7942 | Brazil: Sao Paulo launched a voluntary bovine traceability program | The Brazilian state of São Paulo will begin a process of electronic individual traceability for cattle, similar to the one Argentine will implement. However, the main difference is that in Brazil the system will be voluntary, while in Argentine, under the government of Javier Milei, it will be mandatory from 2025. |
The announcement was made by the governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas, accompanied by the Secretary of Agriculture and Supply, Guilherme Piai. According to them, the goal is to achieve full traceability of the state's cattle by 2030.

"This system will start on a voluntary basis. International markets are imposing increasingly strict requirements regarding traceability, especially the European Union. Even China is looking into this issue, so we could not wait any longer", said Guilherme Piai, who also stressed that traceability will cover the calf.

The Argentine government has decided to implement a mandatory traceability system starting in 2025. By that year, the State will guarantee the availability of the system, but its mandatory nature has generated criticism among rural entities.

During 2024, several Argentine rural organizations, such as Confederaciones Rurales Argentinas (CRA), demanded that the system be voluntary rather than mandatory. This request had strong support from ranchers, especially from the NEA, NOA and coastal regions.

In São Paulo, the identification and traceability system, called Sirbov SP, plans to cover at least 20% of the state's herd by 2025, with an estimated stock of 11.5 million heads of cattle. The goal is to achieve full coverage within five years.

"The identification and traceability system for cattle and buffalo in São Paulo is essential to monitor the life cycle from the beginning, guarantee food security and, above all, open new markets", said Governor Tarcísio de Freitas.

Secretary Guilherme Piai stressed: "The system will be freely adopted by farmers, who will have the opportunity to improve the management of their herds".
| 1 | Technology | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2024-11-23 00:05:36 | 2025-08-13 20:52:55 | Details Edit Delete | |

4473 | Brazil's Aurora plans expansion to cover export demand | Almost $100 million will be invested this year to expand processing facilities for poultry and pork. |
Brazil is still counting on China to keep meat imports at a high level and one clear sign about this is offered by Aurora, the third-largest Brazilian meatpacker. Aurora plans an investment of $93.5 million to expand its processing facilities in order to deliver more animal protein abroad. According to the president of the cooperative, Neivor Canton, Aurora intends to expand the capacity for processing chicken meat by 20% in two years and is asking for licenses to export more pork and chicken to China, hoping to have three more factories authorized soon. The current processing lines produce about 6,000 tonnes of poultry and pork each day of which 2,000 tonnes are exported.
Aurora's president hopes to further strengthen trade ties with China, as the Asian customer is still fighting the effects of African swine fever, which has helped the business of Brazilian exporters.
Canton said China's reliance on imports of Brazilian food served to adjust domestic meat supplies and helped raise product prices, boosting Aurora's results and helping the meat sector during the pandemic.
To increase exports, Aurora is currently seeking three new export licenses from China, including two for chickens in Santa Catarina and one for a pig factory in Mato Grosso do Sul, said Canton.
| 1 | Industry | 2021-02-11 12:33:56 | 2025-08-13 17:34:12 | Details Edit Delete | ||
801 | Brazil's beef exports reached $6.2 billion in 2017 |
Nonetheless, a giant effort made by Brazilian authorities lifted quickly the bans on several markets that now seem to be addicted to the beef exported by local producers. China and Hong Kong are some of those, but also Iran, Egypt, Saudi Arabia or UAE appear in the top 10 buyers of Brazilian beef, as shown in ABIEC reports of beef exports of this country.

Fresh beef, a successful product

From the total amount of $6.2 billion resulted from beef exports, fresh meat is the most merchantable product with more than $5 billion in exports/1.2 million tonnes, representing an increase of 17% in terms of value and 12% in terms of volume compared to 2016. Offals is the second most valuable product of beef exports from Brazil, worth $583 million while the third place is occupied by processed beef $516 million. Casings and salted beef accounted for $69 million and $29 million, respectively.

Middle East exposure

As mentioned before, Iran was the third destination for Brazilian beef in 2017 with 133,035 tonnes worth almost $560 million. It was closely followed by Egypt (146,920 tonnes/$519 million). Still, Iran is a “fresh” market for Brazilian beef, marking an increase of 51% and 40% in terms of value and volume compared with 2016. Egypt, on the other hand, has seen a decrease
of 2% in terms of value and 11% in volume at the same period.

Nevertheless, Egypt and Saudi Arabia (41.332 tonnes/$166 million of Brazilian beef imports in 2017) remain the biggest traditional markets in the Middle East for Brazilian beef as they play the roles of the biggest economy in the area (Saudi Arabia) and the region’s largest consumer market (Egypt). Both of the countries are net importers of meat and, despite the fact that Saudi Arabia population size is only a third of Egypt’s, in 2016, the kingdom imported 50 percent more meat in 2016 than
the North African nation. At that time, Saudi Arabia imports of meat were represented by $898.5 million of live animals and
$2.1 billion of meat. But poultry was and still is the most common product in Saudi’s meals, followed by sheep meat who is preferred over beef and veal. In 2016, Saudi residents consumed 44.47 kilograms of poultry per capita, 5.286 kilogram per capita of sheep and 3.83 kilograms per capita of beef and veal. From that perspective, 2017 could represent a year of
change in consumer habits since the increase in beef imported from Brazil is 50% in terms of value and 44% in terms of volume. On the other hand, Egypt has been a consumer of Brazilian beef for a long time, and in 2016 imported a total
of $147.4 million of live animals and $1.4 billion in meat. Consumption of meat is equally divided between poultry and beef
with 9.27 kilograms per capita of beef and veal, and 9.26 kilograms per capita of poultry, according to 2016 data from the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). For the North African country, frozen bovine was its largest meat imports in 2016, equivalent to $1 billion. Brazil was Egypt’s top exporter of frozen meat of bovine animals, reaching
$591.6 million in 2016. India was second on $376.9 million, as mentioned by Saalam Gateway. In the last two years, Egypt launched a national plan for raising meat production through the expansion of livestock breeding. In 2017, Egypt has bought 24,000 head of cattle from Uruguay and Brazil with much more expected to arrive in the years to come.

UAE (20.855 tonnes/$91 million of Brazilian beef imports in 2017), the other big importer of Brazilian beef in the Middle East, it also have a long tradition with the beef industry from this country. According to a calculation made by Saalam Gateway, in 2016, UAE has imported 60% of its live animals, meats, fish and other products of animal origin. The origin markets
for these products were: Brazil, India, New Zealand, Australia, United States, Pakistan and France. For years now, Brazil stood as the main supplier of food to UAE, in 2016 covering 18.76% of the live animals and meat in this market. Compared to that year, the beef market in UAE for Brazil looks even better in 2017 as the beef imported by the seven sheikdoms increased at 13% in terms of value and at 10% in terms of volume.

Big demand

At the end of 2017, the beef global market was so eager to chew on a Brazilian beef chunk that even the small producers got a slice in market share. According to Brazilian Beef Exporters Association (ABIEC), Sao Paolo was the largest state exporter of Brazilian beef with a turnover of $155 million which stand for a 16% increase on Y/Y basis. At the same time, the smallest state producer in the country, Rondonia, registered an increase in exports by 62% worth $42 million.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-02-19 05:44:18 | 2025-08-13 02:17:42 | Details Edit Delete | |||

"In March, sales of salted meats, the main products imported by Europeans, recorded losses of around 50% in volumes," Mr. Turra added.

According to the president of ABPA, the sector has great expectations for the resumption of the suspended meat exports from the Brazilian companies, which should repair impacts caused by the sharp contraction in exports to the bloc.
| 1 | Market | 2018-04-04 14:47:25 | 2025-08-12 23:16:50 | Details Edit Delete | ||
1334 | Brazil's meat industry in jeopardy for lack of feed as the fuel crisis deepens | Brazil's truckers refuse to end strike although the government recently offered a series of concessions regarding fuel prices and various Brazilian industries are struggling over lack of deliveries and transport options, Financial Times reported. |
Brazil's meat industry is in shambles after an eight-day nationwide strike over soaring fuel prices. The Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) reports disruptions in the flow of products and feed for poultry and swine farming.

According to a survey conducted by the Association with its members, trucks with feed, inputs for the production of animal feed (such as corn and soy) and other products are prevented from circulating in more than 300 points in 22 states across the country.

The association also stated that since the strike began producers had to cull nearly 70 million birds and if the crisis goes on they may be forced to dispose of a similar number of birds. ABPA says that 1 billion chickens and 20 million pigs are not receiving the necessary amount of feed. Furthermore, because of the strike, volumes close to 120,000 tons of chicken and pork have ceased to be exported.

According to Financial Times, the crisis cost the industry so far about $350 million in losses.
| 1 | Industry | 2018-05-29 13:04:56 | 2025-08-12 12:44:03 | Details Edit Delete |
