1693	US food distribution sector reshaped through major acquisitions	Several deals were perfected in the last weeks by US Foods in a move that allows the company to expand further into the market.	<p>Several major deals were completed at the end of July, as US Foods continued its expansion into the food distribution market in the US.<br />The company announced since mid-July about its intention to acquire Thompson Company, Braunger Foods and Variety Foods, which are all owned and operated by TOBA in a move that allows setting a bigger footprint in the Midwest.<br />"This acquisition allows us to expand further into the Midwest and positions us even closer to our customers. We look forward to building on the expertise of the strong employee base at The Thompson Company, Braunger Foods and Variety Foods and welcoming them to US Foods", explained Russell Scott, Midwest president for US Foods, according to <a href="https://www.seafoodsource.com/news/foodservice-retail/us-foods-makes-play-further-into-the-midwest-with-new-acquisition">Seafood Source</a> magazine.<br />At the end of the month, US Foods announced that the number of acquisition is going to be 5, adding Food Services of America and Systems Services of America on its shopping list worth $1,8 billion.<br />Also, Providence, Rhode Island-based United Natural Foods said it was buying Supervalu in Minneapolis, Minnesota, a food distributor and operator of more than 3,000 grocery stores.<br />The newly-formed company is expected to grow the reach of sustainable and responsibly-sourced seafood products, in addition to other natural foods. At the same time, UNFI said that it would divest Supervalu’s retail stores over time.<br />"Combining our leading position in natural and organic foods with Supervalu's presence in fast-turning products makes us the partner of choice for a broader range of customers. 1696	US keeps a $450 million leverage on New Delhi	Poultry ban applied in the past is still making waves at WTO even if India recently re-opened its market for US producers.	<p>The US is still hanging on to the case filed against India at World Trade Organisation against poultry ban applied in the past even if authorities in New Delhi have decided to re-open the market for American poultry products starting this spring.<br />New Delhi changed its import rules as Washington asked early this year and imports from the country started in April, informs <a href="https://www.thehindubusinessline.com/news/world/poultry-imports-us-not-willing-to-withdraw-450-million-retaliation-case-against-india/article24566244.ece">The Hindu Business Line</a> magazine. Nevertheless, US keeps the WTO file open and even requested a postpone of three months in the final decision that was supposed to be taken on 20 of July.<br />Only small volumes of poultry were shipped to India until now, but this is a question that is ruled by the demand existing on the market and not by the import rules dictated by the Indian Government.<br />"The retaliation panel, which was to give its verdict on the dispute on July 20, has been asked by the US to hold its decision for another three months. 1697		The aid intends to preserve animal genetic diversity on 20,700 cattle from the breeds of Alistana-Sanabresa, the Sayaguesa and the Serrana Negra.	<p>The Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock of the Spanish Region of Castilla y Leon released an order of payment for the financial support dedicated for local breeders of autochthonous cattle races, reports <a href="https://www.vacunodeelite.es/castilla-y-leon-destina-120-000-euros-al-mantenimiento-de-razas-autoctonas/">Vacuno de Elite</a> portal.</p> <p>The call for 2018, which may be requested for twenty days, has a budget of 120,000 euros. The money will be directed to farmers who are assuring the maintenance of the genealogical book, the management of the breeds and the development of programs of genetic improvement.</p> <p>Seven local association are part of this program with 500 farms and 20,700 animals enlisted for the subsidy. The aids are intended to preserve animal genetic diversity and give greater impetus to the maintenance and conservation of the high genetic heritage that the autochthonous breeds represent. 1698	Veterinary audit mission from Singapore arrives in Ukraine	The poultry industry is targeted by the delegates of Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of the Republic of Singapore.	<p>Singapore has deployed an audit mission in Ukraine to check the system of state control over poultry products, informs UNIAN information agency.<br />According to Ukrainian authorities, Singaporean mission is to visit Ukraine's State Research Institute for Laboratory Diagnostics and Veterinary and Sanitary Examination and several poultry production facilities interested in exports to Singapore.</p> <p>"Delegates from the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of the Republic of Singapore, who are auditing the system of state control over poultry products, in particular, poultry meat and products made of it, namely eggs and egg products, started to work in Ukraine on July 30, 2018", mentioned the State Veterinary and Phytosanitary Service of Ukraine.<br />In 2017, Ukraine's poultry exports reached a volume of 271,320 tonnes worth $389.64 million. This year, the country has managed to open the Chinese market by signing a memorandum on cooperation and promotion of mutual trade in poultry meat.</p> <p>Singaporean audit mission is going to stay in the country until August 4 to verify all the aspects related to the safety of poultry products. 1699	US market to witness competition between pork, beef and poultry	Retaliatory tariffs from China and Mexico and an increased production could further drop the prices for all animal protein products.	<p>A drop in pork exports coupled with a drop in prices for lean hogs, created by the increased production, could create a vicious circle for the whole US meat industry.<br />Between the last week of June and now, lean hog carcass prices dropped from $84.05 cwt to $67.39 cwt, while average farrow-to-finish profits fell from $47 per hog to $14. In other words, the US pork industry suffered a horrific July and that is likely to affect beef, according to Sterling Marketing analysts, quoted by Drovers magazine.<br />The US pig inventory is on expansion phase and so are the figures related to cattle and poultry. Cheap pork abundantly reversed in the domestic market could easily impact prices of beef and poultry products, according to Sterling Marketing analysis.<br />Sterling Marketing president John Nalivka projects US beef production to increase 3.9% in 2018, and pork production up 4.1%. Additionally, US poultry production is expected to rise 3% this year. Increasing red meat and poultry production means per capita consumption in the US is projected at 222 pounds, the largest since 2007. As pork exports took a direct hit from the current trade war, more pork was available for the domestic market, creating more competition for consumer spending. That comes at a time when both beef and poultry production is increasing. 1700	Schneider teams up with Microsoft to develop a complete traceability system	Insurance claims for a product recall reach an average of $9.5 million, with the Food&Beverage industry being the second most impacted.	<p>New traceability application could solve some of the biggest issues that the F&B industry is now facing. An Allianz Global Corporate & Specialty report published in late 2017 estimates that insurance claims for a product recall reach an average of $9.5 million, with the Food & Beverage industry being the second most impacted, just after the car industry. <br />Food & Beverage product traceability can be complicated to set up, given the number of stakeholders involved across the supply chain (producers, suppliers, manufacturers, distributors, transporters…) <br />With this in mind, Schneider Electric is developing a new “End to End Traceability” tool to monitor products across the entire supply chain, both upstream and downstream of manufacturing plants. To do so, Schneider Electric is combining its knowledge of the Food & Beverage segment with the expertise of Microsoft, its partner, in blockchain technologies, informs a press release of the company. <br />Using its expertise with 21 with 21 of the Global Top 25 major Food & Beverage companies among its customers, Schneider Electric has worked with a major fresh produce retail group, a distributor and a transporter to develop a prototype for the downstream part of “End to End Traceability.” Benjamin Jude, Schneider Electric declared, “With this prototype, these companies can build an electronic passport for each product to fully automate the contracts between them. For example, leveraging IoT, they can maintain an unbroken cold chain.” In addition to ensuring full product traceability, “End to End Traceability” will also offer time savings by warning the distributor in real time of any delays in delivery or production. <br />“End to End Traceability” incorporates cutting-edge Schneider Electric technologies, including shock/humidity Telemecanique Sensors and a “click-to-cloud” system for reporting secure information from connected objects and sensors. <br />Thomas Conté, cloud engineer and blockchain evangelist at Microsoft, noted: “Blockchain is a digital technology that allows all members of an ecosystem to automatically share a common and unique truth on all their interactions. That truth is fully transparent to all of them, and all of them contribute to generating and storing that truth. It generates trust between those members.” Microsoft partnered with Schneider Electric to select the most suitable blockchain technology and to build very quickly the PoC using Azure Blockchain as a service. Thomas Conté continued: “The smart contracts leverage the truth shared by all stakeholders to automatically execute tasks like payments or products recalls, and improve collaboration between all of them”. They will automatically execute the service terms and conditions agreed upon by the different stakeholders (delivery times, temperature/humidity/shock levels, etc.). Each telemetric reading is archived securely in the blockchain and shared between all members to ensure traceability. 1701	Eurodon's turkey meat production doubled in H1 2018	Russian meat company Eurodon produced nearly 62.7 thousand tonnes of turkey meat and 14 thousand tonnes of duck meat in the first half of the year.	<p>Compared to the similar period from 2016, when the company produced 30,552 thousand tons of turkey meat, in 2018 its output almost doubled.</p> <p>In the first six months of 2018, the company produced a total of 76.7 thousand tonnes of meat.</p> <p>The company's past investments in its facilities have paid off. Eurodon said in a statement that its facilities built and launched in 2015 allowed it to increase its production capacity to annual volumes of 150,000 tons of turkey meat and about 30,000 tons of duck meat at the first stage and 80,000 tons at the second stage of the project development.</p> <p>Eurodon is one of the largest producers of turkey and duck meat in Russia. In 2017 the company, according to its own data, produced about 63,000 tons of turkey and 28,000 tons of ducks in live weight. 1702	Miratorg invested over $85.5 million in one of its meat production facilities	Russia's largest beef producer Miratorg has invested over 5.4 billion rubles ($85.5 million) to expand its production of high-quality beef in the Smolensk region since early 2015.	<p>The company's press center said Miratorg has build from scratch a vertically integrated facility that produces high-quality beef with a cattle stock of Aberdeen-Angus breeds exceeding 600 thousand head.</p> <p>Miratorg plans to increase its cattle herd up to 1 million head by 2021 and continues to build new livestock farms in Bryansk, Orel, Kaluga, Smolensk, Tula, and Kaliningrad.</p> <p>"The company is not only increasing the number of its livestock and building new farms and developing large-scale facilities for the production of high-quality beef, but it is also gradually increasing the area of cultivated land, buying and renting abandoned farmland. An essential part of investments is accounted for by livestock, purchase, and cultivation of land, purchase of machinery," the press service of Miratorg Agribusiness Holding commented.</p> <p>The company considers the Smolensk region to be very important for cattle breeding. The total land owned by Miratorg in Smolensk exceeds now 85.7 thousand hectares of land.</p> <p>The company is also actively developing its facilities for production of cereals, primarily corn, the main component for intensive animal fattening. 1704	Increase in value reported for Norway's cod exports in H1 2018	Norwegian fresh and frozen cod exports reached a volume of 50,800 tonnes in the first six months of this year, while their value amounted to NOK 1.8 billion, according to the Norwegian Seafood Council.	<p>In the first half of the year, Norway's cod exports reported a drop in volume of 5% and an increase in value of NOK 45 million or 2% compared with the corresponding period from 2017.</p> <p>Fresh cod exports, including fillets, reported a year on year drop in volume of 19% to 3,200, while the export value decreased by 12% to NOK 118 million, compared with June last year.</p> <p>"Measured in Norwegian kroner we have never had a stronger half-year for fresh cod. With reduced cod quotas this year, it is the price of fresh whole cod that has driven the value increase in the category," says Analyst Ingrid Kristine Pettersen at the Norwegian Seafood Council.</p> <p>On the other hand, frozen cod exports reached 39,000 tonnes which were worth NOK 1.4 billion in the first half of 2018. There was no change in volume in the first six months of this year compared to the similar period from 2017, but in value an increase was reported of 11%.</p> <p>June frozen cod shipments reached 6,200 tonnes, with a value of NOK 249 million. 1705	New ASF outbreaks reported in Poland	The Chief Veterinary Officer of Poland has reported another five outbreaks of African Swine Fever (ASF) in domestic pig herds, with a number of 2,983 pigs affected.	<p>The greatest damage was reported at pig producers from two Polish regions, according to Kvedomosti.ru.</p> <p>In the Lubelskie Voivodeship, outbreaks were reported in two farms, totaling 1,837 animals. In the Warmian-Mazury, three farms were affected, with a total of 1,146 pigs.</p> <p>The number of outbreaks, thus, reached 180, of which 76 were registered in the current year.</p> <p>Outbreaks of the virus were also observed in the herds of wild pigs last week. In total, there were 40 of them. 1706	Big progress in reducing the antibiotics use reported in the UK	A review published by the National Pig Association (NPA) indicates significant progress in the field.	<p>Since May 2016, when NPA published the Pig Industry Antibiotic Stewardship Programme outlining commitments to reduce, replace and refine antibiotic use in UK pig production, the whole industry, including producers, representative bodies, vets, feed and pharmaceutical companies, increased its efforts to address the antibiotic challenge, show the latest <a href="https://www.npa-uk.org.uk/hres/NPA%20Pig%20Industry%20Stewardship%20Programme%20July%202018">report</a>.</p> <p>According to data presented in NPA's report, in 2016, the volume of antibiotics administered to pigs in the UK dropped by 34% from 278 mg/PCU to 183 mg/PCU. This was followed by a further 28% reduction in 2017, to 131 mg/PCU. Overall, the UK pig industry has more than halved its antibiotic use within the last two years. Also, critically important antibiotics represented just 0.08% of total antibiotic use in pigs in 2017.<br />The quality of water and feed are extremely important in keeping the herd safe, said the report. Training and some other programs in hygiene and biosecurity have been delivered to farmers across Great Britain by authorities. "Farmers and vets are working together to improve biosecurity and disease control on farms to raise the overall health status of the national pig herd. 1707	South Korean pork imports up 15% in H1	South Korean pork imports were up 15% year-on-year for the first half of 2018, at 294,400 tonnes.	<p>Bethan Wilkins, analyst at AHDB, says the unexpected import growth has perhaps been supported by inconsistent growth in domestic production.</p> <p>USDA forecasts had anticipated a 3% growth in South Korean pork production in 2018, and indeed for the year to June, slaughterings have been 4% higher year-on-year.</p> <p>However, after a strong performance in January, slaughterings since have actually been quite variable, and average only 2% above year earlier levels for February-June.</p> <p>The US remained the dominant supplier of pork to South Korea, with volumes increasing by a third on year earlier levels to reach 107,600 tonnes. Germany and Spain also remained the second and third largest suppliers, shipping 56,200 tonnes and 36,700 tonnes respectively. The new lairage system will enhance lighting, air quality and temperature control, allowing chickens to rest comfortably and significantly reducing stress. The CAS technology selected is a very humane system that will ensure birds are fully insensible prior to processing. 1709	Germany turns out to be a global hub for vegan startups	The country has the highest percentage of global vegan food, drink development, and launches.	<p>A new report released by Mintel is showing that Germany is turning into a perfect hub for new businesses in the vegan sector.<br />The country has the highest global rate of new vegan products launched in the last 12 months, with 15% of the global launches developed in Germany.<br />The total of vegetarian product launches has been relatively stable over the past few years, meanwhile, vegan launches have more than doubled in the past five years, growing by 175%. Around the world, 5% of all food and drink products launched were vegan, while 11% were vegetarian, reports <a href="https://vivaglammagazine.com/surprise-germany-is-1-in-vegan-product-launches-2/">Viva Glam</a> magazine.</p> <p>But Germany is an exceptional case given that vegan launches are double as frequent as vegetarian ones: 14% of all food and drink launches between July 2017 and June 2018 were vegan, while only 8% were vegetarian. So, the European nation has seen it grown exponentially between July 2013 to June 2018, tripling (240%) during that time period, according to Mintel report.<br />"In recent years, consumers around the world have increased their intake of plant-based foods and Germany is no exception. Our research shows that stricter plant-based diets like veganism are still niche, while a much higher percentage of consumers are embracing ‘flexitarianism’. The majority of consumers are not giving up meat; they are making room for more vegan products as part of ‘flexitarian’ dieting, opening opportunities for plant-based food and drink innovation. 1712	Meat producer recalls its sausages in Ireland over Salmonella contamination fears	Irish meat producer Newbridge Meats is recalling a batch of sausage products due to a possible risk of Salmonella contamination.	<p>The Food Safety Authority of Ireland said that the measure of recalling is precautionary. 1711	Hunland Romania to deliver all its pigs to Tara Mea Cooperative	Pork delivered to Romanian retailer Kaufland will be at a higher quality, claims both partners.	<p>Tara Mea (My Country) Cooperative, an initiative developed by Kaufland, has signed a partnership with Dutch-Hungarian pig breeder Hunland to receive all its pigs produced in its Romanian subsidiary.<br />"Hunland will provide the highest quality genetic material in its own farms cooperative and will manage the whole process of growth and fattening. We already know it’s one a trusted partner and we are happy to be a partner we can support at the same time, which we can rely on. Integrated production began to take shape in Romania and us we are heading in the right direction: to be less dependent on import", explained Florin Burculescu, president of Tara Mea Cooperative.<br />Both parts are expecting annual increases in revenues of several million euros in the near future. Founded in Hungary and the Netherlands, Hunland is one of the leading companies in the field of international animal import and export. Hunland owns its own export farms, where animals are kept and prepared for transport, with their own land and sea fleets, which ensure animal welfare and optimal logistics functionality. Hunland currently has a turnover of over EUR 350 million, mentions <a href="https://business-review.eu/news/hunland-will-deliver-all-production-to-tara-mea-cooperative-179046">Business-Review</a> magazine. 1713	Brazilian chicken meat exports reached 463.1 thousand tons in July	Brazil's exports of chicken meat have increased by 20.6% in July compared to the similar month from 2017, reaching 463.1 thousand tons, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA).	<p>ABPA said the figure reported in July is the largest monthly shipment flow ever recorded in the history of the sector.</p> <p>In terms of value, the chicken meat exports generated revenues of $711.6 million, a performance of 15.7% above that reached in July last year.</p> <p>"The record number of exports is due to the reestablishment of shipment levels in ports after the end of the roadblocks, as well as the normalization of data flow in the new MDIC information collection system. 1714	Chinese beef imports are rising sharply	USDA' FAS is taking a close look at a market recently lost by American exporters due to the trade war.	<p>Total beef consumption in China in 2018 is estimated at 8.5 million metric tons, second only to the US, according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. In China, per capita consumption of beef is estimated to stand at least 6 kilos, only 16% of projected 2018 US retail beef consumption, observes Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University, in an article published by Drovers magazine.<br />Nevertheless, the dimension of the Chinese market is huge and a low but rising beef consumption trend registered in the last few years has outstripped domestic production and led to a sharp increase in imports.<br />"By 2016, China exceeded Japan as the number two beef importing country behind the US Chinese beef imports in 2018 are projected to be just 13% smaller than US beef imports. At the current pace, China could be the largest beef importing country in the world in another year or two. Over 95% of Chinese beef imports are sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. US beef exports to China resumed in 2017 after a nearly 14-year absence and are developing very slowly. In the past 12 months, exports to China have amounted to 0.6% of total U.S. beef exports", commented Peel.<br />Hit by retaliatory measures consisting of 25% tariff on agricultural products, including beef, the future of US beef exports in this market looks grim for now.<br />"What is the future potential for US beef in China? Beyond the additional obstacles due to the current trade war, building markets for US beef in China will face several challenges. Price is one of those challenges. Beef is expensive in China relative to other meats, even more so than in the U.S. Although growing beef demand in China is the result of a rapidly growing urban middle-class population, beef remains expensive for many consumers. Imported beef from the US is especially expensive", added Darrell Peel.<br />Time, patience and persistence along with a good strategy promoted by the US Meat Export Federation can build a future market for US beef in China, believes the professor.<br />Nevertheless, the sector was hit by the trade war 9 months after regaining access to the Chinese market and tariffs imposed by Beijing were perceived as a real shock by the industry. "China is a promising market for US beef, and, since the June 2017 reopening, the US industry has made an exceptional effort to provide customers with high-quality beef at an affordable price. This is not an easy task, due to our 13-year absence from the market and China’s beef import requirements.</p> <p>Interest in US beef has steadily gained momentum in China and our customer base has grown. But if an additional import tariff is imposed on US beef, these constructive business relationships, and opportunities for further growth, will be put at risk.</p> <p>In the second half of 2017, following the market reopening, US beef exports to China totalled 3,020 metric tons valued at $31 million.
