6428 | Brazil registers first cases of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza in wild birds | Notification does not affect Brazil's status as a HPAI-free country and international trade must be maintained. |
In view of the detection of the first cases of the Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza virus - H5N1 in three wild birds on the coast of Espírito Santo, the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock (Mapa) informs that:

On Wednesday (10), the Official Veterinary Service (SVO) began the investigation of suspected avian influenza after notification received by the Institute for Research and Rehabilitation of Marine Animals of Cariacica (Ipram), in Espírito Santo

Two seabirds of the Thalasseus acuflavidus species were rescued, one located in the municipality of Marataízes and another in the Jardim Camburi neighborhood, in Vitória, both on the coast of Espírito Santo. This Monday, after the end of the epidemiological investigations, the detection of HPAI was also confirmed in a third migratory bird of the species Sula leucogaster that was already at Ipram

Material for diagnosis, biological samples were collected by the SVO and sent to the Federal Laboratory for Agricultural Defense of São Paulo (LFDA-SP), a reference unit of the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA), which confirmed that it was Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza subtype H5N1. These were the first cases of HPAI registered in Brazil

It should be noted that the notification of infection by the HPAI virus in wild birds does not affect the status of Brazil as a country free of HPAI and the other WHOA member countries must not impose prohibitions on the international trade of Brazilian poultry products

Avian influenza, also known as avian flu, is a highly contagious viral disease that mainly affects wild and domestic birds. Currently, the world is experiencing the greatest pandemic of Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza and most cases are related to the contact of migratory wild birds with subsistence, production or local wild birds

Depending on the evolution of the investigations and the epidemiological scenario, new sanitary measures may be adopted by the Ministry of Agriculture and by state agricultural health agencies to prevent the spread of HPAI and protect the national poultry industry

At the same time, communication actions about the disease and the main prevention measures will be intensified in order to raise awareness and sensitize the population in general and poultry breeders, in particular, with emphasis on the immediate notification of suspected cases of the disease and the reinforcement of biosecurity measures in poultry production, including guidelines for different segments of society, both in rural and urban areas

Human infections by the Avian Influenza virus can be acquired mainly through direct contact with infected birds (dead or alive). In this way, we remind the entire population that, when sighting sick birds, call the local veterinary service or make the notification through e-Sisbravet . Do not touch or pick up sick birds. The disease is not transmitted by eating poultry or eggs.

The Animal Health Department of the Secretariat of Agricultural Defense of the Ministry of Agriculture has already notified the WHOA regarding the detection, as well as will respond to questions from society, as it usually does.

The Minister of Agriculture and Livestock, Carlos Fávaro, declares a state of alert to increase the mobilization of the private sector and the entire official veterinary service to increase national preparation, increasing vigilance over the HPAI pandemic

| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-18 00:10:10 | 2025-08-04 04:31:41 | Details Edit Delete | |

6432 | UK seeks to reach a target of 60 percent food self-sufficiency | Following this week’s Farm to Fork Summit held at Downing Street at which Nick Allen represented the UK meat industry, the government has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at shoring-up the resilience of the farming and food sectors and enabling the UK to reach a target of 60% food self-sufficiency. The announcement encompasses innovation, skills development, new farming schemes, fairer supply chains, boosting exports, water and energy security, and cutting red tape. |
In contrast to some recent messages coming from the Home Office, there appears to be an implicit acknowledgement from No. 10 that there is a persistent issue with access to workers; one which is slowly strangling the industry and reducing Britain’s productive capacity, as well as driving up food price inflation.

In their announcement, the Prime Minister’s office committed to responding to the Independent Review of Labour Shortages in the Food Supply Chain and to the launch of the Institute for Agriculture and Horticulture later this year which it’s hoped will further strengthen support for home-grown skills and careers in the sector.

But, seeking to fill vacancies with British workers alone is not a viable short, or even medium-term, solution for the meat industry. Nick Allen told Politics Home recently: “70 per cent of our workers were non-UK when Brexit happened, and that’s a significant number to replace. We are not talking years, we are talking decades to get where Suella Braverman would like us to be, and that will depend on a lot of factors”.

The announcement also emphasises the importance of fairness in supply chains. Government has already introduced new powers through the Agriculture Act 2020 and is starting work on developing regulations for the pig sector, which BMPA will be monitoring closely to ensure regulators understand all the relevant complexities involved in that supply chain.

One thing to come out of the Summit that was encouraging is the addition of five new Trade Attaches who will be providing an on-the-ground conduit into the most valuable overseas markets. After meeting them Nick Allen remarked: "It’s particularly useful that we now have direct technical input via the Trade Attaches, including a new veterinary representative in China. My hope is that this will lead to a deeper and more regular engagement that will facilitate trade with new and existing trading partners".
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-19 00:15:32 | 2025-08-05 03:09:18 | Details Edit Delete | |
6434 | Australia: Slaughter volumes lift strongly in Q1 | The Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) released the Quarter 1 2023 slaughter and production data, according to Meat & Livestock Australia. |
The figures show significant improvements across most species, particularly cattle and mutton. Lamb slaughter and production improved to a lesser extent.

The female slaughter rate (FSR), which measures the number of female cattle processed as a percentage of the total, is a key indicator and provides an important insight into the strength of the national herd rebuild.

In Q1, the FSR averaged 42.4% – a slight (0.4%) uptick on Q4 2022 results but well below the industry-recognised figure of 47%, which signals whether the herd is rebuilding or in liquidation.

The continuation of the low FSR demonstrates that the nation’s cattle herd continues to rebuild and grow, depending on each state. Compared with Q1 2022, slaughter numbers are higher by 13% or 656,300 head. Both these figures support the February wave of the Sheep Producers Intentions Survey data which indicated large volumes of lambs were held back on-farm to add finish and weight due to the wet spring experienced across most of the country in 2022.

Mutton slaughter was the highlight of the Q1 ABS data release, with slaughter numbers increasing 37.5% or 644,300 head quarter-on-quarter, with 2.36 million sheep processed. Compared to Q1 2022, mutton slaughter was higher by 54% or 830,600 head. This was the highest quarterly mutton slaughter volume since Q4 2019.

The strong uptick seen in mutton slaughter is evidence of the strength of the flock rebuild as producers continue to offload non-performing older ewes.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-22 00:10:29 | 2025-08-05 06:14:21 | Details Edit Delete | |
6435 | AHDB: Q1 sees sheep meat exports boosted and imports falling | Fresh and frozen sheep meat imports in the year-to-date (January – March) have totalled 10,700 tonnes, which is down 33% (5,350 tonnes) from the same period in 2022, informs AHDB. Exports show a different picture, reaching 21,200 tonnes for the year-to-date so far, which is growth of 3,800 tonnes (22%) from the same period last year. |
Imports of fresh and frozen sheep meat have grown throughout the first quarter, with an increase of 2,400 tonnes from January to March. Imports for the month of March totalled 4,750 tonnes, an increase of 1,150 tonnes from February, but a drop of 2,200 tonnes from March 2022. This has contributed to imports in Q1 2023 sitting 6,300 tonnes behind the 5-year average for this time period.

Frozen lamb legs made up 35% of total imports during Q1, at 3,700 tonnes. Fresh lamb legs made up 13% of the total during Q1, at 1,400 tonnes, down from a peak of 34% in 2018. Fresh lamb legs saw an uplift in imports from February to March, up 600 tonnes. Export volumes in March are also up 2,100 tonnes year on year. One aspect of this could be the falling domestic consumption of lamb.

Carcase volumes provided much of the uplift on the month and year, totalling 17,300 tonnes for Q1. 6438 | New opportunities developing for US beef in China | China’s economy is off to a good start in 2023 as consumer spending rallies from extended pandemic restrictions, according to USMEF. |
Foodservice is rebounding and importers are working aggressively with its restaurant customers to meet changing demand from consumers. The pursuit of fresh ideas is creating new opportunities for high-quality, grain-fed U.S. beef in a sector that is accustomed to lean, grass-fed beef from South America.

USMEF partnered with a key importer to conduct training on specific U.S. beef cuts for one of its customers, a hot pot chain with more than 150 outlets in top tier cities. The CEO of the restaurant chain joined members of its research and development and quality control teams and Shanghai Podun staff for the seminar, led by USMEF China Director Polly Zhao. She provided an overview of U.S. beef production with an emphasis on how structured grain-feeding programs in the United States contribute to the marbling that fosters cut versatility and creates superior flavor in U.S. beef.

"Shanghai Podun imports large volumes of U.S. beef every month and sees expanding opportunities to grow sales with many of its foodservice customers, including this chain", says Zhao.

A guest chef delivered a cutting presentation to demonstrate the versatility and profitability of using several U.S. beef cuts, including chuck roll, boneless chuck short ribs, short plate, ribeye and top blade. He also explained proper food handling and defrosting techniques before preparing samples of several menu ideas with a variety of U.S. beef cuts. Zhao then described how USMEF works with importers and end-user clients on promotional activities that create demand for U.S. beef and repeat business for the restaurant.

"We are working closely with key players in the supply chain to increase awareness and knowledge about U.S. beef. The partnerships we develop with importers gives us a voice with their end-users, which enables us to help shape purchasing plans", says Zhao.

This activity was funded by the Beef Checkoff Program.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-22 00:30:24 | 2025-08-05 07:49:39 | Details Edit Delete | |
6439 | British egg industry critical of imports | Mark Williams, British Egg Industry Council Chief Executive, has commented on the presence of imported eggs on supermarket shelves, and provided a supply update. |
"Unlike British Lion eggs, the imported eggs on some supermarket shelves are not deemed safe enough to be approved by the Food Standards Agency to be eaten runny by vulnerable groups. Consumers deserve better than this, as do the British farmers who have invested millions in ensuring that British Lion eggs are the safest in the world.

"The British Egg Industry Council warned more than a year ago that unless retailers were prepared to help producers with the unprecedented costs of production they were facing, then production would be curtailed. This is exactly what has happened and now consumers are facing the consequences.

"We are extremely proud of the high standards of the independently audited British Lion Code of Practice and we urge retailers who have chosen to stock imported eggs, to make it absolutely clear that the imported eggs need to be thoroughly cooked and cannot safely be eaten runny by young children, the elderly or during pregnancy.

"Supply is slowly improving as the industry works through the multiple challenges that have dented confidence in producers’ ability to put British eggs on the shelf without losing money, and there should be no compromise in the high standards that British shoppers rightly take for granted".
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-23 00:05:10 | 2025-08-04 19:41:46 | Details Edit Delete | |
6440 | AHDB: Lamb roasts competition at Easter | Traditional roast lamb was once again the flavour of Easter this year, with shoppers switching to the category from all other proteins. |
According to Kantar research analysed by AHDB, lamb roasting joints saw a 25.5 per cent increase in volume sales compared to 2022 (Kantar, two w/e 9 April 2023). Of this, leg roasting joints accounted for almost 93 per cent of all lamb roasting joints sold this Easter, and 62 per cent of all lamb sold for the period.

In total, 9.7 million kg of roasting joints were sold through retailers in the two weeks leading up to Easter. This is up 6.0 per cent on last year, and outperforms the overall meat, fish, and poultry category which saw a 1.8 per cent decline on 2022 (Kantar World Panel).

The importance of the Easter roast was well supported by retailers with many this year pushing promotions. Marketing both online and instore for many retailers featured imagery of Easter lunch with roasting joints front and centre.

This, coupled with slightly unsettled weather this year versus previous, meant more consumers opted for the classic roast for their Easter lunch.

Lamb is traditionally associated as a favourite with older consumers, and whilst they still accounted for over 75 per cent of total lamb sales at Easter, the largest uplift in purchases were seen in the middle family demographic with a 22.3 per cent increase compared to last year.

Charlotte Forkes-Rees, AHDB Retail and Consumer Insight Analyst, said: "Previous research has shown the importance of pester power and the 'treat' aspect associated with lamb particularly for younger demographics, and highlights that consumers were really getting behind the celebratory sentiment surrounding Easter.

"There may have also been heightened demand for lamb with Eid falling just after the Easter period. AHDB research has indicated that supermarkets are becoming more popular for Muslim consumers, particularly with younger generations as they are looking for cheaper alternatives to butchers during the cost-of-living crisis".
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-23 00:10:33 | 2025-08-05 13:53:56 | Details Edit Delete | |

6444 | AHDB: Monthly beef trade increases | According to the latest HMRC trade data, UK fresh and frozen beef imports came to 19,170 tonnes in March. Compared to February this was a month-on-month (MOM) increase of 19.0% (3,060 tonnes). Whilst all product categories saw MOM increases, increased imports of fresh and frozen boneless beef drove the overall trend, increasing by 1,820 tonnes (20.6%) and 1,080 tonnes (21.8%) respectively MOM. |
Year-on-year (YOY), imports were down by 2,780 tonnes as both fresh and frozen imports eased on the year by 970 tonnes (-6.9%) and 1,820 tonnes (-22.7%) respectively. This was due to drops to imports from Ireland and the Netherlands, and most notably from Germany where shipped volumes fell by 69.2% (-1,240 tonnes) YOY.

Whilst imports of fresh beef continue to dominate total beef imports making up around two thirds of beef import volumes, frozen imports saw a much larger YOY drop overall. This was driven by declines to frozen boneless beef volumes, specifically from Ireland (-550 tonnes, -12.3%) and Germany (-880 tonnes, -63.4%).

This all contributed to year-to-date (YTD, Jan-Mar) imports easing by slightly over 5,000 tonnes YOY, at just 52,920 tonnes. With YTD imports down 8.7% YOY and down 9.5% compared to the 5-year average, this is higher than the expected trend of a 2% reduction in import volumes this year as demand eases.

The UK exported 8,950 tonnes of fresh and frozen beef in March, up 190 tonnes MOM. This resulted from increasing exports to the EU, with greater volumes going to France (250 tonnes, 12.3%) and Belgium (100 tonnes, 55.6%). However, this was partially offset by exports to the Netherlands and Germany falling by 140 tonnes each.

Yet YOY export volumes saw the opposite trend as fresh exports saw a 25.9% (-2180 tonnes) drop off on the year, at just 6,240 tonnes in March, whilst frozen volumes decreased by 1,820 tonnes (-40.2%) YOY at 2,710 tonnes for the month. With total beef exports for the month down YOY, for the second month running, this brings YTD exports to just 26,190 tonnes, down compared to the same period in 2022 and the 5-year average, by 17.3% and 10.2% respectively.

For March specifically, with the EU remaining the key destination for the UK’s fresh beef exports, sizeable reductions in exports to Ireland, France, the Netherlands and Spain led to the reduction in fresh exports. When looking at fresh products specifically, significant declines across all categories, namely boneless beef (-660 tonnes), beef carcases (-1,180 tonnes) and bone-in beef (-340 tonnes), indicates demand for fresh beef on the continent is down, even when compared to the 5-year average. However, when looking at frozen beef exports, declining exports of boneless beef accounted for nearly all of the YOY decline.

Unlike for fresh beef, declining exports of frozen beef to the EU, specifically the Netherlands and Spain, only accounted for just under a third of the total export declines YOY, falling by just 630 tonnes in March. Declining exports to Asia drove the overall trend as Japan, China and the Philippines saw YOY declines of 260 tonnes, 440 tonnes and 150 tonnes respectively. This continues the trend of lower YOY exports to these nations, seen in the first two months of the year. Since global exports to these destinations have been up YOY recently, this may be due to increasing imports from other global producers. Meanwhile exports to Canada also fell by 230 tonnes YOY as it recorded no beef imports for the second month running.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-24 00:10:47 | 2025-08-05 16:14:53 | Details Edit Delete | |

6448 | South Korea reopened to German pork | Deliveries of German pork to the Republic of Korea (South Korea) are now possible again after a two-and-a-half-year ban as a result of the first detections of African swine fever (ASF) in Germany. |
The first three German slaughterhouses and processing plants were re-approved by the Korean authorities for export to South Korea. The Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL) had made intensive efforts to conclude a regionalization agreement in order to be able to resume trade from the unaffected regions of Germany.

Federal Minister Cem Özdemir explains : "Our efforts to lift the ban on deliveries of German pork to Korea are having an effect! I am very pleased that we have managed to make it clear that we have put in place effective protective measures against African swine fever in Germany. We are working on lifting bans on German pork from other third countries, especially with regard to China, and we will take every opportunity to do so. African swine fever and the following restrictions have dealt our pig farmers a severe blow - and in one Time in which many companies have been faced with further existential challenges and the associated structural breaks for years."

A key sales market in Asia has thus been reopened for German pork. In 2019, the Republic of Korea imported around 106,000 tons of pork from Germany, including around 41,000 tons of pork belly. With almost 298 million euros, Korea was the second largest buyer of pork from Germany among the third countries that year.

Due to the difficult negotiating position due to persistent outbreaks, from July 2021 also in domestic pigs, and the negative attitude of the Korean pork producers, the negotiations for a regionalization agreement have been very complex and lengthy. With the support of the EU Commission, which has also campaigned for the recognition of the entire EU's regionalization measures towards Korea, a milestone was reached last September with the formal recognition of regionalization by Korea.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-25 00:15:22 | 2025-08-06 05:32:54 | Details Edit Delete | |
6459 | African swine fever decreases in pigs and wild boar in the EU during 2022 | The number of outbreaks of African swine fever (ASF) in pigs and cases reported in wild boar in the European Union (EU) fell considerably in 2022 compared to the previous year, according to a new report published by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA). The disease was notified in eight EU countries in pigs and eleven EU countries in wild boar. |
"Over the last decade, African swine fever has had a dramatic impact on the pig farming sector in the EU and continues to disrupt local and regional economies. While our latest report shows encouraging signs that efforts to halt the spread of the virus may be taking effect, the picture across the EU is by no means universally positive and we must remain vigilant. Farmers, hunters and vets have a particularly important role to play in reporting suspicious cases" said Bernhard Url, EFSA’s Executive Director.

In 2022, ASF outbreaks among domestic pigs in the EU decreased by 79% compared to 2021. The decrease was particularly marked in Romania, Poland and Bulgaria. Lithuania, on the contrary, registered a slight increase caused by a cluster of outbreaks notified in summer in the south-western part of the country.

Eight EU countries (Bulgaria, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania and Slovakia) and four non-EU neighbouring countries (Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine) reported outbreaks in domestic pigs. Romania was the most affected EU country with 327 outbreaks, representing 87% of the total EU outbreaks. Serbia was the most affected non-EU country of those included in the report, with 107 outbreaks. ASF was notified for the first time in North Macedonia.

Regarding wild boar, 40% fewer cases were reported in the EU during 2022 compared to 2021. This is the first decrease of ASF cases in wild boar in the area since its introduction in 2014. Eleven EU Member States (Czechia, Estonia and Hungary in addition to the Member States with outbreaks among domestic pigs) and four non-EU countries (Moldova, North Macedonia, Serbia and Ukraine) notified ASF cases in wild boar.

EFSA’s StopASF campaign extended

To support the continuing efforts to control the spread of the virus, EFSA is extending its StopASF campaign in 2023. The campaign raises awareness among farmers, hunters, and veterinarians in the EU and surrounding countries about how to detect, prevent, and report ASF.

Now in its fourth year, EFSA's StopASF campaign encourages commercial and backyard farmers, veterinarians, and hunters to ‘detect, prevent, report’ ASF cases. The campaign relies on the assistance of local farmers’ groups. It is run in partnership with local authorities in eighteen countries: Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Czechia, Estonia, Greece, Hungary, Kosovo, Latvia, Lithuania, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-30 00:05:59 | 2025-08-05 06:44:41 | Details Edit Delete | |
6450 | ABPA speaks about the new records of AI in wild birds in Brazil | Regarding the new records of Avian Influenza in Wild Birds in Brazil, the Brazilian Association of Animal Protein (ABPA) applauds the important work of monitoring the disease carried out by the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock and by the State Departments of Agriculture. |
The ABPA points out that the outbreaks identified are wild birds. Brazil remains recognized as free of the disease before the World Organization for Animal Health (WHOA), since commercial production continues without any registration.

The ABPA also points out that the registration of new cases should not generate impacts on Brazilian exports. In this context, it is worth highlighting the important work carried out by the Ministries of Agriculture and Livestock and Foreign Affairs to present clarifications to the various import destinations of animal protein from Brazil.

There is also no risk to the supply of products, at the same time that the ABPA recalls that, according to all international health bodies, there is no risk in the consumption of products.

Finally, ABPA reinforces the call made to all poultry producers in Brazil to maintain the biosecurity of the flocks, complying with the guidelines established by the Government and the agroindustries.
| 1 | Market | adrian.lazar@industriacarnii.ro | 2023-05-26 00:05:02 | 2025-08-04 04:31:41 | Details Edit Delete |
