3743 | AMMP urge FSIS: "Limit the visits of your inspectors" | The risk associated with covid-19 infection is forcing American meat processors to ask food safety inspectors to limit their travel between the plants. |
There has been a growing concern in recent days about FSIS inspectors possibly spreading the COVID-19 virus as they travel between plants on their daily assignments, as well as the number of inspection personnel coming into plants, which made American Associaton of Meat Processors (AAMP) address these concerns with FSIS.

Inspector travel between plants

To help mitigate the possibility of spreading the virus from one plant to another, AAMP made several suggestions to the agency on proper protocols for inspection personnel. It is crucial that small plants do whatever to prevent the spread of the virus. Social distancing is a challenge due to space issues, so this means that having policies in place for staff, as well as inspection personnel and delivery drivers, is critical during this time, recommended Chris Young, AAMP Executive Director.

AMMP suggested some preventive measures for inspection personnel and meat processors in the country such as:

- Have a separate frock for each plant visit. Leave the frock at the plant it is being used in. Inspectors may not have enough frocks available, so you may need to offer one of yours to them to use while they are in your plant.
- Have the inspector wipe down their helmet with sanitizer before entering the plant to perform their duties. You should be prepared to provide the sanitizer for your inspector to do this.

"The likelihood of an inspector transporting the virus from one plant to another on their frock or helmet is very low, but the possibility does exist. If this is something you want to enforce then you should have a conversation with your inspector and ask them if they are willing to follow these steps. FSIS continues to have regular phone calls with inspection personnel. There will be another call in the next few days at which time our concerns will be shared with them," said Mr. Young.

Inspection personnel in plants

Another concern appeared in the last few days is the number of inspection personnel in plants. AAMP has asked FSIS to limit the personnel in plants to only those doing essential inspection duties. "I was told last week by the agency, and again in a phone call yesterday, that they agree and are trying to make sure inspection personnel understand that. This will be covered in their upcoming phone call as well. There should be no FSA’s going on at this time unless they are a “for cause” FSA. All other scheduled or risk base FSA’s should not be happening at this point; this will keep traffic in your plant down," added Chris Young.

| 1 | Industry | 2020-03-27 05:48:05 | 2025-08-10 06:16:55 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2707 | Tonnies targets sustainable development of livestock farming with new feeding concept | The German company launched TONISO feeding which reduces nitrogen excretions via liquid manure. |
As the market and innovation leader for pork and beef in Germany, Tönnies is working for the sustainable development of the sector. In the last few months, the German company achieved a milestone in the sustainable development of livestock farming.
"With our support, the Chamber of Agriculture in North-Rhine Westphalia has developed a new feeding concept. With TONISO feeding (animal-optimised nitrate and soya-reduced feeding concept), nitrogen excretions(including phosphorus excretions) via liquid manure have been considerably reduced. Up to 30% less nitrogen production is possible", informs the company in a press release.
According to Tonnies sources, the aim for this new feeding concept is to halve the proportion of soya in piglet and pre-fattening feeding; in the final fattening process, use of soya can be eliminated under certain circumstances so that a reduction of the proportion of soya by more than 50% is possible over the entire fattening process.
"We bear a joint responsibility for the sustainable development of the meat industry. Because of this, we are collaborating with agriculture", says Clemens Tonnies, Managing Director of the company.
The German meat producer has a new strategy to strengthen acceptance in the German core market. "We stand for enjoyable consumption of meat as part of a healthy diet. With this, we are responding to consumer questions about animal welfare, farming and food safety. For example, we are encouraging politicians to enforce widespread video surveillance of areas which are relevant to animal welfare. With transparency, traceability and open dialogue we are facing up to demands from society", explained Clemens Tonnies.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-03-15 04:43:40 | 2025-08-10 06:17:27 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2348 | New Zealand's beef farmers encouraged to follow the Mp. bovis eradication programme |
The latest Beef + Lamb New Zealand TAG report on the Mycoplasma bovis (Mp. bovis) eradication programme could further encourage farmers to fight against the disease.
"Although it is still early days, and this is a complex disease, we are pleased by the progress outlined in the TAG report. The progress so far illustrates the value of a collaborative approach to fighting Mp. bovis with Government and industry working in partnership.
Farmers and rural communities also deserve credit for stepping up to the plate during the eradication programme. We know this has been a difficult, uncertain and often upsetting time for farmers and their families, especially those directly affected because people’s livelihoods are at stake.", says B+LNZ chairman Andrew Morrison.
37 farms were identified as affected by the disease and the programme is leading to the largest mass animal slaughter in the country's history, with 126,000 cattle that must be culled. Mycoplasma Bovis can lead to conditions such as udder infection, pneumonia, and arthritis in affected cattle, but does not pose a food safety risk or any risk to humans.
The authorities are going to contribute with NZ$ 591 million ($410 million) to cover the losses resulted in the eradication programme.
"Our view has always been that eradication was only on the table for a limited time and once it was off the table, it would be off forever, so we had to give this a go. Our hope is that with a united effort, we can overcome this challenge and emerge stronger than ever. We can then focus on learning everything we can from this response to make us better prepared for the future", added Morrison.
B+LNZ and DairyNZ will be holding consultations with dairy and beef farmers from late January 2019 to get their feedback on the best timeframe to make the eradication programme repayments, according to MeatExportNZ website. It is anticipated the beef cattle M. bovis levy will be collected via a specific biosecurity levy at the point of processing.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-12-18 04:07:59 | 2025-08-10 06:21:12 | Details Edit Delete | |||
5601 | U.S. settles claims against poultry producers over worker treatment | Three of the largest U.S. poultry processors have agreed to settle claims by the Justice Department over their alleged longstanding effort to share information about workers in order to drive down compensation. Cargill, Sanderson Farms and Wayne Farms have agreed to pay more than $84 million in restitution to workers harmed by the information sharing to resolve civil antitrust lawsuits, according to Reuters. |
The government also sued and reached a settlement including a data consulting firm, Webber, Meng, Sahl and Co.

"Through a brazen scheme to exchange wage and benefit information, these poultry processors stifled competition and harmed a generation of plant workers who face demanding and sometimes dangerous conditions to earn a living," said Doha Mekki of the Justice Department's Antitrust Division in a statement.

Under the agreement, Cargill Meat Solutions is to pay $15 million, Sanderson will pay $38.3 million and Wayne $31.5 million.

The settlement was filed on Monday in a U.S. District Court in Maryland shortly after the lawsuits were filed.

Wayne Farms said it was glad to resolve the matter and the agreement shows its commitment to workers and farmers. Cargill denied wrongdoing but said it settled with the Justice Department to avoid litigation and distractions.

Under that agreement, the companies will not be allowed to lower the base pay of chicken growers, but will be allowed to offer incentives. The agreement also prohibits retaliation for growers who raise antitrust concerns with the government.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2022-07-27 06:06:25 | 2025-08-10 06:21:26 | Details Edit Delete | |
1830 | Tuna prices are slowly growing | Demand from retailers and other buyers has increased the prices for yellowfin tuna and skipjack. |
The prices of raw material, both yellowfin tuna and skipjack, for the production of canned tuna, rebounded from the bottom to slowly rise up again, observes Dominik Barczyk, Head of Sales for Central Europe from Frinsa, in an analysis published by Portal Spozywczy magazine.
An increase in the price of skipjack tuna from Bangkok has led to a higher price for yellowfin tuna delivered in southern Europe, mentioned Barczyk.
The prices of yellowfin tuna in Abidjan, Côte d'Ivoire and Seychelles have again risen to EUR 2,500 per tone, while in Italy and Spain prices are slowly heading down to EUR 2,700 / t.
Skipjack tuna caught in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans is more expensive, with prices reaching EUR 1,200 / t, while in Spain, even offers of EUR 1,400 / t appeared. The demand in the Spanish market is adding weekly €50 to €100 for a ton of skipjack tuna.
"As we have previously observed volatile tuna prices, it is now difficult to judge how the price will develop. 7605 | Australia: Diesel prices impacting farm decision making | In the agricultural industry, one of the largest costs impacting profitability is diesel. The costs of running on-farm machinery and trucking livestock can put a huge amount of pressure on farm businesses, according to Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA). |
Here, the MLA Market Insights team delves into input costs and how they’re relative to profitability. For example, in 2020 and 2021 when cattle and sheep prices were the highest on record, inputs costs contributed to a larger proportion of business margins.

In 2020, diesel prices averaged approximately 108¢/L – at this time livestock prices were around 500¢/kg liveweight (lwt). When compared to 2023, average diesel prices were at 183¢/L and livestock prices dipped to around 250¢/kg lwt.

Over the last four years, diesel prices have increased by 70%. This increase is another added rising cost for businesses which has become a struggle to keep up with.

Diesel prices are currently about 5% above those of 2023. These prices are unlikely to ease, with inflation expected to maintain at 3.6% due to the cost-of-living. The result of these increased costs may encourage producers to weigh up the benefits of purchasing better quality cattle that is further away or average quality cattle that has lower transportation costs.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-08-01 00:10:33 | 2025-08-10 06:22:22 | Details Edit Delete | |

2867 | Statistic data shows improvement in Welsh lamb carcase classification | More and more farmers are producing meat to the highest market specification, according to the data presented by Welsh processors for 2018. |
Statistic data released recently by Welsh processors for last year shows improvement in Welsh lamb carcase classification, with more and more farmers producing meat to the highest market specification. During processing, lambs are graded according to the EUROP classification grid, which denotes whether animals meet the correct conformation and fat coverage.
The statistics released by Welsh processors for 2018 show a positive performance by the industry. This includes significant reductions in the numbers of animals which were over-fat and continued increases in the numbers which hit the highest desired conformation.
68.1% of all lambs from Welsh abattoirs hit the sought-after 2 or 3L fat grades, up from 64.5% the previous year. In terms of conformation, 40.2% fell into the highest ‘E’ or ‘U’ classes (up from 37.9% in 2017) with only 11.2% classified in the lower ‘O’ or ‘P’ ranges.

"The prevalence of carcases with less fat coverage could be partly due to producers presenting their lambs earlier following the dry summer weather conditions of 2018 and limited availability of forage. However, the figures on both fat and conformation also show that Welsh farmers are focusing on what the modern consumer requires and adapting their practices accordingly. Different outlets, such as supermarkets, export and catering, may require different types of lambs. In order to achieve the highest return, farmers will ensure that the lambs sold are the correct type for those markets", explained Glesni Phillips, Data Analyst at Hybu Cig Cymru – Meat Promotion Wales (HCC).
In the last couple of years, the trend was to achieve higher grades and that reflects the increased use of rams and ewes with superior genetics for conformation traits, she added. Also, farmers have benefited from HCC’s Livestock Selection courses which increase understanding of the needs of the modern consumer.

| 1 | Industry | 2019-05-09 07:38:02 | 2025-08-10 06:27:07 | Details Edit Delete | ||

The guests were welcomed by their officials from the Spanish government and representatives of INTERPORC, as China shows an interest in continuing to intensify trade relations in pig products, which they have maintained for twelve years, when Spain started exporting to the Asian country, informs Carnica magazine.
By now, INTERPORC has opened its own office in Beijing and is currently involved in different activities in the Asian country - presence in the most important food fairs in the country, meetings with importers, conferences, missions with the Chinese press etc - to promote Spanish pork and pork products in this market.
Last year, China was the second foreign market for processed and processed pork in Spain, with 332,160 tonnes and €465.8 million, accounting for 15% of total Spanish pig exports. Also, in the first seven months of 2019, Spanish pig exports to China have increased by 54% compared to the same period of 2018, with a total of 306,645 tonnes, which has meant a turnover of more than €524 million.
| 1 | Industry | 2019-10-25 11:50:07 | 2025-08-10 06:29:54 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4667 | Premium beef may find a good market in Brazil | The South American country has increased its imports of high-quality beef by 26%, according to USDA. |
American experts are expecting Brazil to become a good market for premium beef. Despite the COVID-19 crisis, last year the South American country has increased imports of premium beef by 26.3% compared to 2019. This may come as a shock, as Brazil is the second world producer of this type of meat but most of the products are exported to Asian markets.
The main exporters of this type of product to Brazil are Paraguay, Argentina, Uruguay, Australia and the United States. Brazilian ranchers are attentive to their national premium market and will inevitably participate and compete with these countries at some point. However, they still have to adapt local production to achieve the quality demanded by this demanding market.
The potential of the Brazilian beef market is currently explored also by European producers as the EU has increased exports by 1.8% last year, despite the economic downturn. Growth was especially strong in high-value markets. Export growth overall is expected to continue in 2021 (+1%), constrained by limited domestic availability and economic uncertainty, according to the latest short-term outlook from the European Commission.
| 1 | Market | 2021-05-06 10:51:57 | 2025-08-10 06:30:06 | Details Edit Delete | ||
4266 | Report: American meat and poultry industry reaches new all-time low injury rate | A newly released Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) annual report for 2019 shows U.S. meat and poultry packers and processors continued their lengthy track record of reducing worker injuries, reaching a new all-time low for injuries. |
"The BLS report proves that year after year, meat and poultry companies remain committed and have invested billions of dollars to reduce worker injuries and illnesses", said Julie Anna Potts, President and CEO of the North American Meat Institute (Meat Institute). "Our members are proud of their record to reduce workplace related injuries over the last 20 years and will continue to adopt new technologies and methods to ensure the safety and well-being of its critical infrastructure workforce".

The BLS report released final 2019 incidence rates for non-fatal occupational injuries and illnesses recorded with the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). Meat industry results improved from both 2018 and 2017 levels, reaching a new, all time industry low of 4.0 cases per 100 full-time workers (per year).

For perspective, just 10 years ago this number was 9.3, while in 1999 the incidence rate was 17.1. A twenty- year injury rate reduction from 17.1 to 9.3 to 4.0 illustrates the sustained industry trend of workplace safety improvement.

Meanwhile, in sharp contrast to this data, and in the midst of a global pandemic, anti-animal agriculture and activist groups have falsely accused the meat and poultry industry of ignoring the safety of the men and women who work in their facilities.

"Just as meat and poultry companies have proven their determination to reduce injuries, they are remaining vigilant to reduce the spread of COVID-19", said Potts. "They continue to check temperatures, provide testing, supply additional personal protection equipment such as facemasks and shields, conduct contact tracing, provide enhanced employee benefits like paid leave, and much more. Although the industry was challenged in the spring, numbers of positive cases associated with meat packing dropped significantly into the summer".

In the early 1990s, the Meat Institute declared worker safety a non-competitive issue, which encouraged member companies to collaborate to find solutions that prioritized and enhanced worker safety. The meat industry, together with OSHA and the United Food and Commercial Workers union, also developed Voluntary Ergonomic Guidelines for the Meat Packing Industry — guidelines that OSHA called a “model” for other industries. In 2019, labor and human rights, including worker safety, was identified as a key pillar in the Meat Institute’s sustainability efforts and the industry is developing additional metrics and targets for continuous improvement over the next decade.

In August, the Meat Institute and OSHA signed a two-year alliance to provide Meat Institute members, the public, and other stakeholders with information, guidance, and access to training resources that will help protect workers. During the two-year alliance, participants will develop information on recognizing coronavirus transmission risks and best practices for preventing transmission, and on challenges for exposure control in meatpacking and processing facilities. Alliance participants will also conduct outreach to small- and medium-sized facilities on available guidance and compliance assistance resources, including the On-Site Consultation Program, and will work together on other outreach activities, including providing information on OSHA’s enforcement policies and procedures relevant to the meatpacking and processing industry.
| 1 | Industry | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2020-11-19 06:46:28 | 2025-08-10 06:31:02 | Details Edit Delete | |
