1713 Brazilian chicken meat exports reached 463.1 thousand tons in July Brazil's exports of chicken meat have increased by 20.6% in July compared to the similar month from 2017, reaching 463.1 thousand tons, according to the Brazilian Animal Protein Association (ABPA).
ABPA said the figure reported in July is the largest monthly shipment flow ever recorded in the history of the sector.

In terms of value, the chicken meat exports generated revenues of $711.6 million, a performance of 15.7% above that reached in July last year.

"The record number of exports is due to the reestablishment of shipment levels in ports after the end of the roadblocks, as well as the normalization of data flow in the new MDIC information collection system. At the same time, it shows a rapid response of the sector to the support of the Government, after the impacts of the truck drivers' strike, " Francisco Turra, president of ABPA, explained.
    Industry 2018-08-03 15:25:58 2025-08-01 21:18:27 Details Edit Delete
1716 Brazil's pork exports up by 17% in July Brazilian pork exports reached 57 thousand tons in July this year, increasing by 17.1% compared to the same period from 2017.
The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) said that this with this increase, the sector's revenue totaled $105.8 million. Still, in value, this was 13.8% lower compared with the figures reported in July 2017, when Brazilian pork exports totaled $122.7 million.

Exports between January and July totaled 293.7 thousand tons, 14.2% less than the 342.4 thousand tons shipped in the first seven months of last year. The revenue from sales reached $619.3 million, a result 28.2% lower than the $863 million obtained in 2017.

ABPA says that the situation regarding pork exports was the same as that of the chicken meat exports. Strong Chinese product purchases continue, reducing the impact of the Russian embargo on the Brazilian sector.

"Despite this, if we consider the average of the last two months combined, we see shipment volumes of 43.4 thousand tons, a level close to the average recorded in 2017, " Ricardo Santin, executive director of ABPA, explained.
    Industry 2018-08-04 11:39:51 2025-08-01 02:42:58 Details Edit Delete
1714 Chinese beef imports are rising sharply USDA' FAS is taking a close look at a market recently lost by American exporters due to the trade war.
Total beef consumption in China in 2018 is estimated at 8.5 million metric tons, second only to the US, according to the USDA Foreign Agricultural Service. In China, per capita consumption of beef is estimated to stand at least 6 kilos, only 16% of projected 2018 US retail beef consumption, observes Derrell Peel, Oklahoma State University, in an article published by Drovers magazine.
Nevertheless, the dimension of the Chinese market is huge and a low but rising beef consumption trend registered in the last few years has outstripped domestic production and led to a sharp increase in imports.
"By 2016, China exceeded Japan as the number two beef importing country behind the US Chinese beef imports in 2018 are projected to be just 13% smaller than US beef imports. At the current pace, China could be the largest beef importing country in the world in another year or two. Over 95% of Chinese beef imports are sourced from Brazil, Uruguay, Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. US beef exports to China resumed in 2017 after a nearly 14-year absence and are developing very slowly. In the past 12 months, exports to China have amounted to 0.6% of total U.S. beef exports", commented Peel.
Hit by retaliatory measures consisting of 25% tariff on agricultural products, including beef, the future of US beef exports in this market looks grim for now.
"What is the future potential for US beef in China? Beyond the additional obstacles due to the current trade war, building markets for US beef in China will face several challenges. Price is one of those challenges. Beef is expensive in China relative to other meats, even more so than in the U.S. Although growing beef demand in China is the result of a rapidly growing urban middle-class population, beef remains expensive for many consumers. Imported beef from the US is especially expensive", added Darrell Peel.
Time, patience and persistence along with a good strategy promoted by the US Meat Export Federation can build a future market for US beef in China, believes the professor.
Nevertheless, the sector was hit by the trade war 9 months after regaining access to the Chinese market and tariffs imposed by Beijing were perceived as a real shock by the industry. "China is a promising market for US beef, and, since the June 2017 reopening, the US industry has made an exceptional effort to provide customers with high-quality beef at an affordable price. This is not an easy task, due to our 13-year absence from the market and China’s beef import requirements.

Interest in US beef has steadily gained momentum in China and our customer base has grown. But if an additional import tariff is imposed on US beef, these constructive business relationships, and opportunities for further growth, will be put at risk.

In the second half of 2017, following the market reopening, US beef exports to China totalled 3,020 metric tons valued at $31 million. In January 2018, exports reached the highest monthly volume to date at 819 metric tons, valued at $7.5 million", announced in April USMEF president Dan Halstrom.

    Market 2018-08-03 16:29:00 2025-08-02 17:31:30 Details Edit Delete

1719 New Zealand reports increase of the beef cattle herd
In the last 12 months, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 1.9%, according to a survey released recently by Beef and Lamb New Zealand.
The herd in counting now 3.7 million cattle and the production is expected to grow as beef breeders in Marlborough-Canterbury are retaining most of the young cattle.
Meantime, the sheep flock has slowed its decline as farmers responded positively to strong prices and good grass growth leading into winter.
Beef and Lamb New Zealand Economic Service Chief Economist Andrew Burtt says the analysis reveals a younger ewe flock as farmers retain more hoggets for future production. The number of breeding ewes fell in all regions of New Zealand – and by 2.1% overall.

“The number of breeding ewes decreased 3.5% to 8.3 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 0.8% to 9.0 million. The decrease largely reflects farmers taking advantage of strong prices for mutton. There was also a preference – particularly in the older farmer demographic – towards less labour intensive livestock options to sheep.”

Consequently, the national hogget flock is up on last year. “Hogget numbers increased 2.5% to 9.1 million, largely from Marlborough-Canterbury where ewe hoggets were retained to replenish declining ewe flocks, and trade lamb purchases from Southland due to dry summer conditions. The lamb crop is expected to be down 3.8% to 22.8 million. This follows a record lambing percentage the previous season and a smaller breeding ewe flock but moderated by a lift in lambs from hoggets mated.
    Industry 2018-08-06 06:48:37 2025-08-02 21:29:20 Details Edit Delete

1727 Poland could be leading the turkey production in EU in just two years The growth dynamics in this segment has brought the country to the second position, right behind Germany.
Poland could take the leading position in EU's turkey production in less than two years, according to data revealed by Eurostat. By now, Poland overtook France in the production of turkey meat sitting right behind Germany, the only country that reports higher numbers on industrial slaughter.
"While maintaining the current growth dynamics, already in 2020, we can be the largest producer of turkey meat in Europe ahead of the Germans", said the National Chamber of Poultry and Feeding Producers, according to Portal Spozywczy.
Turkey production in Poland has grown constantly during the last two decades, in 2015-2016 the country making its way in top three turkey producers in EU. Nevertheless, in 2017 the production of turkeys in Poland decreased slightly as a result of avian influenza.
"The production of turkeys in Poland has been growing significantly for over a dozen years. However, the real boom lasts since 2014, when - with a break for bird flu - production levels grow by several percents annually! 1730 NFU warns UK Government about country's reduced self-sufficiency in food National Farmers Union (NFU) leaders urge the British authorities to put the nation's food security at the top of the political agenda.
Great Britain can survive on its own food only 7 months and one week, says NFU President Minette Batters. The country's self-sufficiency in food has dropped from 74% in 1987 to 60% last year, according to statistics issued by DEFRA, and that is a major concern in the light of Brexit.
"The statistics show a concerning long-term decline in the UK’s self-sufficiency in food and there is a lot of potential for this to be reversed. And while we recognise the need for importing food which can only be produced in different climates, if we maximise on the food that we can produce well in the UK then that will deliver a whole host of economic, social and environmental benefits to the country. Home-grown food production must have the unwavering support of Government if we are to achieve this post-Brexit", declared Minette Batters in a document addressed to the British Government.
Northern Irelan was the single UK nation that recognises the importance of food security in post-Brexit policy development, while future agricultural policy consultations in England, Scotland and Wales all failed to mention it, informs Farmers Guardian. The farming sector can be one of the most impacted in case of a hard-Brexit, added NFU president while asking the officials to negotiate a frictionless free trade deal with the EU and access to a reliable and competent workforce for farm businesses.

Ironically, the UK is a net exporter of meat but relies on imports of bacon and poultry meat. The same awkward situation is to be found in sectors such as dairy and egg, with Britain exporting more milk and cream products than it produces, and imports almost three times as much cheese as it exports and almost twice as many eggs than its own production.

    Industry 2018-08-07 12:54:20 2025-08-02 13:05:53 Details Edit Delete
1731 Embrapa partners with Marfrig to reduce methane emissions in cattle The Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) has entered a strategic alliance with Marfrig Global Foods to reduce the methane gas emitted by cattle.
Embrapa developed the Carbon Neutral Beef (CNBB) and Low Carbon Brazilian Beef (LCBB) seals to certify that beef produced using systems that neutralize or reduce the methane gas emitted by the animals.

Through this alliance, the two companies hope to strenghthen both the local beef market and the market for beef exports, especially to more demanding markets, by differentiating Brazilian beef in negotiations of non-tariff barriers related to sustainability issues.

“Through this partnership, Embrapa and Marfrig will help position Brazilian beef at a whole new level of value perception in the local and international markets, which are increasingly demanding sustainable production practices, from animal welfare to integrated systems that help to reduce greenhouse gases,” said Cleber Soares, director of innovation and technology at Embrapa.

Furthermore, Embrapa said in a statement that this partnership represents an important advance by encouraging an important link in the cattle production chain to foster development and promote the concept of a more sustainable product with consumers.

Cattle production accounts for 6.8% of Brazilian GDP. From 1990 to 2015, the country’s pasture area has decreased by 12%, while meat productivity has grown 229%.

Researcher Roberto Giolo de Almeida from Embrapa Beef Cattle explains that carbon neutral Brazilian beef (CNBB) is produced using integrated systems combined with planted trees, which are responsible for sequestering carbon and for potentially neutralizing the methane emissions from the grass-fed animals, while also providing thermal comfort for the cattle.

Low carbon Brazilian beef (LCBB) can be produced using integrated systems with pastures without the presence of trees, but with proper pasture management that fixes carbon in the soil, enabling the system to reduce or mitigate animal emissions.

Embrapa expects products under the program to reach the market in 2019.

Embrapa is a technology innovation company that focuses on generating knowledge and technology for Brazil’s agricultural industry.
    Industry 2018-08-07 13:48:07 2025-08-03 02:20:09 Details Edit Delete
