2177 | Spanish pork prices are back to 2015 levels |
Pork price in Spain will continue with a similar trend to 2015 fall prices, except that this year Spain there are lighter pigs going to the market. "We are currently with a market price of € 1,046 / kg live weight with an average weight of 111 kg", signals Mercedes Vega, Genesus General Director for Spain, Italy & Portugal.
"At this time the packers have stopped losing money and they have started to make decent profits, while the producers -if we take as a reference the cost of production from the first two quarters of 2018, they are losing between 1.05 or 1.1 € / kg", estimates Vega in the report.
"In addition to this situation, everybody agrees that this year there are lighter hogs compared with last year -110.98 kg compared to 113.57 kg live weight in 2017- but also there is more supply and also more killing capacity, so the packers will be assuming that by increasing their purchase volume. The uncertainty of the market with the future is still very confusing due to the ASF situation in the EU", she added.
Besides that, pork consumption in Spain is decreasing due to the repercussion of the deep financial crisis that began in 2008, the pressure exerted by groups of vegetarians, vegans and animal rights extremists, the evolution of the population structure in Spain with a growing increase on aged people, and finally a change in the average family structure in Spain with a growing presence of units of one or two people and the decrease of family lunches and dinners in those families that have younger children.
Spain's meat consumption estimates for this year are the following: pork (46 kg/year), beef (12 kg/year), avian meat (30 kg/year), sheep and goat (4 kg/year), rabbit (1.5 kg/year), other (2 kg/year).

| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-12 10:36:30 | 2025-08-02 23:03:46 | Details Edit Delete | |||

2183 | For the sixth straight year, Marfrig was certified in compliance with the commitment to preserve the Amazon Biome. |
The independent international consulting firm DNV-GL, which specializes in business and environmental risk analysis, has concluded a report attesting to the compliance of Marfrig Global Foods with the Public Commitment on Amazon Cattle Ranching. The document aims to assess the practices adopted to combat deforestation in the Amazon rainforest, violence against indigenous peoples and the use of slave labor within the Amazon Biome, which encompasses the Brazilian states of Amazonas, Pará, Amapá, Acre, Rondônia, Roraima and parts of the states of Maranhão, Tocantins and Mato Grosso.

DNV-GL’s audit assessed the animal purchases made from Jan 1. To Dec. 31, 2017. For the sixth straight year, Marfrig was certified in compliance with the commitment first undertaken in 2009. “Preserving the Amazon Biome is one of our priorities in environmental sustainability,” said Eduardo Miron, CEO of Marfrig Global Foods. “We were the first company in the industry to sign the agreement with Greenpeace and, even after the NGO discontinued the Public Commitment on Cattle Ranching, in 2017, Marfrig maintained its good sustainability practices and reinforced its actions to combat deforestation of the Amazon Biome.”
The independent audit was conducted in three phases. The first phase assessed the system responsible for cattle sourcing and the blacklisting of suppliers located in the Amazon Biome that fail to comply with the social and environmental criteria established by Marfrig. Tests were conducted to simulate animal purchases from suppliers that are blacklisted by Brazil’s Environment Institute (Ibama) or by the Ministry of Labor. The simulations confirmed that all Marfrig units follow the policy of not sourcing cattle from farms included in areas currently banned by the institute and the ministry.

In the second phase, the auditors verified the quality and efficacy of the geomonitoring system used by the company, with tests, geospatial analyses and the presentation of all data-gathering processes. In the third and final phase, DNV-GL verified the environmental and property compliance process throughout the supply chain. It showed that everyone is in good standing and consequently in compliance with the social and environmental criteria established by Marfrig for its animal sourcing supply chain.

“Since 2012, Marfrig is the only company to be certified 100% in compliance by all audits related to the Public Commitment on Amazon Cattle Ranching,” said Miron. The audit’s findings reflect our commitment to best environmental practices.”

(Photo source: Nasdaq)
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-13 06:32:48 | 2025-08-02 14:27:14 | Details Edit Delete | |||

2186 | Malaysian company launched Omega-3 pork | Dindings Farms created pig meat enriched with Omega 3 fatty acid by feeding the animals with flaxseed. |
Dindings Farms, Malaysia, recently presented the new product from its facilities, Omega 3 enriched pork. Feeding the animals with flaxseed has proved to be a solution for the meat to become healthier and tasteful.
The Omega-3 enriched pork is created through a shift in diet, using feed enhanced with flax seed that is supplied by French Valorex SAS. Animal nutrition company APSN Biotech Sdn Bhd and non-profit organization Bleu-Blanc-Coeur (BBC) performed the advisory role in the creation. Speaking at a launch recently, BBC’s international development manager Jeremie Renaud stressed that consumption of food rich in Omega-3 helps to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, lower the level of triglyceride in diabetes patients and improve skin barrier function, according to Asian-Agribiz magazine.
Flaxseed contains alpha-linolenic acid (ALA), a form of Omega-3 fatty acid that the human body cannot generate itself. The omega-3 ALA in flaxseed can be converted by enzymes in the body to the useful omega-3 eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). For now, the Omega-3 enriched pork is delivered to the domestic market in two important Malaysian cities, Selangor and Negeri Sembilan.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-13 11:08:27 | 2025-08-03 02:37:00 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2193 | NPB partners with USMEF and USDA on Pork 2040 study | The National Pork Board, the U.S. Meat Export Federation (USMEF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) will engage in a foresight-based marketing study called Pork 2040, which will investigate changing consumer attitudes and trends in developed and emerging U.S. pork export markets in 17 defined countries. |
“Previous international marketing studies centered only on quantitative statistics to define demand, production and market access,” said Bill Luckey, chair of the Checkoff’s International Marketing committee and a pork producer from Columbus, Nebraska. “This unique effort will be more comprehensive, investigating the relevant qualitative factors that shape consumer opinion and hence markets. The study will focus on forecasting the pork and pork-product demand landscape over the next several decades so help determine where best to invest our limited Checkoff resources.”

Besides analyzing linear consumer trends, the study will also follow trends in the development of new production and marketing technologies, as well as in growing environmental concerns and in emerging legal, trade and regulatory regimes around the globe.

“Comprehensive research is vital to our international marketing planning and forecasting in order to stay ahead of the curve,” Luckey said. “We must take proactive steps to market products in both current and emerging markets well into the future.”

NPB announced that the study will be initially focused on China. Another highlight is that the study will include a research platform which will enable the U.S. pork industry to design and implement a long-term strategy for U.S. pork consumption in China and to add context to one of the most critical export markets.

“By forecasting where pork and pork product demand is heading in China, the Pork Checkoff and its partners can return value to U.S. pig farmers through a defined and united focus on growing export demand,” said Craig Morris, vice president of international marketing for the Pork Checkoff.

The study will be funded at the beginning through the Emerging Markets Program. The aim is to increase US exports to China with the help of teams of experts which will assess consumer trends, attitudes and behaviors that influence China’s food system needs.

“Pork 2040 will help decision-makers in business, government and non-profit organizations understand and accommodate the myriad challenges facing our pork industry stakeholders,” Morris said. “Challenges routinely surface from ever-evolving factors that affect the global food system, and we need to be better informed about circumstances potentially within our control and influence.”

The organizations are currently seeking companies to perform services for this research project.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-14 11:45:43 | 2025-08-02 02:26:39 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2201 | FAO: "Indigenous food systems are the key to achieving a zero-hunger world" | The target assumed by UN's Food and Agriculture Organisation can find answers studying the sustainability of indigenous food systems. |
Answers to "Zero Hunger" policy assumed by UN's FAO can be found in indigenous food systems and indigenous traditional knowledge, claims FAO Director-General José Graziano da Silva.
"FAO considers indigenous and tribal peoples as fundamental actors in the fight against poverty, hunger and all other forms of malnutrition, as well as in the promotion of sustainable agriculture practices," Graziano da Silva said in a keynote speech wrapping up High-Level Expert Seminar on Indigenous Food Systems held to explore how to build on traditional knowledge to achieve Zero Hunger.
On November 9, seventy panelists coming from indigenous communities and organizations; universities; research centers and more than 180 attendees and 49 countries, exchanged their expertise and knowledge on indigenous food systems. By combining presentations on traditional knowledge and expertise from scientific knowledge, the seminar allowed to increase the understanding and contributions that indigenous food systems have been making to the world.
"In the path to achieve the Zero Hunger Goal we need more efficient food production methods. We need to cease environmentally unsound practices. We need to innovate on and open to all manner of food systems" highlighted Patrick Rata, New Zealand Ambassador.
Indigenous peoples number more than 370 million people speaking more than 4,000 languages in 90 countries and occupying around 22 percent of the earth's surface while acting as custodians of 80 percent of the planet's biodiversity. Yet while representing around 5 percent of the world's population, they make up 15 percent of the world's poor.

FAO recognizes indigenous peoples as allies in the fight against hunger and malnutrition and highlights their role in advancing the implementation of the Sustainable Development Agenda. The lack of respect of the ancestral and collective rights of indigenous peoples to their communal land, natural resources and territories combined with the lack of respect to the principle of Free, Prior and Informed Consent and reduced opportunities for political representation place indigenous peoples in a situation of vulnerability.

"We need to address this situation, and to give special attention to indigenous youth and women," Graziano da Silva said.
Co-organized by FAO, UNESCO, UNPFII, FILAC and DOCIP, the expert seminar was an opportunity to exchange knowledge, understandings, and concepts, which will be articulated in a future publication. The expert seminar and the publication are key contributions to the global debate on sustainability and climate resilience in the context of the 2030 Agenda and the United Nations Decade of Action on Nutrition.
"What it is important about this seminar is not only indigenous peoples themselves coming together, but that we are forging ahead strategies and partnerships with different organizations to ensure that our food systems are visible, recognized and respected," said Christiana Louwa Saiti from El Molo People in Kenya.

Indigenous food systems are dynamic and their very persistence highlights their value as a source of insights for broader global challenges, said Helena Semedo, FAO's Deputy Director-General.

She urged seminar participants to think of "how can we embrace key features of indigenous food systems that depend on both cultivated crops and wild plants, synergies with the natural environment and biodiversity, close adaptation to local conditions, a high level of diversification, a light carbon footprint, fewer ‘negative externalities' and reduced use of external inputs while being closely tied to socio-cultural and spiritual activities?"

Along with opening and closing ceremonies led by Abuela Amalia, a traditional healer of the Nahuatl People in Mexico, and Taita Morales, the seminar addressed topics ranging from how indigenous food systems can contribute to the Sustainable Development Goals and the Zero Hunger Challenge. Sessions were also dedicated to case studies related to communities in upland Vietnam, northern Finland, the Solomon Islands, and Cameroon's forests.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-15 11:52:51 | 2025-08-01 21:09:15 | Details Edit Delete | ||

In the opinion of the Office, the concentration will also not affect the access of small and medium market participants to large meat recipients.
Pursuant to the regulations - indicated in the statement - this transaction is subject to notification to the antimonopoly office if it involves entrepreneurs whose total turnover in the preceding year exceeded EUR 1 billion in the world or EUR 50 million in Poland.

"Decisions agreeing to the concentration expire if the transaction is not made within 2 years of their issuance" - reminds UOKiK.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-15 12:34:23 | 2025-08-03 06:50:50 | Details Edit Delete | ||

Hence importers have reduced their orders and, in some cases, opted to import more lambs via airfreight instead of goats", mentioned a spokesman from the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council.
Live exports have diminished from 88,897 in 2014-15 to just 16,578 in the last financial year, according to the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources’ annual report.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-15 13:00:49 | 2025-08-02 01:34:11 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2204 | Meat industry to witness strong growth in Brazil and North America | The rest of the world is confronted with biosecurity risks and challenging condition, show Rabobank analysis. |
Growth in global animal protein production is expected to slow as we move through 2019, given some obvious areas of uncertainty in trade, biosecurity, and the weather, show the most recent outlook from Rabobank.
Due to harsh weather conditions and high biosecurity risks, meat and poultry production will witness an increase only in some regions of the world, such as South and North America. Also, uncertainty created by African swine fever, in trade, and with feed prices all contribute to the slowdown in production.
Nevertheless, the economic outlook is positive for most of the world, and consumer confidence remains firm, mentioned the analysts. "To help ensure a successful year ahead, the animal protein supply chain needs to look through the uncertainties. Boosting competitiveness in trade will benefit from strong relationships and reasonable pricing, as well as enhanced biosecurity. Boosting competitiveness in domestic markets will benefit from innovative approaches to production and processing that boost value-adding", the document says.

North America will see strong growth in production, with increases across all species, led by pork. Exports will increase too, while small, total growth in beef exports will lead export growth, predicts the analysts.

Europe
Poultry production is growing, but pork and beef are stable. European exports will grow, and biosecurity will become even more important.

China
Biosecurity is the top issue for the Chinese animal protein sector, and pork production is down materially as a result. Imports are expected to rise.

Brazil
Production is growing across all species of the Brazilian animal protein complex. Local economic conditions influence local demand… and could go either way. Exports are expected to increase.

South-East Asia
Poultry leads to modest production growth in South-East Asia. Cost pressures are rising, challenging local production and imports.

Australia & New Zealand
Beef and sheepmeat production in Australia & New Zealand will decline. Limited supplies will maintain strong livestock prices, and seasonal conditions dictate growth possibilities.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-16 06:46:46 | 2025-08-01 21:05:24 | Details Edit Delete |
