1716	Brazil's pork exports up by 17% in July	Brazilian pork exports reached 57 thousand tons in July this year, increasing by 17.1% compared to the same period from 2017.	<p>The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) said that this with this increase, the sector's revenue totaled $105.8 million. Still, in value, this was 13.8% lower compared with the figures reported in July 2017, when Brazilian pork exports totaled $122.7 million.</p> <p>Exports between January and July totaled 293.7 thousand tons, 14.2% less than the 342.4 thousand tons shipped in the first seven months of last year. 1719	New Zealand reports increase of the beef cattle herd		<p>In the last 12 months, New Zealand’s beef cattle herd increased by 1.9%, according to a survey released recently by Beef and Lamb New Zealand.<br />The herd in counting now 3.7 million cattle and the production is expected to grow as beef breeders in Marlborough-Canterbury are retaining most of the young cattle.<br />Meantime, the sheep flock has slowed its decline as farmers responded positively to strong prices and good grass growth leading into winter.<br />Beef and Lamb New Zealand Economic Service Chief Economist Andrew Burtt says the analysis reveals a younger ewe flock as farmers retain more hoggets for future production. The number of breeding ewes fell in all regions of New Zealand – and by 2.1%  overall.</p> <p>“The number of breeding ewes decreased 3.5%  to 8.3 million in the North Island, while South Island numbers dropped 0.8%  to 9.0 million. The decrease largely reflects farmers taking advantage of strong prices for mutton. There was also a preference – particularly in the older farmer demographic – towards less labour intensive livestock options to sheep.”</p> <p>Consequently, the national hogget flock is up on last year. “Hogget numbers increased 2.5%  to 9.1 million, largely from Marlborough-Canterbury where ewe hoggets were retained to replenish declining ewe flocks, and trade lamb purchases from Southland due to dry summer conditions. The lamb crop is expected to be down 3.8%  to 22.8 million. 1720	Five tons of pork egg rolls recalled due to foreign matter contamination	The product was treated but not fully cooked and not shelf stable and consumers complained about plastic found in it.	<p>Van Oriental Foods, a Texas establishment, is recalling 5 tons of pork egg rolls due to possible foreign matter contamination.<br />The pork egg rolls were produced on May 30, 2018. The products have a shelf life of 12 months if frozen and 11 days if refrigerated, informs U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS), who is calling for a Class II recall with low health risk in this case.<br />The problem was discovered after the firm received two consumer complaints stating that a thin thread of plastic was found in the egg rolls products.</p> <p>There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Nevertheless, FSIS is concerned that some product may be in consumers’ refrigerators or freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. 1722	Dubai-based Sokotra Capital acquires Tunisian fish farm	Investment firm Sokotra Capital has led a consortium to buy a 100% stake in L'Aquaculture Tunisienne (AT), said to be one of the oldest companies in the aquaculture sector in North Africa and the Mediterranean basin.	<p>With this acquisition, SOKOTRA Capital is reiterating its investment strategy focused on the highly promising agriculture and aquaculture sectors through the building of a portfolio of investments in these sectors, both in Africa and in South East Asia.</p> <p>"We are extremely pleased with this acquisition. AT has a highly skilled team with extensive experience. Tunisia remains, and despite the recent challenges, a very attractive and friendly destination for foreign direct investments. 1721	Iran Veterinary Organization starts a vaccination campaign in poultry farms	Last year's outbreak of avian flu led to the culling of 27 million chickens and losses of half billion dollars.	<p>Iran Veterinary Organization is decided to fight back against the danger represented by the deadly avian flu that has taken its toll on the poultry industry in 2017.<br />10 million doses of vaccines, worth €650,000 have been imported from Mexico in order to tackle the threat that is still present in the region, reports local newspaper <a href="https://financialtribune.com/articles/domestic-economy/91039/iran-veterinary-organization-takes-on-avian-flu-by-importing-vaccine">Financial Tribune</a>.<br />"It was decided to undertake the vaccination of the highly acute avian flu in poultry farms across 12 provinces. Vaccination started in egg production units of Qazvin, Alborz, Tehran and Qom provinces. 1724	The US receives green light to export fishery products to Guatemala		<p>The US Department of Agriculture has announced that all federally inspected fishery product processing and distribution facilities including warehouses are eligible to export to Guatemala.</p> <p>Earlier this year, Guatemala had eliminated sanitary inspection for plants based in the US that exported fishery products but required an official export inspection certificate that would comply with the Ministry of Agriculture (MAGA) for the American companies to be able to sell their products in this market.</p> <p>USDA says that on June 21, 2018, MAGA agreed to accept a NOAA Export Inspection Certificate, and provided a 60-day implementation period for compliance.</p> <p>MAGA also agreed to accept shipments of fishery products from third countries exported through the United States when the product has a valid NOAA export inspection certificate.</p> <p>In addition, MAGA requires that all U.S. companies exporting fishery products to Guatemala be registered with FDA.</p>	1		Industry		2018-08-06 12:11:36	2025-07-31 16:06:30	Details Edit Delete

1727	Poland could be leading the turkey production in EU in just two years	The growth dynamics in this segment has brought the country to the second position, right behind Germany.	<p>Poland could take the leading position in EU's turkey production in less than two years, according to data revealed by Eurostat. By now, Poland overtook France in the production of turkey meat sitting right behind Germany, the only country that reports higher numbers on industrial slaughter.<br />"While maintaining the current growth dynamics, already in 2020, we can be the largest producer of turkey meat in Europe ahead of the Germans", said the National Chamber of Poultry and Feeding Producers, according to Portal Spozywczy.<br />Turkey production in Poland has grown constantly during the last two decades, in 2015-2016 the country making its way in top three turkey producers in EU. Nevertheless, in 2017 the production of turkeys in Poland decreased slightly as a result of avian influenza.<br />"The production of turkeys in Poland has been growing significantly for over a dozen years. However, the real boom lasts since 2014, when - with a break for bird flu - production levels grow by several percents annually! Although it is difficult to imagine today, if we assume that the growth rate will be as high as in recent years, we can be the largest turkey meat producer in Europe by overtaking Germany" - comments Mariusz Szymyslik, director of the National Chamber Poultry and Feed Manufacturers.<br />In the first four months of this year, Germany reported a production of 162,000 tonnes of turkey meat. Sealed Air will also be able to better position its fabricated foam innovations such as EcoPure, a sustainable solution made from plant-based resin.</p> <p>“With the acquisition of AFP, coupled with our 2017 acquisition of Fagerdala, Sealed Air will further expand its capability to provide fabricated designs directly to customers in markets such as electronics and transportation,” said Kenneth P. 1729	German poultry producers ask for higher purchase prices	Feeding costs have increased due to the drought present in Northern Europe and analysts are talking about a catastrophic situation.	<p>German poultry producers are requesting a higher purchase price from the retailers as the feeding prices have gone up. "The significant rise in animal feed prices in past weeks has brought German poultry farmers into great difficulty. Prices for wheat, a central component of chicken and turkey feed, is currently about 25% over last year’s level, with a rising trend.<br />We call on the food retail sector to increase their purchase price. And consumers should be willing to pay more for poultry meat", said German producer association ZDG in a statement. 1733	Sarawak bans poultry imports from Sabah	The Sarawak government has imposed restrictions on the import of poultry and poultry products from Sabah starting from August 1 on account of a bird flu outbreak in its northern neighboring state.	<p>The ban applies only for the Lawas district, which is along the border with Sabah, as reported by Malaymail.</p> <p>Authorities from Sabah have detected the avian influenza virus in a chicken farm in Tuaran. 1730	NFU warns UK Government about country's reduced self-sufficiency in food	National Farmers Union (NFU) leaders urge the British authorities to put the nation's food security at the top of the political agenda.	<p>Great Britain can survive on its own food only 7 months and one week, says NFU President Minette Batters. 1731	Embrapa partners with Marfrig to reduce methane emissions in cattle	The Brazilian Agricultural Research Company (Embrapa) has entered a strategic alliance with Marfrig Global Foods to reduce the methane gas emitted by cattle.	<p>Embrapa developed the Carbon Neutral Beef (CNBB) and Low Carbon Brazilian Beef (LCBB) seals to certify that beef produced using systems that neutralize or reduce the methane gas emitted by the animals.</p> <p>Through this alliance, the two companies hope to strenghthen both the local beef market and the market for beef exports, especially to more demanding markets, by differentiating Brazilian beef in negotiations of non-tariff barriers related to sustainability issues.</p> <p>“Through this partnership, Embrapa and Marfrig will help position Brazilian beef at a whole new level of value perception in the local and international markets, which are increasingly demanding sustainable production practices, from animal welfare to integrated systems that help to reduce greenhouse gases,” said Cleber Soares, director of innovation and technology at Embrapa.</p> <p>Furthermore, Embrapa said in a statement that this partnership represents an important advance by encouraging an important link in the cattle production chain to foster development and promote the concept of a more sustainable product with consumers.</p> <p>Cattle production accounts for 6.8% of Brazilian GDP. 1732	Al-Watania becomes Cobb Europe's distributor for Saudi Arabia	Cobb-Vantress, a US-based poultry research company, has signed a distribution agreement through its subsidiary, Cobb Europe, with leading Middle East producer, Al-Watania Poultry Company, for the territories of Saudi Arabia and a number of surrounding Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) member countries.	<p>Al-Watania has collaborated with Cobb Europe for more than two decades in Saudi Arabia. In addition, since it acquired Cobb Egypt more than 10 years ago, Al-Watania Poultry (Egypt) has been the Cobb distributor and a market leader in Egypt.</p> <p>Al-Watania Poultry currently processes more than 860,000 broilers/day and plans to expand its daily production to one-million broilers by 2020. Through its expansion strategy, the company is supporting the Kingdom’s initiative to reduce dependency on chicken meat imports and increase by 20 percent local chicken meat production by 2020.</p> <p>Al-Watania has plans to double the output of parent stock chicks to four million birds a year by 2020, through expanding its hatchery and grandparent operations in Al Jouf.</p> <p>It is also investing in a fleet of transporters fitted with the latest onboard environment controls with each truck capable of holding up to 60,000 chicks for delivering to parent stock customers as far as 2,000 kilometers away.</p> <p>“The Cobb500™ will play a key role in our expansion program,” said Mohammad Hamed Al-Shayea, vice president of production for Al-Watania Poultry. “The Saudi government is seeking to increase food security and is supporting domestic poultry production to reduce imports which currently represent 55% to 60% of the market.”</p> <p>Mark Sams, general manager, Cobb Europe, said: “The Middle East is a crucial region for Cobb, with enormous potential for growth as a key emerging market. 1734	CPF to reduce plastic in its packaging	Charoen Pokphand Foods PCL (CPF) considers design of packaging as one of the factor to help reduce environmental impacts.	<p>The company has changed from petroleum-based plastic “Polyethylene Terephthalate” (PET) to plant-based and biodegradable packing “Polylactic Acid” (PLA) in food products particularly fresh chicken and pork, the first time in Thailand. This transformation reduced greenhouse gas emission 83% and equivalent to the switching off 12 million electric lights in one hour. </p> <p>During 2007-2017, The company’s paper and plastic usage was reduced by more than 2,315 tons or equivalent to greenhouse gas reduction of 131,361 tons CO2.</p> <p> </p> <p>In addition, the company’s fast food business ‘Chester’ shop has also serviced customer in the shop with melamine plate, stainless steel spoon and glass (no plastic glass) since started operation for more than 30 years. It is the only one fast food to provide such service. It also created its own washing system with hygiene practices under food safety standards. This is to encourage consumer to realize more on environment save.
