2202 | Pini Polonia to be owned by Smithfield Foods | That it will be the 11th Polish subsidiary for Smithfield Foods and the Office of Competition and Consumer Protection have nothing to argue about this process of consolidation. |
Besides Animex group and other nine meat production and processing plants, Smithfield Foods will soon take control of Pini Polonia, according to an information delivered Poland's Office of Competition and Consumer Protection (UOKiK).
Pini Polonia is part of the Pini Group capital group, which includes companies in Poland, Italy, and Hungary. It has a slaughterhouse in Kutno, it also supplies meat to stores and processing plants, according to Portal Spozywczy magazine.
"The transaction regarding the takeover of control over Pini Polonia by Smithfield Foods was originally notified to the European Commission, but the EC referred the case to UOKiK because it considered that the concentration affects only the Polish market and that the office has adequate knowledge and experience to investigate this matter", communicated UOKiK after conducting a market research - including examination of shares of concentration participants and other entrepreneurs operating on this market. In the opinion of the Office, the concentration will also not affect the access of small and medium market participants to large meat recipients.
Pursuant to the regulations - indicated in the statement - this transaction is subject to notification to the antimonopoly office if it involves entrepreneurs whose total turnover in the preceding year exceeded EUR 1 billion in the world or EUR 50 million in Poland.

"Decisions agreeing to the concentration expire if the transaction is not made within 2 years of their issuance" - reminds UOKiK.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-15 12:34:23 | 2025-08-06 06:29:01 | Details Edit Delete | ||

Hence importers have reduced their orders and, in some cases, opted to import more lambs via airfreight instead of goats", mentioned a spokesman from the Australian Livestock Exporters’ Council.
Live exports have diminished from 88,897 in 2014-15 to just 16,578 in the last financial year, according to the Department of Agriculture and Water Resources’ annual report.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-15 13:00:49 | 2025-08-05 19:00:34 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2204 | Meat industry to witness strong growth in Brazil and North America | The rest of the world is confronted with biosecurity risks and challenging condition, show Rabobank analysis. |
Growth in global animal protein production is expected to slow as we move through 2019, given some obvious areas of uncertainty in trade, biosecurity, and the weather, show the most recent outlook from Rabobank.
Due to harsh weather conditions and high biosecurity risks, meat and poultry production will witness an increase only in some regions of the world, such as South and North America. Also, uncertainty created by African swine fever, in trade, and with feed prices all contribute to the slowdown in production.
Nevertheless, the economic outlook is positive for most of the world, and consumer confidence remains firm, mentioned the analysts. "To help ensure a successful year ahead, the animal protein supply chain needs to look through the uncertainties. Boosting competitiveness in trade will benefit from strong relationships and reasonable pricing, as well as enhanced biosecurity. Boosting competitiveness in domestic markets will benefit from innovative approaches to production and processing that boost value-adding", the document says.

North America will see strong growth in production, with increases across all species, led by pork. Exports will increase too, while small, total growth in beef exports will lead export growth, predicts the analysts.

Europe
Poultry production is growing, but pork and beef are stable. European exports will grow, and biosecurity will become even more important.

China
Biosecurity is the top issue for the Chinese animal protein sector, and pork production is down materially as a result. Imports are expected to rise.

Brazil
Production is growing across all species of the Brazilian animal protein complex. Local economic conditions influence local demand… and could go either way. Exports are expected to increase.

South-East Asia
Poultry leads to modest production growth in South-East Asia. Cost pressures are rising, challenging local production and imports.

Australia & New Zealand
Beef and sheepmeat production in Australia & New Zealand will decline. Limited supplies will maintain strong livestock prices, and seasonal conditions dictate growth possibilities.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-16 06:46:46 | 2025-08-06 00:48:36 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2205 | A huge volume of turkey recalled due to Salmonella risk | More than 41 tonnes of turkey meat has been recalled from the market after Salmonella outbreak. |
41.4 tonnes of raw ground turkey produced by Jennie-O Turkey Store Sales are recalled from the market after Salmonella outbreak that affected 164 consumers from 35 states in the US, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS).
FSIS, and its public health partners, including the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Arizona Department of Health Services, has been conducting traceback activities for a sample of Jennie-O brand ground turkey in an intact, unopened package from a patient’s home. The patient tested positive for Salmonella Reading and the sample from the ground turkey matches the outbreak strain.

FSIS, the CDC, and state public health and agriculture partners have been working together on an illness cluster involving 164 case-patients in 35 states. Patients have reported eating different types and brands of turkey products purchased from many different stores, handling raw turkey pet food and/or raw turkey, or working with live turkeys or living with someone who handled live turkeys. FSIS continues to work with the CDC and state health departments on this investigation and will provide updated information as it becomes available. Based on the continuing investigation, additional product from other companies may also be recalled.

Consumption of food contaminated with Salmonella can cause salmonellosis, one of the most common bacterial foodborne illnesses. The most common symptoms of salmonellosis are diarrhea, abdominal cramps, and fever within 12 to 72 hours after eating the contaminated product. The illness usually lasts 4 to 7 days. Most people recover without treatment. In some persons, however, diarrhea may be so severe that the patient needs to be hospitalized. Older adults, infants, and persons with weakened immune systems are more likely to develop a severe illness. Individuals concerned about an illness should contact their health care provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be frozen and in consumers’ freezers. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products should be thrown away or returned to the place of purchase. The investigation, in this case, will continue.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-16 06:58:54 | 2025-08-06 01:44:37 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2207 | Nevermind the crisis, Argentinian beef exports will rise! | The South American country is likely to gradually boost its presence in the international beef market due to growing production and flat domestic demand. |
Even if the financial crisis is stepping back in Argentina, the country's beef sector is expected to thrive on exports, according to a recent outlook issued by Rabobank.
"In terms of production costs, Argentine farmers have been the most competitive players in the global market. Even with the recent changes in the export taxes policy as a result of the country’s current economic turmoil, Rabobank expects Argentina to continue as a very efficient player.
Given the landscape of growing production and almost flat domestic demand, Argentina is likely to gradually boost its presence in the international beef market", says Adolfo Fontes, Senior Analyst - Animal Protein.
The share of Argentinian beef in international markets is secured by the country's very positive reputation as a high-quality beef producer, which, in time, will increase its exports.
"For the poultry and pork sectors, the scenario is still challenging. However, it is important to mention that, structurally, Argentina has an important advantage as a leading producer of feedstuff, which in turn likely translates into opportunities for the sector in the long term", added the analyst.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-16 14:08:06 | 2025-08-06 10:34:24 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2224 | Australia is looking for clear labeling system | Substitutes of meat and dairy products must avoid false or misleading labeling of plant products, claims the Minister of Federal Regional Services. |
Bridget McKenzie, Minister of Federal Regional Services in Australia, has stepped up her campaign against what she calls false or misleading labeling of plant products as dairy or meat products. Thus, it is developing a legislative initiative that will force plant foods labeled 'milk' or 'meat' to change their name if the federal government changes food standards in Australia and New Zealand.
A similar move has been taken by France with an amendment that prohibits the application of terms such as sausages, milk, cheese, steak, bacon or steak to vegan or vegetarian products. In this way, the vocabulary of meat products will be limited only to products of animal origin.
McKenzie has asked different food forums to support her proposal so that Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) revises terminology and prohibits imitations.
"Products labeled as meat and milk should only come from animals and honey must be a pure product produced by bees. I want consumers to have confidence that when they buy honey, it's honey, when they buy meat, it's meat from an animal and when they buy milk, it's actually produced by a dairy cow", she declared.
Australia has a long, controversial history with products that are not of animal origin and the main dairy organizations have expressed in favor of this initiative.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-21 10:00:59 | 2025-08-05 12:09:35 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2225 | British sheep meat imports declined by 8% in September | Imports from Ireland and Australia both recorded year-on-year declines, while shipments from New Zealand increased. |
UK's sheep meat imports declined fast during September evolving contrary to the trend registered up to that date, informs Agriculture and Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).
During the past few months, UK sheep meat imports have been recording strong year-on-year growth. However, during September this came to a sharp halt, recording an 8% (400 tonnes) decline to 4,300 tonnes, according to HMRC data. Imports from Ireland and Australia both recorded year-on-year declines, 40% (300 tonnes) and 66% (600 tonnes) respectively. In contrast, shipments from New Zealand recorded a rise of 14% (350 tonnes). One of the reasons shipments recorded sharp increases during the previous few months is that prices from Australia and New Zealand were more accessible at that time.
More recently, however, these prices have converged, and so there is no longer a financial incentive to ship lamb to the UK from New Zealand. "In the year to September UK imports total 62,000 tonnes, a decline of 1% (900 tonnes) on-the-year. The declines are recorded across all three of the largest partner countries, New Zealand (-2%), Australia (-8%) and Ireland (-25%). In contrast shipments from the Netherlands have doubled in size, albeit to the modest total of 2,800 tonnes", commented Rebecca Oborne, Analyst- Red Meat at AHDB.

Exports have suffered too as the production began to record year-on-year declines. "In total, during September, UK reported exports of fresh and frozen sheep meat stood at 7,600 tonnes, a 7% (500 tonnes) year-on-year decline. Shipments to France declined 21% (900 tonnes) although some of this decline was offset by increases in shipments to Germany (+200 tonnes) and the Netherlands (+300 tonnes). In the year-to September UK reported exports total 56,800 tonnes, 11% (6,800 tonnes) down year-on-year", added Rebecca Oborne.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-21 12:30:07 | 2025-08-06 02:19:33 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2226 | Vion's deep-frozen beef is the newest high-quality product | The company is introducing a new deep-frozen range to the market under the COOL CUTS label. |
Simmentaler and Holstein Friesian are the cattle breeds that were selected by Vion to launch a new high-quality product under the COOL CUTS label. Vion will rely on the high-quality product in marketing matured beef from the GOLDBEEF premium brand. The range is aimed at restaurateurs, hoteliers, and other bulk consumers, as well as the food retail trade. Individually packed, deep-frozen and in packaging ready for sous-vide preparation are entrecote, T-bone, filet and a wide range of special cuts currently trending and ideally suited to the demands and requirements of this target group.
"Vion is one of the few meat producers able to offer the complete process from one source, from slaughtering, deboning and maturing to packaging. We select the raw material by hand for the perfect steak", explained Bernd Stange, COO Beef at Vion. The cuts then become true COOL CUTS only after a three-week maturing process: The meat portions are then packed and deep-frozen individually.

The product range is made up of different cuts and products. These include classic steaks like entrecote, T-bone and filet, as well as flat iron, tomahawk, côte de bœuf and churrasco ribs. All types are marketed “ready to cook” in individual packaging ready for sous-vide preparation by the customer. The aim is to simplify preparation in a professional kitchen: cook the defrosted or deep-frozen sous-vide immersed in water, then grill briefly on both sides – the perfect cut is then ready with success guaranteed.
The perfect cut is also a must, so Vion is ready to adapt the size of the premium steaks. “Not every customer wants rump steak in the 250-gram version, but perhaps rather in portions of 180 grams. We are able to cater to these demands individually” Bernd Stange added. Year-round availability of the full beef range and minimum shelf life of 18 months from the production date mean that the customer can make use of the product as needed. The deep-frozen range will in the future be expanded to other categories in order to offer a complete range to the customer.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-21 13:17:42 | 2025-08-05 17:20:29 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2228 | The processed meat market to grow at 2.6% volume CAGR through 2028 | With a mounting number of processed meat market players investing in Asia, the Asian processed meat market is likely to witness relatively faster growth in the upcoming years, says recent study. |
The processed meat market will envisage a moderate 2.2% volume y-o-y growth in 2018 over 2017, opines a recent market study published by Fact.MR. The study finds that steadily growing meat industry and increasing growth of the food processing industry is majorly contributing to the growth of the processed food market, reports Globe News Wire website.

The report finds that despite their preference for fresh food products, consumers are looking for convenience as it is becoming challenging for them to prepare elaborative meals at home due to the fast-paced lifestyle the lead.
Growing meat production, increasing demand for affordable animal protein, and preference for convenience are expected to provide an impetus to the growth of the processed meat market. However, demand is likely to witness moderate growth, as growing vegan trend and growing colorectal cancer concerns stall consumption.

Pork&poultry are top-selling products

Pork and poultry are accounting for almost 75% share in processed meat market being the top-selling processed meat products globally. Sufficient poultry supplies at relatively low prices and a significant rise in per-capita pork consumption in emerging nations, especially in China, is fueling demand for processed pork and poultry, which is influencing processed meat manufacturers’ leading strategies.

According to a report published by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), pork and chicken exports are likely to increase by 3% and 4% respectively in 2019, buoyed by bolstering demand in emerging nations. Robust demand for pork and chicken is expected to drive their production across the globe to reach 114.6 million tons and 97.8 million tons by 2019, according to the USDA report.

Contrary to the popular belief that organic food products are healthier than their conventional variants, conventionally processed meat products are witnessing higher demand than that for organic processed meat products. According to Fact.MR study, the key reasons why a majority of consumers are more inclined towards purchasing conventionally processed meat include:
- Organic meat tends to be more expensive than conventional meat
- Nearly similar amount of contaminants found in organic and conventional processed meat drives consumers to choose an economical option
- Conventionally processed meat is readily available in a majority of local grocery or retail store
- Consumers are becoming aware of the fact that organic does not mean cruelty-free
- Growing consumer awareness about the relatively higher carbon footprint of organic processed meat

A majority of consumer are health-as well as label-conscious. As consumers are becoming highly conscious while purchasing food products, including processed meat, the safety and affordability of conventionally processed meat is influencing recent trends in the processed meat market.

Asian market to witness rapid growth

According to a report published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), China is one of the world’s largest meat producer and per capita meat consumption rate has increased in key developing Asian countries. Increasing meat import demand in ASEAN countries, which is attributed to the increased domestic demand for processed meat, is expected to generate numerous lucrative opportunities for processed meat market players across the world.

Tyson Food Inc., a US-based processed meat market player, recently acquired Keystone Foods, an American food service company, and the deal included eight processed meat production facilities and three innovation centers in leading Asian countries, including Australia, China, Malaysia, South Korea, and Thailand. The company has invested over US$ 2.16 billion in this deal to expand its sales and distribution networks in high-growth Asian processed meat markets.

BRF S.A., a Brazilian player in the processed meat market, recently partnered with COFCO meats, a Chinese food company, to tap lucrative business opportunities in Chinese processed meat market, leveraging growing demand for animal protein in China by improving quality and food safety in the country.

Another Chinese player in processed meat market – WH Group Limited – announced that its subsidiary Smithfield Foods, Inc., with Henan Shuanghui Investment and Development Co., Ltd. and JD.com, China’s largest retailer, jointly launched a Tripartite Strategic Partnership Agreement boost online sales of Smithfield’s processed meat products, including pork products, in Chinese processed meat market. With a mounting number of processed meat market players investing in Asia, the Asian processed meat market is likely to witness relatively faster growth in the upcoming years.

The Fact.MR report tracks the processed meat market for the period 2018-2028 to find that it is likely to grow at over 2.6% volume CAGR through 2028.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-21 15:23:58 | 2025-08-06 06:09:54 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2229 | Maine suspends marine shrimp fishing for three more years | The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission voted to close the 2019 Maine shrimp season, and in a first decided to close 2020 and 2021 as well due to a decline of the resources in the water. |
"No marine shrimp fishing until 2022", was the conclusion that follows a vote in The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission, who has taken this position due to scarce resources in the coastal waters.
"Any level of fishing pressure that would increase mortality further would hinder any kind of stock rebuilding. The stock is so low, biomass is so low and recruitment is so down – the 2018 recruitment was $2 billion, and while that sounds like a lot, that’s even below the median", explained Tina Berger, representative of the commission.
Environmental changes are part of what is to blame for the decline in shrimp in Maine, with increasing ocean temperatures a central reason cited for the decline. According to the report, while levels of recruitment are of similar magnitudes to what once sustained the fishery, there has been a change in the dynamic that indicates young shrimp are either not growing or surviving in numbers that they did in the past.
Maine is the southernmost part of the shrimp’s historic range, and as the waters in the region warm the stock is likely to move north, according to Seafood Source magazine. The problem was first reported in 2014 when the same commission has decided to ban marine shrimp fishing. “Given that northern shrimp is at the southern limit of its range one may expect this species to be similarly affected by warming waters in the Gulf of Maine,” the report states. Regardless, the likelihood of the shrimp fishery returning, even after three years, is slim.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-22 07:02:25 | 2025-08-06 06:31:43 | Details Edit Delete | ||

2235 | Lumpfish are now the third-largest farmed fish species in Norway | The strange-looking bluefish is an efficient weapon to combat sea lice in salmon farms. |
Norway seafood industry is using a strange tool in the fight against sea lice infestation of salmon farms that led, in 2016, to total losses of around € 300 million to the global fish&seafood industry and a drop of 10% in production.
Sea lice, which have found to be prevalent in the Atlantic salmon farming industries in Norway, Scotland, Ireland, Canada, and Chile, affect the health, welfare, and quality of farmed fish, and between their possible transferral to wild salmon populations and the deleterious effects of anti-sea lice treatments, can cause harm to the environment, according to Seafood Source magazine.
Now, salmon producers in Norway are using lumpfish as a cohabiting “cleaner fish” and the production figures for lumpfish have ramped up quickly. The number of lumpfish producers in Norway stands at around 40, many of them being start-ups, with commercial production figures reaching rising over 30 million juveniles, up from just a few thousand fish in 2010.
That makes lumpfish the third-largest farmed fish species in Norway with a value of € 2.56 for a vaccinated 50-gram fish.
The boost in cleaner fish production and their expanded use in Norway has resulted in an increased focus on their welfare, and the Norwegian Food Safety Authority has started a dedicated campaign that will improve monitoring over the next year.

The larger Norwegian companies have multiple owners, many of them from the salmon farming industry, who prefer to tie in supply rather than buy on the spot market. Namdal Rensefisk for example, one of the largest lumpfish producers, is owned by salmon farming companies Bjørøya Fiskeoppdrett, Marine Harvest, Midt Norsk Havbruk, Nova Sea, and Emilsen Fisk, and specialist breeding company AquaGen.

AquaGen recently took up the challenge of breeding lumpfish in collaboration with Namdal Rensefisk. According to AquaGen researcher Maren Mommens, the current focus is on improving lumpfish health, durability, and efficiency, since the survival of these fish is essential if they are to effectively control sea lice infection levels on salmon farms.

“We are delighted to have initiated a collaboration with Namdal Rensefisk, which has built a state of the art broodstock unit alongside its lumpfish production facilities. This will play an important part in the new breeding program,” AquaGen CEO Nina Santi declared for the magazine.
After two years of producing lumpfish, Namdal Rensefisk has reached an annual production of 2 million fish.
The trend was adopted even in Wales, where lumpfish producer Ocean Matters has introduced a lumpfish certification label, through which it aims to make consumers more aware of how the industry addresses the biological challenge of sea lice through co-habitation strategies. "We believe that salmon farmers who choose lumpfish over mechanical treatments for salmon delousing should be recognized and celebrated for their commitment to fish welfare and environmental stewardship. This is why we created our certification program to support customers’ efforts to achieve a sustainable future for salmon farming,", mentioned Werner Forster, Ocean Matters Chief Executive. The company is producing over 4 million fish annually in an effort to meet growing demand from the market in the United Kingdom.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-23 06:12:52 | 2025-08-06 01:58:14 | Details Edit Delete | ||
2236 | "It is nearly impossible to get an honest story out of China" |
Stories about African Swine Fever (ASF) virus spreading through China are now delivered on a daily basis and no one can get a clear picture of the situation that affects the world's largest pig producer.
"Last Sunday a Chinese feed company announced that they found African Swine Fever in some feed samples. Their stock fell 6%. Miraculously the next day it was announced that their test was wrong. I bet heads rolled on that one….literally. It is nearly impossible to get an honest story out of China.
Never listen to what China says, but rather watch what they do. To get a real handle on how African Swine Fever is affecting China’s Pork Industry we need to watch their imports. I am surmising that the Chinese Government is not releasing information about all the cases of AFS. I also suspect that many cases are not getting reported at all to the Chinese government", says Allan Bentley, Sales representative of Canadian genetics company Genesus.
In his opinion, China will start to import pork at a fast pace in the near future as the situation is getting more confusing. "It may not come from the US but it will come from somewhere", he added.
That moment may not be that far if it is to consider the comments made by his colleague Lyle Jones, Director of Sales, China. "China’s efforts to stem the spread of African swine fever were dealt yet another blow when the agricultural ministry confirmed the first case in a wild boar found dead in northeastern China’s Jilin province, according to the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs.
To combat the disease, movement of pigs within affected areas (see map) is restricted causing markets disruptions and volatility in pork prices from one province to another. However, the overall average price of pork in China remains relatively stable at 13.92 CNY/KG or $0.91 per pound.
Adding to these concerns, major Chinese animal feed maker, Tangrenshen Group, reported on November 1st., that feed produced in one of their units had been contaminated with African Swine Fever.
This is the first reported case of contamination of feed supplies in China increasing the concerns for pig farmers trying to avoid the disease. It also raises the economic pressure on a Pork Industry already struggling to stem the rapid spread of African Swine Fever, which has now reached most of the country's pig-farming regions", said Lyle Jones. China is the world's largest pig producer with more than 500 million pigs a year.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-11-23 06:33:55 | 2025-08-06 09:59:35 | Details Edit Delete |
