued a report on the Chinese consumer needs in times of crisis and beyond.
During the Covid-19 crisis, 79% of Chinese consumers have increased home cooking, while only 4% have reported a decline in home-cooked meals. 32% of affluent Chinese consumers have reported an increase in beef consumption ad only 5% have reduced their intake.

"Meal preparation habits - increased scratch home-cooking with fresh produce and meat plus some trialling of new beef cooking methods:

- mandatory home isolation meant consumers relied mostly on home-cooking from scratch, interspersed with some ready-to-eat or ready-to-cook foods for convenience.
- most consumers report increased consumption of fresh meat and produce due to the important role these are believed to play in delivering health and nutrition, which in turn supports immunity.
- consumers mostly fell back on traditional, familiar beef dishes associated with winter, nutrition and comfort such as soups, wet slow-cook dishes and stir fry. However, a significant proportion broadened their repertoires to include some more western-style pan fry as well as, grilling and roasting.
- during home isolation, many consumers say they rediscovered the joy of cooking, and many younger ones did so for the first time, having more time and motivation to try different dishes and cooking methods for variety.

Role of red meat in diets - greater consumption of beef as a more nutritious, safer protein and key contributor to a healthy balanced diet:

- while our respondents were already regular beef consumers before COVID-19, during the outbreak a third reported consuming even more beef as well as lamb, and less pork, poultry and fish.
- these affluent, well-educated consumers prioritize beef over other proteins due to their understanding of its higher nutritional value, enabling it to better support overall health and immunity.

Meat purchase considerations - Higher priority on safety, quality, nutrition and country of origin which all underpin stronger health:

- pre-COVID-19, consumers’ top beef purchase considerations for home consumption were safety, freshness, quality and country of origin. The outbreak led them to place even more importance on these but particularly enhancing immunity, country of origin and naturalness.
- consumers turned away from buying frozen beef, preferring chilled and fresh product, which they consider more nutritious.
- a majority believe they will continue to pay more attention to health and immunity for themselves and their families after the outbreak ends, with meat such as beef and lamb playing a key role in delivering a nutritious, balanced diet," shows MLA's report. However, Australia's beef market share may see a large decline this year, as the national cattle inventory is expected to drop by double digits in 2020. That may leave room for other beef exporters to enter the Chinese market. Over the first two months of this year, the total volume of China's beef imports from minor sources was 11,457 tonnes, 82% higher than the volume reported in the same period last year. Ireland and the US were the top two minor countries to ship beef to China, followed by Ukraine, Kazakhstan, Bolivia, Panama, Namibia, and Hungary.
    Market 2020-04-10 10:50:28 2025-07-27 04:01:40 Details Edit Delete
