2152 US lamb exports more than doubled in September The US exported 1,177 metric tons of lamb in September, the volume increasing by 106% compared to September 2017, according to data released by USDA and compiled by USMEF.
USMEF said this rise was fueled by a sharp increase in lamb variety meat exports to Mexico. Still, export value was down 12% to $1.63 million as muscle cuts continued to struggle.

Lamb muscle cut exports were just 126 mt in September, down 53% from a year ago and matching the lowest monthly volume of 2018.

Through the first three quarters of the year, lamb exports were 65% ahead of last year’s pace in volume (9,210 mt) and 16% higher in value ($17.1 million). The increase is mainly attributable to stronger variety meat demand in Mexico, but muscle cut exports showed promising growth in the Bahamas, the United Arab Emirates, Taiwan and the Philippines.
    Industry 2018-11-07 06:42:35 2025-08-05 19:54:11 Details Edit Delete
2153 Warning of a huge decline in UK's food safety in the post-Brexit era The US would insist on agricultural products being part of any deal, mentioned a former British minister.
Food safety in the post-Brexit era is a big concern for the British consumer, as the country is on the verge to open negotiations on free trade agreements with the US, Australia and New Zealand.

John Selwyn Gummer, Lord Deben, Chairman of the UK's Committee on Climate Change and former member of British government under John Mayor is worried about the way negotiations on food trade is going to be and mentioned the fact that any deal with the US part is going to be focused on food issues. "We wouldn’t treat our animals as badly as they do there… I don’t think the British people would put up with it. I’ve negotiated with them, for the whole of the EU… You have four times as much food-borne disease in the US", warned the former minister, according to Holy Rood magazine.
Gummer had responsibility for food safety during the mad cow disease epidemic in 1989–90 which eventually claimed 176 British lives. His intervention comes on the back of a long-standing debate over whether a new trade pact with the US could lead to lower food standards. Voices inside Theresa May's government expressed different views on food safety issue regarding animal welfare and hormone-treated beef increasing the uncertainties about this topics.
Not long ago, a report released by professors from University of Sussex and City and the University of London warned the public and the British authorities about the risk presented by a lift of the ban for US hormone-treated beef. "There is a triple risk here: to health, to British beef farmers’ livelihoods, and to the UK’s ability to determine its own food safety standards. Hormone use is a test case for whether the UK seeks a more sustainable food supply. Hormone use would be a stupid step towards intensive beef feeding lots," said Tim Lang, Professor of Food Policy at City, University of London.
    Industry 2018-11-07 10:52:47 2025-08-05 16:06:39 Details Edit Delete
2155 Famous Iberian ham gets its American replica American Iberian ham is produced in Georgia from imported Spanish pigs that are feed with pecan nuts.
Spanish most known delicacy, Jamon, Iberian ham, is now replicated in the US by the Oriol family, originary from Spain. Their enterprise, Iberian Pastures, is located in Georgia and the black pigs (pata negra) are imported from Spain in order to respect the tradition imposed by the Iberian ham producers, reports ABC newspaper of Spain.

The difference consists of the nuts that are used in feeding the animals. In this case, the Oriol family is using the pecan nuts instead of acorn, as the Spaniards use to do. "We have tested the profile of fatty acids with peanuts and nuts and they are very similar to the type of fat of a pig fed with acorns", says Kurt Oriol, one the family members. The environmental conditions in Georgia are similar to those meet in the Spanish hills except one thing: the humidity. That's why the Jamon "made in America" is dried in a storage in Iowa. On the other hand, the pastures in Georgia are green almost all year round, while in Spain the situation is different. This is the reason why Iberian Pastures hope that its product will rival the famous Spanish ham not only in price but also in quality. "We think it will affect positively because the herb is a natural antioxidant and is good for healing", added Kurt Oriol.
At this time, prices for Jamon (Iberian ham) on international markets are between $1,000 and $1,500 and the US market was confronted for many years with counterfeit products and smuggled products.
    Industry 2018-11-07 15:03:53 2025-08-04 04:30:24 Details Edit Delete

2157 Vietnamese value of cephalopod exports to US increased by 31% The growth was considerable during the first five months of this year, reaching a value of $5.5 million.
The U.S held as one of the six leading importing markets of Vietnamese cephalopod in the first 7 months of 2018, informs Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers. According to the statistics of Vietnam Customs, Vietnam’s cephalopod exports to the U.S in Jun and July 2018 decreased, but thanks to the good growth in the first five months of the year, the total export value in the first 7 months year to this market still increased by 31.8%, reaching more than US$5.5 million.
Current cephalopod imports into the U.S were also on the downward trend. In the first 7 months of this year, imports of cephalopod products into the U.S decreased compared to the same period last year. However, due to the low yield of cephalopod pushed the import value higher than that of the same period. Specifically, the total volume of cephalopod in the U.S in the first seven months reached nearly 27 thousand MT, worth by US$183 million, down 14% in volume but up 2.6% in value.

In particular, squid products accounted for the highest proportion. Of that, frozen/smoked/salted squid accounted for more than 56% of total import volume; followed by processed squid and frozen/smoked/salted octopus.
The U.S boosted its imports of cephalopod from more than 30 countries around the world. In particular, Vietnam was currently one of the 10 largest suppliers to this market, with the share of 2%. Recently, while exports of some large countries such as China, India and Thailand to the US decreased, Vietnam's exports to the market increased by 49.5% in volume and 34% in value. Also, New Zealand's exports in this market increased by 25.9% in volume and 50.5% in value.
    Industry 2018-11-07 16:39:37 2025-08-05 16:06:44 Details Edit Delete

2161 US to remain South Korea's main pork supplier South Korea has increased its fresh/frozen pork imports by 15%, to 430,700 tonnes in the year to September.
Amey Brassington, analyst at the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB), said the initial expectation was that South Korean imports would decrease this year due to increased domestic production.

The US was South Korea's main supplier of pork in the mentioned period, with shipments reaching 149,000 tonnes valued at $408 million. These imports accounted for 35% of South Korea's total pork imports by volume and 31% by value.

EU's pork exports to South Korea increased by 7% in September, accounting for half of the Asian country's total pork import volumes, at 214,400 tonnes.

Brassington added that South Korea could face challenges next year in the context of growing pork imports while the country's pork industry is also increasing its output. The South Korean swine herd is expected to continue to expand next year to support higher pork consumption.

Brassington said that the demand is being driven by processed meat producers’ increasing use of domestic pork and growing consumer demand due to concerns over the safety of imported pork.

Also, the South Korean pork sector may be encouraged to expand production by the low feed prices which are expected to continue. This should reduce the demand for pork from outside the country.

The AHDB analyst also added that the US is expected to remain South Korea's main supplier of pork next year and will limit the growth opportunities for EU exporters because the US has more favourable access condition to this market due to the KORUS agreement.
    Industry 2018-11-08 12:11:38 2025-08-06 06:14:04 Details Edit Delete
2162 Demand for Australian goats declined in the last 3 years
Australia is exporting fewer goats due to a decline in demand for live animals, informs Weekly Times Now magazine, who is quoting data from the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources’ annual report.
The country’s live goat trade is diminishing due to the fact that it was just a niche market supplying Malaysia. “Domestic goat prices have grown significantly in the past couple of years, which has meant Australian live goats are far less competitive in Malaysia when compared to other sources. Hence importers have reduced their orders and, in some cases, opted to import more lambs via airfreight instead of goats", mentioned a spokesman from the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council.
Meat and Livestock Australia’s goat industry project manager, Julie Petty, said the decline coincided with a reduction in numbers, with the NSW goat population lower this year after a drop last year. NSW supplies most of the goats for this market. “Hopefully the population will be bumped up by more producers in Queensland getting into goats,” Ms Petty said.
    Industry 2018-11-08 12:30:20 2025-08-05 18:46:40 Details Edit Delete
2163 33% of the Canadians are thinking of reducing their meat consumption "That's not to say Canadians are not consuming meat. It all relates back to portion control and how you're eating it", replies the Canadian Cattlemen's Association.
A recent study from Dalhousie University shows just under a third of Canadians are thinking of reducing their meat consumption over the next six months but that is nothing new to the meat industry in the country, reports Strathmore Now magazine.
The study also estimates that over 6.4 million Canadians have dietary preferences which reduce, or eliminates, meat consumption even the locals are not quite ready to consume lab-grown meat and insects as alternatives.
The results of the survey is not a surprise for the beef industry as the Canadian Cattlemen's Association's Stakeholder Engagement Advisor, Stina Nagel, admits.
"It's a trend that we've seen growing over some time, and that's not to say Canadians are not consuming meat, they still certainly are, and there's a lot of misinformation out there, so it's something we saw coming. We see a role for a balanced variety of foods in our diets, and it's something we want to make sure the public has all the facts before they make these kinds of decisions. Thinking of reducing meat consumption could mean something different to each respondent, as over half of them said they were still big fans of meat. More current studies are showing that saturated fat might not be such a bad thing. It all relates back to portion control and how you're eating it. There's a big difference between eating a beef stir fry with a lot of vegetables and a giant burger with fries", declared Nagel.
In her opinion, Canada has the most sustainable beef production practices in the world in terms of the environmental impact of beef.
    Industry 2018-11-08 14:21:03 2025-08-06 03:47:19 Details Edit Delete

2170 Saudi chicken meat imports expected to decline by 19% Saudi Arabia's total chicken meat imports are expected to decline by about 19% in 2018, to 575,000 metric tons, compared with last year, according to a report published by USDA's Foreign Agricultural Service.
The report explains that the main cause for this decline in Saudi Arabia's total chicken meat imports is the Saudi Food and Drug Authority’s (SFDA) ban on electrical stunning in poultry slaughtering.

The new requirement was imposed on June 2018 and has significantly lowered the chicken meat exports to Saudi Arabia by Brazil, the Kingdom's main poultry meat supplier. The requirement has also eliminated U.S. poultry from the Saudi market. For 2019, FAS forecast that total Saudi chicken meat imports will reach 675,000 metric tons.

Meanwhile, Saudi Arabia's chicken meat exports are expected to reach 10,000 metric tons. FAS says "the main reason for the sharp drop in Saudi chicken meat exports is the import ban placed on Saudi chicken meat imports by the GCC countries because of the discovery of highly pathogenic avian influenza in major chicken meat producing provinces beginning at the end of December 2017".

The Kingom's domestic chicken meat production is expected to be lower in 2018 than in 2017, reaching 650,000 metric tons, down from 790,000 metric tons, according to data from the leading domestic chicken meat producers. 2171 First vaccine against ASF to be delivered in a year and a half The announcement was made by a Spanish researcher who is working closely with CISA-INIA and the Complutense University of Madrid.
There is hope for the swine industry as a vaccine against African swine fever virus is on its way. Jose Manuel Sanchez Vizcaino, a Spanish researcher, announced that the disease could be cured and controlled in at least two years, informs CdeComunicacion website. "We had been behind it for many years. I have had many failures along the way. Last year we started a very positive investigation. We work together with CISA-INIA and the Complutense University of Madrid. We found a virus that had the mutations that we would have liked to be able to do and that every time we tried it, it did not come out. Nature has made them and we have been lucky enough to find them after looking at many viruses over many years. From there, we started the trials both in domestic and in the wild, "he said.
A multinational company is already preparing to invest in the solution developed by the Spanish researchers and the delivery of the vaccine to international markets could be done in one year and a half or two, according to Sanchez.
"right now we have focused more on wild boar because it is what is causing more problems in the EU. We have a very high protection index and we are very happy with the preliminary results we have. We only have two experiences, one to see what would happen if the animal takes several doses of vaccine. We believe that nothing would happen to her because, as we are going to put her as an oral vaccine in the field, we do not know how much she can take, so we want her to take more than what would be necessary, but nothing will happen to her. And the second study will be about the stability of the vaccine. See that no matter how much it passes from animals to animals, it remains stable. We are very happy because it looks very good. At present we have in the EU is that we have nine affected countries already with affected wildlife, that is, wildlife is around everything and then every so often there is a focus, a contact between wild and domestic. Having contaminated wild animals is a permanent risk because you can not control when there is going to be a contact. The risk can be minimized with a massive vaccination of this wild species. In this way, we would lower the virus rate and therefore we could control the disease without any problem. It would be an extraordinary tool. It has been very difficult to get it because it is a very complicated virus. I think it will never need to vaccinate in domestic but in China, Russia, Ukraine would be great to help them with a vaccination in domestic", explained the scientist.
    Industry 2018-11-10 09:05:10 2025-08-06 04:03:57 Details Edit Delete
2172 Scottish beef prices to rebound this time of year A Quality Meat Scotland (QMS) analysis shows that the recent decrease in prices is going to be followed by a rise due to the higher demand expected before Christmas.
Stuart Ashworth, QMS Director of Economic Services believes that, despite recent falls in cattle and beef prices in Scotland, current prices will "once again moved ahead of year-earlier levels to start November 2p/kg dwt higher than last year".
Prices are expected to rise as demand for beef increases in the run-up to winter holidays as Christmas buying will be underway shortly and premium beef, often with a 21 or 28-day maturation period, will need to be purchased over the next couple of weeks to meet consumer demand. "The availability of prime stock in the run-up to Christmas may prove to be better than last year as some of these slower finishing cattle come onto the market. Demand for beef will be expected to grow in the run-up to Christmas, particularly for the more expensive roasting joints.

Data on retail sales from Kantar Worldpanel typically show that beef sales over the Christmas and new year period can be 2-3% higher than in the month previous while demand for roasting joints can double".
As a consequence, it is not unusual to see prime cattle prices begin to firm in mid-November before dipping away again from mid-December. A typical rise over this period during the past five years is around 2-3p/kg dwt. Last year the price climb was striking, lifting 7p/kg dwt over November as cattle numbers tightened.

In contrast to prime cattle, the weekly slaughterings of cull cows over July, August and September have been running higher than year-earlier levels said Mr Ashworth, although they have been producing lighter weight carcases possibly of poorer conformation.

"Price-reporting abattoirs indicate that the weekly kill of cull cows has continued to run ahead of year-earlier levels through October.

As numbers of cull cows increased, prices started to slide particularly through July and August. This has led to a sharp decrease in prices with the current price being around 18 p/kg dwt below last year", added Mr Ashworth.

Imports of frozen beef, more likely to be competing with cow beef for manufacturers interests have also been running higher than last year through the autumn, according to QMS Director of Economic Services. In contrast imports of fresh and chilled beef have been very similar to last year’s levels.
    Industry 2018-11-10 12:07:04 2025-08-06 05:04:19 Details Edit Delete
